11 best network switchs
Network switches are fundamental devices in computer networking that play a crucial role in directing data traffic efficiently within a local area network (LAN). Here's what you need to know about network switches:
Function: Network switches operate at Layer 2 (Data Link Layer) and sometimes at Layer 3 (Network Layer) of the OSI model. They are responsible for forwarding data frames between devices within the same network, using MAC (Media Access Control) addresses.
Ports: A network switch typically has multiple ports, where each port can connect to a device such as a computer, printer, server, or another switch. These ports can vary in speed (e.g., 1 Gigabit, 10 Gigabit, 100 Gigabit) and connectivity type (e.g., Ethernet, fiber-optic).
Packet Forwarding: Unlike network hubs, which broadcast data to all connected devices, switches intelligently forward data only to the specific device that needs it.This reduces network congestion and enhances overall network performance.
Managed vs. Unmanaged: Network switches come in two main categories: managed and unmanaged. Unmanaged switches are plug-and-play devices with no configuration options, while managed switches offer greater control over network traffic and can be configured for specific purposes.
VLAN Support: Managed switches often support Virtual LANs (VLANs), which allow network administrators to segment a single physical network into multiple logical networks. VLANs enhance security and manageability by isolating traffic.
Quality of Service (QoS): Managed switches may support QoS settings, which prioritize certain types of traffic (e.g., voice or video) to ensure consistent performance for critical applications.
Port Mirroring: This feature allows network administrators to duplicate traffic from one port to another for monitoring and analysis purposes, such as network troubleshooting or security monitoring.
Redundancy: In enterprise networks, redundancy is crucial for ensuring network availability. Some switches support features like Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) to prevent network loops and ensure network uptime.
Power over Ethernet (PoE): PoE switches can provide power to connected devices like IP cameras, phones, or access points over the Ethernet cable, simplifying installation and reducing the need for separate power sources.
Rack-Mountable: Many network switches are designed to be mounted in standard server racks, making them suitable for data centers and enterprise environments.
Security Features: Some switches offer security features such as Access Control Lists (ACLs), which allow administrators to control which devices can communicate with each other on the network.
Energy Efficiency: Energy-efficient switches are designed to reduce power consumption during periods of low network activity, contributing to cost savings and environmental sustainability.
In summary, network switches are essential networking devices used to connect and manage the flow of data between devices in a local area network. They come in various types and configurations, with managed switches offering advanced features for larger and more complex networks, while unmanaged switches are simpler and easier to set up for smaller environments.

User questions & answers
Question: | What port would you plug the lan cable coming from the router into on the 24 port gigaswitch |
Answer: | It should work fine. Keep in mind this is a gigabit switch and cat8 would more typically be used for 10gb networking but its all compatible. |
Question: | Is this model wall-mountable? Does it have the little "screw-guides" to hang it on the wall |
Answer: | Your configuration should look like this: (Internet) Cable -> ARRIS TG1672G -> Port 1, 2, 3, or 4 -> Netgear 8-Port Switch Your Cable Modem provides 4 Gigabit Ethernet Ports and when you connect the Netgear 8-Port switch you lose 2 ports (one on the cable modem & one on the Netgear and end up with 10 Gigabit Ethernet Ports instead of 4. No configuration is needed. If one of the devices you're adding is a Wi-Fi router, then your configuration will look like this: (Internet) Cable -> ARRIS TG1672G -> Port 1 -> Wi-Fi Router -> Netgear 8-Port Switch. If you want all devices to be able to see each other, then you can have up to 7 of them plugged into the Netgear Router. |
Question: | what is the difference between the smart switch and the unmanaged switch |
Answer: | No. It's top speed is Gigabit (1000 Mbps), but it will work with 10/100 Mbps devices well. It's not just limited to Internet but any devices that wish to communicate with each other i.e. computer to Network Attached Storage (NAS) device, etc ... and usually those devices have gigabit Ethernet ports so they can communicate with each other at the gigabit speeds. |
Question: | Does this have a web GUI or do I have to use the TP-Link software for configuration |
Answer: | Make your flow as follows: Modem -> Wi-Fi Router -> Netgear 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch. All your devices (up to 15 of them) will get their IP address from the Wi-Fi Router. You may also want to consider labeling your cables. I have two 16-port switches, one Unmanaged (for Internet) and one Managed (for private network), and all the cables are both color-coded and labeled. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I am using cat 8 cables. Will this product work? If not what other switch do i need |
Answer: | I think it sounds most like an MI Audio crunch distortion, which it is supposedly a clone of. The Crunch Distortion is supposedly based on the Rat. I've never played a rat, so I don't want to make the comparison. I will say for like $30 the joyo sounds really good, and after about six months of playing its had no issues. hope I helped a little |
Question: | Should this connect to arris tg1672g without any configuration on either side? the arris combines "..a 4-port gigabit router.." not working for me |
Answer: | Mono output , and why wud u use headphones??? |
Question: | Do i have to have 1gig internet speed to have this or no |
Answer: | Yes, i have used it for bassPretty cool, very agressive ...noisyBut if you dig that for bass it will work.If you're into gutter punk its perfect |
Question: | how to get plug and play to work? 14 ports not putting out IP, have modem and wifi router connected, but cant get other ports to work |
Answer: | Go for it. My son uses one with a small Crate ss practice amp, and it sounds phenomenal. He has to keep the volume on the pedal very low though - set above 9 o'clock it was not pleasant. Set around 8 o'clock sounded great. I tried it through a JC-120 and I thought it sounded as good as my George Dennis Wizard Rock, which is normally my favorite distortion pedal for JC. But again, finding the sweet spot in the pedal's output level was important. |

Question: | Does it support international voltage range? (120v to 240v |
Answer: | I wear a ladies 8 shoe. I bought small because my feet are real skinny. I would think a medium for you |
Question: | does the all the ports works or just one at the time |
Answer: | I don't wear anything binding on the ball and toe area of my feet. I wear a size 7 women's shoe and ordered a size large. They were not long enough and pulled on my toes, leaving me with sore feet at the end of the day. Gave them away to someone without foot issues. Should have gotten X Large. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many are full POE ports |
Answer: | I don't have this switch, but according to the description 24 of the ports are POE, but you need to make sure the power supply in the switch will support that also. |
Question: | Vlan support for untagged ports that are not on default vlan |
Answer: | It seems crazy that they would not support untagging ports to vlans other that the default vlan1. Have you ran into switches that do not support this? Seems safe enough to order then, test immediately then return if you can't make it work. How about a call to their tech support or pre-sales support. |
Question: | does it have dhcp configuration capability |
Answer: | No. It does not. |
Question: | Is it safe to use this for non poe devices |
Answer: | Yes. It detects if the device is POE. If not, it functions like a normal switch. |
