12 best geiger counters
A Geiger counter, also known as a Geiger-Muller counter, is a device used to detect and measure ionizing radiation. It is widely employed in various fields related to radiation protection, hazardous material handling, occupational health, safety products, and industrial scientific applications. Here's what you need to know about Geiger counters:
Radiation Detection: Geiger counters are primarily used to detect and measure ionizing radiation, which includes alpha particles, beta particles, gamma rays, and X-rays. These types of radiation have enough energy to ionize atoms or molecules they encounter.
Components: A typical Geiger counter consists of a gas-filled tube, which is often filled with a low-pressure inert gas like argon or neon. Inside the tube, there is a wire or anode and a cathode, which are maintained at a high voltage.
Operation: When ionizing radiation enters the tube, it can ionize the gas molecules, creating charged particles (ions). These ions are attracted to the electrodes, causing a brief electrical discharge or pulse. The Geiger counter detects and counts these pulses.
Audible Clicks or Ticks: Geiger counters often produce an audible clicking sound or tick for each detected ionizing event. The rate of clicks or ticks indicates the radiation level in the environment. Higher radiation levels result in more frequent clicks.
Display: Modern Geiger counters may have digital displays that provide numerical readings of radiation levels in units like counts per minute (CPM), microsieverts per hour (µSv/h), or millirems per hour (mR/h).
Applications:
- Radiation Safety: Geiger counters are used in nuclear power plants, research laboratories, and medical facilities to monitor and ensure safe radiation levels for workers and the public.
- Environmental Monitoring: They are employed to assess radiation levels in the environment, especially in areas affected by nuclear accidents or testing.
- Industrial and Hazardous Material Handling: Geiger counters can be used to check for radiation in materials, products, and cargo to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
- Emergency Response: In cases of radiological emergencies or accidents, Geiger counters help first responders assess the radiation threat and implement appropriate protective measures.
Limitations: Geiger counters have limitations, including their inability to distinguish between different types of radiation or provide energy-level information. They are most effective for detecting and quantifying radiation, but other detectors like scintillation detectors may be used for more specific applications.
Geiger counters are critical tools in maintaining safety and monitoring radiation exposure levels in various industries and situations where the presence of ionizing radiation is a concern. They provide valuable information for radiation protection and ensuring the well-being of workers and the public in potentially hazardous environments.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this measure the radiation level present in gemstones |
Answer: | Not all gemstones emit high enough levels of radiation that can be discerned above ambient levels of radiation and it depends on the actual level of radiation the stone emits. Stones that have been exposed to radiation to change their color will probably not register. I have some uranium marbles that are not detected by this counter. My wife was subjected to a PET scan, last year and read 790 CPM from a distance of 6 feet. |
Question: | can I use this to measure Fukushima radiation in seafood |
Answer: | I've read articles regarding radiation in seafood indicating the levels you read may be may be misleading. The GMC-300 will measure this radiation. Here in Northern Indiana the ambient level is normally 30 - 40 CPM. As shown in the video, levels in sea life can be higher. http://www.opb.org/news/article/scientists-say-stop-worrying-about-fukushima-radio/ Rick |
Question: | I'm a novice wanting to check for radiation levels. Is this device easy to understand? What can I use this for to measure for radiation |
Answer: | The GMC-300 is easy to use and low priced as an entry level radiation detector. I use mine to monitor background levels of radiation as I have yet to find an highly active source. Here in central BC, Canada I get 14 to 22 cpm, with a high of 30 cpm. It appears to decrease after a rain fall. The only thing missing with the GMC-300 is a radiation standard but I can understand why. |
Question: | Would this device be able to tell if there was leftover radiation from a nuclear blast or contamination? Or radiation from dirty bombs |
Answer: | I’m a radiation protection technician. If this device works the way that it says it does then it would still not detect alpha or neutron radiation. If you suspect something making into your food or water then I would be most concerned with Alpha particles and this doesn’t measure those. You shouldn’t have to worry about neutron radiation though and unless you’re using it to measure something you’re ingesting then alpha radiation really isn’t an issue. Geiger- Mueller counter can detect beta and gamma/X-ray radiation. I’d be interested to see how they measure Beta since you really need a gas chamber to measure it accurately. I would be most worried about beta and gamma radiation if you’re talking about an area that may have had nuclear weapons detonates years ago. This claims it can measure for those. If it can it would be a good device to determine if your surroundings are still giving off radiation. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why do they show it in use near hv transformers? does it also detect em emissions in that range |
