User questions & answers
Question: | Where can I get a replacement holder/sleeve for this thermometer |
Answer: | My suggestion would be to try contacting the manufacturer directly. Their website is www.cdn-timeandtemp.com Good luck! |
Question: | can it be used for turkeys and roasts |
Answer: | I've used it on whole chickens, turkeys and on tri tip roasts with perfect results |
Question: | What does LL.L reading mean |
Answer: | I'm considering purchasing a digital probe type thermometer myself and I don't see it specifically stated on this unit, but on a lot of others I researched the LLL/HHH was to let you know your temperatures were too low or too high to register, depending on that particular thermometer's temperature parameters. This one is good for: -40 to +450°F/-40 to +230°C. So anything below that temp, you'd get the LLL warning, above it, you'd get the HHH warning. I know you asked 6 years ago, but if I can't help you, maybe I can help the next one with that question!🤷🏼♀️ Have a happy ☺!! |
Question: | Can you recalibrate this thermometer |
Answer: | I don't know how to answer your question specifically, however, these instructions for recalibrating give some indicators regarding temperatures.1. Place the stem into at least 1 inch of crushed-ice with water. Do not let the stem touch the bottom of container.2. Press the CAL button for 2 seconds. CAL appears on the display for 2 seconds, then 32.0°F appears. And this thermometer has a built in fail safe for recalibration. If the ice/water mixture isn't within the range of 30deg F to 34 deg F you will see an error message on the screen (ERR). Wait a bit longer for the mixture to come down in temp and try again. So you pretty much are in the zone with the recal on this one. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what does the "hold" button do |
Answer: | Holds the temperature so it can be read outside the oven or grill, when it's too hot or the display has to look the opposite way |
Question: | Can you calibrate this thermometer |
Answer: | No. You cannot calibrate this thermometer. |
Question: | Can this be calibrated |
Answer: | In order to calibrate such a probe, the manufacturers would have to add a calibration potentiometer to the circuit. Without opening up mine I doubt it was made for field calibration. You can test the accuracy of the device by filling a 8 oz glass with ice and water. Allow to set for 3 to 5 minutes and insert the probe. That water ice mixture should be 32 deg F. what your device shows should be considered where 32 is. That means if your device shows 29 you are off by -3 deg. this should not be a big deal a plus or minus 2 degs. Also, as the battery degrades, it will affect accuracy. Test your probe once a month and replace battery based on any drifting away from what you started out. I have used these types of probes for many years in hvac and they fail long before I lose accuracy. |
Question: | What is the difference between this model and the CDN DTQ450X ProAccurate Quick-Read Thermometer |
Answer: | Not sure I can answer your Question but this little thermometer is sturdy, accurate and I use it all the time. I've had it a couple of years and it's working great. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where is this made |
Answer: | In fine print at the bottom of a product sheet on DDN website, it states "Made In China". But it works well, is easy to read, and there are so many things we use manufactured in China that I don't have a huge problem with it. |
Question: | Can you leave in Oven while food is cooking |
Answer: | Yes, it has sort of a hook from which you can hang it on a rack. |
Question: | Can you wash this |
Answer: | You cannot soak in water. You have to wipe clean with soap and water or clean heavily soiled thermometer with baking soda and water. |
Question: | The pictures show 2 different types of product. Which one is it? There is another $10 model. What's the difference them |
Answer: | I bought this thermometer in May 2020 and paid $13.99 and my order shows the one pictured without the red line. The one I received was the one with the red line under the temperature scale. This appears to be the one in the picture in the oven and matches the $10 model. It seems in retrospect that I got cheated but I never checked after ordering so my fault for not paying attention. The thermometer works well but I would pay close attention if you order to make sure you get the correct model. |

User questions & answers
Question: | IS IT DISHWASHER PROOF |
Answer: | Yes, have no problem with washing but I usually hand-wash this item to get off all residue from item I am cooking. Stainless steel cleans nice and easy. |
Question: | Is this also an instant read thermometer? Can I use it to test the temperature in my new Percolator Coffee Maker which may not be hot enough and should be 200 degrees |
Answer: | It isn't instant but should read a temperature in 15-30 seconds. |
Question: | is there a calibration nut at the base of the post |
Answer: | I purchased this around around 12/18 & it does not work tried to calibrate it in broiling water nothing happened tried moving the bolt again nothing, moved black arrow nothing happens does not even move a tinge I would say based on my experience try a different one I would send it back but for what I paid for it not worth paying the postage to return |
Question: | can this thermometer be left inside of a roast as it cooks or is it a pierce in meat and read temperature type of oven thermometer? thanks |
Answer: | Although I haven't tried leaving it in the oven yet, the package says its ovenproof. So it should be fine. You just can't broil with it in. If you are searing the meat first. You should insert the thermometer after you turn it off broil |

