3 best energy efficient dehumidifier
Energy-efficient dehumidifiers are appliances designed to remove excess moisture from the air while minimizing their energy consumption. They are commonly used in homes to maintain comfortable indoor humidity levels, improve air quality, and prevent issues like mold and mildew growth. Here are some key points about energy-efficient dehumidifiers:
Purpose: Dehumidifiers are used to reduce the humidity level in indoor spaces. High humidity can lead to discomfort, musty odors, and health problems, making dehumidifiers essential for maintaining a healthy and comfortable indoor environment.
Energy Efficiency: Energy-efficient dehumidifiers are designed to remove moisture from the air with minimal energy consumption. They use advanced technologies and features to achieve this, such as efficient compressors, fans, and smart humidity-sensing controls.
Energy Star Certification: Many energy-efficient dehumidifiers are Energy Star certified, which means they meet specific energy efficiency standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Energy Star-rated appliances are designed to consume less energy while providing the same level of performance as non-certified models.
Capacity: Dehumidifiers come in various sizes and capacities to suit different room sizes and moisture removal needs. It's important to choose a dehumidifier with an appropriate capacity for the space you intend to use it in.
Humidity Control: Energy-efficient dehumidifiers often feature humidity control settings, allowing users to set their desired relative humidity level. Once the target humidity level is reached, the dehumidifier will cycle on and off to maintain it.
Auto Shut-Off: To save energy and prevent over-dehumidification, many models are equipped with auto shut-off functionality. This means they will turn off when the desired humidity level is reached and then turn back on if the humidity rises above the set threshold.
Continuous Drainage: Some energy-efficient dehumidifiers offer options for continuous drainage, allowing them to drain collected moisture directly into a floor drain or a container. This feature can reduce the need to empty the water tank frequently.
Filter Systems: Dehumidifiers often include filters that help improve indoor air quality by capturing dust, allergens, and other particles as they pass through the unit. Regular filter maintenance is important for optimal performance.
Quiet Operation: Many energy-efficient dehumidifiers are designed to operate quietly, making them suitable for bedrooms and living areas without causing significant noise disruption.
Placement and Maintenance: Proper placement of the dehumidifier in a room is essential for efficient operation. It should be positioned away from obstructions and have sufficient airflow. Regular cleaning and maintenance, such as emptying the water tank and cleaning the coils and filter, are also important for energy efficiency.
In summary, energy-efficient dehumidifiers are valuable appliances for maintaining healthy indoor air quality and preventing moisture-related issues in homes. They are designed to remove excess humidity with minimal energy consumption, often featuring advanced controls, energy-saving modes, and filters to improve air quality. Choosing an appropriately sized and Energy Star-certified dehumidifier can help you save on energy costs while effectively managing indoor humidity.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it an issue if the dehumidifier is oversized? Couldn't get humidity of 400 sq ft basement below 60% (from 70) with 30 pint, thinking about 70 pt |
Answer: | Bigger ones just have more capacity if needed. So they draw more power, remove more water and shut off. It's not more heat overall, small ones just run longer to do the same work, IF they can do it at all. The 70pt unit has about 2x the throughput so that would work better if the 30 can't do it. A big one should capture the water and shut off, so... No heat once the set point is reached. Later it should turn back on as needed to maintain the setpoint. Concrete is porous to water vapor (and radon), so most humidity is probably coming in through the basement slab depending on your geographical location. You could seal the concrete. That helps a lot. If it's concrete blocks... there's fewer options. Whole house AC has about 10X the capacity of these units. A medium sized dehumidifier will raise the temperature in a closed room by 3-4 degrees after a few hours. A full basement.... probably not affected much in temperature. Small units make less heat since they don't remove much water either. They should publish the efficiency ratings to really know how much water is removed per KW-hr of energy used. A large 70 pint unit at 400 watts running 4 hours a day (to hold the humidity below 50% for example) takes the same power as a 100 watt unit running 16 hours a day to do the same task. A small silent (Peltier chip verion) in the same location would never get done. You'd need 20 of those to keep up (based on their specs). Units with a compressor tend to be louder but are far more efficient vs the silent electronic Peltier chip style (45 watts typically). Those remove about 1/50th as much water as a compressor model so they tend to run all the time and take several days to fill a little bucket since they don't have much throughput. Each style has it's purpose. Tiny, silent models are ok for closets and bedrooms but have barely any effect in a larger living room or basement. Most of those appear to use the same small 45 watt chip. |
Question: | Can this be used with an appliance timer? Or would the timer clicking on to power the unit require also a person again pressing the on button |
Answer: | Yes, you can use a timer. The humidistat is probably more well suited to the task. Keep in mind that power cycling this sort of equipment ages it quickly. My dad would jam these things on and after 20 years they would be covered with gunk, still working. Instead of cleaning it, he would replace the unit. |
Question: | I am wanting to use this product in my home when I am away. I will be gone twenty days at a time. Will it drain continuously over the time |
Answer: | I have same question. It will drain automatically but the humidity keep dropping if "Conti" mode is used. The humidity setting will maintain if "Conti" mode is off but the auto drain is also off and water will flow to the container. |
Question: | Does this machine automatically reset if power goes out |
Answer: | I have this problem. When power resumes it will come back on in the Continuous mode which has run up my electricity to a point I have called company and told it must be reset manually to whatever settings you wish to have it running at. We loose our power frequently and this is in a second home where nobody there to reset it. |
