User questions & answers

Question: Is it easy to use
Answer: Very Easy to use. Bought this one as a wedding present and they love it and also stated that it was easy to use. This is my second purchase for this model.
Question: Can you make sherbets and sorbets with this ice cream maker
Answer: Hello Catherine, Yes, the recipe book that came with the ice cream maker has recipes for sherbet and sorbet. I have used other recipes other than the ones in the book that it came with and they worked fine. I would think that any ice cream maker would be able to make any frozen desserts. There are also recipes for frozen yogurt.
Question: DOes it come with a cap to cover the container while its in the freezer
Answer: I find it best to put the leftovers in 16oz plastic containers or what size you want. It keeps for a few weeks that way.
Question: how do you use it
Answer: Put the mixture in the metal container and close it. Be sure the dasher/beater is in it. Hook up the motor. Start machine. Pack in layers with ice, then rock salt (1st layer goes up approx. 1/3 the height of the container), then more ice and more rock salt and continue on until you have layered up to the top. The machine should be running while you are doing this. Keep adding more ice and rock salt as it melts until the churning slows down and stops due to the thickness of the ice cream. The ice cream will be soft and should sit for a few minutes before the dasher is removed from the container. Remove the container from the ice and salt surrounding it. Freeze overnight if possible as the ice cream will harden as it freezes. Adding rennet to your ice cream mixture will insure a more solid texture but this depends on the recipe, and it is optional. Enjoy your machine. Hint: If you are using Vanilla, Mexican Vanilla will add a slightly coconut taste to some recipes....we love it and prefer the Mexican Vanilla.

User questions & answers

Question: Do I just add everything in it or do I have to boil items and then pour it into the machine
Answer: That depends on your recipe. I have not had to boil anything. There are mixes you can buy and you mix with heavy cream and just dump everything in and turn it on.
Question: do you sell extra gel canister
Answer: No
Question: Can you make sorbet with this
Answer: Nop
Question: Is ice required
Answer: No, Ice i not required. You freeze the container for 48 hours and just a few seconds before adding the chilled liquid, you put the container in, attach the paddle, turn it on then add the liquid. Don't add the liquid without it being on or it freezes and the paddle can't work.

User questions & answers

Question: is the mixing paddle supposed to turn? mine doesn't seem to do that, just the container turns
Answer: Just read and review booklet instructions and it states the bowl and not the paddle turns. I also thought I had a defective ice cream machine until I re-read directions. Cuisinart should really print in boldface this fact. Would definitely save much aggravation. I love my Cuisinart ice cream machine !!!
Question: does this make good yogurt
Answer: I make frozen yogurt with this every week, and my recipe is SO easy: 1 quart VANILLA (not plain) yogurt, 1 pkg thawed frozen cherries (or berries of any type). No salt, no sugar, no milk, no nothin' else. Turn it on for 20 minutes and you're done. Yummy frozen yogurt. Other favorite flavors, always beginning with VANILLA yogurt: 1) coconut and chopped pecans; 2) 1/2 cup of mini chocolate chips
Question: Can I make ice cream using this machine without eggs?, and does the maker come with a recipe book
Answer: I stopped using eggs because for some reason, the ice cream would freeze too hard. I now use: 1 cup cream, 2 cup half-and-half, 3/4 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 1 teaspoon vodka (helps the freezing), pinch of salt, pinch of cinnamon. It's great.
Question: As soon as my ice cream maker is full it continually roams around the counter what's up with that
Answer: That sometimes happens due to having an extremely flat surface and moisture condensation buildup underneath the ice cream maker. It's science not magic.

User questions & answers

Question: What are the dimensions of freezer bowl
Answer: 6" tall 7" wide
Question: I'm quite confused. The listing says that it doesn't use rock salt but these reviews indicate that it does. Salt or no salt
Answer: The confusion is being caused by having all three listed as if they were color options. The WHITE 68880 (left) and RED 68881 (middle) models are 1.5 qt and use a freezer container and NOT ROCK SALT OR ICE. The WHITE 68330N model (right) is a 4qt that uses rock salt and ice. All three are listed near the "Color" selection box on the their main pages and have the same pool of customer reviews.
Question: Does anyone know if you can buy the freezer bowls by themselves? I really like this machine and would love to have a couple of extra bowls
Answer: Yes, I finally called Hamilton Beach with the phone number off of there site and found that they do sell the freezer bowls by themselves for $9.99. But, they are out of stock for now and I was told to call back in couple of weeks. Hope this helps.
Question: The product description says no rock salt required, but most of the reviews mention using it. What's the story here
Answer: The confusion is being caused by having all three listed as if they were color options.
Question: Can this be used to make vegan ice creams
Answer: Yes I would soften them up before freezing your vegan mix
Question: Can the bottom be separated? There is no crack in the outer bowl. I'm hearing water in between the inner/outer casing and unable to open it to drain
Answer: No it can't. What you are hearing is not water but the solution, in some cases a gel like substance that freezes when put into tbe freezer. When frozen it keeps the bowl cold while the ice cream is churning. Hope you enjoy your machine we have 2 and we are delighted with both! The secret is making sure the bowl is well frozen. At least 24 to 48 hrs. Before use.
Question: how does it work? my sister did not give me the instruction book
Answer: You freeze the bucket in your freezer for at LEAST 24 hours. 2 days is better, and if you have space you can just leave it in the freezer indefinitely until you are ready to use it. When you are ready to make ice cream, you mix up whatever recipe of ice cream you want (about 4 cups liquid to put in, because it expands), CHILL this mixture in the fridge, and then take out the bucket, pour in the ice cream mix, and put the paddle and lid/motor element on top, plug it in, and let it run. It should freeze up in about 30 minutes (it depends on the mixture and other factors). Then you eat! Pretty easy and works well. Easy to clean, too.