IRM190 - ProAccurate Meat/Poultry Ovenproof Thermometer
CDN’s ProAccurate Meat/Poultry Ovenproof Thermometer (IRM190) is perfect for professional results with roasts, meat and poultry cooked in conventional or microwave ovens, on the grill, rotisserie, or in smoke ovens. This INSTA-READ thermometer is a precision instrument, yet is rugged and durable. Use it for quick, accurate readings after food has been removed from the microwave oven — or leave the IRM190 in food when cooking in conventional ovens. The slender stainless steel stem penetrates meat easily, and minimizes the loss of juices. The temperature sensor is between 'dimple' and tip of stem. For best accuracy, stem should be inserted into food to dimple or higher. From meats to chocolate, the oven or the freezer, whatever you need a temperature reading on, CDN has the thermometer for the task. Featuring advanced technology, quality construction, easy-to-read displays and user-friendly operations, CDN thermometers are essential tools in any kitchen.
MYT200 - Meat/Yeast Thermometer
CDN’s Meat/Yeast Thermometer (MYT200) will easily measure the temperature of meat or poultry. The scale shows the USDA recommended temperatures for safe cooking. The thermometer should be inserted at least 2 inches into the meat or poultry and away from any bone. If the meat is an irregular shape, check the temperature in several different places. (This is especially important when cooking poultry.) It will take 1-2 minutes for the temperature to register. The MYT200 thermometer can remain in food during cooking. Meat should be allowed to 'rest' for 10 to 15 minutes after it is removed from oven. This allows time for the meat’s internal temperature to stabilize and the juices to redistribute. This will result in a roast that is both juicier and easier to carve. The MYT200 can also help you know when your bread is perfectly cooked. Insert the stem of the thermometer into the center of the bread. Expect the bread to be done when the temperature is 190–200 F. Yeast, a living organism, is considered to be the magic ingredient in bread-making. It is dormant until combined with warm water (proofed). The ideal temperature for this is 105–115 F/40–46 C. At temperatures of 120 F/49 C and above the yeast is destroyed. This is why it is important to use the MYT200 thermometer to check the temperature of the liquid the yeast is combined with. Add the yeast to be dissolved when the liquid temperature is 105–115 F. Active dry yeast is specified most often in bread recipes. For best results, it is recommended that yeast be stored in the refrigerator or freezer.

Question: | where is this made |

Question: | can i just put this in my turkey without doing anything else? never did calibrations and don't understand. can i just put in bird before i cook it |
Answer: | I can't answer you on that question for you, I don't think you can leave in Turkey. It didn't come with instruction for calibrations. The way I judge if turkey is done is the ready pop up turkey comes with and also if the leg comes off the bird without trouble pulling. If you keep poking turkey the turkey comes out dry when done. |
Question: | can this thermometer be left in an oven during the cooking of a roast |
Answer: | No - Found this out too late. I was under the impression that this was a conventional type of oven thermometer that you insert and leave in the roast while it is cooking. It melted! |
Question: | What tools are required to recalibrate the thermometer? (hex wrench, pliers, screwdriver |
Answer: | Hi, there is a hex nut that holds the stem to the dial. I measured it, and it is 11mm. That is an unusual metric size. An adjustable wrench would work perfectly. The nut isn't very tight, so pliers would work OK.You would of course need an accurate thermometer to set it to.Boiling water is OK if you live close to sea level. At 3000 ft altitude, water boils at 206 degrees F.At Denver (mile high), water boils at 202 degrees. My thermometer did not come with a wrench. That would be a good idea.Mine was set close enough for cooking, maybe not for lab work. |

A handy feature is the black marker that slides along the side of the dial so it can be set at a desired temperature. When the high-visibility red needle reaches the marker, a quick look establishes that cooking is done. Made of heat-resistant oven-proof glass, the dial makes the thermometer safe for oven use as well as dishwasher. A five-year warranty covers the thermometer against defects.--Ann Bieri

CDN covers the thermometer with a five-year limited warranty.
IRM200 - ProAccurate Meat/Poultry Ovenproof Thermometer
Designed for food safety and savory, tasty results when roasting meat or poultry. CDN’s ProAccurate Meat/Poultry Ovenproof Thermometer (IRM200) features an extra-large 2-inch (5.1 cm) dial with a durable laboratory glass lens and a 5-inch (12.7 cm) stainless steel stem. It is waterproof and features a handy temperature guide and target range indication to take the guesswork out of roasting. The IRM200 stands out as a value over time, because it can easily be recalibrated with a simple boil test. This means that you can count on accurate temperature readings year after year.

