12 best leather oil

Leather oil is typically not related to essential oil blends, carrier essential oils, aromatherapy, alternative medicine, or health care. Instead, leather oil is a specialized product used for the maintenance and care of leather goods, such as leather furniture, jackets, boots, and bags.It is not used for therapeutic or aromatic purposes.

Leather oil is designed to moisturize and protect leather items, preventing them from drying out, cracking, or becoming stiff over time. It helps to maintain the suppleness and durability of leather products. Leather oil is usually made from a combination of natural oils and waxes, such as neatsfoot oil, lanolin, and beeswax. These ingredients nourish the leather and provide a protective barrier against moisture, stains, and general wear and tear.

To use leather oil, you would typically:

  1. Clean the leather item: Before applying leather oil, it's essential to clean the leather to remove any dirt or dust. You can use a leather cleaner or a damp cloth for this purpose.

  2. Test a small area: Before applying leather oil to the entire item, it's a good idea to test it on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure that it doesn't discolor or damage the leather.

  3. Apply the oil: Using a clean, soft cloth or a sponge, apply a small amount of leather oil to the leather's surface. Work it into the leather in a circular motion, paying extra attention to areas that may be more prone to drying out or damage.

  4. Allow it to absorb: Let the leather oil penetrate and absorb into the leather for a few hours or overnight. This allows the leather to soak up the nourishing oils and become more supple.

  5. Buff and polish: After the oil has had time to absorb, use a clean, dry cloth to buff and polish the leather to a desired shine.

  6. Repeat as needed: Depending on the condition of the leather, you may need to reapply leather oil periodically to keep it well-maintained.

Leather oil is an essential product for leather enthusiasts and those looking to prolong the life and appearance of their leather items. However, it is not used for aromatherapy, alternative medicine, or health care purposes. If you are interested in those topics, you would need to explore essential oil blends and carrier oils specifically designed for those purposes.

User questions & answers

Question: Has anyone used this on sheepskin leather garments? The manufacturer says to use only lanolin products on it
Answer: I wouldn't try it....if you elect to, use it in a discrete place.....I used it for leather and would purchase it again....good luck!!!
Question: I have a new Black leather jacket , but dried for keep long time , then this product is going to get the texture like a new
Answer: I had a leather jacket that was 11 years old and had gotten pretty dried out. I had to put a bottle and a half of this stuff on it, but now the jacket is like new and I wear it every chance I get. We live in Colorado, so things drying out is a way of life here, but this stuff really did the trick. I also had an old pair of work boots down at the ranch and they were pretty dried up, but I got this stuff to restore them to working order. They don't look that great due to wear and tear, but they are soft again.
Question: What's the difference between obenauf's leather oil vs their heavy duty lp (leather preserver)? i'm interested in a product for footwear
Answer: From the Obernauf's website:Use Heavy Duty LP for the strongest level of protection for work boots, horse & tack, belts, and baseball gloves, or any leather subjected to severe elements.Leather Oil is ideal for furniture, "breaking-in" new boots and for quick touch-ups between applications of Heavy Duty LP, dry weather and moderate conditions.
Question: Is Obenauft's oil safe for couches
Answer: Leather Oil can be used on leather furniture as long as you don't mind the darkening effect. It will hydrate and keep the leather supple. Some considerations: test in a hidden sport first to see if you like the results; & several light coats are better than one thick coat when applying to avoid saturation. One coat is usually all that is needed but if it still seems dry, try another coat after giving the first coat a few hours to soak in. Buff with a clean cloth after final application to remove excess oil. You can see actual photos of before and after Leather Oil applications to leather furniture at our Instagram account, obenaufs_lp.

Rub Some Life Into Your Investment!

The oils in leather dissipate every day, especially inside a hot automobile. Use Obenauf’s Oil on leather car seats to keep them from scuffing easily and cracking prematurely. One coat of our leather preserving oil is often all you need. Buffing with a clean cloth after application removes excess oils and leaves a pleasant shine. Leather Oil will also improve the look of sun-bleached leather in cars, trucks, SUV’s, motorcycles, boats, RV’s and more. Do not apply to vinyl or other auto interiors other than leather.

