14 best mechanical keyboards for programming

Mechanical keyboards for programming are a popular choice among programmers and computer enthusiasts due to their unique features and tactile feedback. These keyboards offer several advantages for coding tasks:

  1. Switch Types: Mechanical keyboards use individual mechanical switches for each key, resulting in a distinct tactile feel and audible click when pressed. The choice of switch type is crucial, as it affects the typing experience. Common switch types for programming include Cherry MX, Gateron, and more. Some programmers prefer switches with linear actuation for a smoother keystroke, while others prefer tactile or clicky switches for feedback.

  2. Tactile Feedback: The tactile feedback provided by mechanical keyboards allows programmers to know when a keypress has been registered without bottoming out the key. This can help reduce typing fatigue during long coding sessions.

  3. Durability: Mechanical keyboards are known for their durability, with switches rated for tens of millions of keypresses. This longevity makes them a reliable choice for programmers who spend a lot of time at their keyboards.

  4. Customization: Many mechanical keyboards are highly customizable. You can often replace keycaps, adjust actuation force, and even modify the keyboard layout. Customization options allow programmers to create a keyboard that suits their specific needs and preferences.

  5. NKRO (N-Key Rollover): Mechanical keyboards often support NKRO, which means that you can press multiple keys simultaneously without any "ghosting" issues. This can be beneficial for programmers who use keyboard shortcuts extensively.

  6. Programmability: Some mechanical keyboards come with programmable features that allow you to create custom macros or remap keys. This can be useful for optimizing your workflow and increasing productivity.

  7. Compact and Tenkeyless Options: Mechanical keyboards are available in various sizes, including full-size, tenkeyless (without the numeric keypad), and compact layouts. Programmers can choose a layout that best fits their desk space and typing preferences.

  8. Build Quality: Mechanical keyboards often have a more solid and premium build quality compared to membrane keyboards. This can contribute to a better overall typing experience.

  9. Aesthetic Choices: Mechanical keyboards come in a variety of designs, colors, and backlighting options. Programmers who appreciate aesthetics may choose a keyboard that complements their workspace or matches their personal style.

  10. Price Range: Mechanical keyboards are available at various price points, making it possible to find a model that fits your budget.Premium keyboards with advanced features may come with a higher price tag, while budget-friendly options are also available.

In summary, mechanical keyboards for programming offer a unique typing experience characterized by tactile feedback, durability, and customization options. Programmers often appreciate the comfort and productivity benefits these keyboards provide during long coding sessions. When choosing a mechanical keyboard, consider factors such as switch type, layout, programmability, and build quality to find the one that best suits your programming needs.

User questions & answers

Question: Some pictures make the led backlighting look mint green while others make it look ice blue. in-person, which color is it
Answer: The keyboard I have is 'teal' light so the mint green description fits.
Question: Does this keyboard have any pinging/echo after bottoming out the keys
Answer: Nah, there isn't any metallic ringing/vibration sound if that's what you're talking about, only the click from the keycap. I've had a keyboard that does that and it's awful.
Question: Anyone know what the fn+ prnt scrn with the target sign and g in the middle does? what about the fn and arrow keys
Answer: I programmed all the letters to dvorak and even programmed a few other buttons like PgUP and PgDn to show desktop and switch between apps. I found by accident that fn + Prnt Scrn will make the keyboard default. All letters and macros will go back to their stock letters, but press fn + Prnt Scrn again, and voila, it goes back to the programmed settings. Software not needed. It's kind cool because it can give more commands than originally thought, but I do with they detailed this function in their manuals, also hitting that combination isn't the easiest to do for actual gaming or work. But at least I can have other people use my keyboard and easily switch it to QWERTY for them.
Question: Can you insert ring dampeners on the Kailh switches on this keyboard to make them more silent
Answer: I've got another, full height keyboard with Cherry blue switches. It was much too loud, so I put foam dampers from WASD (more effective than o-rings at sound damping) on the keystems. I now have a HAVIT HV-KB390L, and it is quieter/smoother than that sound-damped Cherry blue keyboard. I have seen some articles in which you can push an o-ring up in a Kailh low profile keycap by putting it alongside a stem and pushing it up inside so the deformation of the o shape holds it in place, thought about that before I had the keyboard under my fingers - but it's IMO not necessary. I expect that WASD will eventually make foam dampers that fit the underside of these keycaps, if there's a demand.