For absolutely delicious, tender turkey or other poultry, try deep-frying, a “new” method that has been used in the South for decades. The result is a bird that is juicy but has no greasy taste. Speed is another bonus— a 14-pound turkey typically cooks in an hour or less. The more oil that is used, the less the oil temperature will drop when the turkey is added. The simple secret to properly deep-frying is to use a sufficient amount of oil, at the proper temperature, and cook for the correct time. The IRL500 allows you to make sure that the proper oil temperature is maintained. This thermometer can be used with any size deep fry kettle. From meats to chocolate, the oven or the freezer, whatever you need a temperature reading on, CDN has the thermometer for the task. Featuring advanced technology, quality construction, easy-to-read displays and user-friendly operations, CDN thermometers are essential tools in any kitchen. CDN covers the thermometer with a five-year limited warranty.
Popular in Southern cooking for decades, deep-fried whole turkey is gaining a national audience. When cooked properly its delicious, juicy, and has no greasy taste. Each fry kettle has its own instructions, but generally for best results the oil should first be heated to between 375 and 400 degrees Fahrenheit, and after the bird is added, maintained at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. With its adjustable stainless-steel clip, this 12-inch-long thermometer is ideal for attaching to any size vat or kettle to monitor oil temperature. Large and easy-to-read, the 2-inch dial registers temperatures ranging from 100 to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, and can be left in after cooking is complete to ensure the oil has completely cooled. A 14-pound bird usually cooks in approximately 45 minutes. The protective sheath for the thermometer features a pocket clip and loop to conveniently hold the probe. Since a large amount of hot oil is required, turkeys and other poultry should always be deep-fried outdoors. A five-year warranty covers the thermometer against defects.--Ann Bieri

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you stick in the oven and use it as oven thermometer |
Answer: | Yes. You can use it in oven like thermometer. |
Question: | Is the length adjustable? Meaning, can you adjust the clip down on the probe? My fry pot is 11.5" tall, so I wanted to be sure I could make it fit |
Answer: | The clip is adjustable. It slides up and down the stem/probe. The temp is just under 12 inches long. The entire stem of the thermometer is 12 inches, so length should not be a problem for you. My fryer is about 18 inches deep. The probe just needs to reach into the cooking oil. I've fried a half dozen turkeys of the past three years. Having an accurate thermometer was a big help. Because of your question I took the time to post my own picture with notes under the advertiser's picture. I hope this helps. |
Question: | Can this thermometer be calibrated with a wrench |
Answer: | Yes. To calibrate, use a wrench to adjust the hex nut beneath the dial. |
Question: | do you know where this is made |
Answer: | I am sorry, but I don't know where this is manufactured. However, this link may help: http://www.cheftools.com/library/cdn/IRL500.pdf. Also, at the very bottom of the pdf document in very small type are the words "Made in China". |