Leather Preservative For Hot, Dry, Dusty Climates

Leather Oil is the best treatment for moderately wet and dry conditions. Often called the “Dry Season Oil”, it absorbs fast, conditioning your leather against dehydration and cracking. It is so effective, that one coat is all that’s needed for the thinner leather on riding boots, furniture, and gloves. Use leather oil for preserving saddles and tack during the long summer months.

Let It Breathe

Leather is a skin with pores that need to breathe. Like our skin, leather requires cleaning and moisturizing. Natural oils are best to keep fibers flexible and water resistant while allowing pores to breathe. Obenauf’s uses natural plant oil & beeswax which will allow your leather to breathe. The key to preserving and protecting your leather is to keep it natural.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this have any kind of odor
Answer: Not particularly; real mink oil has a strong odor, but this isn't real mink oil - it's mostly TALLOW instead.
Question: My car's leather seats are constantly exposed to dry and hot conditions. Would mink oil be appropriate to use on them
Answer: If they aren't suede, then mink oil would be fine to use on them. That precludes this product, though, since it isn't real mink oil - it's tallow.
Question: what is the Genus, species and country of origin of the mink
Answer: The species is bovine (as in Bessy the Hereford); this product is TALLOW with only a small portion of mink oil added to justify the word "mink" on the label.
Question: Is this squozen from fresh live minks
Answer: No. Live minks don't work well in treating your dead cow products. I recommend enjoying fried mink nuggets with your steak.

Since the primary function of a neatsfoot oil is to replace the evaporated oils in leather, replacing the oils with other natural oils is best. Used by saddle makers for over a century.

  • Naturally replaces evaporated oils
  • Preserves leather heavily exposed to outdoors such as boots, baseball gloves and saddles
  • 100% natural ingredients
  • Great quality pure neatsfoot oil from Fiebing's
  • Manufactured in the US!

User questions & answers

Question: I have a pair of chaps would 32 ozs be enough for 1 coating
Answer: Effax leather balsam contains Lanolin, Avocado Oil & Beeswax, which are essential ingredients for the care and maintenance of saddles, bridles and leather riding products. Effax leather balsam has remarkable nutritive and protecting properties, which helps to keep the leather supple and gives it high tear resistance. This leather feed is particularly suited for smooth leather tack and saddlery but equally good for handbags or leather riding boots and any other smooth leather products. Simply apply with a sponge/cloth, rub and wipe off for a smooth, non sticky and supple finish.
Question: I've always applied with a natural sponge, gently rubbing in a circular motion. Is there an advantage to using a paint brush
Answer: you can use it on chrome tanned leather (the majority of leather these days) vegetable tanned (ie; harness leather) aniline leather which generally just refers to aniline dye. It is a softening treatment and will bring back old pretty worn out leather. I have been using it for more than 20 years with good results. A little goes a long way
Question: Does this oil waterproof as well as conditioning work boots
Answer: It really depends on how much you use, and the type of leather. Matte leather, with a thin coat/ thin use stayed matte for me, albeit a tad darker. "Shiny" leather like on pieces of a western saddle positively SHINES. If I used a lot on a matte leather, it would be super shiny too. Very little goes a looong way - but refrain from use on suede (unless its dire). Suede didn't like the stuff much.
Question: Hi! What is the difference between this product and Lexol conditioner? Both have very good reviews. I have leather furniture & leather car seats
Answer: This product can be applied to bridle leather and cordovan

User questions & answers

Question: Will this help the squeak on the upper part of leather sandal
Answer: Yes it softens the leather and lubrcated deep even on vinyl products.
Question: is this product good to clean my leather sats in my car
Answer: not sure this would be a good product to clean your seats. it would be a good sealer. also, this will turn any lighter colored leather darker.
Question: will this darken the leather?- just bought some lighter Dockers and want to treat them
Answer: Yes, this is very likely to darken light colored leather. It doesn't have dye or anything, but it can darken it some.
Question: what's the difference between this paste and the 'golden' mink oil by Fiebing
Answer: So one answer was, "This particular mink oil is natural." Saying that it's natural could mean that this is 5% mink oil, and 95% other animal fats or vegetable oil etc. Does anyone know what the ingredients are? I'd really like to know what the breakdown is.

