9 best maple cutting board
A maple cutting board is a type of cutting board made from maple wood, specifically from hard maple species like sugar maple or rock maple. Maple cutting boards are highly regarded in the kitchen for their durability, aesthetic appeal, and functionality. Here's what you should know about maple cutting boards:
Material: Maple is a dense, tight-grained hardwood known for its strength and durability. Hard maple, in particular, is prized for its toughness, making it an excellent choice for a cutting board that can withstand the rigors of chopping, slicing, and dicing.
Durability: Maple cutting boards are known for their longevity. With proper care and maintenance, they can last for many years without showing excessive wear and tear. The hardness of the wood helps resist knife marks and scratches.
Knife-Friendly: Maple wood is gentle on knives, which means it won't dull your blades as quickly as some other materials. This is important for maintaining the sharpness of your kitchen knives.
Aesthetic Appeal: Maple has a warm and attractive appearance with a light, creamy color and a fine, uniform grain pattern. Many people choose maple cutting boards not only for their functionality but also for their natural beauty, which can enhance the look of any kitchen.
Hygiene: Maple is a non-porous wood, which means it is less likely to absorb liquids, odors, or bacteria compared to some other materials like plastic. Proper cleaning and occasional oiling or seasoning can help maintain its sanitary qualities.
Maintenance: To keep a maple cutting board in top condition, it should be cleaned after each use with warm, soapy water and dried thoroughly. It's also recommended to periodically apply food-grade mineral oil to prevent the wood from drying out and cracking.
Variety: Maple cutting boards come in various shapes, sizes, and thicknesses to suit different culinary needs. Some boards even feature unique designs or patterns created by the natural wood grain.
Functionality: Maple cutting boards are versatile and can be used for a wide range of food preparation tasks, from chopping vegetables to slicing meats and fruits.
Cost: Maple cutting boards are available at different price points, making them accessible to a wide range of budgets. While they may be more expensive than some plastic cutting boards, their durability can make them a cost-effective choice in the long run.
Environmental Considerations: Maple is a renewable resource, and responsible harvesting and manufacturing practices make maple cutting boards an environmentally friendly choice.
In summary, a maple cutting board is a durable, knife-friendly, and aesthetically pleasing kitchen tool made from hard maple wood. It is a popular choice among home cooks and professional chefs for its longevity and natural beauty, as well as its ability to preserve the sharpness of kitchen knives. Proper care and maintenance are key to ensuring the longevity of a maple cutting board.

The History of John Boos & Co
In 1887, Effingham, Illinois blacksmith Conrad Boos used a Sycamore tree placed on three legs while hammering horseshoes. Three years later, a local butcher realized a wooden Boos Block could be used for cutting meat, and had one custom made. Word spread to surrounding small towns and cities and by 1911, John Boos & Co was shipping custom butcher blocks from coast to coast. Throughout the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, John Boos expanded their production and product range to include tables and workbenches, the majority of which went to the war effort during WWII. By the 1940s, John Boos had earned their outstanding reputation for quality and craftsmanship, and John Boos butcher blocks were found in every restaurant, food store and butcher shop in America. Today, the traditional craftsmen work ethic is still alive and well at John Boos, where all boards and butcher blocks are still proudly manufactured in Effingham, Illinois. Often imitated, John Boos boards and blocks are favorites of professional chefs and can be found in restaurants and commercial settings worldwide.
Committed to Environmental Integrity
John Boos’ Hardwood foresters follow professional best practices that mirror natural forces. Individual trees are selected for harvest, encouraging forests to renew and regenerate themselves naturally and prolifically. John Boos & Co. recycles 95% of all raw lumber scraps and sawdust which are used to generate electricity and create steam to fuel the boilers. John Boos sawdust is also recycled as livestock bedding for local agricultural needs.
Care and Maintenance
Keeping Your Board Sanitized:
Wash your John Boos cutting board with hot soapy water after each use and dry with a clean towel or let it air dry. For further sanitation, the board can be rinsed with a vinegar or chlorine bleach solution. (1 teaspoon bleach to one quart of water/5-to-1 ratio of vinegar to water) Do not soak the board in water, this will damage the wood. Like all natural wood cutting boards, John Boos boards are not intended for the dishwasher.
