13 best amp heads

An amp head, short for amplifier head, is a key component in an electric guitar or bass guitar amplification setup. It's a separate unit that contains the amplifier circuitry and controls, responsible for generating the sound and shaping the tone of the instrument. Here's what you need to know about amp heads:

  1. Amplification: The primary function of an amp head is to amplify the electrical signal from an electric guitar or bass. It takes the weak signal generated by the instrument's pickups and boosts it to a level suitable for driving a loudspeaker or speaker cabinet.

  2. Separate Unit: Unlike combo amplifiers, which integrate the amplifier and speaker in a single unit, amp heads are stand-alone devices. They are commonly used in conjunction with external speaker cabinets to allow for flexibility in sound reinforcement.

  3. Controls: Amp heads typically feature a range of controls to shape the sound. These controls may include knobs or switches for adjusting gain, volume, equalization (bass, midrange, treble), reverb, and sometimes built-in effects like distortion or delay. The specific controls can vary widely depending on the make and model of the amp head.

  4. Power Output: Amp heads come in various power output ratings, often measured in watts. The power output determines how loud the amplifier can get and is an essential consideration when selecting an amp head for a particular musical context, such as studio recording or live performance.

  5. Tone Shaping: One of the critical aspects of an amp head is its ability to shape the tone of the instrument. Different amp heads, based on their design and circuitry, can produce a wide range of tonal characteristics, from clean and sparkling to heavily distorted and aggressive.

  6. Tube vs. Solid-State: Amp heads can use either vacuum tubes (also known as valves) or solid-state circuitry. Tube amp heads are known for their warm, organic sound and natural overdrive when pushed. Solid-state amp heads are often more reliable, lightweight, and cost-effective but may lack the "tube warmth."

  7. Portability: Amp heads are generally more portable than combo amplifiers because they do not include speakers. Musicians can pair them with different speaker cabinets to achieve specific tonal qualities or adapt to various performance scenarios.

  8. Compatibility: It's essential to match the impedance of the amp head to the speaker cabinet to prevent damage to both components. Many amp heads offer multiple impedance settings to ensure compatibility with a range of cabinets.

  9. Effects Loop: Some amp heads feature an effects loop, allowing musicians to connect external effects pedals or processors in between the preamp and power amp stages for more precise control over their sound.

  10. Brand and Model Variations: There is a wide variety of amp head brands and models available, each with its unique features and tonal characteristics. Musicians often choose amp heads based on their preferred sound, playing style, and budget.

In summary, amp heads are essential components in electric guitar and bass amplification setups, offering musicians control over their tone and volume. They are versatile and widely used in various musical genres, providing the foundation for powerful and expressive live performances and studio recordings.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i plug directly to passive PA speaker (8ohms /900w
Answer: 16 3/8 X 21 7/16 (Just over 16 1/4 and just under 21 1/2)
Question: Do You Need a Cab For The amp To Play? Ive Never Used and Orange
Answer: I would not recommend washing the filter because it may be hard to get all areas rinsed out and dried enough. Vacuumming works great if the do it at least every 30-45 days. Even though they recommend replacing the filter every month, I usually don't replace my filter but once every 3 months. (It really depends on how dirty your filter becomes). You want a clean filter as much as possible to help keep your energy costs down. When it starts to wear out, it will no longer be as affective as it should be, and will cause your heat pump to work extra hard. Hope this helps.
Question: Can I record straight into a mixer from the headphone out? Is a DI box necessary
Answer: These don’t come in two packs, I don’t think. Once you change the shape of it, it’s ruined forever. I’m sure you are looking at the wrong filter.
Question: How loud can this get with a 1 12? Loud enough to play in a good sized gym
Answer: This is a washable reusable filter that is used in the ac unit...rather than the cheap throw away filters.

Orange Micro Terror

The Micro Terror is a global phenomenon. Taking its inspiration from the original Tiny Terror, this miniature incarnation couples a valve preamp to a solid state output section for enormous tones that makes a mockery of its pint-sized frame.

Weighing in at under 1 kilo, the Micro Terror is arguably the most portable amp head on the market. When paired with its matching PPC108 cabinet, the Micro Terror’s Aux Input and Headphone output make it a perfect practice partner, small enough for even the most cluttered sideboard.

