12 best acoustic bass pickups

Acoustic bass pickups are devices designed to capture the sound of an acoustic bass guitar and convert it into an electrical signal that can be amplified and further processed. These pickups are crucial for musicians who want to play their acoustic bass guitars in live performances or recording settings. Here are some key points related to acoustic bass pickups:

1. Types of Acoustic Bass Pickups:

  • Piezo Pickups: These are among the most common types of acoustic bass pickups.Piezo pickups work by sensing the vibrations of the guitar's body and converting them into electrical signals. They are often mounted under the bridge saddle.

  • Soundboard Transducer Pickups: Placed directly on the soundboard (top) of the guitar, these pickups capture the vibrations of the guitar top, providing a warm and natural sound.

  • Magnetic Pickups: Similar to those found on electric bass guitars, magnetic pickups use magnets to sense the vibrations of the strings. While less common on acoustic basses, they can offer a different tonal character.

2. Installation:

  • Internal vs. External Installation: Some pickups are installed internally, either under the saddle or on the soundboard. External pickups, such as clip-on or soundhole pickups, can be attached to the outside of the guitar and are often easier to install.

  • Professional Installation: For internal pickups, especially piezo pickups that require precision, professional installation by a luthier or guitar technician is recommended.

3. Preamps:

  • Importance of Preamps: Acoustic bass pickups often require a preamp to boost the low-level signals generated by the pickups. Preamps can also shape the tone and provide additional controls such as volume and tone adjustments.

  • Onboard vs. External Preamps: Some acoustic bass guitars come with onboard preamps, while others may require external preamps, which can be standalone units or integrated into an amplifier.

4. Tonal Considerations:

  • Natural Sound Reproduction: A good acoustic bass pickup aims to reproduce the natural sound of the instrument accurately, capturing the nuances of the strings, body, and overall tonal characteristics.

  • Feedback Resistance: Properly designed pickups help minimize feedback issues, especially in live performance situations where high volumes are common.

5. Popular Brands:

  • Fishman: Fishman is well-known for its high-quality acoustic pickups, including the Fishman Matrix and Fishman Rare Earth series.

  • LR Baggs: LR Baggs offers a variety of acoustic pickups, such as the Anthem and M1 series, known for their transparent and natural sound.

  • Shadow: Shadow pickups, like the Shadow Nanoflex and Shadow SH Sonic, are recognized for their clear sound reproduction.

6. Choosing the Right Pickup:

  • Playing Style: Different pickups may suit various playing styles. For example, if you play with a lot of fingerstyle technique, you may prefer a pickup that captures the nuances of fingerpicked notes.

  • Budget: There are options available for different budget ranges, from more affordable clip-on pickups to higher-end internal pickups with advanced features.

In conclusion, acoustic bass pickups are essential for amplifying the sound of acoustic bass guitars in various performance settings. The choice of pickup depends on factors such as the desired tone, installation preferences, and budget considerations.

User questions & answers

Question: will this work on a vintage ovation balladeer without drilling
Answer: You can't drill a hole in your vintage ovation balladeer. Because the back of the guitar is not made from wood but a composite material. We suggest purchasing NEO-SP30 soundhole pickup or SBT-10 soundboard transducer for your guitar. And please note NEO-SP30 only fit for steel-string acoustic guitars whose soundhole diameter is between 3.82" to 4.33".
Question: Can I connect this to a loop pedal
Answer: Yes, you can connect to the loop pedal and then to the amplifier.
Question: Do I need to loosen the strings to insert it
Answer: Usually, there is no need to loosen the strings for installation. But if your guitar soundhole diameter is as close to the minimum size that we described (3.82” to 4.33”) or your string is too tight to get through, and it’s not so easy to install the pickup on your guitar, we recommend to loosen the strings for easier installation.
Question: Can this pickup detect guitar drumming ( hitting the guitar body to make it sound like a drum
Answer: Yes, it can detect the tapping sound. But the tapping sound from Amumu NEO-SP30/31 is not as big as the sound from Amumu SBT-10 because SBT-10 is a vibration transducing pickup which transduces all the signal from the soundboard and the body. We suggest you try Amumu SBT-10

