12 best menstral cups
Menstrual cups are eco-friendly and reusable alternatives to disposable tampons and pads used during menstruation. Here's what you need to know about them:
1. Material and Design:
- Silicone, Rubber, or Latex: Menstrual cups are typically made from medical-grade silicone, rubber (latex), or elastomer. These materials are safe for the body and can be easily sterilized.
- Bell-shaped: Most menstrual cups have a bell-like shape with a stem at the bottom for easy removal. The cup is inserted into the vagina, where it creates a seal to prevent leaks.
2. How They Work:
- Collection: Menstrual cups collect menstrual fluid instead of absorbing it. They can hold more fluid than tampons or pads, making them suitable for women with heavy flows.
- Insertion: To insert, the cup is folded and then placed inside the vagina, where it opens up and forms a seal to prevent leaks.
- Removal: To remove the cup, the stem is gently pulled, and the cup is pinched at the base to release the seal. The contents are then emptied into the toilet, washed, and reinserted.
3. Benefits:
- Eco-Friendly: Menstrual cups are reusable and can last for several years with proper care, reducing the environmental impact of disposable menstrual products.
- Cost-Effective: While the initial cost is higher than disposable products, the long lifespan of menstrual cups makes them more economical in the long run.
- Reduced Risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS): Unlike tampons, menstrual cups do not pose a risk of TSS because they do not encourage bacterial growth.
4. Hygiene and Care:
- Sterilization: Menstrual cups should be sterilized before and after each menstrual cycle, usually by boiling in water for a few minutes.
- Cleaning: During the menstrual cycle, the cup is emptied, rinsed, and reinserted. At the end of the cycle, it is thoroughly cleaned and stored in a breathable container.
5. Considerations:
- Fit: Menstrual cups come in different sizes, so it's important to choose one that fits comfortably and suits your flow.
- Comfort and Learning Curve: Some women may find it takes a few cycles to get used to using a menstrual cup, but with practice, they can be comfortable and reliable.
6. Health Considerations:
- Allergies: Women with latex allergies should opt for silicone or elastomer cups.
- IUDs: Women with intrauterine devices (IUDs) can use menstrual cups, but it's important to be cautious and consult a healthcare professional for guidance.
Menstrual cups have gained popularity for their convenience, eco-friendliness, and long-term cost savings, offering a sustainable and reliable option for feminine hygiene.