However, don’t be fooled by its miniature footprint because size is the only thing that is small about this amp. With a high tensile steel casing, the Micro Terror is built to the same high standards as the rest of the Terror family and features a single 12AX7/ECC83 preamp valve, coupled to a solid state output section. The depth of sound (and volume) that this little thing pushes out is truly staggering, with Orange growl and bite in abundance. What’s more, the Micro Terror can be used with any 8-16 Ohm speaker cabinet

The most compact and portable Terror amp

Modelled around the original lunchbox amplifier, the Tiny Terror. The Micro Terror is the original micro amplifier.

Single 12AX7/ECC83 pre-amp valve

Helps to bring unparalleled levels of dynamics and tone for an amplifier of this size.

20 Watts RMS solid state output

More than capable of powering our largest 4 speaker cabinet, the PPC412. It’s compatible with any cab with 8 ohm or greater power handling.

Auxiliary input

Plugin any phone or audio player to jam along to songs making this a great amplifier to practise with.

Orange Terror Series Ambassadors

'Last summer while starting up a European tour I was given a list of amps that were available and noticed the one I was currently using was not on the list. I decided to take every head on the list and after a day of driving everyone nuts with my signature amp testing style (A blend of terrible blues licks and A power chords) it was clear that the Orange Rockerverb was going in the truck for the tour.''

-Ler of Primus

Orange Terror Series Ambassadors

'I’ve spent quite a few years searching for a versatile guitar tone that allowed me to speak through my guitar. A few years back I stumbled upon an old OR120 in a vintage guitar shop and it was love at first plug in. In the past, I have seen bands I liked play Orange and had always been interested in their tones and trying one out for myself but until that day I hadn’t had the opportunity. I’m just glad our paths finally crossed!'

    User questions & answers

Question: Can you gig fine with this
Answer: Yes the power cord do have a mute button
Question: could you plug it into a speaker cabinet
Answer: Yes the software can be updated very easily at home. The Max 360c can even be updated through WiFi.
Question: Can it be plugged into a PA system for live performance
Answer: The screen could be brighter. Dont think the colors of arrows can be changed.
Question: How would this do for a practice amp for a Bass
Answer: I think that the 0.6 watts each measurement, 1.2 watt total must be a mistake, off by a factor of ten. I've tested them against my portable ten watt powered stereo speaker (five watts per channel). They're slightly louder than the portable speaker. I would bet money that these are six watts each, twelve watts total. I'm sorry I don't have a more sophisticated method of testing, but, no way are they just 1.2 watts total.

    User questions & answers

Question: Why does it say one watt output when it states on the back of the amp that it sucks 25 from the wall
Answer: Output power and current draw are two completely different things.
Question: Does this work on both 110v and 220v input
Answer: Mine is only 110v and it has no switch on the back to select 220v so i assume it is only a 110v model.
Question: What speaker cabinet is suggested for this head
Answer: I have the Blackstar HT-112 MKII 1x12" Guitar Cabinet. But any good 1x10 or 1x12 cab will work. The head will work with 4,8 or 16 ohm cabs.
Question: Which Blackstar footswitch works with this head
Answer: A 2-way footswitch can be connected. The footswitch will enable the selection of the Clean and Overdrive channels, and the two voices on each Channel. The correct footswitch is an FS-16, which has two switches. (The FS-4 only has one switch.)

Answer: No expiration date on the bottles. I compared it with a bottle I bought from a store last month and it did not have a date either. The labels were identical though and had a label copyright of 2018.
Question: would this work for high-gain metalcore
Answer: The font is tiny. I don’t believe there is any alcohol. There is a phone number for you to call with questions. 1-800-258-3425.

Answer: The ac30 does not have a distortion mode. What I love about this one is it is super clean sounding. I'm 100% sure you can buy a piece to go from it to a pedal than to the head set, but take it from me don't get there ac30 headset or any of the headset period with this. Buy a gaming headset, with a Mic. To everyone else sounds like your singing to no music, but sounds so clear to the user. Ac30 is better than I could ever hope for I recommend it 100% to anyone.
