Answer:	As another customer said, the sponge inside does reduce dissolved solids, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that it makes the water soft. I'd say "softer," but we live in Florida, with very hard water, so - in other areas - this filter might do everything you need, and more. Also, it seems to last a very long time, at least in terms of removing chlorine. We were pleased with this, and used this filter for over a year. The main reason we changed was because a local hardware offered a better filter at a ridiculously low price, and we've stayed with that.
