13 best guitar polishes

Guitar polishes are a crucial part of maintaining the appearance and longevity of your instrument. Here's the lowdown:

Types of Guitar Polishes:

  1. Spray Polishes: These are convenient and easy to use. You spray the polish on the guitar's surface and then wipe it clean. They often leave a protective layer that helps repel dust and fingerprints.

  2. Cream Polishes: Creams are applied with a cloth and are great for removing minor scratches and swirl marks. They often contain conditioning agents that can nourish the wood and enhance its natural luster.

  3. Wax Polishes: Wax polishes create a thin protective layer on the guitar's finish. They are effective in preventing moisture and dirt from damaging the wood. Beeswax-based polishes are popular for this purpose.

Application Tips:

  • Always apply polish to a clean, dry surface.
  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth to avoid scratching the finish.
  • Apply the polish in a gentle, circular motion.
  • Be cautious around hardware and delicate areas to avoid buildup.

Frequency of Use:

  • How often you polish your guitar depends on how frequently you play and the environmental conditions. For regular players, a light polish every few weeks is generally sufficient.

Avoiding Certain Ingredients:

  • Some polishes contain silicone, which can create a slick surface but might cause issues with future finish repairs. It's advisable to use silicone-free polishes, especially on vintage or high-end guitars.

Conditioning the Fretboard:

  • If your guitar has a rosewood or ebony fretboard, consider using a separate conditioner specifically designed for fretboards to keep the wood hydrated.

Polishing Hardware:

  • For metal hardware, like tuning pegs and bridge components, a metal cleaner or polish is recommended. Make sure it's safe for the specific type of metal used on your guitar.

Storage:

  • Store your guitar in a case or on a stand to prevent dust buildup. This reduces the frequency of polishing.

By incorporating guitar polish into your instrument care routine, you're not just keeping it looking good; you're also protecting it from the wear and tear of regular use. Anything else you want to know about guitar care?

User questions & answers

Question: can I use in clasic wood guitar
Answer: I think you can use it on the ukulele cause guitar and ukulele are similar.
Question: Can you wash this microfiber cloth in the washing machine
Answer: Yes. It's a guitar cleaner, polisher, wax, and protectant all in one. It comes with a 100% buy back guarantee if you don't like it. You shake the bottle, mist the surface of the guitar or towel, wait a few seconds for sweat and dirt to soften, then wipe it off gently with a microfiber or similar soft non-abrasive cloth. A slight haze from the Carnauba wax will remain which is easily buffed off with a clean cloth and your guitar will look beautiful and be protected. Check out MusicNomadCare.com.
Question: is it good for nitrocelulose finishing
Answer: You're safe. It will not damage a rosewood fretboard, but you have applied a wax and cleaner designed for sealed surfaces like the soundboard. This same company makes a fretboard oil that is great. Try using their product designed for fingerboards on the guitar. I also have used it on the bridge with excellent results. Now in that case you may have the reverse and get the fingerboard oil on the soundboard, but the Nomad One can then be used to clean that surface. I used a Q-tip to apply on the bridge and in the saddle groove.
Question: So this cleans?? Can it clean the strings
Answer: No, what you need is the Music Nomad Detailer. It's made for satin finishes.

User questions & answers

Question: what is the best way to remove 4 years of dirt??? like what should i use to "scrub" the fret bored
Answer: You want to use the Lemon Oil and clothes enclosed in the kit fretboard cleaning. I went over my fretboard twice, as it had been several years since last playing. It did a good job of cleaning, as well as restoring a little oil back into the slightly dry fretboard.
Question: Is this safe to use on my Martin dreadnought from the 1960's
Answer: You bet. I used this on my Taylor Martin Breedlove Epiphone Yamaha... no problems in any way. Just good results.
Question: Says not to use around finish checking. i play a '79 martin d-35. it is full of finish checking. should i not use this polish? just received my order
Answer: I wouldn't. The polish doesn't contain any abrasives, so I'm guessing the concern with checked finishes is either that moisture can get into the small cracks in the finish and/or that you could lift checked finish off the guitar by buffing with a cloth. For a high-quality vintage like your Martin, I'd talk to a luthier or a Martin dealer on what would be appropriate.
Question: Is the polishing cloth microfiber
Answer: Yes, however it is little. You may want to invest in Amazon basic microfiber cloth. After each playing session, it is good practice to tto wipe down the strings and the neck to remove body oils from your guitar before you bag/case it.

Question: How will this work with on a Gibson with nitrocellulose finish
Answer: Hello, I've used on my new guitar, but I'm not sure if this will clean up wax. Try google for that information. Thanks,Leo.
Question: Does it work well for eliminating and repelling dust? Dust in the little hard to reach crevices drives me nuts
Answer: Yes it can. I have used it on just such a guitar. Works great. Good luck.
Question: Good night, This product is for used polyurethane
Answer: Yes, it is a cleaner and a polish. Spray on the microfiber cloth, and wipe away. Turn cloth over to clean dry area, and do a finish polish. I have four guitars with three different finishes, one of which is satin. It doesn't make it shiny, which tells me it doesn't put any kind of oil or other agents on it; But it is as clean and smooth as a whistle! Good stuff.
Question: How will this work on a Gibson VOS finish guitar
Answer: I have never used it on the fret board or the strings. I use a guitar brush for that and it does a great job.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use this with a cotton fiber buffing wheel? On Gloss Poly
Answer: Yes my son has always used it and he is very particular about his guitars
Question: My guitar head stock is developing a cloudy finish. Will this product fix it
Answer: I don’t believe so... I have normal play/light scratches on some of my guitars. What it is excellent at, is removing sweat or finger marks on the finish... Guitars are supposed to be played, and if they are, you will get some scratches.... that’s the nature of the beast... Lizard Spit (used often) will protect you finish from elemental erosion.
Question: Can someone please tell me exactly, exactly what to do,how to do it,how long to leave it on,and what will happen if polish is left on too long
Answer: According to the manufacturer, all Lizard Spit products have been silicone-free for 18 years.
Question: Does this product contain silicone
Answer: This can be used on an open pore wood but my recommendation would be to go lighter on it than normal. Perhaps spray it on the cleaning cloth rather than the guitar. I have an open pore ash guitar and I clean it with this with no issues.

