Answer:	If your TV has an optical output, it is extremely likely that it is TOSLINK. TOSLINK is the name of a physical connection standard. You'll see other acronyms that refer to the protocol carried over that connection. SPDIF refers to one layer of the digital protocol that can be carried over a TOSLINK connector. You'll also see a reference to PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) which refers to one of the formats of audio that can be transferred using SPDIF. This device requires that your TV be able to output PCM over the TOSLINK optical link. Many TV's let you set PCM output but some do not. Make sure that yours does before you purchase this device. My Samsung tv permits this and this device has worked perfectly for many months.

Will these fit 8inch speakers, as most reviews said they run big

Answer:

The answer is likely "yes." 1-2 years ago I bought a $50 DAK brand unit at Amazon with the same connection capabilities as this one, after puzzling over how I was going to use my 3.5mm analog earphones to listen to sound from my HDTV. What I did, and likely what you should so, is buy a Toslink cable here to make the connection from the Toslink output on your TV to this unit. Toslink is a name for optical fiber cables and the reason you're having a problem is that the only audio output from most (if not all) HDTV's is via Toslink, so you can't get the sound to units which have 3.5mm (analog earphones) and RCA inputs (stereos, etc.).On the back of your HDTV is a tiny square plastic knob which covers the Toslink audio output - reason: because like any other glass it will dull if left exposed to the air. Remove the "knob" and insert one end of the Toslink cable into the HDTV Toslink output and the other end into the Toslink input on the back of this unit (they have to be positioned correctly but by looking at the end of the cable and its lines along the insert you can see how to position it. You now have TV audio to this unit. (Some people have commented that they couldn't make a secure connection between the Toslink cable and the Toslink output/input - reason is that they didn't remove the Toslink cover first, which will likely also have to be removed from the back of the unit - just pull it out.)You now have two outputs on the unit which will deliver sound - a 3.5mm and the two RCA's red and white for plus and minus. You use these with the proper cables to connect to your earphones and stereo unit. If you want to connect either output to more than 1 unit you can buy here the proper pigtail connector to let you do that - I use the RCA outlet to run into my amplifier/radio which has a 3.5mm stereo input so I bought a small solid "pigtail" here which plugs into the 3.5mm input and then accepts the RCA cables on the other end - result is that I can play the TV sound through the amplifier/receiver. You can vary this as needed by looking at the inputs on your stero/receiver - it's all available here.If you're gong to use the 3.5mm ouput with headphones you'll likely need a 3.5mm headphone extension wire, also available here. I had one problem with initial headphone extension wire my unit which made the headphones rather useless for some TV movies with low volume - couldn't hear those movies even with the volume on the unit (not the HDTV which doesn't affect my headphones) turned all the way up (my unit has a volume control - this one doesn't seem to) . Judging from the few comments I see here that's not a problem with this unit, but if it is here's the solution. For technical reasons having to do with where signal travels (along the outside of the wire, not through it) and the old geometrical formula that the circumference of a cylinder (which is what a wire is - a long cylinder) is Pi X the wire's diameter, obviously the thicker the wire the more signal you're going to get, so the solution was to buy an ultra-thick 3.5 mm extension cable for the earphones - cost about $13 for 15-20 feet (the one some folks were complaining was too thick)- no need to buy those $50 "monster cables."Lastly, my unit has both a volume control and a selector switch (between 3.5mm and RCA output) and I can't see if the back of yours has a selector switch or not - if it does, use it if not, likely it doesn't need it. Looks like there's no volume control yet the few comments I saw say that the volume works fine. Likely just improvements in the art in the 1-2 years since I bought mine. As to the lack of a volume switch, on mine I always keep it at maximum volume and this works fine 99% of the time, so likely the absence of one will not be a problem. Likely there are still units with one for more money if you want one.

Answer:	First by no means an expert. My research kept coming back to and I quote, "An best audio converter for your cable/satellite/DVD/Blu-ray boxes with Dolby Digital 5.1CH (AC-3) audio outputs. It was the Dolby Digital 5.1 CH (AC-3) my LG TV output signal I wanted to be sure I could convert. I had looked at other converters and this was mentioned that theirs did NOT work with 5.1 CH. One other concern was DA34 is 2.0 channel output. The DA21 mentions stereo which in my old world would be the same. However, I did not want to take a chance thus the DA34. As my feedback says, it works great. Hope this helps.

Answer:	Yes you do need external power! It comes with it's own 120v adapter that plugs into your wall outlet and into the Orei Da34 converter. The power amplifies the Digital signal and gives the output Analog signal better quality. The sound is GREAT!
