10 best violas
A viola is a musical instrument that belongs to the string family, specifically the orchestral strings. It is larger than a violin but smaller than a cello and is known for its rich and mellow tone. Here are some key points about violas:
Size and Appearance: Violas are typically around 16 to 18 inches (40 to 46 centimeters) in length, making them larger than violins. They have four strings, which are usually tuned to the pitches C, G, D, and A from low to high. The body of the viola is usually made of wood, with a curved shape and f-shaped soundholes.
Sound and Tone: The viola has a warm and mellow tone that is distinct from the brighter sound of the violin and the deeper, resonant sound of the cello. Its unique tonal qualities make it an essential part of the orchestra, contributing to the overall harmony and depth of sound.
Orchestral Role: Violas are integral members of orchestras and chamber music ensembles. They often play the inner voices, providing harmony and counterpoint to the melodies produced by violins and cellos. Violas also have solo repertoire, although it is less extensive compared to the violin or cello.
Bow and Bowing Technique: Viola players use a bow to produce sound by drawing it across the strings. Bowing techniques are crucial for achieving different dynamics, articulations, and timbres. Viola bows are slightly heavier and longer than violin bows to accommodate the instrument's larger size and strings.
Repertoire: Violas have a diverse repertoire that includes classical, baroque, romantic, and contemporary music. Composers like Johannes Brahms, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Béla Bartók have written notable pieces for the viola.
Sizes and Variations: While the standard viola size is the most common, smaller and larger violas are available to accommodate players of different hand sizes and preferences. Some players may use a chin rest or shoulder rest for added comfort during extended playing.
String Materials: Viola strings are typically made of materials like gut, synthetic core, or steel. Each material offers a different tonal quality and playing experience. Players often choose strings that complement their desired sound and playing style.
Maintenance: Proper care and maintenance are essential for keeping a viola in optimal playing condition. This includes regular tuning, string replacement, and humidity control to prevent damage to the instrument.
Education and Training: Learning to play the viola requires dedication and practice. Many musicians begin their training at a young age and continue their studies through music schools, conservatories, or private lessons.
Ensemble and Solo Performances: Viola players can pursue careers as orchestral musicians, chamber musicians, or soloists. Their versatility allows them to perform in various musical settings, from small ensembles to symphony orchestras.
The viola is a vital instrument in the world of classical music and chamber music, adding depth and richness to musical compositions. Its unique sound and role make it an essential component of orchestral and ensemble performances.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it come with a bridge and strings? I noticed other sellers specifically say they do but not this seller |
Answer: | Absolutely, but you have to set the bridge yourself. You can Google a how to video for setting a bridge on a Viola. |
Question: | Does it come built |
Answer: | You will have to put the bridge in place and tune it up. |
Question: | Does it come already built |
Answer: | If what you mean is does it come with the bridge already set, then no. It comes with strings loose and the bridge is wrapped separately. |
Question: | Where's the name brand and serial number |
Answer: | Lykos 2.7 out of 5 stars 9 Reviews Back to School Basswood Acoustic Viola + Case + Bow + Rosin Xmas (16", Natural) |
Question: | can you plug it into a amp because the images do not show a jack |
Answer: | Yes. There are 3 sockets on the back of violin. One is "Line out" (for amp). One is "Mic" and one is "Phones". The Included cord for the amp is a little over 9 feet and is decent quality. There is no static backround noise and my violin comes in clear. *In the stock photo the amp cable is to the right of the headphones. |
Question: | How can I plug it to my laptop? There is a chord but it doesn't fit the computer outlet |
Answer: | It has a quarter inch plug, look for either an A to D connector, or (more easily a rocksmith cable) a USB interface. Electric instruments are almost all the same you'll never have the same sound as an acoustic. But it will give you a unique and interesting sound. Especially at this price point. |
Question: | how quiet is it? I would be practicing during my toddlers nap time and need it to be very very quiet/silent with out an amp or head phones |
Answer: | I get about 81 dB playing open strings. It’s not so quiet. |
Question: | Does the kit come with strings attached or must you string them yourself |
