13 best blade sharpeners
Blade sharpeners are essential tools used to restore the sharpness of knives, scissors, and other cutting implements. They are a valuable addition to any kitchen and can help maintain the effectiveness and safety of your knives. Here's what you should know about blade sharpeners:
Types of Blade Sharpeners:
- There are several types of blade sharpeners available, each with its own method of sharpening. The most common types include: a. Manual Knife Sharpeners: These are handheld sharpeners that require you to pass the blade through a slot with sharpening materials. They come in various designs, including handheld pull-through sharpeners and sharpening stones. b. Electric Knife Sharpeners: Electric sharpeners use motorized grinding wheels or abrasive belts to quickly and efficiently sharpen knives. They are easy to use and provide consistent results. c. Honing Rods: Honing rods are not sharpeners but are used to realign the edge of a knife. They are particularly useful for maintaining the sharpness of already sharp knives.
Sharpening Angle:
- Different knives have different bevel angles, and it's important to choose a blade sharpener that can match the angle of your knives. Many manual and electric sharpeners offer adjustable angles to accommodate various blade types.
Sharpening Stages:
- Some manual and electric sharpeners have multiple sharpening stages. Coarse stages are for repairing damaged or dull blades, while finer stages are for honing and refining the edge.
Knife Compatibility:
- Ensure that the blade sharpener you choose is compatible with the types of knives you own. Most sharpeners are suitable for standard kitchen knives, but some may not work well with specialized blades like serrated knives or Japanese-style knives.
Safety Features:
- Safety should be a priority when using blade sharpeners. Look for features such as non-slip bases, safety guards, and secure handle grips to prevent accidents during sharpening.
Maintenance:
- Regularly clean your blade sharpener to remove metal shavings and debris that can accumulate during sharpening. Follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions to ensure the longevity of your sharpener.
Technique:
- Proper technique is essential for effective sharpening. Follow the instructions provided with your sharpener or refer to reputable resources for guidance on how to sharpen different types of blades.
Cost and Quality:
- Blade sharpeners are available at various price points. While it's important to stick to your budget, investing in a high-quality sharpener can provide better results and long-term durability.
Storage:
- Consider the size and storage options for your blade sharpener. Some are compact and easy to store, while others may require more space.
Blade sharpeners are valuable tools for maintaining the sharpness and functionality of your kitchen knives and cutting tools. Regular maintenance and proper use can extend the life of your blades and ensure that they remain safe and effective for culinary tasks.

Product description
The Original Knife & Tool Sharpener is the first knife sharpener designed to sharpen every knife you own. Using flexible abrasive belts, the sharpener is able to sharpen not just straight bladed knives, but also curved knives, tanto blades, filet knives, serrated knives, gut hooks and virtually any other shape of knife blade. The Knife & Tool Sharpener uses precision angle sharpening guides to ensure that you get the proper angle every time. Two guides are included: a 50° guide for hunting and outdoor knives (25° per bevel) and a 40° guide for thinner blades and kitchen knives (20° per bevel). Professional knife makers use flexible belts to put a razor sharp edge on their blades, and now you can have the same technology at home to use any time your knives get dull. You may already have other sharpening methods, but never before has a knife sharpener been able to quickly and easily sharpen this broad range of knives to such extremely sharp results. Sharpening scissors requires the use of the scissor guide. Freehand sharpening cannot create the consistent edge necessary for scissors to cut. The scissor guide is set at 65° based on the most common scissor edge angles. The guide is designed for common "household" size scissors, including kitchen and shop shears. A 60° angled scissor guide is available on the optional 40° Outdoor Knife Guide. It is possible to regrind damaged scissor blades to 65° or 60° angle regardless of the original angle of the edge
- Sharpen every knife you own like a pro quickly, easily and with repeatable, consistent results. Creates the sharpest blades you've ever had!
- Easily Replaceable Abrasive Grit Belts. Comes with premium abrasive belts to meet all your sharpening needs: Coarse (P80), Medium (P220) and Fine (6000). Abrasive belts won't burn or damage blade steel during sharpening.
- Precision sharpening guides provide fast, easy, repeatable and consistent results. Kitchen Knife guide sharpens blades to a 40° angle – Outdoor Knife Guide sharpens to a 50° angle.
- Can also be used to sharpen a wide range of bladed shop tools and lawn and garden tools such as Lawn Mower Blades, Garden Pruners, Shears, Shovels, Scrapers and more. Also makes the ideal hand held detail grinder
- 1-year warranty – warranty only valid for North American 110v power source applications. Use of power converters for 220V not recommended. Can be run with 12V power inverter (min. 150 watt) from car, truck, RV, boat, etc.