User questions & answers
Question: | does the size only matter in terms of flow or if you are over 30 will a small fall out and a large is needed |
Answer: | Even though age could play a role when selecting your cup, at LENA we believe that there are a couple of more important factors. Due to LENA cups' ergonomic design, most women can successfully use either size but choose one over the other depending on their flow, cervix height (can your vagina support the length of LENA Large,) and general physique. If you your flow is light to normal we generally recommend LENA Small, regardless of age. Our small cup is also great for women with lower cervixes and teenagers due to its compact size, gentler rim and high collection capacity. We recommend LENA Large for women of all age with normal to heavy flow. Our large cup is very comfortable and also has a soft rim which offers an easy and pain-free insertion. If you are over 30 but have a light flow, you can successfully use LENA Small. |
Question: | Do you feel the cup while wearing it |
Answer: | As I have post on another question... On my very first try of this product (and very first time EVER using a cup excluding the nightmare softcup trial) I danced with my toddler, went to physical therapy (movement like yoga) went swimming afterward. I made sure to dive, flip under the water and even walked on my hands in the pool my legs straight up in the air and I did this vigorously and repeatedly just to test the Lena cup! Then I took a nap on the sofa. Later after 8 hrs of total use I removed the cup. There was no leak and no mess with removal. plus it was only about half full. So I cleansed it reinserted it using the 7 fold and slept in it. I am a very uneasy sleeper. meaning I turn all over the place. I turn constantly from my back to either one of my sides and I almost always turn onto my stomach a least twice a night... This said I never felt it and Im wearing now and I dont even notice it. And I have a low cervix so its not too high up in me either. Its makes you feel natural as if you arent even on your period.I have to add this is my 2nd day trying this product I have never used a cup besides one day trial of instead softcups (that you can feel and the overall experience was a nightmare) With Lena I only felt it once when I first was trying to figure out how to insert it. It took me about ten times of removing and inserting to feel I definitely had a feel for what to do but looking back I honestly think I had it right by the 2nd or 3rd time. Self doubting myself was what made me keeping trying by the 8th try I put it too far up for my body and that was the only time I "felt" it. I wasnt painful but just a little uncomfortable with a slight bit of uneasy pressure. But it was a good thing it made me feel uneasy. It actually boosted my confidence that I had been doing it correctly that whole time before. That one time of doing it wrong was what I needed to let me know for sure how it needs to be done correctly and what not to do. I realize there was no need to shove it as far as I could up inside me lol. Then I practiced a 9th time and on the 10th I was more than confident I had it right. |
Question: | How would I know which size cup to buy |
Answer: | Most women can wear either LENA cup and choose one size over the other primarily based on their blood flow amount, cervix height and general physique. Age and birthing history could play a role as well.Generally, women with light / normal flow choose LENA Small and women with normal / heavy flow choose LENA Large. We recommend first-time cup users to start with LENA Small. Our small cup is also ideal for young women and teenagers. LENA Small works great for women with low / medium cervix height, while women with high cervix can wear either size LENA cups. |
Question: | Is there a reason the holes are angled or is it just aesthetics |
Answer: | To add to what others have said, for some reason the angled holes are so much easier to clean than straight holes. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do I know what size to get I am 17 and I have only used pads |
Answer: | I am caucasian with course curly hair and it did not do anything for me. My hair was still frizzy and didn't look like I had any product in my hair. It was $30 and a big waste of money for me, I ended up giving it to a coworker. It may be better on finer hair, I am not sure. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend. |
Question: | I’m 18 and have a medium-heavy flow, however I’ve never used a tampon before. Should I opt for the 0 or the |
Answer: | I like the gel much better, but it might make a difference depending on your hair type. If your hair is thick and course, you may like the lotion better. The lotion made my hair look greasy. |
Question: | My cup moved very high up on its own, does that mean it is too small |
Answer: | I do and it works great for me. Apply to wet, not damp hair. |
Question: | Size 0 how big |
Answer: | I would guess my grandson has low porosity hair, too. I think this product works well by using a generous amount on damp hair. |

Question: | Is this product Latex-free? I'm very allergic to latex |
Answer: | I have ridiculously heavy periods with lots of clotting. I used to use 2 super plus tampons at a time, plus a pad, and would bleed through in an hour. The cup works great for me. I often add a pad as backup on my heaviest days, but still, the cup holds more than 2 super plus tampons. On my heaviest days, I can wear a Softcup about 2 - 2 1/2 hours before leaking. Twice as long (or more) than tampons. |

If that is what you're asking, yes is mostly the answer. The Saalt Soft series of cups are made from a softer silicone than our standard Saalt Cups. Hope that helps answer your question. |

