12 best 6 strings bass
A 6-string bass, often referred to as a "six-string bass guitar," is a musical instrument that belongs to the bass guitar family. It is an extended-range bass guitar designed to offer a wider range of pitches and tonal possibilities compared to the traditional 4-string bass guitar. Here's what you should know about 6-string bass guitars:
String Configuration: A 6-string bass guitar has six strings, which are typically tuned in a standard tuning known as B-E-A-D-G-C, starting from the lowest-pitched string (C) to the highest-pitched string (B).This tuning extends the range of the instrument both in terms of lower and higher frequencies compared to a 4-string bass.
Extended Range: The additional strings on a 6-string bass provide greater versatility in terms of pitch. This allows bassists to access lower notes and higher harmonics, expanding their musical possibilities.
Playing Techniques: Bassists who use 6-string basses often employ a variety of playing techniques, including tapping, slapping, and popping, to take advantage of the extended range and achieve unique tonal effects.
Music Genres: While 4-string basses are more common in many music genres, 6-string basses are frequently used in progressive rock, jazz fusion, metal, and experimental music styles where the extended range and versatility are advantageous.
Scale Length: 6-string basses come in various scale lengths, with some models featuring longer scales to accommodate the extra strings and maintain proper tension. Shorter scale lengths may also be available for those who prefer a more compact instrument.
Construction and Materials: These basses are typically constructed with solid bodies made of various woods, such as maple, mahogany, or ash, and may have different neck and fingerboard materials. The choice of materials affects the instrument's tone and overall feel.
Pickups: 6-string bass guitars often come equipped with multiple pickups, such as single-coil and humbucking pickups, to capture a wide range of tonal nuances. This allows bassists to shape their sound to suit different musical styles.
Strings: Due to the extended range of a 6-string bass, specialized sets of strings are designed for this instrument. These strings are thicker and are designed to handle the lower frequencies associated with the added strings.
Challenges: Playing a 6-string bass can be more challenging for bassists accustomed to 4-string instruments due to the increased string count and wider neck. However, with practice, many bassists find the expanded range and tonal options worth the effort.
Customization: Many manufacturers offer customization options for 6-string bass guitars, allowing musicians to choose their preferred woods, finishes, hardware, and electronics to create a personalized instrument.
In summary, a 6-string bass guitar is a specialized instrument that offers extended tonal possibilities and an expanded range compared to traditional 4-string basses. It is favored by bassists in certain musical genres and styles where the additional strings can enhance their creative expression and sonic capabilities.

User questions & answers
Question: | How are the mediums compared to lights, i am looking at these for my first string change and i don't know what i have now. Is there a big difference |
Answer: | Not really a big difference. The most common gauge is 45-65-85-105 (Custom Light). If you like a bit more stiffness in your G and D strings, go with Medium. If you like a little looser E and A, go with Light. If you don't care one way or the other, just go with Custom Light.Mind you, again, it's not a huge difference. It's subtle. I like my E and A a little softer so it's easier to dig in, so I buy Lights (45 65 80 100). |
Question: | Is this a decent guage for drop b on a bass |
Answer: | been using EXL-170 for years with drop B and D tuning 4 string - fender P bass no buzz super clear |
Question: | Do these strings have a real bright tone? I am playing praise and worship music and not sure I want that real bright tone |
Answer: | If you want to avoid any bright tone, then consider taped, flat finish strings that are designed to reduce string and fret noise. Your pick ups and playing style will also affect your tone. These are middle of the road for nickel wound strings. |
Question: | Would the Medium gauge be good for drop D |
Answer: | In my opinion they are good for a drop D |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this length work with the squier/fender bass vi |
Answer: | Yes, the length is cut for 30" scale - they are plenty longer. I put them on the Ibanez Crossover VI bass and they did sound too 'dead', more so than flatwounds sound on a regular 4-string bass. I took them off and put on an equivalent set of roundwounds. This bass came with the D'Daddario set made for Bass VI instruments but they were a bit too light on the bass end. La Bella are great strings and the guages here did give a greater bass-presence to the instrument, just not an attractive one. |
Question: | Do these strings sound bright |
Answer: | No, they are very mellow since they are flat wound. La Bella also makes a round wound set in the vintage correct gauges if you want a bright timbre. |