Maintaining Your Board:
Oil your cutting board on all surfaces every 3-4 weeks to maintain the original Boos block cream finish with beeswax. This quick task will protect and prolong the board’s life and ensure it is enjoyed for decades to come. John Boos recommends using John Boos Mystery Oil and/or John Boos Block Cream. (Sold separately on Amazon.)

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it made in the usa or is it made in china? the responses are very contradicting |
Answer: | Hello! Edge Grain means that the maple rails are laid down edges up (resulting in a linear pattern) during construction. The other type is "End Grain" meaning board pieces are laid on end. Thanks! John Boos and Co |
Question: | Is the maple end grain |
Answer: | Hello, Boos Boards and Blocks are formaldehyde free Thanks, John Boos and Co |
Question: | Can you provide more information about caring for the board? Does it come pre-seasoned and how often does it need to be conditioned |
Answer: | Hello Ms Wenzel, Well, we have to say you stumped us on this one! This board is made from Maple Wood with an all- natural oil finish. Have you owned the board for awhile? Did you purchase it from Amazon or from a third party seller here on Amazon? Have you used other oil products on it? We do know that when people use food based oils (coconut, olive oil- both not recommended), they could potentially go rancid, which would lead to an unpleasant smell. If that perhaps is the case, we recommend the following: Wash your John Boos cutting board with hot soapy water or rinse with a vinegar or chlorine bleach solution. (1 teaspoon bleach to one quart of water/5-to-1 ratio of vinegar to water) Do not soak the board in water, this will damage the wood. Like all natural wood cutting boards, John Boos boards are not intended for the dishwasher. Use John Boos Mystery oil (sold here on Amazon) to moisturize and protect the board when it is dry. Repeat oil every month, or more often if the board is new or you live in a dry climate. These quick steps will ensure this board is a constant companion for years to come! Please do write us back if you have further questions. We are curious to hear about a resolution! Sincerely, John Boos and Co |
Question: | How deep is the juice groove around the edge |
Answer: | The actual name of the product is Boos Block Board Cream. It is marketed on the tube as, "Natural Moisturizer for All Types of Wood". The listed ingredients are Natural Unbleached Bee's Wax and Food Grade Mineral Oil. I use the product roughly once a week to moisturize the wood after first wiping the board down with a water soaked cloth. The entire board requires roughly one teaspoon of product on a cloth to moisturize the entire surface. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it made in America |
Answer: | The key to maintaining these boards requires 1) don’t let water pool after using; 2) “a lot of oil” is not required—I used about two tablespoons with a paper towel, let sit for 30-60 minutes and remove excess; and 3) don’t allow water to pool under the board. I have two boards; the first one was purchased on Amazon a number of years ago. It’s a beautiful deep color (due to reqular oiling) and has no cracks or other problems. |
Question: | How much does it weigh |
Answer: | Wood is a natural product that is susceptible to seasonal expansion and contraction. When you make an end grain cutting board, you are typically using pieces of wood from many different trees, with different moisture levels and different age and grain patterns. The upshot here is that it shouldn't come as a shock when a board like this comes apart sometimes. The company should work with customers whose board comes apart and it sounds like they do. What people need to understand is that a cutting board may be perfect at the time it is sold, but when it gets to the customer's house it is in a new environment and it can and will move a bit. It's impossible for a company to "know" how a particular board will hold up after a few weeks of use. HAving said all that, if you are going to charge $200 for a cutting board, you dang well better make sure that any customer who experiences issues with a new board had better be taken care of with a prompt replacement. Just my $.02. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What’s the best oil you recommend |
Answer: | I use Boos Block Mystery Oil, and Boos Block Board Cream. They work great, and I absolutely love the Sonder Reversible Cutting Board! |
Question: | What's the best way to store this board |
Answer: | The best way to store this board, if you have the counter space, is standing up on your counter. You can lean it on a wall or on your backsplash. If you do not have the counter space to store it, it is very important to make sure you completely dry the board with a clean kitchen towel after washing and then let it air dry for a few hours prior to storing it inside a cabinet or pantry space. Because wood does absorb water and moisture, keeping it in an open area with airflow is best to make sure the board does not maintain any moisture which can lead to bacteria growth. |
