13 best coconut flours
Coconut flour is a versatile and nutritious alternative to traditional wheat flour. Here's what you should know about it:
Source and Production:
- Coconut flour is made from dried and ground coconut meat. It's a natural byproduct of coconut milk production. The coconut meat is dried and then finely ground into a flour-like consistency.
Gluten-Free:
- One of the main advantages of coconut flour is that it is naturally gluten-free, making it an excellent choice for individuals with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.
High in Fiber:
- Coconut flour is rich in dietary fiber, which is beneficial for digestive health. It contains significantly more fiber than traditional wheat flours.
Low in Carbohydrates:
- Compared to wheat flour, coconut flour is lower in carbohydrates. This can be advantageous for individuals following low-carb or ketogenic diets.
Rich in Healthy Fats:
- Coconut flour contains healthy fats, including medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which can provide a quick source of energy.
High in Protein:
- It's relatively high in protein for a flour substitute, which can contribute to a feeling of satiety and support muscle maintenance and repair.
Absorbs Liquid:
- Coconut flour has a unique property of absorbing a lot of liquid. This means recipes using coconut flour often require more liquid than those using wheat flour.
Nutrient Content:
- Coconut flour is a good source of various essential nutrients, including iron, potassium, and manganese. It also provides a range of B vitamins.
Distinct Flavor:
- Coconut flour has a mild, nutty flavor that can add a subtle coconut taste to recipes. It complements both sweet and savory dishes.
Versatility in Cooking and Baking:
- Coconut flour can be used in a wide variety of recipes, including pancakes, muffins, cakes, cookies, and as a coating for meats and vegetables.
Dense Texture:
- Baked goods made with coconut flour tend to be denser and have a different texture compared to those made with wheat flour. It's important to follow specific recipes designed for coconut flour.
Storage:
- Store coconut flour in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Due to its high oil content, it's best to use it within a reasonable time frame to prevent spoilage.
Remember to adjust recipes accordingly when substituting coconut flour for wheat flour, as it absorbs more liquid and behaves differently in baking. This information is accurate

User questions & answers
Question: | How do we know that this flour has not been treated with sulfites? FDA regulations do not require manufacturer to list if small amounts are used |
Answer: | Anthony's Organic Coconut Flour is made from freshly harvested coconuts to preserve natural levels of lauric acid and vitamin E. Our process never includes sulfites or any other processing aid so that you can enjoy our coconut flour with its natural benefits.Best,-Anthony's Staff |
Question: | Country of origin? specifically, where is this product grown or sourced?? where is the coconut flour made |
Answer: | package states grown in the philippines. |
Question: | Does this flour make all your baked goods taste like coconut? What does it taste like |
Answer: | Hello, i have made pancakes, brownies and cookies with this flour and won't ever use regular flour again, and no it doesn'tA change the taste of what you make, this is so great for people who are diabetic or just want to go lower carb...BAKE AWAY!!! |
Question: | The header list this as non-gmo but i don't see that anywhere on the package. could the seller please verify that it is a nom-gmo product? thanks |
Answer: | @ Michael M: While there are technically no GMO coconuts (not in the genetically modified pest resistant sense anyway) you are wrong that corn, soy and canola are the only GMO crops. What about cotton, papaya, sugarbeets, squash and alfalfa? We also have gmo farmed salmon, and biotech apples and potatoes are quickly moving along the regulatory pipeline heading for certain approval (and might already be approved). BTW, these crops are ALL modified in some way to resist pests either through Roundup-ready resistance or through BT toxins - they are NOT merely modified through hybridization. (And while we're on the subject, hybridization is not entirely harmless either but that's for another discussion.) Your insistence that GMO questions are related to "GMO nonsense" makes you appear as either a biotech shill or simply as ignorant. People SHOULD be asking, and manufacturers should boldly state non-gmo on the label. It's impossible for the public, purposely kept too busy working to notice the Monsanto/FDA/USDA revolving doors, to keep up with what is and what is not yet genetically modified. I think someone needs to heed his own I'll-stated advice and do a little research. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where is coming from ? The bag doesn’t tell |
Answer: | Comes from New York |
Question: | I ordered cake flour - they substituted this. I have no idea what to do with it. Is it used the same as wheat flour? How do you measure it |
Answer: | For every cup of all purpose flour (grain flour), you only need 1/4-1/3 cup of coconut flour. For every ounce (1/4 cup) of coconut flour, you typically need one egg and sometimes you might need more. Coconut flour does not have gluten in it and eggs are needed to keep the product together. |
Question: | Does this have a coconut flavor |
Answer: | Very slight coconut flavor. You wont taste it in battered and fried foods. Haven't tried baking with it yet. It's a bit grainy, so will need to blend it with another flour, like almond or spelt. |
Question: | Where is the brown rice grown? I ask because rice grown in old cotton fields tends to be high in arsenic |
Answer: | The fact that the manufacturer is being secretive about where the rice is grown makes me suspicious enough not to buy this product. “Proprietary?” .......shady! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the expiration 12 months good for a year |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Is this processed in a factory that is certified gluten free |
Answer: | I don't believe so. 2 of my sons both have Tree Nut allergies and is able to have this flour. When my oldest son was diagnosed with a Tree Nut allergy, I was told that coconut is not a nut it's a fruit, however you could still be allergic to it. My 2nd son, who also has a Tree Nut allergy, was tested for a Coconut allergy, however he is not allergic. |