The Perfect Deep-Fried Turkey Thermometer

Tips for Deep Frying your Turkey:
A deep-fried turkey is an excellent dish, but it is one that must not be prepared inside the average home kitchen. For safety reasons, it is best done outside. The oil is hot, and it will bubble when the turkey is first lowered into the kettle. Lifting the turkey out of the kettle after it is cooked is more safely done if it is cooked on a heat source that is close to the ground.
Note: These instructions are general in nature. For more exact information refer to the instructions that came with your deep fry cooker.
Procedure
1.Determine the correct amount of oil to use — 1 to 2 inches above the bird. A convenient way to do this is to place the raw bird in the kettle and fill it to the proper depth with water. Remove the bird and note the height of the water on the side of the kettle. This is the height to which oil should be added. Empty the water and thoroughly dry the kettle.
2. Remove the plastic pop up timer and plastic strap that holds the legs together, if present.
3. Wash, dry, and weigh the bird. Cooking time is about 3.5 minutes per pound. Let the bird come to room temperature.
4. Add oil to a completely dry kettle and heat it to a temperature of 375 to 400°F. The IRL500 may be clipped to the inner, if used, or outer kettle. The clip of the IRL500 can be adjusted to accommodate extra-wide rimmed kettles. Simply bend the longer of the two arms inward.
5. Season the bird as desired.
6. If an inner kettle is used, place the bird inside. If using a single kettle, wire the bird securely so that it can be safely withdrawn from the hot oil after it is cooked. CAUTION: Use an insulated mitt and slowly lower the bird into the hot oil. Be sure to protect yourself from the steam that will be generated.
7. The oil temperature will drop after the bird is added. Maintain a temperature of about 350°F. A 14-pound bird will take approximately 45 minutes to cook.
8. After the bird is cooked, carefully remove it from the oil and let it drain. It may be helpful to have a rack to support the bird to allow for proper drainage. Tip: Meat should be allowed to “rest” for 10 to 15 minutes, after it is removed from oven. This allows time for the meat’s internal temperature to stabilize and the juices to redistribute. This will result in a roast that is both juicier and easier to carve.
9. Leave the thermometer in the kettle to ensure the oil has completely cooled before disposal. Clean the thermometer using soap and warm water.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a way for me to calibrate it |
Answer: | Hay, Lauri! There is no way to calibrate. All the mechanism is internal with no access. |
Question: | Is it waterproof? can you place it in boiling water to see if it is correctly calibrated |
Answer: | It would be your oven that would need calibration....have never put in water. It hangs on the rack in oven to ensure that the oven is heating at the right temp and if not can adjust accordingly...if set at 350 and temp is registering 325 on thermometer, then can adjust the oven temp higher. Don't think it is meant to be submerged in water. There are other themometers for liquids. This is for oven temps. |
Question: | Will this work in my Master Forge propane smoker |
Answer: | yes but you may need to open smoker and pick it up to read a good way to verify its temp. |
Question: | can you use it in a charcoal grill |
Answer: | Maybe - I've used it in my GAS grill. I wanted to know how hot it was getting. The thermometers that came on the grill were suspiciously inaccurate. They said 350; this says 550! I don't use it all the time in there. For regular use, I use a probe thermometer to check the doneness of what I'm cooking. I use this in the grill occasionally to: a) check accuracy of original thermometers; b) check 'zoning' - using indirect heat to cook ribs; to try to keep heat at 250 to 300; and c) to check 'zoning' to see difference in lo & hi setting on different burner & their respective areas. Once I know this info, I don't use it every time. It has discolored the metal - it's now almost bronze looking. But the glass? faceplate is beginning to have a brownish film. I've probably used it in the grill 5 to 10 times. I can see that if I used it in there all the time, the faceplate would probably become opaque. In all of that - it worked just fine. I have no way to calibrate it; but its readings make more sense than what I had previously. |

User questions & answers
Question: | The dial on my new thermometer seems stuck between 350 and 400 degrees when at room remperature. Is this how it should function |
Answer: | You may be looking at the wrong end of the needle arm. At room temp, the tail end is indeed pointing between 350 & 400. |
Question: | Does it have to be connected to anything or does it just rest on a shelf in the oven |
Answer: | It does not connect to anything. I let mine hang from the oven rack with the built in hook. It also has a base that let's it stand on the rack or other flat surface. |
Question: | How accurate is it |
Answer: | They are fairly accurate but you should give them optimal conditions to give you a proper reading: The first time, place it in the middle rack and in the center of the rack. Very important: Make sure to allow enough time for your oven to preheat (Do not rely on your oven's built-in notification). A minimum of 15 minutes should usually do it. The thermometer should then slowly climb to the correct temperature. |
Question: | How long does it take to get accurate temp |
Answer: | Forever. Uh, I have a Taylor liquid oven tuermometer, but thought I'd get one of these after reading or watching reviews from America's Test Kitchen. My thermometer was inaccurate as gauged against my old thermometer AND meals I've cooked many times before -- they were overdone when going by its temperature. Cakes, pizza, etc. and using the recipe's recommended cooking time. They sent me another and it TOO was inaccurate in the same direction. Forget precisely, but showing a temp 25-50 degrees LOWER than the actual temperature. I'll not buy another one. I've read that liquid oven thermometers become inaccurate over time due to the liquid evaporating or whatever, but mine seems to be spot-on still. |