User questions & answers

Question: All the images show it attached to a violin. Is the product truly transferrable to an acoustic upright bass
Answer: Yes, it is. I bought it for my son, who plays acoustic bass at Otterbein University. He has been using it for nearly a year without any issues.
Question: I need the wood version not the cooper. how do i select that
Answer: Sorry I can't help you. I did not know they had a wood version. The copper rocks on my upright.
Question: Has anyone had the same problem as I with this pickup? I bought this pickup brand new from David Gage himself. The pickup lasted for exactly 11 gigs
Answer: I have the violin pickup by Gage and have used it for years with no problem. My bass player uses one like yours and so far so good. I would return it and have them give you another, as the tone quality is excellent.
Question: The pick-up doesnt need any type of battery to work or continue to function
Answer: No, this is a passive pickup. I have the violin version and run it out through a preamp and then to a pa system. I have used this set up for 10 years and it is excellent. I play with a guy who uses this pickup in his upright bass. He runs it directly to an amp and it works great when you limit the vibrations on the pickup by bending it up a little away from the face of the bass.

Answer: They are passive pups.
Question: where are the tone and volume controls
Answer: Mounting screws yes. Foam no.
Question: Does it work with nylon strings
Answer: Hi there, mine also hum a bit too, they are a much higher output pickup than the stock pickups are. When I am playing them I don't notice it though. The tone more than makes up for the hum when im not playing them. If yours are humming/buzzing loudly it could be a grounding issue though.

User questions & answers

Question: where is this item made
Answer: No idea. Bought this for my boyfriend it was 1/2 the price of the one offered by Stewart MacDonald. He loves it--- perfect gauging string height
Question: I tend to use 32nds for setting up string heights on my bass. How do you use that area when it's in the middle of the rule
Answer: You use the 64ths. two 64ths = one 32nd. Either that or saw a hole through your bass and stick the tool through
Question: Does this item come with instructions, and is it made of steel
Answer: No instructions. It is essentially just a ruler. But the size, shape and multi-denominations make it especially designed for guitar setups. It is made of high-quality (stainless?) steel with black etchings.
Question: How would you measure 4/64 and 6/64 with this tool? Would it be possible
Answer: It has a spot for measuring 64th's on the bottom left on the front side, but it only goes to 48/64, which should certainly be enough for measuring string height.

Easy-to-Play Neck

With its comfortably rolled fingerboard edges, this instrument’s neck creates an incredibly comfortable fret-hand feel that's ideal for beginning players or experienced pros alike.

User questions & answers

Question: How does it turn on? (Or is mine defective
Answer: is your volume on the pickup turned up? is it plugged in correctly? you should be able to tap on it and hear the noise through the amp.
Question: Will this work if I stick it on the composite side (back) of my Ovation
Answer: It will stick to your forehead, if you place it there, but the sound quality will suffer if you do that. Seriously though, before you stick it anywhere, hold it in different places on your guitar with it plugged into the amp so you can choose a location that produces the best tone. I had one of the original Ovations, so I am familiar with their construction. I can't predict the best spot. You just have to try it before you stick it. BTW: The plug end that goes into the transducer is a small jack vs the standar 1/4" jack that plugs into the amp. (BTW, they send a bunch of stuff you don't need)
Question: How long is the cable provided
Answer: According to the details it's 3 meters. Kind of short if you're using it to perform and need to be able to move around. Perfect if being used by the amp to practice.
Question: So does this stick to the outside of the guitar/uke/banjo
Answer: Yes but it is easily removed. As a side note, it is extremely sound sensitive. As a result, I wound up putting 3 layers of stickers on it to deaden it a bit. You need to play around with different locations on your instrument.

User questions & answers

Question: Has anyone tried replacing the electronics in a jasmine acoustic electric with one of these
Answer: I am trying to tackle the same project of replacing the electronics of ankther guitar. Did you use this product?
Question: Where do i place the square with the screw in the middle that came with my le 305 joyo preamp
Answer: That is a 1/4 inch jack I think you are talking about and that is were a guitar cable runs to a amp. These are usually placed on the bottom of guitar
Question: How do you mount the je-305 piezo wire? do you glue it to the inside of the guitar
Answer: No, this is a coaxial under saddle pickup. If you check YouTube you should find a video of a luther doing an installation. The correct procedure involves drilling a hole at an angle at the end of the saddle slot and then routing (using a bull nose bit) under the saddle to create a clearance for it. Seek a luthier if you aren't comfortable or don't have the proper tools for the job.
Question: Where on my guitar do i place the square with a screw in the middle that comes with the joyo le 305 preamp
Answer: Strap your guitar on and look down at the side of your guitar. I put mine on the forward part of the valley. It has to be a little flat to fit the flat plate. Don't put it in the valley or at the creSt of curved wood or it won't sit flat