User questions & answers

Question: Is there a brush on the inside of the screw top that is used to apply the oil
Answer: No. It's just an 8oz container of oil. I bought this because the picture that I saw looked like it had an applicator tip. What I received was nothing like the picture I saw. I was just using this to oil the leather suction cup for a Coleman lantern, and was able to just submerge the cup in the oil, remove and install.
Question: Is this ideal for black car seats
Answer: No Use Saddle Soap for your car seats..
Question: Should this be applied before, after or instead of Resolene? I make leather jewelry
Answer: Resolene is a topcoat. This is oil rejuvinator type product. I don't make jewelery but I wouldn't combine the two. I would think unless the oil was completely dry you could have adhesion problems with a topcoat
Question: Would this work well for a leather dog leash and/or collar
Answer: Yes this works on all leather. Ot will become darker as the oil saturates the leather. Watch a few videos on youtube. But I swear by this stuff for boots, belts and even watch bands for break in and protection as well as care.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this product cause boots to "stretch out" or become larger like an oil would
Answer: I think the only way they will stretch out is if you use a stretching device. The oil absorbs into the leather making it water proof and soft.
Question: Does this leave a greasy/oily dust attracting, pant cuff staining residue like red wing oil or huberds shoe grease
Answer: I use this product on a 1970s saddlebags for a motorcycle. It goes on oily and soaks right in. You can wipe off the excess it is not greasy. And it does an excellent job at restoring leather especially the more dried out it is. I put it on very thick and let it soak in as it dried I put it on again several times that's why bought the gallon jug. I've also used it on my leather work shoes it is a very excellent product I highly recommend but yes it can be messy but once you get the leather pliable the way you want it you wipe off the excess and makes leather new again. Note it may darken leather but as time goes on the color will come back.
Question: My light brown leather handbag has developed dark areas along the center seam. I am looking for something to darken it all evenly. Will this work
Answer: I used Fiebing's on a new, leather belt which was a medium brown. It came out a darker brown and very supple. I was well-satisfied.
Question: Is this product safe to use on white leather golf shoes
Answer: I don't know, but I don't think so. If the are like such shoes I've know, they have some kinda surface which is close to waterproof.I use my neatsfoot oil on in-home leather furniture and on leather car seats. And too, leather jackets, an unseal attache case and suchlike. Neatfoot is meant to be absorbed.Best bet: Call Fiebings or get their online site address and ask them directly. Does this product work? Very much so. One livingroom couch I've had since the 1960's is still supple, sans scratch. Wish Neatsfoot worked on ME, at 73 my skin's like a boiled raisin, all white and wrinkly. Enjoy batting those little balls about.Oh, as my guess golf shoes are coated, how about going to a pro shop and ask a putting podiatrist?

User questions & answers

Question: Is this the same "neet's foot oil my dad purchased for my baseball gloves and hiking boots in the 1960"s? is it still made by the same company
Answer: It will darken the leather at application, and the leather will remain darker than before the treatment, if this is the first conditioning treatment for this piece of leather.
Question: Will this darken the leather? I assume it will darken the leather as you apply it, but after it dries will it lighten up or stay dark
Answer: It says Prime Did not see 100 percent pure
Question: It’s says 100 percent pure and thennit says compound , which is it
Answer: Alcohol let’s leather stretch , the kind you drink. Vodka, gin, everclear. Old joke was drink one bottle and boots quit hurting now, add a bottle into the boot and they will hurt less later. Rub enough on to soak the leather, soak your sock, and leave the boots on, preferably by walking. Then add a product like this to put the oils back in the leather.
Question: Will this oil soften hard leather (Justin) cowboy boots? I have a high arch. Have even tried covering boot and hammering leather with rubber mallet
Answer: This stuff is more spray than oil. One bottle is not going to cover a whole jacket I think. Mink oil is going to darken whatever you put it on but it will make it last longer.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this help patina my Louis Vuitton vachetta bag
Answer: Most LV bags are made of coated canvas and have leather components such as backing, straps etc. The paste will be fine for the straps but won’t do anything to the body of your Vachetta bag. Note that the coated canvas is much more durable than leather which is one reason LV uses it.
Question: I put mink oil on my light colored boots and it turned them darker than I thought it would. Is there a way to lighten them back up the way they were
Answer: Honestly, they'll never be as light as they were, the same happens to me with any mink oil or leather conditioner I've used, not just this brand. It will lighten up a little after a while, that is when I would recommend re-applying though. It is definitely worth using to keep them from drying out and cracking, especially around your ankles if it was for boots.
Question: is it good for crazy horse leather
Answer: Crazy Horse (Tuzuka Welco ) If its leather and you want it waterproof put it on it
Question: How do you applie the mink oil
Answer: Since this mink oil product normal state is quite firm at room temperature, I like to soften it up before use. I heat about 1 inch of water in a pan (about 100 degrees F) and then place the mink oil container in the water for around 5 minutes. Then I can use a soft rag to wipe the oil onto the leather to be treated. I finish that off by using another clean rag to rub and buff the leather.

