They close well, but since they are fabric and cardboard, it is not the same heft as say a wooden drawer, so a determined toddler could probably still get in. For example, the "door," there is no way for it to "lock," so it could be pulled past the wedge-shaped side as shown in the image. I use mine for toy storage though, so it works out very well, and not dangerous edges for baby to really get hurt on. I really like them.

Question:	Where can i find the instructions
Answer:	5 inches. They are sort of loose though, so you can angle them a bit if need be.
Question:	Does it have an awful plastic smell to it? I bought a smaller one from a store and could not use it. Could not get the smell out either
Answer:	For me, this was the best product for the money, I've bought in years. Seriously, I was so surprised at it's quality. I believe the shelves would sag a little, if something flat and heavy is placed on them. I use it for clothing, towels, sheets, and other soft and bendable items, so it has worked out great.
Question:	Has anyone tried getting a thin piece of hard plastic cut to fit the shelve bottoms to easy sliding and to keep from sagging
Answer:	The two hooks are independent of the bar that attaches them- you can choose to swivel tje hooks to the direction you want. Once you hang it though you cannot swivel the entire unit. I hope that makes sense and answers your question.

Question:	how do I attach the rod with the hooks to the shelves part ? they have come separate and I do not understand how to attach them. Thanks in advance
Answer:	I am pretty sure there are no actual instructions. You slip the plastic floors of the drawers into the narrow slits at the bottom of the drawers. This stabilizes them. We have the configuration with the open shelves at the top and bottom. We find the balance works best that way.

Answer:	No awful plastic smell to mine
Question:	Does it have mesh pockets on both sides
Answer:	I think the drawers can be placed at different levels, so you may not need to worry about sagging on the bottom—just put a drawer there.
Question:	Are the side pockets only on one side
Answer:	I never saw the hanging shelves. This was purchased as a Christmas gift
