11 best guitar effects processor

A guitar effects processor, also known as a guitar effects unit, is a device that alters the sound of an electric guitar to create various effects and tones. These devices can be standalone units or part of a pedalboard setup. Here's an overview of guitar effects processors:

  1. Signal Path and Placement:

    • Guitar effects processors are typically placed in the signal path between the electric guitar and the amplifier. The signal from the guitar passes through the effects unit, allowing the effects to modify the sound before reaching the amplifier.
  2. Pedal Tuners:

    • Pedal tuners are a type of guitar effects pedal used to tune the guitar accurately. They mute the signal to the amplifier while tuning, allowing for silent tuning on stage.
  3. Single Effects vs. Multi-Effects:

    • Single Effects Pedals: These units provide one specific effect, such as distortion, delay, or reverb. Guitarists can combine multiple single effects pedals to create a custom effects chain.
    • Multi-Effects Processors: These units offer a variety of effects within one device. Musicians can access and use multiple effects like distortion, modulation, delay, and more from a single unit. Multi-effects processors often have LCD screens and user-friendly interfaces for easy customization.
  4. Electric Guitar Effects:

    • Electric guitar effects can be broadly categorized into several types:
      • Gain-Based Effects: Including distortion, overdrive, and fuzz, these effects modify the gain and clipping characteristics of the guitar signal, creating different levels of distortion.
      • Modulation Effects: Effects like chorus, phaser, flanger, and tremolo modulate the audio signal to create altered and dynamic tones.
      • Time-Based Effects: These include delay and reverb, altering the perception of time and space in the audio signal.
      • Filter Effects: Wah-wah pedals and envelope filters modify the guitar's tone by altering frequencies.
      • Pitch Effects: Such as pitch shifters and harmonizers, modify the pitch of the guitar signal.
  5. Amplifier Effects Loop:

    • Some guitarists use an effects loop on their amplifier to integrate effects. The effects loop allows inserting effects after the preamp stage, preserving the natural amp tone while applying effects to the amplified signal.
  6. Presets and User Customization:

    • Many multi-effects processors allow users to save and recall presets, enabling quick access to specific effect combinations and settings.
  7. Power and Connectivity:

    • Guitar effects processors can be powered by batteries or external power supplies. They connect to the guitar and amplifier using standard instrument cables.

Guitar effects processors offer guitarists a wide range of creative possibilities, allowing them to experiment with different sounds and styles. They are essential tools for shaping and defining a guitarist's unique sound and expression.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the usb port mean it has interface capabilities (can i record with it without an audio interface to pc
Answer: The PC recognizes the USB connection as a MIDI interface, which can be used to switch between patches.
Question: Can you delete only the previous loop that you recorded instead of the whole loop
Answer: No you can not delete part of a loop. In some other loopers you can undo one or more previous loops, but with the G1on you can not. When you delete a loop that was made on top of a a rhythm loop all the loops get deleted. It kind of sucks! This is about the only fault I can find w/ the G1on.
Question: I just bought a digitech-360 and found out i can't use the looper with the drum machine.. can you use the drums with the looper on this unit
Answer: Yes you can select a drum pattern and start playing it, then switch to looper mode and record while playing to the drum sounds. The drum sounds don't get recorded though, but you can play to the beat unlike the digitech 360.
Question: whats the difference between this and spending hundreds on different pedals
Answer: Lol! A lot, and not that much. This makes for an excellent practice pedal/tone lab. It's perfect for trying out different sounds and pedal combos and learning about basic signal path for FX. Some people even gig with this unit, though the G3X and G5X are considered more "Pro. Grade" though they have basically the same FX engine. Picking, buying, and building your own custom boutique pedal board is also rewarding and can provide some more unique and better quality FX... But you can literally spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars. Plus you'll need to try out the different pedals and build out a board. But individual pedals does give you flexibility DURING a performance. Note that the G1Xon has only two stomps and a wah. (Look at the manual, it's more complicated than that.) But basically (tl:dr) if you already know what sounds you want and you're a professional, spend hundreds on different pedals. If you want to experiment with different tone/FX and are primarily rehearsing and doing house of worship & coffee houses, buy the G1Xon.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it have a guitar synthesizer effect
Answer: Not that I’ve seen. It’s not like a MIDI controller but there are some strange effects that are pretty out there.
Question: Can you use the looper pedal at any time? i've currently got a boss me-80, but it seems the looper is only available in manual/no custom effect mode
Answer: The looper pedal is just one of the many effects that you can include in your chain, so yes, you can include any of the several versions of a looper pedal in any effects chain, as long as you have the empty slot(s) and the available processor power. You just got me wondering what might happen if you were to include two or more loopers in one chain. I think I'll go try it!
Question: Do you always have to hold for the tap tempo
Answer: The tap tempo is a specific setting that you need to navigate to. It's actually pretty easy to do in a live setting.
Question: Does the g3xn use batteries like the g3x
Answer: Mine just has a wall-wart, no battery compartment.