User questions & answers
Question: | how about sharpening gut hooks on hunting knives...how hard is this to sharpen |
Answer: | Its very flat I use the coarse and extra coarse to flatten water stones all the time. I would recommend them to anyone for just water stone flattening it works great but in also use it to sharpen with great results |
Question: | Will this sharpen Japanese chef's knives that have a 30° (15° per side) angle |
Answer: | You only get one but they show the 3 different grits. These aren't stones but rather diamond embedded steel plates. |
Question: | Anyone know how this model differs from the ken onion edition for $130? is this model nearly as good at |
Answer: | Here's the "what for" on this item You absolutely can sharpen any metal on this stone, but you will be limited to the actual sharpness and bevel width. This stone is made with larger diamonds than most coarse stones. Because of this, as well as its length and width (and skid-free bottom), it can take nicked and out-of-true edges and get them back on track very quickly (use water only, no oils). It is a 2X coarse blade, and awesome doing what it is intended to do (this includes grinding down chisels, whittling tools, whetstones, iron, steel, etc). It could be used to put a decent edge on your blade, but it really is limited to coarse work needed to prepare it for the proper stone; I recommend soft stones from Arkansas, they make great whetstones for fine honing, but any quality soft stone is the next step. To make this long answer longer, the reason the DMT is mentioned and recommended to flatten whetstones is that, again, the large diamonds go to work quickly and grind down uneven, pocked, or dipped anomalies on the much softer soft stones which makes plumbing a straight edge on a fine blade much more effective. So, basically, you keep the DMT to grind the soft stone to level, use it to work the blade to rid it of abnormalities, and then let that rejuvenated hard and straight blade make woo with that fine Arkansas (or personal choice of) whetstone (water, spit, and oil are optional). Sorry for the long story, take care of the ones you love, thank a vet, prepare, prepare, prepare, and have a great September; especially those of you who have the privilege of experiencing the changing of the colors! Also, it's the time of year we wait for; muleys, white tail, wapiti, antelope, and turkey (plus whatever else ya'll get to hunt and stock in your territory). Prep them blades, clean and sleep with them guns, shake them cartridges to loosen up and distribute the powder, and keep field stones handy for quick edges for the cold, morning, field dressing...And thanks for the question! |
Question: | How well does this work on mower blades |
Answer: | Allene is correct re coarse, fine and extra fine. However, grit sizes can be confusing because of the different grading systems of the particles. Abrasives with the same grit number can actually have different particle sizes. It all depends upon the grading system. For example a 2,000 grit water stone would not have the same particle size as a 2000 grit wet dry paper. There is even a difference among the paper abrasives. The Europeans use the FEPA system. Their abrasive sizes are preceded by a P (e.g. P220). Americans use the CAMI system. CAMI just has the number (e.g. 220). Again identical numbers might have different size particles when measured in microns. Therefore, I always try to get a reading on the particle size in microns. A micron is 1/1,000th of a mm. DMT also makes Extra Extra Coarse which is a 120 mesh (thats 120 little openings per sq. in.) and particle size of 120 microns. Extra Coarse is 220 mesh and a particle size of 60 microns. The coarse grit is 45 microns. Fine is 25 microns. Extra Fine is 9 microns. There is also an Extra Extra Fine which is 8000 mesh that is a 3 micron particle size. > 50 microns is considered grinding material. 15 - 50 microns is honing material and less than 15 microns is considered polishing material. I hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I sharpened serrated steel knife with it |
Answer: | Yes you can. The sloped edge of ceramic is the main sharpener for serrated knives. One can also use the diamond rod, if the serration needs a more aggressive approach. |
Question: | Will this sharpen a ceramic knife |
Answer: | The label "ceramic" on one of the slots does not refer to the type of blade the slot is intended to sharpen; it refers to the type of sharpening media in the slot. As Frazz stated, the slot is intended to sharpen steel blades. |
Question: | is this better than the pocket pal 1 by Smith's....or about the same |
Answer: | I haven't used the pocket pal so it wouldn't be fair for me to say but I've used several different lansky products & they are worth the money. |
Question: | Knife noob here. What's the use of each 3 sharpeners? As in, which do I use and for when |
