10 best buffing wheel for wood
Buffing wheels for wood are abrasive finishing accessories used in woodworking and other applications to achieve a smooth and polished surface on wooden workpieces. These wheels are a valuable tool for adding a glossy finish and enhancing the overall appearance of wood projects. Here's what you need to know about buffing wheels for wood:
Functionality: Buffing wheels for wood are typically made of various materials, including cotton, felt, or sisal, and they are designed to attach to a buffing machine or bench grinder. These wheels rotate at high speeds and, when combined with polishing compounds, help remove imperfections and provide a polished finish to wooden surfaces.
Finishing Process: To use a buffing wheel for wood, you'll first apply a polishing compound, which may be wax-based or abrasive, to the surface of the wheel. As the wheel spins, it distributes the compound onto the wood's surface while simultaneously buffing it to a smooth, glossy finish.
Types of Buffing Wheels: There are different types of buffing wheels designed for various stages of the finishing process. Common types include:
Cotton Wheels: These are soft and are typically used for the final polishing stage to achieve a high-gloss finish on wood.
Felt Wheels: Felt wheels are suitable for intermediate stages of polishing and are often used to remove minor imperfections and scratches.
Sisal Wheels: Sisal wheels are more abrasive and are used for initial rough polishing and material removal, especially for harder woods.
Polishing Compounds: Polishing compounds come in various types and grits, and they are essential for achieving the desired finish. Some compounds are designed to remove scratches and imperfections, while others are used for the final high-gloss polish.
Safety Precautions: When working with buffing wheels for wood, safety precautions are crucial. Always wear safety goggles and gloves to protect against flying debris and abrasive particles. Additionally, ensure that the wood piece is securely held in place to prevent accidents.
Variable Speed Buffing Machines: Some buffing machines have variable speed settings, allowing you to adjust the rotation speed of the buffing wheel. This feature can be useful for achieving different levels of finish and for working with various wood types.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance of the buffing wheel and polishing compounds is essential to maintain their effectiveness. Clean the wheel periodically and replace it when it becomes worn or damaged.
Applications: Buffing wheels for wood are commonly used in woodworking, cabinetry, and furniture making to create a smooth and polished finish on wooden surfaces. They can also be used for restoring the shine on existing wooden items.
In summary, buffing wheels for wood are indispensable tools for achieving a polished and glossy finish on wooden workpieces. When used in conjunction with appropriate polishing compounds and safety precautions, they can enhance the appearance of wood projects and create a smooth, professional finish.Different types of buffing wheels and compounds are available to suit various stages of the finishing process and the specific needs of the woodworker.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this food safe |
Answer: | If your asking about the wax, yes BUT you don’t want this finish for food as it is not durable!! Wax is not what you want for food bowls |
Question: | I sometimes use walnut oil and beeswax to maintain food safeness, will using Tripoli bar, White diamond bar, Carnauba wax bar negate food safeness |
Answer: | I think it would be safe but not sure about Tripoli or white diamond. I do know carnuba wax is food safe it is used in many food products including M&Ms. It is the coating that makes them melt in your mouth and not your hand. |
Question: | What's required to use this on a variable speed bench grinder |
Answer: | The buffing system pictured is designed to work on a lather (installed between centers using the built in morse taper...). If you're looking for a system to use with a variable speed bench grinder purchase the kit sold by PSI or Beal for that purpose. I have one that I purchased from PSI that will screw on to a grinder if it has a 1" X 8" adapter. Nice system and I'm very pleased with both PSI products (lathe and grinder buffing systems). |
Question: | There’s a last of directions. How is it set up? Where does the third nut get placed |
Answer: | you would place the 3rd nut nest to the 2nd one tighten 2nd one and the run the 3rd one up to the 2nd one as a lock nut to ensure the 2nd does not run off (loosen) |

Give your next small project a spectacular finish quickly and easily with this set of three 8" diameter buffs, compounds, and a quick-change adapter. Give your next small project a spectacular finish quickly and easily with this set of three 8" diameter buffs, compounds and a quick-change adapter. Whether youre polishing an oil finish on a box, buffing the scratches out of a turned bowl or platter, or finishing pen blanks, this system will leave a glass smooth surface on whatever you hold to it. The secret to the system is that the dozens of soft cloth layers apply compound evenly without rounding over sharp features and edges. The wheel actually splays out slightly to conform to the shape being buffed. The all-flannel tripoli buff will level out the finish and remove any scratches. The flannel/cotton mix white diamond buff takes out any remaining small scratches and begins to polish. The all-cotton carnauba wax buff yields a high gloss polish similar to a lacquer finish. Changing buffs takes seconds with the quick-change adapter. It adjusts to fit 1/2" or 5/8" motor arbor shafts (1/2 HP or larger, 1725 RPM motor recommended). The optional #2 Morse taper mandrel enables you to use the buffs on the lathe (youll have to make a 1/4"-20 drawbar to hold it in place)The compounds will last for years when used moderately. Not for use in a hand-held drill. System includes: 3 buffs, quick-change adapter, 3 compounds and complete instructions.

User questions & answers
Question: | can it be used with a shopsmith mk |
Answer: | Yes, it works great on my Shopsmith. |
Question: | Does this include the mandrel for 3 wheels |
Answer: | It doesn’t contain the mandrel to mount all 3 wheels simultaneously. But to be honest I’d find that awkward for most of my projects. It takes seconds to change from one wheel to the next. |
Question: | Does this system require any adapters to fit into the lathe |
Answer: | as long as your lathe has a 1/2 or 5/8" arbor, it will screw directly into it. I have a 4 jaw chuck that I use to hold the shaft and that works pretty well. The short answer then is no, you don't need any adapters. |
Question: | can it be used to buff aluminum |
Answer: | You can buff anything you want. Keep in mind - linen buffers and the system is designed to be lathe-mounted. When you think about "normal" buffing you bring the buffer in contact with the piece that is being buffed. In this setup you bring the piece to the buffer. If the question is about the substances used to dress the wheels (white diamond, carnuba wax) I can't answer that as I use the setup for wood-turning. But if you can buff aluminum with another substance, I see no reason why you couldn't dress these buffers with it. |
