13 best horse wound care
Horse wound care is essential for maintaining the health and well-being of horses. Proper wound care helps prevent infections, speeds up the healing process, and reduces the risk of complications. Here are some key points to consider when it comes to horse wound care:
Assessment and Cleaning:
- Begin by assessing the wound's size, depth, and location. Ensure the horse is calm and under control before approaching the wound.
- Wear gloves to prevent contamination.
- Clean the wound gently with a mild antiseptic solution or sterile saline solution to remove dirt and debris. Avoid using harsh chemicals or alcohol, as they can further damage tissues.
Control Bleeding:
- Apply gentle pressure with a clean, sterile cloth or bandage to control bleeding.
- If the bleeding is severe, consider using a pressure bandage or tourniquet as a temporary measure. However, do this only if you are experienced, as improper use can cause more harm.
Dressings and Bandaging:
- Choose appropriate dressings and bandages based on the wound's type and location. Consult with a veterinarian if you're unsure.
- Apply an antimicrobial ointment to the wound before applying a sterile dressing.
- Use clean, non-stick bandages and secure them in place with bandage tape or wrap. Be careful not to wrap too tightly to avoid cutting off circulation.
Keep the Wound Clean:
- Change dressings and clean the wound daily or as advised by a veterinarian.
- Monitor for signs of infection, such as increased swelling, heat, pus discharge, or a foul odor.
Prevent Movement and Irritation:
- Minimize the horse's movement and activity to prevent the wound from reopening or becoming irritated.
- Consider using a protective neck cradle or neck sweats to discourage the horse from biting or scratching the wound.
Seek Veterinary Advice:
- Consult a veterinarian for serious wounds, punctures, or wounds near joints, eyes, or vital structures.
- Discuss tetanus vaccination and any other necessary treatments with the veterinarian.
Pain Management:
- Monitor the horse for signs of pain and discomfort.
- Your veterinarian may prescribe pain-relief medication if necessary.
Healing and Scar Management:
- Follow your veterinarian's recommendations for wound care until the wound has healed.
- Once healed, consider scar management techniques such as topical creams or silicone sheets to minimize scarring.
Preventative Measures:
- Maintain good hygiene in the horse's living environment to reduce the risk of injuries.
- Regularly inspect fences, stables, and equipment to identify and repair potential hazards.
Remember that horse wound care should always be conducted with the horse's safety and comfort in mind. Consulting with a veterinarian is crucial for serious wounds or if you have any concerns about the healing process. Proper wound care helps ensure the horse's rapid recovery and reduces the likelihood of complications.

User questions & answers
Question: | How does it work in horses |
Answer: | It is not officially rated for any human use but I have heard from customers who use it themselves without issues. We do not make a claim that this item is safe for humans, but anecdotal information says it may be helpful. |
Question: | What is the difference between the Equine and the All Animal ingredients |
Answer: | Hi there! We are sorry to hear your pup is dealing with this skin irritation. Silver Honey should be a good option for treatment. Silver Honey is made with natural ingredients, and small ingested amounts will not hurt your pup. We'd love to hear about the results if you're willing to send those over to [email protected], attn Marj. Please give your Boxer a pat from all of us! -- Absorbine |
Question: | Does it treat ear infections? (Yeast |
Answer: | Yes, Silver Honey can safely be used on all animals, including chickens. Side note: one of our team members used it on his own chicken's wound. Not only did the wound heal, but the feathers started to grow back in the healed area. Thank you for your interest in our product! |

Question: | Has anyone used this product on humans? .. similar to http://www.amazon.com/Biolife-LLC-WoundSeal-Powder-ea/dp/B006FZ5IQK/ref=pd_sbs_petsupplies_2?ie=U |
Answer: | Yes, mini donkeys can take in this product :) |
Question: | Would this be good for use on goats after disbudding |
Answer: | 5% sugar in the Apple Bite-Size Nuggets. |
Question: | How do you apli it to horses |
Answer: | I used this on my horse, it is just a cream you rub on, worked great, wouldn't see why you couldn't use it on your dog. There isn't a warning about it on the label. |
Question: | Can this be used with cats |
Answer: | I did not use it for that. I used it for sores and was still able to ride and tighten cinch. I had to apply it like it says but some Dutch people I know recommended it and they use horses for work and if collar rubbed em they apply and keep using em. It did not make the sore bigger or irritate the horse and it did dry it up. It was well worth the price cause I use my horses for trail rides at the stables and nothing else worked. I can't imagin it working on proud flesh honestly. It's just a salve but did dry up the sore over time |

Question: | How much should i apply |
Answer: | Yes. I used it on a henpecked Banty who had no skin left on the her skull and the back of her neck. She has fully recovered and even has feathers fully grown in except for one bald spot. |
Question: | Is this stuff like colloidal silver in gel form |
Answer: | Underwood Horse Medicine Instructions: Apply Underwood Horse Medicine onto the wound and lightly dust with BAKING POWDER Baking powder acts as an invisible bandage keeping the medicine inside the wound and corruption and infection out. Each application adds another layer of protection to the wound acting like a scab. Never flush or wash the wound Flushing or washing a wound while using Underwood Horse Medicine is counter productive to the healing process because you are washing any pre-existing medicine out of the wound and causing further irriation. Moisture also plays a key role in proud flesh formation. Never wrap the wound while using Underwood Horse Medicine Wrapping the wound does not allow fresh air access to the wound and becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and proud flesh development. Apply twice daily We suggest applying the medicine as many times daily as possible to expedite the healing process. (twice minimum) Keep out of morning dew Any moisture that collects on the baking powder formation will have adverse effects on the healing process. Keep the wound as dry as possible. Do not pack the baking powder into the wound, it only requires a light dusting When the baking powder dries on the wound it forms cracks that allow our medicine to seep into the wound, if you have packed the wound with baking powder these cracks will not form. |
Question: | Will the gel stain my home walls or any fabric |
Answer: | There is no expiration date. This stuff works amazing! |
Question: | How ofter should i be changing the dressing or reapplying the gel |
Answer: | Thymol, Menthol, aromatic essential oils, chloroxylenol, copper sulfate, pentahydrate, wormwood, water, iodine, potassium permanganate, FD&C blue no 1, compound tinctures, potassium iodine, inert ingredients. 405-665-2682 is phone number on bottle |

It also helps alleviate irritations and rashes, and even works on flea dermatitis and insect bites. Ideal on postoperative suture lines, suture removal areas and hoof resections to seal and protect the vulnerable skin from infection and speed healing.
Use Champion Shield to treat all skin conditions affecting horses and large animal
Our Champion Shield Silver Liquid Bandage contains many natural ingredients for exceptional skin and wound care- purified water, vitamin E, cellulose, nanosilver, and our own proprietary polyacrylate polymer. It contains nothing that will cause stinging or any toxins, antibiotics or harsh chemicals. Hydration gives soothing protection to sore, inflamed or dry skin. Polymers can be natural (beeswax, cotton, DNA) or man-made. Polyacrylates are a man-made polymer often found in plastics used in medical and dental implants because they are 100% safe, non-degradable and non-toxic.
