13 best gas can safetys
Gas can safety is a crucial aspect of handling and storing flammable liquids to prevent accidents, fires, and injuries. Here are some important points related to gas can safety:
Proper Ventilation: When handling or storing gas cans, ensure proper ventilation in the area.Gasoline vapors are highly flammable and can accumulate in confined spaces, leading to an explosion risk.
Approved Containers: Always use approved containers for storing gasoline or other flammable liquids. These containers are designed to withstand the pressure changes that occur with temperature fluctuations and to prevent leaks.
Labeling: Gasoline containers should be clearly labeled to indicate their contents. This helps prevent accidental use for other purposes and minimizes the risk of confusion.
No Smoking: Smoking should be strictly prohibited in areas where gas cans are stored or used. The ignition source from a cigarette or open flame can lead to a catastrophic fire.
Static Electricity: Static electricity can ignite gasoline vapors. To prevent static buildup, use only approved containers with proper grounding and bonding techniques.
Childproofing: Store gas cans out of reach of children and pets. Childproofing measures, such as locking cabinets, can help prevent accidental access to dangerous chemicals.
Storage Location: Gas cans should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Do not store them inside living spaces.
Transportation: When transporting gas cans, secure them properly in your vehicle. Avoid overfilling the containers, as gasoline expands with temperature changes.
Pouring Safely: When pouring gasoline from a gas can, use a funnel to minimize spills and splashes. Do not pour gasoline near an open flame or spark-producing equipment.
Emergency Response: Have fire extinguishers and a spill containment kit nearby when working with gasoline. In case of a spill or fire, be prepared to respond quickly and safely.
Regular Inspection: Inspect gas cans regularly for signs of wear, damage, or leaks. Replace damaged cans immediately.
Dispose of Old Gasoline: Gasoline has a shelf life and can degrade over time. Properly dispose of old or contaminated gasoline at hazardous waste disposal sites.
Follow Local Regulations: Familiarize yourself with local regulations and codes regarding the storage and handling of flammable liquids. Compliance with these rules is essential for safety.
Training and Education: Ensure that anyone handling gas cans is trained in safe storage and handling procedures. This includes recognizing the hazards associated with gasoline and understanding proper safety protocols.
Gas can safety is of paramount importance to prevent accidents, fires, and injuries. By following these guidelines and using common sense, individuals can minimize the risks associated with handling and storing flammable liquids like gasoline.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the can marked (preferably by embossment) to indicate the "5 gallon" level |
Answer: | As far as I know there are no marks. The opening is tight so you really can't see inside anyway. There's a screen to prevent anything but gas from entering. I've never specifically measured but if you go to the gas station and put in exactly 5 gallons my guess is the gas will just reach the bottom of the screen which reaches down about 3 or 4 inches and that can be your mark |
Question: | Where is this made |
Answer: | All Justrite safety cans are produced in our Mattoon, Illinois manufacturing facility. |
Question: | Is the 1" nozzle too large to dispense gasoline directly into an automobile? Or is it sized only to fit the larger opening on diesel cars/trucks |
Answer: | A standard unleaded gasoline nozzle is only 13/16". If the spout is anywhere near 1 inch, it will NOT fit into the hole to open the flapper. |
Question: | Does this can self vent when not pouring? I am looking for a gas can that can handle changes in altitude. It is hard to find 100% gas where I need it |
Answer: | This can has a sealed lid with automatic positive-pressure relief that vents between 3 and 5 psig (0.2 and 0.35 bar) to protect against explosion. |

Question: | What is the diameter of the funnel discharge? Will it fit into a standard vehilcle fuel filler opening |
Answer: | with the included detachable funnel it will be fine. place the funnel in the fuel filler on your vehicle then pull the handle to fill and release to stop.. |
Question: | has anyone used this in California - how does the rubber seal on the gas nozzle seal on the can? I am not able to get a good seal and therefore the p |
Answer: | You’re exactly right. This can’t be used in California’s because of the mandated rubber boot. The boot is supposed to prevent gas vapors from escaping into the environment. A seal must be formed or the gas pump won’t start. This can’s lid prevents the rubber boot from even coming close to the can’s opening, so a seal can’t be formed. |
Question: | Can I use it for kerosene |
Answer: | Yes you can use it for kerosene. We do ask that you label it with what you are putting inside. The blue cans "represents" kerosene. Red- means gasoline, yellow means diesel. |