Question: | was this processed and manufactured in a factory that also handles peanuts and treenuts |
Answer: | I don't know because I used it already and do not have the bag. Sorry! |
Question: | Does this taste like coconut? I want to make it with my pizza but don’t want it to taste the coconut in my pizza. And I hate coconut taste |
Answer: | No, it doesn´t! Coconut flour is quite tasteless. I usually mix it with almond flour to increase the volume of the baking mix, and it works nicely! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Could this be milled or processed with corn or wheat |
Answer: | Hi there, Yes, the shelf life is at least a year from the production date. Hope this helps! Warmly, -Maya from Wholesome Yum |
Question: | Does the color of this flour vary? My first bag was a creamy light tan and my 2nd bag is considerably darker in color |
Answer: | Hi there! Our products meet the criteria to be certified gluten-free (and have been tested), but we have not yet completed the process to place it on our packaging. Hope this helps! Warmly, -Maya from Wholesome Yum |
Question: | Can anyone verify that the package says "peanut-free facility" as pictured? The packaging in different listings seems to vary. Thanks |
Answer: | Hi there, While there are no tree nuts in the ingredients of our coconut flour (coconut itself is botanically a fruit, not a nut), we do process other nuts in the same facility. Warmly, -Maya from Wholesome Yum |
Question: | What’s the difference between the refund and unrefined coconut flour |
Answer: | Hi there, Yes, coconut flour has a mild coconut flavor, but it's not very strong. Whether you taste it in something like pizza depends on the recipe. I do have a fathead pizza recipe that uses coconut flour and you can't taste the coconut in it. You can find it in my Easy Keto Cookbook, available here on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Wholesome-Yum-Easy-Keto-Cookbook/dp/198482662X/ Hope this helps! Warmly, Maya |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it processed |
Answer: | While all of our products are Kosher, none of our products are certified Kosher for Passover. For our products to be certified as this, a rabbi would have to be on site providing real time supervision. This is not currently a practice we have adopted. |
Question: | Is this sulfate free |
Answer: | Hi KBF, I checked my packages of Bob's Red Mill Almond Meal/Flour. There is nothing on them that indicates they are 'organic'. The only ingredient is 100% ground almonds. The product is totally gluten-free, kosher and pareve. I hope my response is useful to you. You can look for my review (dated March 9, 2015) at this product's Amazon site. |
Question: | How should it be stored |
Answer: | Many times I have used this.Tapioca flour is used in combination of other flours such rice, sorghum, almond etc... In baking products it adds a springy texture and helps in browning baked goods. Tapioco flour is used for thickening soups, sauces, and dips. To replace wheat flour you would need a combination of flours. There are many recipes online for wheat/gluten free baking mixes. I hope this helps you. Kitchen Queen |
Question: | The description and the product image at the top of the page says the bag is 6 pounds, but the product details say 3 pounds. Can someone clarify? Thx |
Answer: | I use it in cookies. When it calls for2cups I use 1 1/2 cups almond flour and 1/2 cups regular flour. They turn out better according to my husband |

Nutiva USDA Certified Organic, non-GMO, Gluten-free, Unrefined Coconut Flour brings a rich texture and subtle sweetness to your kitchen and is the perfect alternative to traditionally milled wheat flour. Unlike other flours on the market, Nutiva Coconut flour is never processed using dangerous chemicals or bleaching agents. Instead, Nutiva starts by responsibly harvesting sustainably grown Southeast Asian coconuts. The nutritious and flavorful flesh of these coconuts is scooped out, naturally dried, and finely ground into a versatile flour that is gluten free and has a lower glycemic index than most traditional flours. Nutiva Coconut Flour has a high fiber content, can be substituted for up to 1/3rd of wheat flour in standard recipes, and is a healthful addition to vegetarian, vegan, whole food, paleo, ketogenic, and gluten-free diets. Nutiva was founded in 1999 with a single purpose in mind - to Revolutionize the Way the World Eats. Our role is to produce and promote organic, nutrient dense superfoods that are good for you and good for the planet. Social and environmental responsibility is a core part of Nutiva’s culture and business. From sourcing organic products, to obtaining fair trade certification, to greening our facilities and operations, to funding tree planting at schools in our local community, we are constantly seeking ways to better protect our environment and ensure a better quality of life for employees, customers, and the communities we serve.
- ORGANICALLY GROWN and NATURALLY MILLED: Nutiva starts with organically grown, responsibly harvested, non-GMO coconut flesh, naturally dried and finely ground to yield a mildly sweet, richly textured flour without the use of dangerous and harmful chemicals.
- GLUTEN FREE AND LOWER GLYCEMIC INDEX: Nutiva Organic, non-GMO, Unrefined, Granulated Coconut Flour has a lower glycemic index than other traditionally grown and milled wheat flour and does not contain gluten.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have tried 2different recipes pancakes and bread. Yuck! Dry, heavy and grainy like sand. Any help with good recipes |
Answer: | You can buy a case of 4 on Amazon. Type B0749NXNJW into your Amazon search bar. |
Question: | How many pounds come in an order |
Answer: | If you're asking if it has been processed in a facility which could have caused gluten cross-contamination, I don't know. If the question is can it be combined with corn or wheat, yes, yes it can. |
Question: | My recipe asks for coconut flour. What can i use instead |
Answer: | I just checked the 2 bags I have in food storage and both are what I would call a creamy med to light tan. Yesterday I saw a different brand at a big box store and it was a tan about the same color as what I have at home. |
Question: | Where is this made |
Answer: | It does say so on my bag (made in a peanut-free facility) - but, bear in mind, I bought this in 2014! Still, I can't imagine the factory would have changed much since then. |
