11 best capo for classical guitars
A capo for classical guitars is a useful accessory that allows guitarists to change the pitch and key of their instrument without altering the tuning of the strings. It is particularly popular among classical and fingerstyle guitar players. Here's what you need to know about capos for classical guitars and their relevance to instrument accessories:
Purpose: A capo is a clamp-like device that is placed across the fretboard of a guitar. Its primary purpose is to shorten the vibrating length of the strings by pressing them down onto the fretboard. This effectively raises the pitch of all the open strings when compared to playing without a capo.
Key Transposition: Classical guitarists often use capos to transpose a piece of music to a higher key without changing their fingerings or chord shapes. This is especially helpful when accompanying singers or other instruments that may require a different key.
Tonal Variation: Capos can also be used to create different tonal qualities. Placing the capo closer to the guitar's body (lower frets) results in a brighter and more treble-rich sound, while placing it closer to the headstock (higher frets) can produce a warmer and mellower tone.
Types of Capos: There are various types of capos available for classical guitars, including:
- Spring-Loaded Capos: These are the most common type, with a spring mechanism that allows for easy one-handed placement and removal.
- Trigger Capos: Similar to spring-loaded capos but with a trigger mechanism for quick adjustments.
- Elastic Capos: These are made of elastic materials and can be stretched over the fretboard. They are less common for classical guitars but can work effectively.
Material and Design: Capos for classical guitars are typically designed to be gentle on the instrument's neck and strings. They often have rubber or silicone padding to protect the guitar's finish and maintain intonation.
Usage Tips: When using a capo on a classical guitar, it's essential to ensure even pressure across all strings to avoid tuning issues and buzzing. Guitarists should also check the intonation and make any necessary adjustments after applying the capo.
Versatility: While capos are commonly associated with classical guitars, they can also be used with other types of guitars, such as acoustic and electric guitars, to achieve similar pitch and tonal adjustments.
In summary, a capo for classical guitars is a versatile accessory that allows guitarists to change the pitch, key, and tonal qualities of their instrument without retuning. It is a valuable tool for musicians, especially those who play classical and fingerstyle guitar music, and it is an essential part of the guitarist's toolkit for achieving musical versatility.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i use this for yamaha pacifica 112j electric guitar |
Answer: | Sure, the tension is adjustable and so it would work fine on an electric guitar. |
Question: | Will this work with a 2" nut and a radiused (24") fingerboard |
Answer: | I don't have that particular configuration but I'll give you some information and I hope it helps. I got the standard steel-string model for my (standard) old Martin and the Classical model for my Taylor 712 with a 1 3/4" nut and a somewhat flatter fingerboard (I don't know the radius). The standard actually works on the Taylor but the Classical model seems to give me fewer tuning issues with the 6th string. The PW Classical model actually has a slight curve so it might be fine with a 24" radius but I couldn't say for sure. |
Question: | Is there a Shipping cost |
Answer: | Shipping costs depend on the seller. If you look at the offers the shipping cost is directly below the price shown. In addition, before checkout the entire cost of everything is shown. There are over 40 different sellers so there are a lot of different shipping costs. |
Question: | I know there are capos specifically made for mandolins/banjos, but I was wondering if this was also adaptable for intonation purposes. Thanx |
Answer: | I've used mine on several of my mandolin with success. Intonation was very good, so much so that I plan on getting the model specifically for mandolin/banjo from Planet Wave to not have it be so large and hitting my hand. It's perfect for my 6 and 12 string guitars, though. I have Dunlop and Shubb models that are very good, but I'm enjoying the Planet Wave design and intonation BEST. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Could someone measure the soft part that lays on the strings of this kyser classical capo? my current capo pad is 2 1/8", and i need it to be longer |
Answer: | The rubber part of the classical guitar kyser capo is 2 and 3/4 inches and smartly covers the strings of my Spanish Classical guitar don't worry. |
Question: | Will this work on 3/4 size classical guitar |
Answer: | It should without any problem. Both radii should be flat. |
Question: | Is this Capo for nylon string acoustic guitars |
Answer: | I use mine on a steel string, but the pressure it applies to the neck and strings shouldn't be a problem for nylon strings. The only issue would be if the capo is long enough (because nylon string guitars usually have a wider neck). The rubber on the capo is 2 3/8 inches. |
Product description
When the Shubb capo was first introduced more than 30 years ago guitarists throughout the world fell in love with it. They're still in love with it today. We've given it a few tweaks through the years, but its basic mechanical principle remains the same: a unique over-center locking mechanism that provides an unrivalled combination of power, speed, accuracy and ease of use. One smooth flip of the lever locks it securely in place, and removes it just as quickly. And the Shubb capo is BY FAR the best at not creating tuning problems. Its soft, resilient rubber is specially designed to work just like a fingertip, so it doesn't bend the strings over the frets. Its closing action is just like your hand, so it doesn't pull the string off center. As a result, no re-tuning is necessary! This year our standard line of capos received its biggest tweak yet: we've upgraded our most popular models - the "C" series nickel plated capos - to include the design features formerly available only on our deluxe, stainless steel models. And the price remains the same!