Answer: | The strings come attached. In fact, as soon as my violin came in, I took it to my local music store (who strung my acoustic violin) to have him check it out to see if the violin and strings are of good quality. He thought is was decent quality. I couldn't be happier with it, especially for the price. When you first get it, you will have to re-tune the strings every 10 minutes or so while you are playing, but after about a week of re-tuning (and it does need tuning less frequently with time) you are good to go. It doesn't hold a tune as well as my acoustic...I tune it before I begin playing usually, but it does hold well and the sound is fantastic. You can play it through an amp or into headphones and I think the sound quality is awesome. Hope this helps. :) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the used product have the same return policy as the new |
Answer: | The company is based in California, BUT they have their instruments manufactured in China. I am considering buying a viola from them, but I will not buy a horn from them again. They won't sell you replacement parts and the valves went bad just after the 1-year warranty expired. :-/ It's a risk, but the instruments are so inexpensive, might be worth it. |
Question: | How do I select a 15.5" viola? I don't see a button for different sizes |
Answer: | I am not sure. My son is 5"2 if that helps any. It is one size too big for him. I got it big so he will grow into it |
Question: | When shilped (is the bridge set - in place ) where it belongs |
Answer: | It comes with back straps to be used as a backpack. After a months use, the straps broke. Not very sturdy. The instrument itself is a good starter instrument. |

Mendini Viola
The Mendini viola has an impressive quality for the price, and is a remarkably affordable option for students who have never played the viola before and want to try it out for the first time. Here at Cecilio Musical Instruments, we understand that students have unique and diverse preferences. To better serve this diversity, our Mendini MA series of violas offers a wide variety of colors to choose from at exceptionally affordable prices. Both of our Mendini MA250 and Mendini MA350 violas have the same specifications and quality, but they differ in the type of finish used and the character of sound each one produces. The MA350 has a mellow and warm tone with a soft satin varnish finish to match, and the MA250 has a bright and vibrant tone and finish. Mendini viola includes a lightweight form fitting hard, a Brazilwood bow with unbleached genuine Mongolian horsehair, rosin, and a bridge making this package a great deal for beginners.
How to choose viola sizes
Our violas are available in 7 different sizes: 16.5", 16" (also known as full size), 15.5", 15", 14", 13" and 12". 16.5" viola is the biggest and 12" viola is the smallest. Most adults use 16" violas.
To measure what size viola best suits you, you need to know the length between your neck and the middle of your left-hand palm (when your hand is fully extended and raised perpendicular to your body, just like holding a violin). Most of the teachers prefer students to use the length from the neck to the wrist for measurement instead of the neck to mid-palm approach. The viola size determined by the neck/wrist approach would be the size that is more comfortable for students to hold. The viola size determined by the neck/mid-palm approach would be the biggest size students should use.
The following table lists the length of each viola size. Find your length using your preferred approach and use that to determine the size of viola to get.

A fun and engaging system to help you learn your notes!
The Fantastic Finger Guide gives you the best musical information at your fingertips to help you become a more confident player by showing you exactly where each note is on your fingerboard. Great for both beginning students or intermediate viola players, our guides feature a patented 2 color - 3 shape design that is simple, smart, and easy to understand. The triangles = open strings, squares = natural notes, and blue ovals = sharp/flat notes. The decals show all chromatic notes on the fingerboard through the 4th position mark. A sharp/flat indicator located on the side of the neck shows which direction to go for sharp and flat notes. On the other side of the neck are the position numbers, so the player can start early on shifting into higher positions.
We have tested our finger guides on many instruments, and while note locations are typically accurate on most, there may be situations where the notes don't align due to variance in instrument size and setup.
Easy-to-use stickers that won’t leave a mess behind
Each UV coated note decal has self-adhesive on the back end so that the notes won’t slip around while you are playing your instrument - and once you learn your notes, the markers come off without leaving a sticky mess. Once you are confident in knowing your notes, remove the decal and your visual memory will intuitively know where each note is. Our guides are easy to install but are not reusable. You must adjust the guide prior to wrapping around the neck of the instrument, as the vinyl and the paint may crack if you make adjustments after.
