Important Tips for All Temperature Readings

• Always wait for three flashing lines on the display before every reading. Wait at least 15 minutes to take a reading after eating, drinking, exercising or bathing.
• If you or your Kinsa were outside on a cold day, wait until you are used to the new temperature before taking a reading.
• A person’s body temperature will fluctuate depending on the time of the day. The best method to determine your own normal temperature is to record it twice a day (early morning and late afternoon) when feeling well. The average of the two is considered your normal body temperature.

Underarm Readings

Wipe armpit with a dry towel and make sure that no clothes are in the way. Place the thermometer probe in the armpit and keep your arm pressed firmly against the body. In general, a normal underarm temperature is considered 35.8°C - 37.2°C (96.5°F - 98.9°F). Also, please note that underarm readings are typically 0.6°C (1°F) lower than oral readings; this is perfectly normal. The Kinsa app automatically takes underarm readings into account when calculating the severity of the fever, but it does not artificially add that 0.6°C (1°F) to the temperature reading.

Oral Readings

For oral readings, always place the probe tip of the thermometer in your mouth’s heat pocket - under the tongue at the back of the mouth. Keep your mouth closed while the temperature reading is being taken. The temperature in one spot of the mouth can be very different from another so always put the probe tip in the same heat pocket for every reading. A normal oral temperature is considered 36.1°C - 37.7°C (97.0°F - 99.9°F).

Rectal Readings

Consider applying a bit of petroleum jelly on the QuickCare tip to make it easier to insert. Place your baby on a firm surface, either on her stomach or back, with legs lifted up to the chest (think diaper-changing position). Insert the probe tip about ½ inch inside the rectum. Never insert the probe past the metal tip. Stop if you meet any resistance. Hold QuickCare between two fingers while keeping your hand cupped around your baby's bottom (you might need to squeeze the cheeks together to hold it in place). Remember, rectal temperatures tend to be about 0.3°C (0.5°F) higher than oral and 0.6°C (1°F) higher than underarm readings. In general, a normal rectal temperature is considered 36.4°C - 37.9°C (97.5°F - 100.3°F). If you'd like to verify your results, be sure to wait 5 minutes first for the most accurate second reading.

Ear temperatures accurately reflect core body temperature, since the ear drum shares a blood supply with the temperature control center in the brain: the hypothalamus.

Smart Ear thermometer monitors the infrared heat radiated from the eardrum and surrounding tissue and detects once an accurate temperature measurement has been taken.

Taking a Temperature

Ensure the ear is clear of earwax and debris and the tip of the thermometer is clean.

Choose one ear to use for readings and stick to it. There is a small temperature difference between both sides of the head and so choosing one ear will produce more precise readings.

Smart Ear uses an infrared ray to measure the temperature inside the ear. To ensure the most accurate reading, please use the proper technique:

For infants under the age of 1, gently tug the ear straight back to straighten the ear canal before taking a reading.

For children over the age of 1 and adults, gently tug the ear straight up and back before taking a reading.

Cleaning & Storage

The probe tip is the most delicate part of the thermometer. It must be clean and intact to ensure accurate readings. If there is any debris left on the sensor window at all, it will throw off readings.

Answer:	Yes. I am still not sure if I am an idiot for paying so much for a thermometer, but it's worked great for our baby. It takes just one swipe from the middle of the forehead.

Answer:	This thermometer gives no advance warning that it thinks its battery voltage is getting too low, and worse comes. I took my temperature with it this morning and handed it to my wife, who was surprised to see its display repeatedly telling her to "contact thermo.withings.com". Both batteries measured 1.28 volts (using an accurate Fluke DVM), low but sufficient to keep the display cycling for over 15 minutes. (The manual says you'll need new batteries every 8 months, which is about how long ours lasted.) We have sadly learned that this is not a smart thermometer, but a stupid one. After I put in new batteries, it did not simply return to working as it had been. Now it won't take a temperature. The only thing Withings gives me to work with is another "setup" through its iPhone app, yet that app refuses to pair using Bluetooth to go through "setup" again. And neither the thermometer nor the app has a reset/restore button or function. Our $100 thermometer has become a brick IN ONLY 8 MONTHS and one set of batteries.

Answer:	The battery life is two years - but is simply replaceable with standard batteries. Not sure what would limit it to five years - it must be the sensors used to measure temperature - but I don't know any detail on that. Even if only 5 years it is worth it. Peace of mind with childrens' temperature and keeping track of medication is worth a lot!

Answer:	Yes, and for these two reasons. 1. My toddlers (1.5 and 3.5 years old) would never let me keep the armpit thermometer or ear thermometer in long enough to get a reading. With this thermometer they not only let me wipe it across their foreheads, but they enjoy it and my older son asks to help. 2. If my children are sick when I have to go to work, their childcare provider can take their temperature throughout the day and I am automatically sent a notification on my phone with their temp so that I can keep track of their illness. Since it is so quick and easy to take their temps I can keep a log multiple times a day while they are sick to see if they are trending better or worse. I feel less nervous when they are sick because I am better able to monitor their illnesses.

Answer:	Unfortunately, no. You have the base which has a decent reach though (I’ve left it upstairs while the baby is downstairs) so it’s a standard BT range. I imagine if it had to connect to Internet then the battery on the base wouldn’t last as long as it does because of the power draw. I get at least a full 24 hour day from a full charge (I charge while my son bathes so I’ve never taken it to 0). Plus the base will alert you at 99.5F and 100.5F so you will want that nearby so you can hear it.

Answer:	No, not at all. It's a very simple setup actually - just the actual thermometer that communicates wirelessly with the 'base' unit which could be located inside the house. I also have found it to work very reliably!

Answer:	Peter, I finally took the opportunity to do an informal test of WS-14 's range. The greatest distance I was able to get to before the unit pool temp. display dropped out was between 140 and 150 feet. Ambient Weather's description of the unit's performance is accurate. The temp probe was just moved from the rain barrel, where it was being evaluated, to our small pond, where it will remain.