Question: | Item says Diva Cup #2 Post Child Birth. Two sizes are listed but both show pictures of size 2 can someone explain this |
Answer: | I ordered the size 1 on this particular item and got the size 2 like pictured. (Which is what I hoped would happen.) It says size 1 but it means size 2 - 1 pack. I ordered it even though I was worried about getting a size 1 but I got a size 2. |
Question: | Curious about the feeling of the stem rubbing on clothing or my insides, any issues with this |
Answer: | I am on my first cycle with a MC and the stem is driving me insane. I cut a little off and then a hour later cut a little more and it's still driving me crazy. I'm gonna try inside out or cutting off the entire stem. |
Question: | How do you know it's full or time to change |
Answer: | I've used this cup for almost 3 years now... I know when I can feel the cup slide down, it's time to change...I also know that every 1 1/2 to 2 hours on my heavy days (day 4/5) I have to dump and clean. I keep watch on the clock... and this is gonna sound weird, but when I dump, I say the time out loud and normally I take a nap or doze off (my body is nuts when it's heavy days) and my husband will say "babe- the 2 hours is up!" And I get up. It's nice to have a helper lol |
Question: | This is a horrible question but, what about large clots? I am at that stage where my period is full of big clots. Can this handle those |
Answer: | I am a newbie... the first day of my period went perfect, but on the second, I discovered the hard way that my flow is too heavy to wait 10-12 hours to empty the cup. I am using the #2 cup. I think I have to empty it three or four times a day... still working on it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone used this while swimming? Does it stay put in the water |
Answer: | Yes! I live on an island and go to the beach every other weekend. No issues with the Diva cup whatsoever while swimming in the ocean. |
Question: | This is stupid, but what is the possibility of it it getting stuck |
Answer: | I know this is an old question, but maybe it will help other people who are having issues and looking for tips on getting the cup out (like I did). If you can't grip the cup, or are having trouble reaching it, squat down all the way - so that your butt is touching your heels. This will help push it out a bit, and make it more horizontal so you can pull it out easier. Once you have it pulled out a little bit from the stem, you should be able to grasp the body of the cup easier in this position to squeeze it and break the seal. Once you've done that, you can stand up to remove it the rest of the way. Hope this will help someone else! |
Question: | Serious question: has anyone ever had trouble getting the Divacup out upon removal? Really want to try the diva cup but terrified of this happening |
Answer: | No need to worry. I was worried too, but it is easy. So, there are muscles down there, they are used for pushing out babies and they are the same muscles used for kegel exercises. When it is time to take out the cup, you push, like a kegel exercise or like you'd imagine it would be to push out a baby, then pinch it just above the stem and pull, breaking the seal. The first time I did this because the diva cup went high up there, now this is routinely how I remove the diva cup because it is really easy. |
Question: | Hi; I've never had a child, and prefer 'slim' tampons, but I am 30, and I've got a fairly big build (tall, broad-hipped). Which size should I go for |
Answer: | As others have said, if you have never given birth vaginally start out with size 1 regardless of age. I tried the size 2 first since I’m over 30 and it didn’t work well. It was too big which prevented it from forming a proper seal and caused leaking and discomfort. Not a cute look. I switched to size 1 and found that it works perfectly! I’m so happy that I’m no longer dependent on tampons! But seriously, the age recommendation is silly. 30 isn’t the magical age where a woman’s birth canal suddenly looses all elasticity. If you read through the answers here it’s pretty clear that most of the 30+ women w/o children had better luck with the size 1. |

User questions & answers
Question: | When will you be able to sell to mexico? we have very little options there. where can i find these in my country? do you know other sellers |
Answer: | We are only able to wholesale within the US right now so sadly no stores/sellers in Mexico yet. We are working to be able to sale internationally, but sadly this takes time. Thanks for your interest in our cups! |
Question: | how to choose the size |
Answer: | Many use both cups, the regular on their heavier days, and the small on their lighter days so we offer a two-pack that has both sizes. If looking to purchase a single cup there are many factors that may help you decide: Small Saalt Cup - 2-3 tampon capacity - light flow - low cervix - beginner cup user - 25 mL Regular Saalt Cup - 3-4 tampon capacity - heavy flow - high cervix - cup users - 30 mL |
Question: | I'm over 30 but only had a C-section not a vaginal birth, I tend to have lighter periods. What recommendation do you have for sizing |
Answer: | You will likely be able to comfortably use either Saalt cup size with the right tips. Many use the small for light to normal days and the regular for heavier flow days. This is why we also sell our cups as a 2-pack. Sizing is not an exact science as we all have unique anatomies, but there are more factors than just childbirth (C-section or not) and age. For example, if you have a low cervix and/or strong pelvic and vaginal muscles the small may work best for you. Likewise, if you have a high cervix and/or very heavy flows the regular may work best for you. These are just the opposite ends of the spectrum as again many can use both sizes. Question: | I bought a regular size cup from saalt it has good seal but still leak, and I have issue with weak urine stream when using this. help please |
Answer: | When your cup is inserted correctly, you shouldn’t experience any discomfort or leaking. First check the position. Saalt Cup sits lower in the vagina than a tampon. If it is too high or too close to the cervix, it can leak or cause discomfort. The current positioning you're using may be applying pressure to your urethra causing the weak urine stream and be contributing to the leaking. Insert the cup at an angle to match the natural slant of your vaginal canal. For many women this will be horizontally towards your tailbone vs straight up. Leaking can also be caused by a poor suction seal. Make sure the four air holes are not clogged and that the cup has fully opened. Swirl a finger around the base of the cup to check for any folds or indentations. Pinch the base of the cup and rotate it to make sure it is opened completely. If leaking persists let us know and we'll offer additional tips. Most importantly keep trying small adjustments, everyone is different. |

