10 best build your own microphones
Building your own microphone can be a fascinating DIY project, especially if you're into sound engineering or music production. While it might not be as simple as assembling a piece of furniture, the process is doable with some technical know-how. Here are some general steps you might consider:
Research and Design:
- Start by researching different microphone types, especially dynamic microphones since they are commonly used for vocals. Understand the basics of how microphones work.
- Design your microphone, considering factors like the diaphragm, magnet, coil, and housing.
Gather Materials:
- Acquire the necessary components, such as a diaphragm material (commonly mylar), a magnet, a coil of wire, and a housing to encase the elements.
Build the Diaphragm:
- Cut the diaphragm material to the desired size and shape. It should be thin, lightweight, and able to vibrate easily in response to sound waves.
Create the Coil:
- Wind a coil of wire. The coil is usually attached to the diaphragm, and its movement within the magnetic field generates an electrical current.
Construct the Magnet Assembly:
- Place a strong magnet near the coil to create the magnetic field. This interaction is crucial for the microphone's function.
Assemble the Microphone:
- Carefully assemble the diaphragm, coil, and magnet within the housing. Ensure everything is securely in place.
Connectors and Accessories:
- Add connectors and other accessories. This includes the XLR connector commonly used in professional audio equipment.
Testing:
- Before finalizing your build, test the microphone to ensure it's functioning correctly. You may need additional tools like an oscilloscope or a multimeter to measure its performance.
Fine-Tuning:
- Adjustments may be needed to optimize the microphone's sensitivity, frequency response, and overall performance.
Remember, building a microphone requires a good understanding of electronics and acoustics. It's also crucial to adhere to safety precautions, especially when dealing with electrical components. Experimentation and fine-tuning will likely be part of the process, so be patient and enjoy the learning experience!

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it come with the 12VDC adapter |
Answer: | The Radar should be your last pedal on your pedalboard and from here directly to the PA, I assume a DI will help if the distance to the mixer is long and you also eliminate unwanted signal loss and noise. |
Question: | Not sure if this has been asked but is the line out balanced or unbalanced |
Answer: | You can use both, but they do not have independent volume levels. |
Question: | I want to run from pedalboard straight to a pa. does this require a di box behind it or a pre-amp pedal in front of it |
Answer: | Hi Patrick - while you have your choice of transmitter types (handheld or bodypack), only one can be used at a time with the receiver. If two transmitters operate on the same frequency, they will interfere with each other; you can always have multiple receivers receiving the same signal, though. We use the analogy of a car stereo receiving a radio signal - unlimited cars (the receiver) can get the radio station (transmitter), but when you get to a point where two radio stations are on the same frequency, you have horrible reception. |
Question: | Can i use headphones and output simultaneosly? Does they have independent volume levels |
Answer: | Yes, with the mounting kit you can attach two on a metal plate for side by side configuration. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Suggestions/ideas on how to clip the long power module itself to one's belt? other than placing it in a pocket? i can't find a belt clip for it |
Answer: | The transmitter and lavalier microphone are connected together. The transmitter has a range of about 300 feet to the receiver. |
Question: | Since this has an XLR connection can you use two of them at once when connected to a Zoom H4n? as in two of these mics connected to 1 Zoom H4N |
Answer: | There are several versions of this mic. The AT899 comes with a power module. This is right from the manufacturer's website: "ACCESSORIES FURNISHED - AT8537 power module; AT8439 cable clip; clothing clip base; viper clip base; magnet clip base and plate with lanyard; three single mic holders; two double mic holders; two element covers; two windscreens; battery; protective carrying case" If you would like to buy this item, please consider buying from us. We are an authorized Audio Technica USA dealer. If you find a lower price, we will beat it! Give us a call 800-213-3021, The Sound Professionals |
Question: | What is the maximum distance the transmitter can receive from the lavalier |