User questions & answers

Question: I have a blonde silvertone acustic archtop guitar no finish on it would this product be good to use on it
Answer: I wouldn’t use it on my maple boards because the polish will make your strings dirty sooner. I’d use a product made for fretboards or very small amounts of lemon oil myself. Be careful to never use too much, it becomes a mess and can seep in under the finish around your frets and stain the fretboard. Not in a good way either, in case you like relic guitars. Good luck!
Question: Can i use this product on my martin dc-16gte? i'm a noob and am trying to take care of my martin
Answer: Yes you can use it on other brands. The good thing about the Gibson polish is that it won’t damage ‘nitro’ finishes. Most new guitars made by other companies are not finished in nitrocellulose. You may want to find out what kind of finish your guitar has. Turtle wax spray works well on poly finishes and was for a time recommended by Taylor guitars. I use it on my older (80’s) Fenders as well as my Taylor acoustic. I do have nitro finished guitars too and for those I use the Gibson polish., but I could use it on almost all of my other guitars too. Just wouldn’t be comfortable using it on my Taylor. Hope this helps.
Question: Would the fretboard f-one oil also be good for a mahogany body
Answer: Absolutely not! Unless of course you're looking to polish, protect, and shine. Then you find this to be the best guitar polish ever. Do not however, use it on a coronet.
Question: They make a point of saying the fretboard oil contains no lemon oil. I'm wondering what's wrong with lemon oil
Answer: No - but cleaning cloth is available everywhere. Use the softest possible. Gibson polish is great on any brand guitar. I have used it for 50 years.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this product remove light surface scratches
Answer: This product is good for finished guitar top and sides and back. It wouldn’t do much if it is unfinished
Question: Is this product safe for water based finishes
Answer: Honestly. I think it would be just fine. With that said, if that were my Martin I would follow Martin's suggested care and use martin cleaner and polish for gloss finishes, and just dampen a microfiber cloth with a little water to use on satin finishes.
Question: Is this the stuff to put on the tacky, soft, gummy nitro finishes? Or the harder nitro finishes
Answer: No it wouldn't! F-one oil it is make for conditioning the fretboard only. If you need to clean or polish a mahogany body there's plenty of product for that!
Question: I bought this to clean off the oxidation on my pickups and the oxidation is still there after multiple attempts. I am doing something wrong
Answer: I'm sure there are many opinions on this, but you can find a lot of information on the internet by doing a quick search like "Is lemon oil safe for guitars?" or "Is lemon oil safe for fretboards?" Here is a link to an article that may be helpful and provide some insight: https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/columns/gear_maintenance/cleaning_your_fretboard.html I am sure you can find many others as well. User questions & answers

Question: Is this wax safe to use on a Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane finish
Answer: Yes, this is a safe/mild product you can comfortably use. It has a nice odor too!
Question: I have a fender Highway 1 Strat with a nitro finish that is dull, would this be safe to use to shine it up? I dont like the satin or matte finish
Answer: I am not sure it would work converting the highway one to shiny with this polish. I have a satin finish Breedlove I converted to gloss by taking 0000 steel wool and lightly roughing up the stain finish and then using a buffer wheel on my drill and some turtle wax I buffed that sucker out to a glossy shine. I have a Highway one Tele also, but haven't converted it to the glossy finish. There's youtube videos on how to covert satin to gloss. That's how I found out how.
Question: Is this product safe for use on nitro
Answer: I can only speak for my own experience, I have used it sparingly on my Gibson’s , so far all is good. Room is maintained at proper humidity
Question: Can i use this on the fretboard
Answer: Short Answer: No.Most quality guitars have hard unfinished (unsealed) wood as their fretboards such as rosewood or ebony. For those types of wood you want to use an oil that will soak into the wood and keep it well hydrated and nourished so that the porous wood doesn't dry out. For those type of fretboards the product that is recommended is Music Nomad's F-ONE fretboard oil, it was designed for that exclusive purpose. A little of F-ONE goes a long way. Most climates will do with one to two applications a year. I live at 7,000 feet (air is much colder & dryer the higher you go) and even here I only apply it three times a year. I use it on all my guitars & basses. Now the exception to using F-ONE Oil is finished sealed wood fretboards like the maple fretboards used by Fender. The easiest way to tell if it is sealed or unsealed is to feel it and inspect it closely. Does it have a clear coat? Is it painted? Does it feel smooth like the rest of the body? If the answer is no, it feels porous and like bare wood then it is unsealed. Use the F-ONE oil. If the answer is yes then it is sealed, don't use the F-ONE oil, it won't soak in and just make a mess as it just sits on top of the sealed paint/clear coat. For sealed fretboards you can use wax if you want, I wouldn't. Shiny fretboards remind me of cheap Chinese knock offs. They bling the hell out of them & sound like deadwood crap.If I did own a sealed maple fretboard I would probably just use Music Nomad's One if wanted to shine up the fretboard. It's a cleaner with a touch of wax. More likely knowing my preferences I would use Nomad's Premium Guitar Cleaner. It has no wax. But that's just my preference. All my guitars have rosewood fretboards, even my main axe a 90's Fender Jazz Bass. Hope this helps & keep woodsheding.