Answer: Yes
Question: Can the cloud connect be disabled? This is a huge security risk
Answer: The Das Keyboard Model S does not connect to the cloud.
Question: Does it have backlighting
Answer: No, it is not backlit. The CODE mechanical keyboard is, if that's what you're looking for.
Question: Is this keyboard just an Ultimate Model S with key inscriptions
Answer: Yep they are exactly the same. They are both a 104 key layout, have 2 windows keys, and have a 50 million keystroke life. Depends where you look, there are some sales blobs saying there are media keys for the professional, but don't mention it for the ultimate, I have all the keys though. Put it this way I used the professional keyboard to find all the keys on the ultimate.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the thermal paste preapplied
Answer: no, it comes with a tube of thermal paste for more than 1 application
Question: What is the likelihood that the weight of this will cause the board to bend
Answer: I bought this for a new build as a replacement for my larger, older model NH-D14. I don't see any bending or visual flex with the NH-D14 after 9 years of horizontal mount on the same motherboard, and that is a tank of a cooler. Premium air coolers are just plain big, and I had this same concern with my build all those years ago. Just make sure your motherboard is tightened down securely and it will be just fine.
Question: As soon as noctua makes the nh-u12a in black, they will have my money
Answer: I for one am proud of my fugly-brown noctua fans that I use exclusively in my build (i will admit the 2x 3000rpm industrial nh-f12s on my morpheus ii 1080ti are a bit much, but i have an insane overclock on it it to keep it current until 30 series gpus sell for retail cost.) I am so proud, in fact, that I used my RGB to highlight these fnas a primary feature :) They tell all who see them that I take my cooling seriously, but am not a fanatic hydro-cultist or other dangerous sociopath. A liquid cooling setup is just asking for trouble. Every dam will fail, given time. Sooner with human error. My ryzen 5950x will arrive tomorrow, I look forward to testing my nh-uh12a on it combined with the new nt-h2 thermal paste I already haveat the ready. Other people have already proven it viable, though any short-coming will be addressed with this cooler and liquid metal thermal compound (I would buy the d15, but my case is about 2mm shy of having room)
Question: Will we get a chromax version of the new fans to use with the cooler
Answer: Yes, but that is still far away - it's not so easy to change colour on those fans as the material is rather delicate.

Product features

Award-winning NH-U12 series

First introduced in 2005, Noctua’s NH-U12 series has won more than 600 awards and recommendations from leading international hardware websites and magazines. The NH-U12A is the latest addition to this prestigious series that has established itself as a benchmark for premium-quality quiet 120mm coolers.

100% RAM compatibility on LGA115x and AM4

Due to its asymmetric design, the NH-U12A does not overhang the RAM slots on Intel LGA115x and AMD AM4 based motherboards, which ensures easy access to the modules and 100% compatibility with tall heat-spreaders. On LGA2066, the rear fan will overhang the RAM slots on the left-hand side of the socket, so RAM modules should not exceed 42mm in height. *

Dual NF-A12 120mm fans

The NF-A12x25 is a highly optimised next-generation 120mm fan that integrates Noctua’s latest innovations in aerodynamic engineering in order to achieve an unprecedented level of quiet cooling performance. Using this elite-class fan in a push/pull dual fan configuration is one of the cornerstones of the NH-U12A’s commanding performance and acoustic efficiency.