Answer: | The only way I use it on my t3i is in the top position and auto audio in the camera otherwise the audio will be way too hot. I find this setting gives me the best pick up from even quite a few feet away. |
Question: | Does it come with the power module too? Would someone please confirm? The other question has controversy answers |
Answer: | Not unless the rode boom poles use a cold shoe mount. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you connect multiple mv7 mics to the same computer via usb |
Answer: | It’s maye a ruler and a half. If you purchase it make sure you apply the resin to the bow otherwise you will assume it doesn’t work 😂 my 4 year old loves it |
Question: | Has anyone used this mic with the rode psa1 microphone boom - mainly, is the mic heavy enough |
Answer: | It's very delicate, but it's a real violin. You could start with the Suzuki method and see if the 5 year old likes to play it. If so, you can decide to rent or buy a violin that fits the size of the child as she grows. The price is good as a starter instrument, and the pink color is adorable. |
Question: | Being that this is a condenser mic, how much background noise does it pick up |
Answer: | This is a small child size violin (3-5 years old). It can only be used with formal violin instruction by a violin teacher. The child can play the strings with the bow but it is not easy to play any tune without violin lessons. |
Question: | why is this using micro usb? does this company know about USB type C |
Answer: | This is a real violin perfect size for a 4-5 year old. My granddaughter like many girls, likes pink. She might take Suzuki lessons on it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | anyone use this for recording singing vocals? thanks |
Answer: | Not this one specifically, but I have regularly used large diaphragm DYNAMIC mics much like this one (actually a Shure SM7b) and they work fine on vocals. Its a fairly flat frequency response with a slight bump in the upper midrange, and the proximity effect helps beef up thin sounding vocals. So yes, a quote-unquote "broadcast mic" can work just as well for singing as for spoken word. Don't let anyone tell you different. |
Question: | Does this work with behringer xenyx x1204usb? or additional equipments are required |
Answer: | It works. You just need a XLR mic cable and you are good to go (it is not included). |
Question: | Is it with a USB attachement |
Answer: | Here's short run down I just noticed today. I'm in the market for a Rode Mic so I did some digging. Rode NT-USB USB ($169)Rode PodCaster USB Dynamic Microphone (USB $230)Rode ProCaster Broadcast Dynamic Vocal Microphone XLR ($230)Rode BroadCaster Studio Condenser Microphone XLR ($400)Fist two are USB. Last two are XLR. |
Question: | Can this be placed on the center of a small table and used by two or three speakers (for a podcast |
Answer: | As some of the others have mentioned, this mic is not what you are looking for but the Blue Yeti is perfect for your needs. The internet is filled with mixed reviews about the Blue Yeti but as someone who has nearly 30 years of experience as an audio engineer, I can tell you that it's a fabulous mic, especially for your particular application. I currently record multi-person podcasts daily using the Yeti in omni mode while hanging overhead for multiple speakers/conversational situations, a Rode Podcaster as the daily driver for one of the on-air personalities and a Shure SM7B for another on-air personality and I'm extremely happy with the performance of all three mics. I also use an Audio Technica AT2020 sometimes when we have an additional guest in the studio. One thing to keep in mind - you will need to understand your workstation and have a plan on how to set up your gear, as the Yeti is a USB mic (unless you get the pro model which takes both XLR and USB) while the AT2020 is an XLR and so on... you get the idea. With these two different formats I often see people purchasing both kinds without first figuring out how they are going to get all these mics to play nicely with one another. Do your homework on how you're going to hook everything up and you should be just fine. Good luck! |
Product features
Rode Procaster
The RØDE Procaster is a broadcast-quality dynamic microphone, specifically designed to offer no-compromise performance for voice applications in the broadcast environment. It features a tight polar pattern and tailored-for-voice frequency response. It also features an internal pop filter to minimize plosive sounds that can overload the microphone capsule and distort the audio. Its high output dynamic capsule and balanced low impedance output make it an ideal broadcast and voice over microphone.