Question: | I couldn't get the pump to pump gas into the can. any ideas? ps: if you don't have an answer, please do not respond |
Answer: | ok. we bought one too.. it was a pain at first but husband remedied problem... ok so first remove only funnel from can. next just squeezeyellow plastic handle toward red metal stationary handle and turn on gas pump.... any prob call 727 584 6722 |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the mechanism like that opens the Eagle UI-50 safety can for filling / pouring? (Cannot tell from the pic or description |
Answer: | You can see a better picture here...http://www.toolfetch.com/type-i-safety-cans-ui-50fseg.shtml?gclid=CJ6w2Lab3rMCFexAMgod1VUAGwUse the mouse-over zoom feature. The teapot analogy is spot-on. The top is HEAVY spring loaded to close. Pulling the top's handle to the can's handle opens the spout. Much like a lawnmower safety lever. They must be engaged with each other to open the lid.I got sick of my plastic can's o-rings leaking all the time, and this solved that issue. The only CON - is you must remove the funnel every time you fill the can. |
Question: | Has anyone else had an issue with gas "flying" out of can when opening after carrying it? It seems to pressurize, and when you pull on handle, look ou |
Answer: | Mine presurizes too. When the pressure equalizes when you open it, you can hear it. However, I am not concerned becuase it has a flame arrestor on it and no fuel spits out. |
Question: | With the funnel attached, I dont have much ability to tilt the can up very high, so I can only pour ~1/2 of the volume into my car tank. Help! Thanks |
Answer: | You can do it: once it's as empty as you can get it with the conventional pouring angle, SLOWLY rotate the can without removing the funnel from your car's gas tank. It will reposition the can and the rest of the gas will flow out. You just slowly rotate it 180 degrees (in a circular motion looking from the sky down...like clockwise). I don't know if that is how it's designed but it works. |
Question: | Does the Eagle UI-50 safety can funnel snap on and off easily to facilitate storage, or is it intended to stay in place |
Answer: | The safety funnel pops off relatively easily for storage. It is a touch more snug at first use, but after putting it on and taking it off several times it becomes a bit smoother. Once you do it one or two times you will get the hang of it. |

Answer: | That I don’t know. Amazon deliver to me in two days. |
Question: | How do you fill it |
Answer: | The fill opening is right above where the spout connects to the can. The cap to the fill opening is spring loaded and very stiff to open. There is a steel mesh filter just inside the opening to catch any foreign debris. |
Question: | Description says blue but should be red.....what do you get |
Answer: | The 7225130 is the part number for the red safety can. If you would like this in blue please order the part number 7225330. This must be a description error. I apologize we are in the process of trying to clean up as much of these description error's as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused in your product selection. |
Question: | is this item easy to use |
Answer: | It is very easy to use and our spring did not seem too stiff, I opened it without any issue. It is expensive, but it doesn't seem to spill gas like any of the other 7 cans we have. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there any way to keep the self-closing lid open while you're filling the can from a larger container that requires two hands to hold and pour |
Answer: | Good question. I open the self closing lid and then place the filler nozzle in to keep the self closing lid open. It’s a little ouchward if the filling can is full. |
Question: | Is a guarantee on these cans ? I bought one less then a year ago and it is leaking on the bottom already |
Answer: | I believe they have a 10 Year warranty. |
Question: | Is it made in chine |
Answer: | The can is made in the USA. I own 3, this one for 2 Cycle mix, Yellow for Diesel, Red for Gas. All are sturdy and well made. You will not be disappointed. My wife was skeptical, but after they arrived and she used them, she asked "Why didn't we get these sooner?". Need I say more? |
Question: | Justrite makes both 5/8" and 1" diameter flexible hoses. What diameter hose does this can have |
Answer: | Mine came with the 5/8 hose and that's what's listed for this part number. I have a 5 gal can with the 1" hose and like the 5/8" better for all my lawn and yard equipment. I am thinking abut switching out the larger one on the bigger can. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the green one for |
Answer: | The green can is for flammable chemicals and liquids - red for gasoline specific - and yellow for diesel specific. |
Question: | Can you store this in a shed which is about 130 degree farenheit is the summer |
Answer: | Thank you for your interest in our product. This can has a spring loaded cap that will release vapors so that it can be stored in high temperatures. |
Question: | Why does the 2 gal can cost more than the 5 gal can? I have a < .20 acre lawn. A 2 gal can and 1 gal can for 2 cycle are ideal for me. Want metal |