User questions & answers

Question: How close in features and sound is this to the harley benton version. Looks very similar
Answer: It comes with a splitter cable so that you can run the pedal at 18v by combining two 9v lines from your pedal power supply. It does not come with an instrument cable nor it's own power supply. You'll need a power supply for this pedal.
Question: Could the power supply be used with 220v power socket
Answer: I purchased the Dunlop ECB004 to use with mine, and it works very well. I also use the daisy chain from my Boss tuner that powers my other pedals when I don’t feel like using the extra outlet.
Question: Is that the volume pedal that is attached
Answer: Yes, like most od pedals it has some fizz. I use a Boss noise gate pedal and it cancels out all of the fizzy. That said this is an awesome overdrive pedal.
Question: Does this have octave and envelope filter effects for bass
Answer: Yes, it has an internal gain pot and an internal presence pot.

User questions & answers

Question: It has amp simulators? I play live and I don't have an amp, I just connect "direct", would it work well
Answer: I believe it is 15. Dont quote me on it but I believe it's 15...And you will most definitely need to use a power supply with this particular pedal...I use a One Spot for my 3 pedals....It's just easier on the mind knowing its down there whenever I'm gigging....Question in return, ,,Do you Definately want digital as opposed to analog?...
Question: Can I run the preamps through my real tube amp with no problems or is that only for amp simulation for without a amp? Don’t want to mess up my amp
Answer: Yes the delay pedal can run on a 9V battery
Question: Can you bypass the amp simulations and just use the different effects pedals
Answer: Yes it can self oscillate. And with the dirty repeats it sounds amazing. Joyo did an amazing job on this pedal. But it shouldn't be called a digital delay. It has dirty tape echo with warm repeats. Sounds kinda like a eh memory boy Without all the bells and whistles. I've bought 2 of these because I likes it so much and wanted to use them in unison for different timings.
Question: Does this have a looping feature? If so, what is the maximum length of the loop that can be created
Answer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fj5AgDItbl0 Please click the link and you can find the video, hope you like our wireless system, thank you!

ME-80 Guitar Multiple Effects Processor

Mobile, battery powered, and filled with a diverse selection of flagship-quality BOSS amps and effects, the ME-80 is the ideal compact tone processor for performing guitarists. A friendly knob-based interface makes it simple to dial in great sounds in seconds, while easily selectable operation modes offer the flexibility of individual stompbox-style on/off or instant recall of complex multi-effects setups. Unique new footswitches deliver twice the control of previous designs for efficient and intuitive effects switching, patch selection, and real-time sound shaping while playing on stage. The free BOSS TONE STUDIO software unlocks even more tonal possibilities, providing a cool graphical interface for tweaking and organizing sounds on your computer, plus a web connection to BOSS TONE CENTRAL for direct access to free gig-ready patches created by top pro guitarists and much more.

A Huge Selection of BOSS Effects in One Pedal

No matter what style you play, it’s easy to craft your own personal sound with the ME-80’s wide range of built-in effects. A complete history of gig-ready BOSS tone processing is at your command, from multiple overdrives and distortions to wahs, mod effects, pitch shifters, delays, and beyond. BOSS’ groundbreaking Multi Dimensional Processing (MDP) technology is represented with the unique, spacious ambience of Tera Echo and the distinctive tone-shaping possibilities of Overtone. Updated COSM preamps include new additions such as Crunch and Metal, plus an AC preamp designed for acoustic/electric guitar. The onboard expression pedal can be used for foot volume and pedal effects like wah, octave shift, and Freeze, and it’s also possible to control effects parameters such as mod rate, delay oscillation, and more for expressive real-time sound shaping.

Instant Gratification with Dedicated Knobs

Unlike typical menu-driven multi-effects processors that are complicated and unintuitive, using the ME-80 is as easy as using a stompbox. Effects are organized into eight logical categories that can all be active at the same time. Seven categories contain multiple effects types to choose from, plus dedicated knobs for selecting a type and adjusting it with a set of parameters you’d find in the pedal version of the effect. The Pedal FX category has its own knob for quickly assigning a particular effects type or function to be controlled by foot with the expression pedal. With this familiar and friendly interface, you’re able to dial up and play great tones instantly, just like using a large pedalboard filled with your favorite stomps. But a major advantage over that pedalboard is that you can to save all the current knob settings to one of the ME-80’s 36 user patch locations, allowing you to recall custom effects configurations at the touch of a pedal.

Stompbox Immediacy or Multi-FX Power: You Decide

The hands-on experience that stompbox control provides is perfect for tweaking tones as you go. However, there are times when switching among an entire group of preset effects is more efficient, such as when you’ve set up complex tones for different songs. The flexible ME-80 supports either approach, giving you the best of worlds. In Manual mode, the categories function like individual stomp effects, with instant adjustment via the panel knobs and on/off control with dedicated footswitches. By entering Memory mode, seven footswitches are automatically reconfigured to select user or preset patches and patch banks, letting you recall complete multi-effects setups directly. One footswitch on the ME-80 is dedicated just for mode switching, so you can toggle between Manual and Memory modes any time you want, even in the middle of a song.