Answer: | No, you would need and EMF (electromagnetic field) detector for that: https://www.amazon.com/Advanced-Electro-Magnetic-Detector-Monitor/dp/B007ZBETWC/ EM emissions are non-ionizing radiation, which means the particles do not have enough charge to cause damage to tissue. Geiger counters detect ionizing radiation, the dangerous kind: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, X-ray, etc. Illustration: https://quartarad.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/ionizing-radiation.jpg https://quartarad.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/types-of-radiation.gif I hope this clarifies matters a bit! |
Question: | Is this detector EMP proof |
Answer: | As a former designer of electronic circuits, I can opine with 99% certainty that it is NOT EMP proof. I say that because the outside is plastic (a non-shielding material), and the LCD screen also would not block radiation. I think to add EMP protection would raise the cost considerably! FYI, I store my detector, when not in use, inside a metal container (with other electronics) because of its vulnerability to EMPs. |
Question: | What is the difference between this model and the RD1503+ without dosimeter model |
Answer: | This model does have the dosimeter function (see "DOSE" on the LCD screen), which means that it can switch between immediate radiation levels ("NOW") and accumulated dosage over time ("DOSE").Very useful when working in environments with even slightly raised radiation levels (warehouses, junk yards, granite canyons, treatment plants, etc.) |
Question: | Can it detect all of "alpha", "beta", and "gamma |
Answer: | It detects beta, gamma and X-rays. No Alpha because it is redundant and unnecessary. Alpha particles are relatively "large" and won't pass even through a sheet of paper or a layer of skin, let alone plastic casing of a detector. It also emits only a few inches from source. Illustration: http://images.slideplayer.com/32/9849845/slides/slide_10.jpg One would need a special "pancake" appliance to detect it, and those cost up from $ 500. In my opinion, those are only useful for conducting experiments in a lab environment, or under some very specific circumstances. Another reason for not detecting Alpha: nearly every radioactive isotope that emits Alpha will also emit a lot more beta and/or gamma (usually both), which will be detected by the sensor. Hope this clarifies matter a bit. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How does the dosimeter work? Does it have to be turned on to track your dosage? Do you have to carry it at all times for a time period, like a week |
Answer: | Great question! Any kind of nuclear dosimeters, including SOEKS 112, have to be turned ON and on the person/in the environment in order to record the radiation dosage. It has to be carried around to accumulate the dose. SOEKS 112 can show real time radiation or the accumulated dose with a single press of a button. |
Question: | At what number on the display should I turn and run? Is this the same unit model sold by "Mirasafety |
Answer: | You should see numbers below 0.40 uSv/h in the USA for natural radiation background. It doesn't mean you have to run yet but definitely something to investigate as to why the numbers are higher than naturally should be. If you see numbers higher than 1 uSv/h - it's a good idea to increase your pace with the toes pointing away from the object or the area with high radiation. SOEKS is the original manufacturer of this portable Geiger counter, including the ones that are sold by Mira safety. It's always better to get our detectors directly from the manufacturer as we guarantee that they are stored properly and up to date with the latest updates. Regards, Andrew from SOEKS USA |
Question: | Will it or any software track history on iOS device |
Answer: | No, this is a standalone Geiger counter/Dosimeter that makes and keeps all the measurements on the meter itself. |
Question: | Why it's so slow? You can die before you see real radiation numbers |
Answer: | When High radiation is detected, you’ll know it right away - there will be a spike in the readings, the audio clicks will become very frequent, and the visual indicator (LED) will blink rapidly. No way to miss that! For subtle changes in the radiation background the maximum time for the most accurate readings takes only 2 minutes, usually less. 120 seconds is not enough time to get a lethal dose even during the Chernobyl disaster. And the best part, that this small Geiger counter (dosimeter) reads up to 999 mSv (999 Sv), while the Geiger counters initially used in Chernobyl only read up to 34 mSv, hence the delay for the alarm and the emergency response. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will it detect alpha, beta, and gamma at the same time |
Answer: | Yes. It detects alpha, beta, and gamma at the same time. |
Question: | Are these ansi n323 certified first accuracy |
Answer: | This unit is calibrated in GQ Electronics Lab, not others. It is a general-purpose Geiger Counter. |
Question: | will it detect radiation in water |
Answer: | If your looking to "see" the radon particles in the water probably won't notice much difference between the water and background radiation unless it was a significant amount... I would recommend putting the water in a glass or beaker and set the monitor on top to make readings... I may try that myself and see what results are if any.. |
Question: | Does this unit detect and mesure the radiation from a smoke detector |
Answer: | The GM tube of the GMC-600 Plus is a pancake one with a thin Mica Window. This allows also Alpha radiation to enter the GM tube and to detect it. A smoke detector can work with Am-241 isotopes and uses Alpha radiation for smoke detection. But all detetctors I know are very well shielded, so no Alpha radiation weill leave the smoke detector. Therefore, no external radiation detector will be able to detect the internal Alpha radiation of Am-241! Regards Uwe Z. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it have a seting in measurment from usv to u,milli rems hr |
Answer: | No |
Question: | How do I know if this device will tell me if there is harmful amounts of radiation in the environment after a Nuclear bomb has dropped |