Question: The "main" photo and description says 30 ml but when you read on, after clicking into it, it says 10 ml.... why? Which is it
Answer: I wouldn't say waterproof, but very much water resistant. I've easily hiked through stream, creeks, and wet grass with them getting damp, but not soaking. I've only noticed them really getting this damp feeling if water enters through the joint where the laces start. It's easily my favorite choice of boot for all activities outdoors.

Answer: I have Morten’s toe also and these boots work for me. Good luck!

Question: how's this stuff for fine dress shoes

There are more than one on the market that are not supposed to. I have some very light leather and Bick 4 has not darkened them. Let's also has a product that is not supposed to darken too. Always test an in conspicuous area, especially if you own a fine dress shoe. Many years ago I learned the hard way

The Only Natural Industrial Strength Leather Protection

Heavy Duty LP provides a natural barrier against destructive substances and reinforces leather fibers against scuffing. Due to the Beeswax/Propolis Suspension Formula, a little goes a long way. It waterproofs naturally, while still allowing the leather to breathe. With regular application, people are getting years of wear out of their leather boots!

Leather Care, Conditioning, and Reproofing

Not just for boots, Obenauf’s leather preservative (lp), is widely used to condition leather saddle bags, chaps, tack, holsters, sheathes, baseball gloves, as well as motorcycle and auto leather. More than a leather conditioner, use Heavy Duty LP as a wax waterproofing. Apply with a low heat blow dryer to reproof your cotton oilskin dusters and hats. The natural ingredients of LP can also be applied to protect unfinished, natural wood furniture.

Originally Developed for Firefighters 30 Years Ago

An Idaho Wildland Firefighter developed this unique Beeswax/Propolis Suspension Formula to protect leather against caustic fire retardant chemicals, ash, heat, water, and abrasion. Natural oils are gradually released into the fibers as a long-term lubrication. Heat or continued flexing causes oils to be released faster. Leather gets oiled when and where it needs it most; while on the job!

Recommended Application

At room temperature, apply by hand as body temperature helps melt LP into leather. Two applications last longer in wet conditions. For absorption, allow ten minutes or up to one hour between treatments. On smooth leather, buff off excess with a clean cloth. On nubuck, use a soft bristled brush. One ounce should provide one application to a pair of tall boots. Apply every 6 to 8 weeks or as needed.

User questions & answers

Question: How is the smell of the leather scent is it strong or faint, does it smell like high quality leather does
Answer: I recently hiked over 9 miles in wet, melting snow. On this,as well as previous hikes, there was some dampness from sweat, but no real wetness. Of course in heavy rain you'll need to keep the water from running down your legs.
Question: Is there a way to “activate” the scent? Straight out of the bottle there is no odor
Answer: Very easy! In fact I only wore then once or twice to "break them in," but they were already flexible and comfortable. On about my third wear I hike Half Dome at Yosemite NP and had zero issues or complaints. I was extremely happy with the shoes and seemed to have the sturdiest pair of boots on for that level of hiking compared to everyone else.