Classic 120mm tower size for excellent case and PCIe compatibility

Standing 158mm tall, the NH-U12A is short enough to fit most modern mid- or high-end tower cases. Measuring 125mm wide (including fan and fan clips), the cooler stays clear of the top PCIe slot on most standard ATX or Micro-ATX motherboards, ensuring optimum compatibility with multi-GPU setups.

Cooler Specifications

  • 2x NF-A12x25 PWM 120mm fan
  • 2x Low-Noise Adaptor (L.N.A)
  • 4-pin PWM y-cable
  • SecuFirm2 mounting system for Intel and AMD
  • NT-H1 thermal compound
  • Noctua Metal Case-Badge

* In cases with more than 158mm CPU cooler clearance, the rear fan can be moved upwards to make room for memory modules taller than 42mm.

Product features

COMPACT LAYOUT, COMPREHENSIVE FEATURES

The Drop ALT mechanical keyboard is just like the CTRL, but with 67 keys instead of 87. Absent of function keys, it wastes no space—but it still has a full set of arrows and numerals. Constructed with a solid aluminum frame with a built-in switch plate, the ALT is rock solid. And thanks to the Kaihua switch sockets, it allows you to swap switches whenever you want with no soldering required.

It’s also fully programmable via QMK, meaning you can assign macros or custom keybinds to every key. With dual USB-C connectors, the ALT is outfitted with the fastest available connections. What’s more, it has customizable RGB backlighting and underlighting. Set it to a single color or light it up with a rainbow wave pattern.

OPTIMIZED PER-KEY LIGHTING WITH MILLIONS OF COLORS

The ALT features RGB lighting so you’ll also have your choice from millions of different colors for every single key. If you want the lighting to cycle through the entire spectrum, you’ve got it; if you prefer a two-toned look to match your setup, consider it done. There’s also a built-in LED diffuser with light-blocking material to minimize hotspots found in many other keyboards. Worried about flickering? Don’t be. The backlighting displays at a super-high frame rate, so it’s clear as day even at night.

FULLY PROGRAMMABLE VIA QMK

Customizing your keyboard is a lot of fun. That’s why the ALT features a fully programmable layout, designed for modification. Using QMK firmware, you have total control over every key. Plus, the configurator allows you to program macros and customized keymapping so you can easily fine-tune your keyboard for gaming, work, or play. It’s also outfitted with two USB type-C connectors (one on each side), allowing you to transfer data and charge devices at USB 2.0 speeds.

HEFTY ALUMINUM FRAME & HOT-SWAPPABLE SWITCHES

The ALT is made from a solid block of anodized aluminum, which is known for its toughness and ability to hold a quality surface finish. Heavy enough to stay put when you're locked into an intense FPS match or hammering out an essay, the frame also has a low profile to complement your desktop. Thanks to the built-in switch plate and hot-swappable PCB, the ALT gives you the freedom to change out your switches whenever you like. Best of all? You don’t need to solder each switch. Just pop them in and they’re ready to go.