User questions & answers

Question: can you use fat free ½ & ½ and get it to set up
Answer: I was not pleased with this product. I followed directions, but it wod freeze around the inside of chilled bowl but the rest roils not "set up" no matter what kind of milk or 1/2. & 1/2 was used.
Question: Does anyone know what antifreeze Hamilton Beach uses in the freezer bowls? There's a white film at the edge and I don't know if it's safe to use
Answer: I experienced the same thing the other reviewers mentioned with a white substance forming on the bowls. I stopped using it afterwards.
Question: What is the electricity specification, kindly look at the machine or power supply, is it said 110-240 V
Answer: I have the electric (not battery) model. Mine is 120 Volts and 12.5 Watts.
Question: Can you use only fruit to make soft serve yogurt or is this strictly for ice cream
Answer: You can use anything you want to freeze, half and half is too rich, coconut milk is very creamy - more than haggan-das, fruit, sugar as needed, water, yogurt and fruit or flavorings, this is an amazing little ice cream maker. I often use baking cocoa, dry coffee and coconut milk with a small amount of sugar for a great half cup of coffee/mocha type ice cream. It comes with two freezing bowls so you can make enough for company or just you. My only complaint is that it makes too little at a time, but that does keep me down to a proper serving! I love fruit with added water and sugar. As much as you can imagine. This is one thing I wouldn't give up! If only it was bigger so that I could over-indulge but then I would!
Question: Where is it made
Answer: Fabrique en Chine....Hecho en China....Made in China.....
Question: Does it actually churn on its own? Plug it in press a button and bam
Answer: Not sure what "bam" means, but it certainly churns unassisted. The paddles are turns by an electric motor.
Question: Does it use ice
Answer: No. You freeze the canister inside for 24 hours. Make the ice cream mix and let it chill overnight. in 15-20 minutes you have ice cream.
Question: Have followed all the directions. How do I keep the recipe from freezing to the floor/walls of the canister and jamming the paddle
Answer: There really is not way to keep it from freezing to the sides or bottom of the container. I'll tell you what I do with the stuff that freezes to the container. After I have removed all that I can to bowls for freezing I use a plastic spoon and run it down the sides and across the bottom to get out what is frozen and eat that right away. Make sure you use plastic (I tried a metal spoon and I scratched the interior of my canister) As far as jamming the paddle I have not had that problem. I can tell you that when the ice cream is done the paddle will keep stopping and going the other direction. If you are adding things to your ice cream like nuts or chips or something make sure they are really small and that can also jam up the paddles. I hope this helps you out

User questions & answers

Question: Why won't my lid stay on
Answer: Because the plastic dasher/paddle gets warped (at first I thought it was from washing the paddle in the dishwasher, but I'm on my second machine after maybe five years and washing it in hot water after using it seems to have done the same thing so perhaps it's just from use) and so it doesn't revolve "flatly" in the circular groove in the clear plastic cover when it's placed on top. I find that eventually it seems to settle down and revolve evenly without any wobbling, so to speak. Rather than use tape, I've used a small but heavy pan with a base a bit larger than the top of the machine set on top of the clear plastic cover until it's revolving evenly - maybe the first five minutes of use. Other than that, and the need to use a hard - but not too hard: it has to have some flex - plastic utensil to remove the last of the frozen ice cream from the interior bottom and sides of the freezer bowl because it's made of aluminum and scratches incredibly easily, it's a terrific unit.
Question: my machine will not freeze the mixture after the tub in freezer for a week. its like cold milk with some ice. two different batches same results. Why
Answer: Quality ice cream from plain milk?? no way! I use half and half along with heavy cream and get the most delicious ice cream you can imagine! and in only 25 minutes. Also turn your freezer down. If your freezer is empty it may not even go to zero degrees! I clean and rinse the tub quickly and return it to the freezer quickly. Its still mostly frozen when I put it back in and only takes 2-3 hours to refreeze completely! I bought a second tub but never need to use it! This thing has worked perfectly for me and everyone loves my ice cream! The secret is in the better ingredients. more costly yes...but sooo worth it! My recipe: 3cups of half and half. 2cups of heavy cream. 1&1/2 cups of C&H sugar dissolved in the cream. 2 table spoons of imitation vanilla. 1 tiny pinch of salt. Try you will love it! Please don't order a round steak and expect a filet mignon. life does not happen that way. ENJOY!
Question: Is the interior of the mixing bowl stainless steel
Answer: The interior of the mixing bowl scratched after first use. So I don't think it is stainless steel
Question: Is Cuisinant ICE-30BC machine easier than Cuisinart ICE-21 to use
Answer: They both look exactly the same in function, its just the 21 is a bit smaller and has more plastic. Check this guy's video on Youtube and it breaks down the ICE-21. http://youtu.be/jPPdSCHBTR4And he did the same for the ICE-30BC: http://youtu.be/Q40vHKdJmpY