Question: | Is this actually made in the U.S |
Answer: | This is made in China. I found it on alibaba for $12 each if you buy a pallet of 500. I doubt seller designed it unless designing it is by choosing it on alibaba and then put their logo on it. In fact, you can find all this seller's cutting boards on alibaba for $8-14 each on alibaba. There's nothing wrong with buying stuff from China and resell it because that's pretty much everything in the US. I just think marketing is a bit misleading because it makes you think you are getting something unique and made in the US. But it's really not and very easy to prove. |
Question: | How do you take care of it? All our wood boards in the past end up smelling overtime. Is there a good, non-toxic product to treat the wood |
Answer: | Hi Gabe! Thanks for your interest in our Motley Cutting Board. The board needs to be washed with soap and warm water after each use, then towel dried. You should also stand the board up to make sure it is evenly dried and no moisture is left sitting between the large cutting surface and your countertops. Lemon is also recommended to clean the with occasionally if you're using the board to prepare food with strong scents such as fish! Most importantly, all wood cutting boards will require regular oiling (we recommend a food grade mineral old). Regular oiling depends on how frequent you use the board. If you use the board several times a week, oiling once a month is highly recommended. If you use the board less then once every few months. Basically, as soon as your board looks dry, you should oil it! By the way, all of our products include step by step cleaning and care instructions and we're also very easy to reach should you have any questions after you purchase the board! We are a small Los Angeles business and we appreciate your interest and support! Thank you! - Tiffany, Co-Founder/Designer |

Question: | Is this board reversible? from john boos it days all cb series are non-reversible. thank you |
Answer: | This cutting board weighs 5.5 pounds |
Question: | Are there side handles carved in for carrying |
Answer: | Hello Miranda, This is a great question. Yes, this board is reversible. Both sides are totally flat/smooth and do not feature a juice groove. Integrated hand grips on either end make it easy to lift and move this board. It is part of the CCB collection, which features classic End Grain construction (resulting in the "checkerboard" look of the board), and is a real showstopper. If you are looking for a Boos Block that also 20 inches long/15 inches wide and features a integrated juice groove- cop/paste this link into your browser search bar: https://www.amazon.com/John-Boos-Cutting-Groove-15-Inch/dp/B00LCAC0A0/ref=sr_1_16?keywords=JOhn+boos+reversible&qid=1560446709&s=gateway&sr=8-16 Another option: https://www.amazon.com/John-Boos-CB1054-1M2015150-Cutting-Inches/dp/B07FGL9ZFY/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=JOhn+boos+reversible&qid=1560446769&s=gateway&sr=8-3 A larger option to consider is a 2.25 inch thick board that is 24 x18 inches and features a juice groove: https://www.amazon.com/John-Boos-Reversible-Cutting-Handles/dp/B000P7DMYE/ref=sr_1_12?keywords=JOhn+boos+reversible&qid=1560446769&s=gateway&sr=8-12 Hope this helps you on your shopping journey! Thanks, John Boos and Co |
Question: | How deep is the juice groove in this board |
Answer: | No. Maybe after you first get it because there’s no oil on it at all but after a while you won’t have to. A few other things that are probably obvious but worth mentioning are that you should wash by hand and dry immediately. Don’t soak it or let it stand on its side (in a sink, for example) when wet b/c it will warp and then not lay flat. Last thing...if you’re using it as a charcuterie board, I recommend putting wax paper under the cured meats and cheese so that the oils from the meat and funk from the cheese doesn’t get into the grain of the wood. It’s really a great board! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does a knife glide smoothly on this cutting board when cutting veggies etc |
Answer: | Hello! Edge Grain means that the maple rails are laid down edges up (resulting in a linear pattern) during construction. The other type is "End Grain" meaning board pieces are laid on end. Thanks! John Boos and Co |
Question: | Can this one withstand force used to cut the bones using cleaver |
Answer: | Hello, Boos Boards and Blocks are formaldehyde free Thanks, John Boos and Co |
Question: | Is this a true end grain? It certainly doesn't look like one |
Question: | Does it have any kind of finish/varnish/coating? If yes, which one? Did you use glue or it is from a whole piece of wood? Thank you |
Answer: | The actual name of the product is Boos Block Board Cream. |
