Answer:	My guess is 4-5 inches. How much it sticks up is dependent on how thick your mattress is. If you have an 8 inch mattress or more you probably wouldn’t notice the railing when it’s in the down position. We use it as security to keep my son from rolling out of his top bunk bed. His mattress is only 3 to 4 inches thick and therefore it sticks up about an inch or so. We love it as it’s very convenient and it provides the safety I want on the bunkbed without having to extend the whole length of the bed.

This also means you need to check the sellers information on the product about the warranty and if it still applies. For example, you don’t want a device that is out of warranty or only has two months left on it, etc.