Answer: | I just want to correct some misinformation in the answers here. Bob Graham - "The graphite (black) rods". LOL, the black material is not graphite. Graphite would disintegrate instantly and sharpen nothing. The black material is tungsten carbide and meant for reshaping a seriously dull blade or nicks and dings. "Tungsten carbide is approximately twice as stiff as steel, with a Young's modulus of approximately 530–700 GPa (77,000 to 102,000 ksi),[4][7][8][9] and is double the density of steel—nearly midway between that of lead and gold. It is comparable with corundum in hardness and can only be polished and finished with abrasives of superior hardness such as cubic boron nitride and diamond powder, wheels, and compounds." The stuff is used for coatings on industrial cutting tools and it is MUCH harder than any knife steel you will ever own. So why don't they make knife blades out of the stuff? Because it's also very brittle. Tungsten carbide is sometimes added as a thin coating on cutting tools. Henry H. - The long tapered ceramic piece mounted at a slope isn't just for serrations. That can also be used for freehand sharpening instead of or after you use the ceramic V-Notch. That's what I use it for. I find the V-Notch has trouble getting the full edge of the blade to and even sharpness and it will leave a thin strip of metal at the edge of the blade. On a bench you'd normally remove that thin metal at the end of the sharpening process by using a leather strop to work that thin waste metal back and forth until it just falls off. But in the field, you don't have a strop available. Hint, after you use the V-Notch run your thumb nail from the the top of the blade towards the bottom until your thumb nail runs off the bottom edge (away from the cutting edge). Do this on both sides in several spots. On one side or the other you'll feel a very slight "catch" as your thumb nail passes off the edge of the blade. That slight "catch" you're feeling is the little wavy sliver of waste metal at the very edge of the blade. That needs to be removed for a razor sharp edge. This is where the big ceramic honing stone comes in. CAREFULLY hold the sharpener with the ceramic pointing down and away from you and drag the blade down and away from the hand holding the sharpener. It doesn't take much pressure. Do one side and then flip the knife over and do the other side. Keep flipping it back and forth and polishing the edge with light strokes until you can no longer feel your thumb nail catch anywhere along the length of the blade. What you are doing is bending that waste metal back and forth until it falls off, leaving the blade at an almost perfect smooth point. That's about as sharp as you can get a blade. And this will get you to about 90% - 95% of the sharpness I can achieve with a whetstone, oil, and a strop on a bench. It sounds like it takes a long time but in reality it takes maybe a minute or two to keep a blade in shape using the ceramic V-Notch and the large freehand ceramic stone. That's why I love this thing in the field. It ain't perfect but it's quick and easy when you're miles away from a full sharpening setup and you need an edge NOW. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what are the dimensions of this puck |
Answer: | Exactly the same size as a swimming pool, chlorine tablet. I use one for removing stains from my plaster swimming pool. Fits neatly into pool-tool handle/pole with a tablet gripper (e.g. Pentair 542068 Algae Gon Chlorine Tablet Holder Pole Accessory with Snap-Adapt Handle ) for scouring away stains. |
Question: | does it have directions with it |
Answer: | There are directions on the cardboard blister pack that the stone is sealed in. There are many instructional videos on U-Tube. Wranglestar has some of the best. Look on his UTube site under axe and knife sharpening!! Cheers, Rick |
Question: | Do I have to use honing oil with it |
Answer: | You don't have to. I have used it with and without. It does seem to glide much smoother across the blade when I use honing oil. I've even heard of some people using water. Honing oil is relatively inexpensive, so I tend to use it. |
Question: | Anyone know the specific grits |
Answer: | Lansky did a video on youtube for Shotshow 2014. In this video, the Lansky rep. said the Puck grit is as follows:Coarse side = 120 gritFine Side = 280 grit |

The Puck Axe & Tool Sharpener
This pocket-size Lansky Dual Grit, Multi-Purpose Sharpener is ideal for sharpening lawnmower blades, machetes, hatchets, axe blades, shovels and spades plus a variety of other cutting and chopping tools.
The Puck’s easy-to-grip contoured shape, provides for safe, simple tool sharpening. Dual-Grit design provides a coarse side for quick cutting and shaping, and a medium side for final sharpening and finishing of your edge.
Coarse Grit: 120.
Medium Grit: 280.
Using the Puck
Step 1 - Firmly grip the tool to be sharpened or lock in vise to prevent slipping. If desired, apply a few drops of Lansky’s Nathan’s Natural Honing Oil to the grit on the side of The Puck which will be used to sharpen.
Step 2 - Grasp The Puck firmly with thumb and fingers, supporting it by the palm of the strong hand. Move The Puck in a circular motion, overlapping the circles as you move along the entire cutting edge to be sharpened. For the best results maintain a consistent angle while sharpening.
Step 3 - Work one whole side of the tool’s edge before repeating the sharpening procedure on the other edge.
Suggestions:
1. For badly worn, nicked or very dull edges, use the coarse grit side of The Puck first. To apply a finer edge, repeat the process with the medium grit side of The Puck.
2. If tools to be sharpened merely need a touch-up or dressed edge, skip the step with the coarse grit and use only the medium grit side.

