10 best bread crumbs

Breadcrumbs are a versatile ingredient commonly used in cooking and baking. They are made by grinding or processing dried bread into small, coarse crumbs. Here is some information about breadcrumbs:

  1. Types of Breadcrumbs:

    • Fresh Breadcrumbs: Made from fresh bread that has been processed into crumbs. They have a softer texture and are often used as a coating for foods like chicken cutlets or as a topping for casseroles.
    • Dry Breadcrumbs: These are made from stale or dried-out bread. They have a drier texture and are commonly used in recipes like meatballs, meatloaf, and stuffing.
  2. Uses in Cooking:

    • Breading: Breadcrumbs are frequently used to coat foods like chicken, fish, or vegetables before frying or baking. This creates a crispy, golden exterior.
    • Binders: In recipes like meatballs and meatloaf, breadcrumbs can act as a binder, helping to hold the mixture together.
    • Toppings: Breadcrumbs can be used to create a crunchy topping for dishes like macaroni and cheese or au gratin potatoes.
  3. Varieties:

    • Plain Breadcrumbs: These are the most basic type and have no added seasonings or flavors, making them a versatile choice.
    • Seasoned Breadcrumbs: Seasoned with herbs, spices, and sometimes cheese, these breadcrumbs can add extra flavor to your dishes without the need for additional seasoning.
  4. Gluten-Free Breadcrumbs: For individuals with gluten allergies or sensitivities, gluten-free breadcrumbs are available, typically made from gluten-free bread.

  5. Making Homemade Breadcrumbs: You can make your own breadcrumbs by drying out bread slices in an oven or food dehydrator and then processing them in a food processor or blender until you achieve the desired texture.

  6. Storage: To keep breadcrumbs fresh, store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. They can also be frozen to extend their shelf life.

  7. Culinary Uses:

    • In Italian cuisine, breadcrumbs are often used in dishes like pasta with breadcrumb toppings (pasta con le sarde) and eggplant Parmesan (melanzane alla Parmigiana).
    • Japanese cuisine uses a type of breadcrumb called "panko," known for its light and airy texture. Panko breadcrumbs are often used in recipes like tempura and tonkatsu.
  8. Substitutes: If you run out of breadcrumbs, you can use crushed crackers, cereal flakes, or even oats as substitutes in some recipes.

Breadcrumbs are a pantry staple that can add texture and flavor to a wide range of dishes. Whether you're using them as a coating or a binder, breadcrumbs are a versatile ingredient in the world of cooking and baking.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this contain egg
Answer: Per side of box. Ingredients: Wheat Flour, Contains 2% or less of the following: Sugar, Yeast, Soybean Oil, Salt.
Question: How long is the shelf life
Answer: You know.....I am guessing here but I always use mine up long before it's useful shelf life is up. However I bought a 2lb package (2 bags) several months back (at least 6 months ago). They are still as fresh as can be. It does say store in a cool, dry space. They come in resealable foil packages. I wonder is a person could put them in a "Food Saver" hard container and vacuum out all the air that they wouldn't have an even longer shelf life?
Question: What are the ingredients? And what is the amount of sodium and sugar
Answer: Inredients: Wheat Flour, Contains 2% or less of the following: Sugar, Yeast, Soybean Oil, Salt. Sodium 40mg 2%, Sugars 2g
Question: Do you have to dip whatever it is in egg before using these breadcrumbs? Or do you just dip the item in the crumbs and throw in oil
Answer: As a pro cook, I have to say it depends. Traditional breading is a 3 step process: Flour, egg wash, then breadcrumbs. This gives the most, and the most even coating. However, in some cases, that applies too much breading. For example, I make zucchini crisps by just tossing slices of zucchini with a little olive oil, then a mix of Panko and Parmesan cheese, and it works great, because I want less breading on the thin slices of zucchini.