User questions & answers

Question: mac compatible
Answer: YES! OF course! However, the command keys I'm not sure on, as I'm not a big Mac user myself but yes it is compatible
Question: Please someone give me some details about the Reddragon K552 KUMARA mechanical keyboard, build / feel / overall performance? thanks
Answer: It's sturdy AF and kinda heavy so it doesn't slide around your desk. I've had mine for several months now and haven't noticed any issues. It is very satisfying to type on. I really enjoy the clicky blue switches. I play all sorts of games including FPSs and unlike the other person who answered it doesn't bother me at all to play games on this awesome KB. I've been told by coworkers that I'm NOT light/gentle on my keyboard but I also type hella fast. If you type fast and aren't light on the fingers this KB will create a noticeable din. The RGB is well lit and I had fun playing with all the light features including the one memory slot to completely customize every single keycap's light. You cannot custom animate the light for each key but the pre-installed options available seem plenty since you can cycle through all the colors including one option for all the colors and this works well on all the different animations. For example, there's a matrix style 'rain' animation which you could keep as classic green or the other several colors available, OR you can go all colors in which case you'll see the rain animation but each drop is changing color as it moves down the keys and the lingering/fading trails are also going through RGB.
Question: What is the exact usb cable length
Answer: It’s 6ft 3 inches
Question: Is this one of those keyboards that has the really satisfying clicking when you type? I felt one at best buy and I loved it
Answer: There are 2 distinct aspects to this: There is an audible click like the Cherry Blue-s or their clones. Depending on the switch used. the keyboard and the keycap, this may start out really pleasing, or you ( or your frields at the next desk) may get tired of it. Then there is a tactile bump. Most people like this. The sound itself has 2 components: The click, which is high pitched, and the "tock" as the key is hitting the keybed. This is a flat, unpleasant sound to most. The click and the tock combine into a single noise as you hit the key(s) typically pretty fast. So you end up with a "Thck" sound. After a while, some people who like the Cherry blue type clicky keyboards end up wanting something tactile, but a bit quieter. I found through experimentation, that I can eliminate the 2nd component, the bottom-out "tock" by adding o-rings to the keycap stems. Either a 0.4mm. or double 0.2mm rings. This brings the Cherry blue sound into a more civilized and pleasant realm. This is where I am at, Tried some quiet tactile switches , e.g. Halo Clear-s , and those are not tactile enough for me. I modeified a couple of keybpards ) A coolermaster 10kless that came with genuine cherry blues, and the K552 ( which came with the Outemu blue Cherry mx blue clones. Added the o-rings, and the result is quite satisfying. Still clicky, but overall more quiet and pleasant sounding. The Captain O-ring 0.4mm blue o-rings qoeked well for me. Talking abuot sounds, the K552 ( and also its full size brother, the K551) adds a metallic ringing echo to the key sound.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it work with mac
Answer: Yes...working just fine with iMac desktop
Question: Does this keyboard work with windows 10? i bought the k551 only to discover that it doesnt work on my windows 10 pc
Answer: Yes, both this and k551 work with windows 10, although not out of the box. You need to point windows to correct drivers for the built in composite usb device. See detailed list of steps in my review for the keyboard. The same steps work for k551.
Question: On a scale 1 to 10 how dose it compare to rezer products
Answer: This is the only gaming keyboard I have ever had. It does everything I could want and more. I do not know how it compares to Rezer.
Question: Does the Redragon K553 mechanical keyboard have the space bar issue some reviewers have reported? The reviews dont specify which keyboard is which
Answer: Mine is the K552. No space bar, or keys issues at all. I purchased the K552, as apposed to the K553, because not only it's $10 less, but it's a bit more compact than the K553. Only difference between the K552 and the K553 is the K553 is plate mounted. Which means there's a metal plate mounted in between the keys and the PCB, as opposed to the keys is soldered directly onto the PCB (K552).

User questions & answers

Question: can you connect this keyboard to a chromebook
Answer: It is possible to do that, but remember that some keys on the board have separate functions on a chromebook! For example, Caps Lock is Search.
Question: If you had a choice between the G810 or the G610 which would you go with? Are the keys really different
Answer: I personally would go for the cheapest one I could get. I have no idea what the G810 keys are like. In the G610 they are the same normal keys except that the symbol that shows when you use shift and key is located below the regular symbol. This is the opposite from the standard keyboards I have used.
Question: Are the key letters and numbers laser etched? That's what I'm looking for
Answer: Not sure how they are cut, but the black plastic key has the letter/number cut out and an inner liner is molded into the opening and is translucent to the light from a source below the key. By very lightly rubbing the surface of the key, you can barely feel the margins of the black key and the inner white lining. The black key "shell" is about 0.5mm thick and the white liner with the embossed letter/number that fills the cut black shell (rising up from the bottom) also is about 0.5mm, making the entire key shell about 1.0mm thick.
Question: Can you change the color
Answer: You would have to solder each switch out to change color. So no you would not want to do that.