Finally, a knife sharpener anyone can use! in about 10 seconds, sharpen knives (even serrated knives), cleavers, axes, machetes, and many other cutting tools. The large ergonomic handle fits either hand safely and securely. The full length finger guard protects your fingers. The sharpening blades are diamond-honed Tungsten carbide and provide years of reliable use. AccuSharp knife sharpeners will not rust and can be cleaned with soap and water, or in the dishwasher. Replacement sharpening blades are available.
Versatile and easy enough for anyone to use safely, the AccuSharp 001 Knife Sharpener lets you quickly sharpen a wide variety of bladed tools, from straight and serrated knives to cleavers and axes. Its unique, ergonomic design guards your fingers while a dependable, diamond-honed tungsten carbide blade puts a precision edge on your tools.
Versatile, User-Friendly Design
A sharp blade makes it easier to get work done quickly and safely. The innovative AccuSharp Knife Sharpener lets you sharpen most blades in around ten seconds. Sharpening is oil- and mess-free, and it doesn't require guessing at angles or handling rough, awkward stones. This sharpener's easy-to-use design makes it a great tool to have on hand in professional and personal kitchens, as well as an easy choice for hunters, fishermen and women, gardeners, and craftspeople.
Featuring a unique, ergonomic handle, the AccuSharp fits neatly in either hand to accommodate both right- and left-handed users, and it includes a full-length guard that protects your fingers throughout the sharpening process.
Fast, Effective Sharpening
To get started sharpening, you simply place your knife on a table or counter top with the cutting edge up. Hold the knife handle securely with one hand. Then let the "V" notch on the sharpener straddle the blade, and use your thumb to apply light pressure as you draw the AccuSharp down past the point of the blade.
When you first use the AccuSharp on a blade, several passes may be required to make sure that your knife's cutting angle conforms to the AccuSharp angle. But once that angle is achieved the first time, it should take just two or three brief passes to put a sharp edge back on your knife--which means that sharpening fits into your busy schedule instead of interfering with it.
Dependable, Long-Lasting Construction
To deliver years of reliable use, AccuSharp sharpening blades are crafted from diamond-honed tungsten carbide, one of the hardest known materials. And because even the toughest industrial-quality blades eventually begin to show wear, AccuSharp's unique design allows you to reverse the blade to double its life span. Most users report an average of five to 10 years between blade replacements, which means that it's easy to ensure that your sharpener will be ready to go when you need it.
AccuSharp Knife Sharpeners will not rust, and they can be cleaned easily with soap and water or in your dishwasher.

Answer: | I have used this on my serrates knives but I do it very gently. It works wonderful on all the other knives. One mistake that people make is they think that the honing tool is to sharpen the knives it only is to straighten the edge of the knives. I hope that this answers your question. Have a glorious Thanksgiving and a Blessed Christmas. |
Question: | Does this work on cheap knives bought from the dollar store or would it damage the AccuSharp |
Answer: | The directions say it works on kitchen knives. AccuSharp has a lifetime warranty. |
Question: | How do I reverse the blades? Lower to upper or front to back? Instructions say to keep "dot" on blades facing the handle |
Answer: | All you need to do is place the sharpener on a flat surface with the screw-heads on top, unscrew the top half and lift it up making sure that both blades are left on the bottom half. Now just lift one blade and put it in the slot of the second without rotating or flipping and the second blade in the first. When you do this, the dots on the blades will continue to point in their original direction i.e. facing toward the tail end of the handle. Its just that the position of one blade behind the other is reversed. |

Edge Grip Feature Gives More Flexibility when Sharpening
The Edge Grip is designed with a unique feature called “edge grip. ” What does this mean? Well the bottom of the sharpener has been designed to allow the sharpener to rest on the edge the counter top or table. Why is this helpful? Sometimes when you sharpen a large chef’s knife with a smaller sharpener, you might drag the tip of the knife across the counter top. This can damage the knife or worse the countertop. So sharpening on the edge with the edge grip allows the knife to pull through the slots from heel to tip. Of course you can still use the Edge Grip on top of the surface but isn’t it nice to have flexibility when sharpening if you need it? The bottom is made of a non-slip material that allows for safe and sturdy sharpening.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this work better than conventional Sharpening Steel |

Question: | can I sharpen scissors with it |
Answer: | I used this knife sharpener on nearly all the knives in my kitchen. |
Question: | Can this be used for Japanese knives, which use a 16-17 degree angle as opposed to a 20-22 degree angle? I don't want to ruin my Shun. Thanks |
Answer: | I just flip the knife sharpener over to get rid of any metal particles. I also clean the knives before and after sharpening. |
Question: | Will this work on serrated blades |
Answer: | I haven't tried it since I only have Fiskers brand scissors, but the angle of the sharpener looks too high for regular scissors. I would assume not for scissors. |