Note the difference
Weston’s Fantastic Finger Guides were created over several years by a string teacher who wanted a practical yet fun way for his own music students to learn their notes. All of our products are made in the USA.
Patent #10504378
- LEARN TO PLAY WITH OUR NOTE GUIDE: Fantastic Finger Guides take the mystery out of learning the notes on the viola, and are a practical visual aid to improve your ear for music by helping you learn the notes with ease
- GREAT FOR BEGINNER AND INTERMEDIATE LEVELS: Beginners and intermediate students who use our guides learn the language of music from the first day, and gradually build knowledge of the notes with every lesson
- EASY-TO-USE STICKERS: Each note decal has self-adhesive on the back end so that the notes won’t slip around while you are playing your instrument - and once you learn your notes, the sticker comes off without leaving a sticky mess
- IMPROVES FINGERBOARD NAVIGATION: Our patented 2 color - 3 shape design (with triangles for open strings, squares for natural notes, and blue ovals for sharp/flat notes); Position numbers on one side to shift into more advanced positions, and a sharp/flat direction indicator helps you better navigate the fingerboard
- NOTE THE DIFFERENCE: Weston’s Fantastic Finger Guides were created over several years by an orchestra teacher who wanted a practical yet fun way for his own middle school orchestra students to learn their notes
User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a guide for a 16.5" viola |
Answer: | I have not made the 16.5" viola finger guide yet. I am hoping to release the 16" in January 2021. I will update this question when I release the 16.5" finger guide. |
Question: | Is this measured by the length of the viola or the length of the strings |
Answer: | Great question! To be honest I designed it by sound, a tuner, and trial and error. I learned in the process of designing the viola finger guide that the construction of the 15 1/2" viola has more variance in size than the cello, violin, and smaller size violas. They call it a 15 1/2" viola but it might be actually 15 3/4" or something in between. Not sure why the luthiers haven't decided upon one standard size as we find more so with the violins. After making the basic design on my own viola, I tested the finger guide on as many violas that I could find at 5 different shops and on the student instruments in my own orchestra program. I probably tested it on at least 15 different brands. Fortunately the squares/dots allow for enough wiggle room in variance of the different sized violas. I have also found that if there is any note that is a little off due to your viola being a little larger or smaller it will be the 4th finger notes. We offer FANTASTIC customer service and care about all the violist in the world. Fantastic Finger Guides is here to make sure you are supported in your journey to learn such a wonderful instrument. If for any reason it doesn't align well enough to use, reach out to us at Fantastic Finger Guides. We have several hacks you can try out that we are happy to share in more detail. |
Question: | will the 15.5 size fit a 16 inch viola |
Answer: | It is not meant for the 16" viola. A few customers have purchased the 15.5" finger guide and then cut it into strips to adjust for the slightly wider distance for a 16" viola. In the future I may be able to make a 16" finger guide. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will 15-16" strings fit my 16.5" viola |
Answer: | Some times the strings are too short or have a long wrapping, and may happen that this comes out of the nut, over the fingerboard. So that depends of the length of the neck that are (wrongly) longer in big violas. Maybe Helicore have enough length to avoid this. I have a viola like you describe and the C string has the wrapping over the beginning of the fingerboard, but it works. I think Helicore has a a good length. If you do not find a solution it is possible to cut the beginning of the fingerboard and make a thicker nut to make short the neck , about 5 3/4 from the beginning of the fingerboard and the border of body of the viola |
Question: | is the Helicore viola C string the same as the 5th string in a violin set |
Answer: | That depends. If you are buying a set for a 5 string violin, it's assumed you are getting a C,G,D, A and E. Otherwise, some violin sets include 2 E strings because those don't typically last as long as the other strings. |
Question: | How do these compare to the sound of the Dominant and Sensicore viola strings? I'm considering all three to replace my newbie Preludes |
Answer: | This is a clear tone of features, it is recommended of viola strings for advanced users.Normal is made to thinner than the string, we have a good response and stable playability. We have adopted a multi-stranded steel core twisted steel wire, in a stable pitch, you familiar quickly. |
