Either 20" or 16" should work for you as long as they're properly anchored.

Answer:	I haven't tried getting the shelves wet. But they are not "real" wood, probably pressed sawdust. So I wouldn't put them some place where they would get wet or use outdoors. This being said, they are attractive and quite sturdy.

Answer:	We also tried to use studs when possible but it didn’t always work since we needed them at a certain spot. They come with hardware and I used the screws but got a better drywall anchor from the hardware store. I wouldn’t suggest using the anchor that comes with it. It is very sturdy!!

Answer:	We were disappointed in these. I don’t think it kept food warm more than an hour. I started putting hot water in the container to warm it up before putting hot food into, which helped, but the food was still cold by lunchtime. And the preheating warped the container. I do not recommend this product.