- Fits most classical guitars
- 2.25" wide, FLAT fretboard
- Polished nickel finish
- Roller design provides smoother action, superior geometry, and reduced wear
- Contoured lever makes capo easier to use
User questions & answers
Question: | Do y’all think that the tension on this capo would be enough to work with a 12-string? Thank you in advance |
Answer: | Because a 12 string guitar has a slightly radiused fingerboard, you'll want to use a Shubb specifically designed for a 12-string. Try this one..C3K Shubb Capo Noir Series 12 String Guitar Capo - Black Chrome |
Question: | Are there any problems using this capo with an acoustic or electric guitar |
Answer: | Jack: No problems. Adjust it to your guitar's neck size, snap it on, and play. My guitar instructor likes the Shubb better than his capo. I recommend the C2 highly. Very easy to use and very well made. |
Question: | Will this work on a wide neck true Classical guitar |
Answer: | The C2 was designed specifically for Classical Guitars with Nylon strings and wide necks. (2"+ width) Therefore is should work perfectly. |
Question: | Work on half size classical guitar |
Answer: | Thanks for the question. Yes, the C2 Shubb Capo will work fine on a 1/2 size Classical guitar. The key is that it is for Nylon string guitars with FLAT fingerboards. (As opposed to Radius fingerboards found on most steel string or Western Guitars.) |

User questions & answers
Question: | So only the universal one works for electrics? Please do a much better job of explaining |
Answer: | The Wingo capo seems to work very well with all my 6 string acoustic and electric guitars with standard neck width of 1 11/16 at the nut. It would probably work with up to 1 3/4 nut width too. A classical guitars neck is somewhere closer to 2". BTW, it did not work on my 12 string with a 1 3/4 nut. I went with a Shubb and it worked great. I do like and recommend the Wingo. I hate the capos that are Huge spring things. Ugly and ackward, but easier to move or mount. So Each to His Own. Hope this helps."Keep on Playing!" |
Question: | Will this fit on a 6-string bass |
Answer: | I don't have a 6 string bass. My guitar is 1 and 3/4 " at the 2nd fret and there is a 1/4 " of the capo hanging off the fret board. The capo is excellent. I have had it for a couple years and use it almost every day. It started feeling sticky one time .I sprayed a little wd40. It is like new. May buy another one to replace a different brand ( planet waves) I also have ,cause it's wore out and there's nothing to make it work better . Amen !!! |
Question: | Which type would be best for an acoustic 6 string guitar with a modified V neck profile? The longer, flat arm or the shorter, curved one |
Answer: | My daughter has a 6 string acoustic guitar v neck profile, she likes this capo better than what her instructor has. He actually bought the same one and likes it as well. |
Question: | Anyone try it on the ukulele |
Answer: | No I haven't. It looks to big for a ukulele, but you can always order it and find out. It may be best to go out to a store where you can try it out instead of online :) |
