14 best canned green chili peppers

Canned green chili peppers are a popular food product that offers a convenient way to add a mild, tangy heat to a wide range of dishes. They are commonly used in Mexican and Southwestern cuisine and are also popular in various snack foods, salsas, and spreads. Here's what you need to know about canned green chili peppers:

  1. Varieties: Canned green chili peppers are typically made from Anaheim or Hatch chili peppers. These peppers are known for their mild to medium heat and are a staple in many Mexican and Southwestern dishes.

  2. Preparation: The peppers are harvested when they are still green and then roasted, peeled, and diced before being canned. This process gives them a smoky and slightly sweet flavor, making them versatile for use in various recipes.

  3. Heat Level: Green chili peppers are milder than some other chili varieties, such as jalapeños or habaneros. However, their heat can vary from pepper to pepper, with some being spicier than others. Canned varieties often specify the level of heat on the label.

  4. Culinary Uses: Canned green chili peppers can be used in a variety of dishes, including:

    • Adding them to salsas and dips for a mild, smoky kick.
    • Mixing them into soups, stews, and chili for added flavor and heat.
    • Incorporating them into enchiladas, tacos, burritos, and other Mexican and Southwestern dishes.
    • Layering them in casseroles and omelets for a flavorful twist.
    • Stuffing them with cheese or other fillings for delicious appetizers.
  5. Storage: Canned green chili peppers have a long shelf life when stored in a cool, dry place. Once opened, any unused peppers should be transferred to an airtight container and refrigerated to maintain freshness.

  6. Nutritional Value: Green chili peppers are a good source of vitamins A and C.They are also low in calories and fat. However, the nutritional content may vary slightly depending on the brand and preparation method.

  7. Common Brands: There are several well-known brands that produce canned green chili peppers, and you can often find them in the canned vegetable aisle of your local grocery store.

  8. Spice Level: As mentioned earlier, the spice level of canned green chili peppers can vary. Some brands offer mild versions, while others may have hotter options. Always check the label or product description if you have a preference for heat level.

Canned green chili peppers are a versatile ingredient that can add a delightful flavor and mild heat to a variety of dishes. They are a convenient pantry staple for those who enjoy Southwestern and Mexican cuisine or want to spice up their recipes with a touch of smokiness and heat.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it similar to Chipotle’s green salsa
Answer: There are two different products, the fish steaks and the sardines. Both come in soybean oil with hot green chilies. The sardines have a white background and the fish steaks have a light blue background. If you ordered fish steaks but got sardines, you were sent the wrong product. I prefer the fish steaks. Fish steaks 020100000243. Sardines 020100000083.
Question: Are they roasted or just have heavy smoke flavoring? (Some smoke flavors can really bother the stomach
Answer: Beach Cliff Canada sardines are actually juvenile herring. Even the canned Sardines Beach Cliff if packed in Canada, then it's juvenile herring. (And indeed, Beach Cliff brand sardines taste different from Atlantic and Pacific Sardines, and have a different texture.) These are herring, which Beach Cliff markets (legally) as sardines anyway.
Question: Does anyone know of a HOT salsa with no cilantro
Answer: Beach Cliff packs both bite sized Herring, and Sardines, in very similar cans. I prefer the bite sized, which are more convenient to eat with crackers or stir into rice, but both are good. They taste about the same.
Question: Hello! Can anyone tell me if this salsa has vinegar in it? Thank you
Answer: Yes. These are the bite size herring fish steaks. Not sardines.

Product description

The 150 year Ortega tradition all started with Maria Conception Jacinta Dominguez Ortega, or as we like to call her, Mama. Mama Ortega. Mama's memorable cooking did more than just bring her family together. It was in Mama's kitchen that her 11th child, Emilio, established the Ortega Chile Packing Company. Emilio's fascination with chiles began when he moved to New Mexico in 1890. Here he encountered the state's popular big red chiles. When he returned home to California a few years later, he brought with him chile pepper seeds and many recipes for dishes he had grown to love while in New Mexico. Back home with his family at their adobe house in Ventura, California, Emilio planted the chile seeds. Those chiles grew extremely well in the temperature climate of Ventura. Soon Emilio had so many chiles he had to give them away. Everyone loved them! That's when he knew he had something special. In 2003, B&G Foods purchased the Ortega brand. Like Emilio Ortega, B&G Foods has a long tradition of commitment to quality. So today, when a family picks up a can of chiles or a box of taco shells, they know they are getting the very best. This web site has been created to continue the rich heritage of the Ortega family. By sharing our collection of delicious Mexican recipes, we hope to help you create fond memories of great meals shared with your family.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it gluten free
Answer: One
Question: Is rotfl diced tomatoes with lime juice and cilantro gluten free
Answer: The cans are BPA free. From a recent article about fire roasted tomatoes 'Muir Glen has BPA-free cans, which is rare for canned tomatoes'.
Question: Would it taste good in spaghetti
Answer: It's a 12-pack (as are other canned goods I've ordered through Amazon).BT
Question: Are they bpa-free cans
Answer: Here is what I found. Muir GlenUpdated on March 20, 2012Muir Glen believes BPA is safe but they have removed BPA from their cans. Yay! Thank you, Muir Glen for listening to your consumers!"As of October 2011, Muir Glen canned tomato products do not utilize BPA in product packaging.Muir Glen continues to believe BPA is safe based on the weight of evidence of scientific and governmental bodies worldwide, including comprehensive risk assessments in Japan and the European Union along with the European Food Safety Authority's reaffirmation in December 2011 of its opinion that there is no new evidence to suggest the tolerable daily intake of BPA needs to be lowered. The FDA has also endorsed the safety of current exposure levels. However, we know that some of our consumers have chosen to avoid BPA, so we had been looking for alternatives. Working with our can suppliers and can manufacturers, Muir Glen was able to develop and test a safe and viable alternative that does not use BPA for our canned tomato products. We began transitioning to those linings with the fall 2010 tomato pack - and we completed that transition with the 2011 tomato pack. The new liners are a vinyl based liner. The safety of this can lining has been thoroughly tested. In addition to complying with requirements set forth by the FDA, Small Planet Foods board certified toxicologist has concurred with this assessment."

User questions & answers

Question: How long do these last in the refrigerator after opened? Mine have been in the refrigerator for 3-4 weeks. Are they still ok to eat
Answer: In the pack I ordered I received 12. You'll want to check the foil seal when you get them. They were all still sealed, but some that were flimsy I rebagged before freezing them.
Question: Does this come hotter
Answer: The chile is not that spicy in my opinion. Enlarge the photo of the package and you will see a scale on the right hand side where the manufacturer has judged the spiciness. Good luck.
Question: Is this available in "mild
Answer: There is not really any such thing as “pure green Hatch chiles” if you mean a specific type (pod, variety, or cultivar) of chile. “Hatch” refers to where the chile is grown in southern New Mexico. Many of the chiles grown in and around Hatch are instead named Big Jims, Sandias, NuMex Big Jims, or NuMex Sandias. In contrast, Chimayó chile refers both to a variety and where the chile is grown (northern New Mexico). I’m not sure that the following link will work, but a local weekly paper in Albuquerque published a story about the “myth” of Hatch green chile some years ago: https://alibi.com/food/43183/A-Myth-Hatched.html
Question: I can't use up a bottle in the suggested 3 weeks, once opened. Can I freeze it in baggies
Answer: Sounds to me like you have two options: 1) make an extremely large side dish and include this spice as the main ingredient, or 2) don't worry about the expiration date, and use it over the next year.