New Footswitch Design Delivers Twice the Control

The ME-80 offers easy usability while performing, with eight multifunction footswitches for direct control of effects on/off, bank/patch selection, and mode switching, plus convenient access to alternate functions such as tap tempo, tuner, looper control, and more. A special control (CTL) function is also assignable in each patch, letting you toggle grouped effects on/off or adjust a specified parameter in real time. The newly developed footswitch style provides two switches in the space occupied by one in previous designs, allowing BOSS to equip the ME-80 with a generous array of foot-operated controls while keeping the unit extremely compact and mobile. In addition to the eight main footswitches, the expression pedal is equipped with an integrated toe switch that toggles between foot volume and the current Pedal FX setting.

User questions & answers

Question: Can the low BPM speed of the different rhythms be changed
Answer: Not sure what you mean by speaker. This is a pick-up that plugs into a guitar amp. The amp you use depends on your personal preference. I use this on an old Silvertone, tuned open D and play it through an old tube amp, all for a very specific sound.
Question: Does it have a tuner
Answer: No it is the small 1/8" you will need an adapter to run a 1/4' cable.
Question: Can I connect my laptop or mp3 player as aux in and play along
Answer: An electric guitar with two pickups benefits from the customizable sounds produced not MORE sound. In order to use two, you would have to rewire them so you could switch on or th other on/off. There would also need to be one at bridge and one near neck. I got ONE for a friend. He LOVES it. Good luck
Question: Does it have a bypass
Answer: No batteries needed.

Answer: sure
Question: Can you use it with an external footswitch

BOSS GT-001 GUITAR EFFECTS PROCESSOR

The GT-001 packs the acclaimed amps and effects of the GT-100 Version 2.0 in a stylish desktop processor for your home studio or mobile rig. Its small size fits easily into any workspace, while the intuitive interface makes it simple to dial up world-class tones for recording and practice. In addition to the guitar input, an XLR mic input is included for capturing vocals or acoustic instruments, and the built-in USB audio/MIDI interface provides a direct connection for creating music with your favorite DAW. On top of that, a newly developed guitar-to-MIDI function lets you have fun with Guitar Friend Jam and other computer programs from a normal guitar input—no special pickup required! Available as a free download, the BOSS Tone Studio software provides a cool graphical interface for tweaking tones from your computer, plus access to BOSS Tone Central for free studio-ready patches and much more.

PRO-LEVEL SOUND FOR RECORDING AND JAMMING

Under the hood of the GT-001’s stylish, streamlined body is a full-featured BOSS multi-effects processor with premium tone. Its COSM amps and effects are equivalent to the GT-100 with Version 2.0 software—BOSS’ top-of-the-line processor for stage performers—and patch data can be shared between the two units. Dual effects chains allow you to create sophisticated tones with two amps and series/parallel effects routings, providing pro-level performance for all your music productions. Advanced parameters include a channel divide function that lets you switch effects chains manually or according to frequency or playing dynamics, and adjustable left/right mixing for flexible audio capture in your DAW.

A POWERFUL TOOL FOR DAW MUSIC PRODUCTION

Via a single USB cable, the GT-001 functions as a high-quality audio interface for your Mac or Windows computer. It’s easy to capture great amp and effects tones directly into your DAW, and four audio channels provide lots of flexibility for recording, re-amping, and mixing. For example, you can listen to the GT-001’s amps and effects while capturing an unprocessed signal in your DAW, simultaneously record processed and dry tones on separate tracks, and listen to your mix while re-amping and adjusting guitar tones through the GT-001. In addition, the ability to power the GT-001 with either the included AC adapter or a computer’s USB bus offers great convenience for home setups, studio sessions, and mobile recording with a laptop PC.

ENJOY COMPUTER-BASED MIDI INSTRUMENTS FROM YOUR NORMAL GUITAR

The GT-001 includes a monophonic guitar-to-MIDI function that allows you to play soft synths and other MIDI instruments in your computer from your normal axe, with no special pickup required. Powered by newly developed BOSS technology, this cool and convenient function is great fun when working with Roland’s free Guitar Friend Jam software, and also lets you experiment with using your guitar to create MIDI sequences in music production software.

EDIT AND ORGANIZE SOUNDS WITH BOSS TONE STUDIO

Available as a free download for Mac or Windows, BOSS TONE STUDIO gives you an intuitive graphical interface for creating and editing GT-001 effects patches from your computer via USB. The software also makes it easy to organize and archive patches, and to load them as needed for different songs and styles. If your computer has Internet access, BOSS TONE STUDIO provides an integrated connection to the BOSS TONE CENTRAL website, where you can preview and download free patches created by top guitar pros directly into the GT-001. These premium patches also work with the GT-100 Version 2.0, and can be easily customized with the editing tools available in BOSS TONE STUDIO.
