Voltage Detection: Some electric outlet testers can also measure and display the voltage present at the outlet. This feature is handy for diagnosing voltage issues or verifying if an outlet is live.
GFCI and AFCI Testing: Some advanced outlet testers can check Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) and Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) outlets for proper functionality. These devices are crucial for protecting against electrical shocks and fires in certain locations.
Here's how an electric outlet tester typically works:
- The user plugs the tester into the electrical outlet they want to inspect.
- The tester's display or indicator lights provide information about the outlet's condition. Common indicators include lights for correct wiring, reversed wiring, open grounds, and more.
- The user can interpret the results based on the indicator lights or display readings.
Electric outlet testers come in various designs, from basic models with a few indicator lights to more advanced versions with digital displays and additional features. The choice of tester depends on the specific needs of the user and the complexity of the electrical system being tested.
In summary, electric outlet testers are essential tools for quickly and easily checking the safety and functionality of electrical outlets and receptacles. They help identify wiring issues, ensure proper grounding, and enhance electrical safety in homes and industrial settings.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this test through the wire insulation |
Answer: | Yes. You can tell if it is an energized cord/circuit. |
Question: | Why does my tester beep 6 times, flashes red then turns off |
Answer: | i never noticed mine beeping and flashing but it alway's shut's down unless you hold the power button down for a few second's. |
Question: | Hi what does a slow beep with a red light indicate it's not rapid. Thanks Tom |
Answer: | Klein non-contact sensors are known for being misleading, by blinking red and beeping even when there is no electrical current nearby. It does blink red and beep fast (and continuously) at 110v power and is pretty good for that. The slow blinks/beeps, even when touching wood or the edge of a kitchen counter, mean nothing. Some say it's due to very low voltage or 'phantom voltage' but this doesn't always seem to be the case. |
Question: | This pen tester make any sounds when it detects power |
Answer: | Yes it make a sound and flash red, but make sur than the tester is on green to be sure to test 120 volt because you have two options bleu for low voltage and green for 120 volts! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Btw amazon photo shows 2 pack logo! even though you only get one set |
Answer: | NO! It is, and the specs say, it is for 120vac. House wiring is 120vac. If you are wondering about 220vac, then you are probably thinking (giving you the latitude here, that you know about 220vac house service (which can be either 2 or 3 phase). Only one of those phases is used within the normal house receptacles. Even if you just look at the regular 3 prong plug between the two larger devices, you will see that is is the expected 120vac plug. A 220vac plug looks quite a lot different. Anyone trying to diagnose the (2 or 3) multi-phase service would typically just diagnose one phase at a time. So this *could* be used to troubleshoot 220vac - AS LONG AS you are just diagnosing *one phase at a time*. If you don't have clue as to what I have just spoken about then leave it alone! You are, in the least, going to waste your money, or burn out something, and at worst, possibly burn your house down. Get an electrician to help you out. |
Question: | Does anyone else have issues with the sensitivity of this unit? I can't pinpoint a breaker, just a range of at least 5-6 push it to max |
Answer: | Yes! Do this at your own risk, obviously. For some of the circuits in my house, the signal from the transmitter was too weak for the detector to pick it up through the breaker switch itself, but scanning the wires always worked. |
Question: | Will this work on220 volt |
Answer: | If you just need to test for continuity then you can put an rj45 jack on each end and tone one end and test the other you can see if you have continuity |
Question: | If you take the breaker plate off can you get a better indication on a specific wire going into a breaker |
Answer: | you will still have to connect the generator to the cable somewhere. since they are low voltage it should work. |

User questions & answers
Question: | The volt sensor is so sensitive it goes off near an outlet. Is that normal? I thought I could stick it in the slots to find out which side was hot |
Answer: | Yes, you can insert the tip of this tool into the slots of an outlet then press the button and it will tell you which side is hot. You can also use it to test the wires in a circuit if you are unsure which is the hot lead. If the wires are connected to the switch, outlet etc touch the tip to the bared wire at the contact point and it will tell you if it is hot. You can also just touch the insulation covering the wires to get a reading too. Try to keep the wires you are testing separted by a few inches if possible, this will help prevent any false reading you might get by voltage seepage from the insulated hot lead. If you didn't know - the hot wire in a circuit is usually black, red or maybe some other dark color, the white is the neutral or return and the green is the ground. Start by testing the dark wire first but as a precaution be sure the check the white also - someone may have wired in incorrectly and that could be a hot lead. I've had - well had, until I left it someplace - one of these for years and it's a good useful tool. So I gotta get another one now, and I'm getting one of these. |
Question: | Can this be used as a circuit breaker finder |
