13 best bed exit alarms

Bed exit alarms are devices commonly used in healthcare settings to enhance patient safety, particularly for individuals who are at risk of falls or need close monitoring. These alarms are categorized under patient alarms and fall prevention equipment. Here is an overview of bed exit alarms:

  1. Purpose:

    • Bed exit alarms are designed to alert healthcare providers or caregivers when a patient attempts to leave their bed or chair without assistance. They are particularly crucial for patients who may be at risk of falling, such as the elderly, individuals with mobility impairments, or those recovering from surgery.
  2. Components:

    • Bed exit alarm systems typically consist of several components:
      • Sensor Pad or Sensor Mat: Placed on the patient's bed or chair, these pads detect changes in pressure when the patient tries to get up.
      • Alarm Monitor: The monitor is usually placed at the nurse's station or within close proximity to the patient's room. It receives signals from the sensor pad and emits an alarm when triggered.
      • Alarm Sound or Notification: When the sensor pad detects pressure changes, it sends a signal to the monitor, which can emit an audible alarm or send a notification to a healthcare provider's pager or mobile device.
  3. Types of Bed Exit Alarms:

    • Corded Alarms: These alarms use a cord that connects the sensor pad to the monitor. When the patient attempts to get up, the cord is stretched, triggering the alarm.
    • Wireless Alarms: Wireless systems use radio signals to communicate between the sensor pad and the monitor, eliminating the need for cords. They offer more flexibility in placement and reduce tripping hazards.
    • Voice Alarms: Some alarms use recorded voice messages to communicate the nature of the alarm, which can be particularly helpful in busy healthcare environments.
  4. Benefits:

    • Fall Prevention: Bed exit alarms are a crucial tool for fall prevention. They provide timely alerts, allowing caregivers to assist patients before they can fall.
    • Increased Patient Safety: These alarms enhance patient safety by reducing the risk of injuries from falls.
    • Peace of Mind: For caregivers and healthcare providers, bed exit alarms provide peace of mind by ensuring they are alerted when a patient requires assistance.
  5. Usage in Healthcare Settings:

    • Bed exit alarms are commonly used in hospitals, nursing homes, long-term care facilities, and home healthcare settings.
    • They are especially valuable for patients with cognitive impairments, those recovering from surgery, or individuals prone to wandering.
  6. Regulations and Standards:

    • The use of bed exit alarms may be subject to regulatory and safety standards in healthcare settings to ensure their proper functioning and effectiveness.

It's important to note that while bed exit alarms are valuable tools for fall prevention and patient safety, they are just one component of a comprehensive patient care plan. Healthcare providers should also consider other factors such as mobility assessments, medication management, and environmental modifications to reduce fall risks effectively.

User questions & answers

Question: Is there any way to turn this thing off? I only wanted to use it at night but can't figure out how to turn it off during the day
Answer: But adapter and unplug from base when not in use.
Question: How sensitive to movement is this pad? Does it sound the alarm if you roll over in bed, or only if you try to get up
Answer: The alarm does NOT sound when just rolling over. I've used this pad for my elderly mother and for my husband. The alarm sounds when there is no pressure, such as completely getting out of the bed. Besides, you can adjust the sensitivity. This has really been a lifesaver for me. Hope this helps.
Question: does the monitor have the alarm on it. Can I take the monitor down the hall and hear the alarm on the monitor when my grandma gets up
Answer: The pad is connected to the alarm. It has different volume settings and is really loud. I was able to hear it on the other side of the house when my grandma would get up.
Question: Do you sell the plug adaptor for this
Answer: We tried to order the plug adaptor. No one had it. If you partially pull out battery in morning, this will save the battery. In the beginning we had to change batteries daily. This product works great. We can hear it down the hall from my moms bedroom.

User questions & answers

Question: How thick is the pad? Is the pad firm or soft
Answer: The pad is not very thick and the sides are even thinner. It is is flexible but firm - it is kind of like the floor mat in your car. We had to remove the area rugs in our home because they were hard for my mom to maneuver around - she has no issues with this pad. Buying this pad was easily one of the best decisions I have made - I am able to sleep at night knowing that the alarm will sound if my mom tries to get up during the night.
Question: What size is the mat? The picture looks like a 3' x 6' mat
Answer: Mine measures 2’ x 4’ It fits perfectly under a bed when not in use. The mat has altered me when my 90 year old mother attempts to get out of bed without my help. My mom is a fall risk and the mat is the best purchase to help avoid any falls. I strongly recommend it.
Question: Would a cat set it off
Answer: No. I have two dogs and a cat and they have never set the alarm off. This Mat has only gone off with my mom stepping on it.
Question: Would a 10 lb. cat walking on this mat trigger the alarm
Answer: I'm sorry, I don't know. Quite possibly though, it is sensitive to pressure.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work for a 15,000 pound aircraft or does it have a max weight
Answer: The sensors are on a thin plastic film- An aircraft is too heavy
Question: do you have to change the battery every 14 days
Answer: I delivered the kit to my mother's rest home and they used it for several months. She doesn't try to get out of bed on her own anymore so they discontinued using it. I'm not sure how often they should change the batteries but I'm sure they used the unit for several months and did not change the batteries at all.
Question: the patients in only about 100 pounds, will it sense her when she gets up
Answer: Yes, definitely. It worked when my 45 pound six year old tried it out for us.
Question: Does this item have an adapter to plug directly into an electrical outlet
Answer: It's been 2 years since we used this, but I believe that it runs on batteries. The cord is to attach the pad to the alarm box, which I always put at the foot of the bed away from the pad. It worked best for us to be under the fitted sheet or under a waterproof pad in his chair. We have a large house, and we could hear the alarm from any room. It was very helpful in keeping my father-in-law safe.

User questions & answers

Question: Is there any way to extend the cord going to the alarm? Is there a possible extender cord
Answer: No doesn't look like it to me. My dogs got so distressed with the pitch of the alarm that I had to find another option.
Question: sorry, poor English. Is monitor a remote that can carry to through house and not be by bed
Answer: No. Monitor is connected to a pressure sensitive pad by means of a wired connection. I don't recall the length of the wire. Not over 6 feet to be sure. Pad can be placed on a bed or chair. When activated, an audible alarm sounds when there is no pressure on the pad. So, when a person gets up from bed or chair an alarm would sound. The alarm unit must be connected and in proximity to the pad. I tried this for use with my father. As he got older he suffered from a couple of calls resulting in minor injury. I bought the unit to alert when he was up and moving around. And it worked for a while. My father soon learned how to disconnect the monitor because he did not like someone coming everytime he got up. Alternatively, there are better but more expensive systems that are camera based and remote but do require some expertise to properly install. Hope this is helpful.
Question: The alarm doesn't always sound when my mother get's up. Is there a trick to it or do I need to make a return
Answer: If your mother's full body weight is removed from the sensor pad and the alarm is not sounding, there could be an issue with either the sensor pad or the alarm monitor. First make the sure the batteries are functioning by pressing the test/reset button on the side of the alarm monitor, and confirm that the alarm sounds briefly. If the alarm does not sound after testing please replace the batteries and check the system again. If you still have issues please contact us at 800-373-2873 to handle. Thank you for your business. -Personal Safety Corp.
Question: how long does the pad last 45? 90? a year
Answer: I purchased this about a year ago and it's still working fine.