Question: | Is it fda approved |
Answer: | Sure,All our products are FDA certified. |
Question: | How many menstrual cups does it bring |
Answer: | It fits 1 cup at a time it comes with 1 snack cup 1 large cup |
Question: | I get big clots on the day 2 how does the cup help |
Answer: | If you consider yourself a heavy bleeder then you are going to be amazed with the cup. Cups for the most part last 6-12 hours without being removed. You might see most of your blood co-mingles with your urine if not using a tampon. When first using the menstral cup, when you clean your blood will be really thick and not fill the cup all the way it is normal so do not panick. This bundle pack comes with directions of how to insert the cup. For me it is hard putting it in and it is easy to take it out. Work out each method of insert to which one you like. |

User questions & answers
Question: | are these the same as the saalt soft cups |
Answer: | Hi! These are not the same as the Saalt Soft Cups. Saalt's original menstrual cup was designed to be the easiest to use and most comfortable cup on the market. The medical-grade silicone has a velvety soft finish and is on the slightly firm side of average and is engineered with a bulb shape that retains its form very well. This makes it an excellent cup for first-time cup users because the slightly firmer structure allows it to pop open very easily when inserted and creates a really good seal, so it's leak-free and sits comfortably in place. It is so comfortable that we hear from new customers literally every single day that they can't even feel it once they have it in and even forget they are on their period! The Saalt Soft is a natural progression for Saalt's menstrual cup line. It has the same bulb shape and soft, rounded transitions but is made from a slightly softer medical-grade silicone that is designed especially for those with bladder sensitivity, cramping or discomfort with firmer cups. Because the silicone is softer, it can take a little more effort to get opened, but once it's sealed, many find it to be the perfect fit for comfort. As of January 2020, we do not currently offer the Saalt Soft line in a Duo Pack. |
Question: | What are the dimensions of these cups |

Question: | Can you get 2 cups at this price, but the small |
Answer: | We do not currently have a two-pack option with two small cups, but we love your idea and we will certainly look into it. Thanks for your interest in Saalt! |
Question: | Are they both the same size |
Answer: | No, the 2-Pack comes with one size Small Saalt Cup and one size Regular Saalt Cup. Many women enjoy having both sizes to use the small for lighter days and the regular for heavier flow days. Thanks for clarifying! |

User questions & answers
Question: | is this okay to use with the IUD Paragard |
Answer: | The OrganiCup is placed low at the base of the vaginal canal and away from the cervix. This means that it shouldn’t interfere with an IUD. However, you should always make sure to release the suction seal when you're removing the cup. We have written a blog about using the cup with an IUD: https://www.organicup.com/blog/iud-and-menstrual-cup/ As with any other gynaecological concern, we'd always recommend you talk with your gynaecologist before you start using a cup with an IUD. best Maria, OrganiCup |
Question: | Does size a work for high cervixes |
Answer: | Bigger cup. According to my doc, I have an “average” cervix (I think I have a high one), and the small size is tricky to get out. Get. The. Bigger. Cup. It’s just longer and a tad wider at the opening. |
Question: | does the cup come squished? the box looks more narrow than the cup in the photos |
Answer: | Yes!, but since the cup is very flexible, it will only take 5-10 minutes for the cup to find its natural shape after being removed from the packaging. |
Question: | How does it hold up for those who gym and lift heavy weights - use a lot of bearing down |
Answer: | It would actually *not* be very messy! As a user, I can confirm that bearing down does not break the seal on its own, and you can't push the cup out by bearing down. I lift, swim, and do yoga and have never had a problem leaking while doing either! In fact, I feel more comfortable working out with the cup; it feels like it's not actually my period at all and I don't have to deal with pad chafing or tampon leaks! |