Answer: | You could use them to find a circuit breaker, if you had someone to watch the tester, while you went through your panel turning off and on your breakers untill you found the one that controlled that circuit. If you didn't want to do that then you will need to buy an circuit breaker finder kit. |
Question: | does this tester work on low-voltage landscape lighting wires |
Answer: | The non contact voltage tester will. |
Question: | can it tell the diffrence between 220v and 110v |
Answer: | If you can’t tell the difference 110v and 220v .You Dont Need A Meter. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the product bring the two items in the picture |
Answer: | Hi, you need to hold the black button down when you are next to the socket. You will get a continuous beep and flash from the unit. |
Question: | what batteries do these use |
Answer: | I’m going to guess that it is not. Because it is total junk |
Question: | How do i turn on the noncontact tester? i get a beep and flashing light when i press the button, but nothing when i put it near a good outlet |
Answer: | Yes. It has a strap with a round magnet that works very well to hold it. Of course, one needs a piece of steel nearby to stick it to. I have found the magnet most useful. Of special note is when I accidently left it on the roof of the car when trying to carry too much and open the door at the same time. Although I lost a folder of papers, the multi-tester was still there after 10 miles @ 45mph. |
Question: | is this made in USA |
Answer: | Should read “1” when turned to ohms. Touch leads together and should read “0.00” or nearly so (depending on how clean your leads are). Should read “000” when initially set to test voltage. Before concluding that your unit is defective, first check that your leads are firmly seated in their ports. If you still get no reading, and you are sure your battery is good, (check user’s guide for indicator icon), then maybe consider your unit is defective? |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the button trip a breaker if the plug is not gfci |
Answer: | Hello, Thanks for your inquiry. On the backside of the tester there should be a polarity indicator on the tester and on the inside of the battery compartment. |
Question: | does This have a light to let you know if it’s grounded correctly |
Answer: | The gfi is not working or the gfi is faulty to begin with. |
Question: | I've got one that looks just like this without a test button. what does the test button do |
Answer: | The unit only tests for the existance of 60Hz power on a particular wire Amps don't matter A 50 Amp plug is 240v It has 2 hot lines at 120v each and 1 neutral and 1 ground Sometimes neutral and ground are the same with only 3 blades on the plug Anyway, bringing the tester near the outlet will tell you if it's live it won't tell you if there is a problem like one hot line being out or low voltage on either leg You would need a multi-meter and some training to do anything else A good poor man's tester is an old fasioned lightbulb 60w across one hot leg and neutral then the other hot leg and neutral If the brightness is the same for both then you're good |
Product description
This indispensable household tester kit includes the most commonly used testers to test Voltage, GFCI receptacles, batteries, and USB ports. The voltage tester allows the user to verify the presence of AC voltage prior to working on an electrical installation or during troubleshooting without requiring physical contact with live electrical conductors. The included GFCI receptacle tester detects common wiring problems in standard and GFCI protected outlets. Simply plug it in and view the light pattern on the tester to determine if it's correct, open ground, open neutral, open hot, hot/gird reverse, or hot/net reverse. Tester works on 110-125 VAC receptacles only and will not indicate quality of ground. The battery tester tests common household battery types (AA, AAA, C, D, and 9V batteries) to determine existing charge. Finally, the USB tester can check USB ports for the presence of voltage and test for proper wiring and polarity. Simply plug it into a USB port and the indicator bulb will glow a certain color to tell you the condition of the USB port.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this determine if a lightbulb socket has power |
Answer: | It will always glow when the "hot" side is present. However, if you are missing the neutral to your lightbulb socket your lightbulb will not work, but the instrument will still glow, showing power is present. |
Question: | What does this one do better than a non-contact tester at 1/3 of the price |
Answer: | It has better build quality, and it's not made in China (to me that means it's less likely to contribute to my death or injury). |
Question: | is this better than the klien |
Answer: | I find the Fluke's build quality to be better than the Klein. If I drop the Klein, the tail cap falls off and the batteries fly out. I don't have that issue with the Fluke. Also the power button works better, my Klein's button is too sensitive. Also the Fluke I have (the 1AC model) will detect voltage in most tamper resistant receptacles without having to open the shutter, where my Klein will not (some user reported the Fluke is not sensitive but relatively my experience is the opposite). Finally, the Klein and the Southwire are made in China (although the Southwire at least has a LED flashlight built in). The Fluke is not made in China so it is easily worth twice the price to me. You can check out the Fluke and Southwire models at Lowes (and purchase there if you like one or the other). The Klein is often on sale at HD but I really recommend against it compared to the other two. |
Question: | What is the difference between fluke 2ac and fluke 1ac-a1-ii |
Answer: | The 2ac is the newer model with an "always on" function. It has a button that is used only to ensure that it still has battery power. The 1ac is the older one that can be turned on or off. They both test for voltage presence the same way, but the 1ac has an audible alert function which the 2ac does not have. |