Answer: | You need a radiation check source. Intact Smoke detectors don’t work well because it is a clean alpha particle source and is well shielded. You can get a slight reading above background if you place the counter back right on opened smoke detector. DO NOT take the detector apart, anyone asking this question does not know enough to do this safely! If you can find an old thorium lantern mantle, they work very well. Many new mantles do not use thorium anymore but the thorium mantles work a lot better so they are I demand. There are many sellers on eBay selling thorium mantles and as any Geiger counter can easily detect then, is hard to lie about this for long. 1930’s orange fiesta ware also works well if you can find sone (it used a uranium compound for color). You may be able to detect the radioactive material in an intact But you can also just buy a source. These can include uranium ore or Monazite sand. You can also find old radium watch dial hands for sale ( do not touch these, keep them in the bag). And there are always sealed samples sold for theses uses though they are often very expensive. You can find them on amazon occasionally, but more often on by eBay, and always at places like United Nuclear. I would recommend the thorium mantle route. If I can post a picture I will, but a piece of mantle in a plastic bag gives me 1.24uSv/hr in a background of 0.12uSv/hr. Using a smoke detector as source 0.19uSv/hr. Big difference. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this product detect radiation from food such as bananas |
Answer: | I haven't tried it yet. Nor have I tried Brazil nuts. But the device was very accurate when I passed over the hands of a watch painted with radium 226. My confidence in this device is very high. I would buy it again without hesitation. |
Question: | Can this read in pCi/L |
Answer: | It doesn't have to be a radon detector. The device appears to display only counts per minute and can convert radiation units into a "human effective dose" in mR or uS. However, typically it's software that performs unit conversions- so YOU "could" be the computer to convert cpm to pCi/L using using this detector- IF you have the prep supplies & a source that is the same radiation type (such as alpha) and the same dimensions (L-W-H) as what you would like to measure (if you wish to quantify pCi per air volume, the size of the source should match that of the air filter used to collect the sample- see more below). The known activity of your source can be in pCi or any other unit that can be converted to pCi, such as dpm). Measure the activity of the source using your GQ 600-GC (in cpm)... Divide the known activity of the source by the instrument measurement in cpm (you might improve your measurement by repeating this several times and taking the average after removing any statistical outliers). This gives you an efficiency for the type of activity you are measuring. The efficiency will be different for alpha than for beta & again differs for gamma.. etc so your known source must be the same radiation type even to estimate the activity. Here is an example of air sample radiation measurement using this device: The measured background level in the location where you plan to perform sample measurement is 50 cpm. If you are looking for alpha contamination, your source could be a circular shaped lamp mantle, 37 mm in diameter, quantified to contain a known quantity of 0.027 uCi of thorium (27000 pCi) at the time of measurement- this does not mean that all lamp mantles have this activity- you'd have to purchase or otherwise obtain a source with a known concentration at the time of measurement to perform any quantitative work with any detector. If the source measurement is 5050 cpm, the instrument's alpha efficiency is calculated as 27000/(5050-50 bkg) = 5.4 (take the average of several repeated measurements for bkg & source after removing statistical outliers for the most accurate efficiency). To collect an air sample, you could use a 37mm filter with a sample pump rate is 1.5 L/minute. If you performed the sampling for exactly 12 hours, your sample volume = 1.5L/m X 60m/1hr X 12hr = 1080 liters per sample You would then measure the background again (10 cpm again we hope) & then take a reading of your filter (again, an average of repeated measurements, removing statistical outliers, is a better indicator than a single measurement). If the filter activity is 60 cpm, your air activity =(60-50bkg cpm) X 5.4 eff= 54 pCi per filter divided by 1080 L volume =0.05 pCi/L . This is an example of this same measurement using a liquid sample and assuming the same measurements: If you have a 2 liter sample, you'd dry the sample under a heat lamp or on a hotplate- directly onto a 37mm planchette (this would be a slow process unless you used acid & other chemicals to keep radioactive material in solution so you could perform some of the volume reduction using a larger vessel first. Also, if there are solids on your planchette, your measurement will not be correct since solids can shield alpha activity and some beta). Assuming no solids, measure the planchette exactly as you did the filter above. If the planchette activity is (60 -50 bkg cpm) X 5.4 eff = 0.54 pCi / 2 liters = 0.27 pCi per liter. If you don't happen to own an air pump, standardized radioactive source, drying apparatus, & beakers, filters, etc. (even if you purchase a GQ 600-GC), you'd need to hire professionals to perform sampling & analytical measurement. In all seriousness, this is an interesting & cool toy- not relevant to exposure monitoring or quantifying material. |
Question: | If it has a plastic enclosure, how can it detect Alpha radiation |
Answer: | The picture is wrong. Check out the pictures here - https://www.amazon.com/GQ-GMC-600-Counter-Detector-Dosimeter/dp/B077V7QSHP/ It has a metal mesh for Alpha detection. |
Question: | If it doesn't distinguish between alpha, beta & gamma rays, when to be worried, since alpha, beta can be blocked more easily than gamma rays |
Answer: | The Alpha can be easily blocked by a sheet of paper. The Beta can be blocked by a block of aluminum. |