Answer: | Our 2 gal gas cans are cheaper. They are $38.50 free shipping where the 5 gallon are $40.90 free shipping. |
Question: | How hard is it to remove the yellow funnel (to fill the can)? Does it just pull on and off? Is it threaded |
Answer: | First time it was tough to get the yellow funnel on, but after removing it and putting it back on a few times it goes on and off pretty easily. The yellow funnel is not threaded You really need to have the handle all the way retracted as far as it will go to put the yellow funnel on and off. The return spring on the lid is very heavy duty so you need to really pull on that handle to get it all the way back. |

User questions & answers
Question: | my understanding is you can't use galvanized steel with diesel, is the can galvanized inside |
Answer: | The sulfur in the diesel reacts with the zinc in the galvanization, and the two go into a suspension in the fluid, which then builds up on many critical engine components, like fuel pumps, injectors, etc. These two have also been found to combine into zinc sulphate, which is sorta like a gel, and gums everything up, blocking the flow of fuel. Diesel should never be stored in a galvanized steel container, consult your equipment manufacturer, I’ll bet they agree. |
Question: | Is the handle metal or plastic |
Answer: | Plastic fill handle, metal can handle.. it's built cheaper than the justrite can for the same money. |
Question: | Can this can be used to store regular fuel, not just diesel? (I bought it without realizing it is marked for diesel |
Answer: | Yes, it can be used to store gasoline. We suggest that you mark the safety can with what is inside. All of our cans are made the same, but they are available in a variety of colors for the safe handling and storage of kerosene (blue), diesel (yellow), gasoline (red) and combustible liquids such as oils (green) |
Question: | Anyone else having trouble getting the Eagle F-15 funnel to fit this can |
Answer: | The trick is to open the can with the plastic handle UNDER the metal handle. It's the only way to get the lid high enough to get the funnel on. Not to hard once you get used to it. |

Question: | The can in the picture says "MADE IN THE USA |
Answer: | They've been in business since 1906 and I purchased two cans from them last year and they are great. Both cans have the "Made in the USA" insignia on them. Because they are metal cans to prevent the cans from rusting on my garage floor I built a pressure treated shelf with 2x4 pressure treated legs for them to sit on. http://justritemfg.com/utility-pages/about-us1/ |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a gas water heater in my garage and no shed to store gas. The garage is only 20' long. Can I safely store gas in this can in the garage |
Answer: | The truth is I don't know the correct, technical answer to this questions. Having said that, I hope it's OK because I store two of these cans in my 2-car, attached garage. The garage is attached and walled but not insulated, and in a shaded area, so temps vary from ~40F to ~80F. If it helps you, I never smell gas vapor or fumes, regardless of how long, how full, or how hot/cold. |
Question: | Would this be easy to use to fill a top-filling motorcycle tank |
Answer: | Although I haven't filled a motorcycle with mine, I think it would be easier than the cheap plastic cans. You should be able to insert the hose, then tilt the can, then open the valve. Reverse the order to shut off flow. No spillage. |
Question: | How is the fill cap opened in order to fill this can? IE, will it sta yopen or does it have to be held open to overcome the spring |
Answer: | has to be held open against spring with same handle you pick up the can with and pour with. You don't have to screw around trying to do two things at once. Good design and sturdy can. Will take a beating. |
Question: | What are the differences between U1 and U2, Type 1 and Type 2 classifications |
Answer: | Type I safety cans only have 1 opening - pour & fill from the same opening. Type II safety cans have 2 openings - one for pouring and one for filling - the fill opening serves as a vent when pouring. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this can vent through the spout like the newer cans do |
Answer: | The vent is between the handle and fill cap and is opened when you pull the valve handle to allow the fuel to flow. I have three of these for two years and have had no issues. Sure beats all the plastic cans. |
Question: | Kerosene work ok with this |
Answer: | Kerosene is a blue can |
Question: | Is the 1" nozzle too large to dispense gasoline directly into an automobile? Or is it sized only to fit the larger opening on diesel cars/trucks |
Answer: | I have red containers for my gasoline users that also have 1" nozzles. They work great for my vehicles that use gasoline. They also work for my lawn mowers. |
Question: | Can this 5 gallon can be used with diesel fuel |
Answer: | Yes, but not for long term storage. Diesel fuel dissolves the zinc on Galvanized metal, and thus the zinc will clog your fuel injectors. |
