User questions & answers
Question: | can you also use AA batteries to power these radios |
Answer: | Yes you can, however the output power will drop drastically (form 5 to I think about 2W) with no indication on the display - it would still show “H” for High power. With the included battery pack though (which is essentially 5 1.2 NiMH AAA batteries in series) it achieves 5W transmit power. Which means if you buy it because of 5W output you must use battery pack. However battery pack does not last long. It is only 700mAh. Radio consumes 42mA on standby. So about 16 hours standby time if you don’t transmit. Charding time on the other hand is 12 hours. Make your own conclusions. |
Question: | what is the best REAL range I can expect |
Answer: | There are certainly many different choices available to folks regarding radio choices. Many consumers, however, fall into the trap of believing the misleading advertising that various manufacturer’s use to help sell their products, especially when they are in panic mode due to a natural disaster (like an earthquake) or (currently) various lock-down scenarios due to the latest overseas virus. One frequently used example of this buying trap are the claims of 35 to 50 mile range from 1/2 watt UHF FRS/GMRS handheld radios with non-removable antennas (frequently seen on various Cobra, Midland, Motorola, and Uniden radios sold at various big box stores or on the internet). At UHF frequencies (and with a decent antenna), you’ll normally get around 1 mile of range for every 1 watt of power on transmit, so a 1/2 watt big box store FRS/GMRS radio is likely to get only 1/2 mile of range, nowhere near the 35 to 50 mile claims shown on the box in large type (with the phrase “under optimum conditions” shown in very small type). What that means is that if one individual is standing near the cliff face on a tall 9,000 ft. high mountain and his friend is doing the same thing 35 miles away (with nothing between the two mountains but air), then they “may” get the 35 mile range as advertised. When both individuals are at ground level, normal range is reduced to a 1/2 mile (or less) depending upon obstructions that may be in their way. |
Question: | How much range can I expect from these radios in rugged, mountainous and forested terrain |
Answer: | Expect |
Question: | do I need a gmrs license |
Answer: | I called the FCC. If the radio goes beyond 2 watts, even if you are only using the lower-power channels, you still need to spend the $70 for the 10 year license. immediate family can use radios with your license (and you on the channel). GMRS will make for a better experience. I would just get it to be safe. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it water resistant |
Answer: | Yes, resistant to light splashing |
Question: | How many watts? this model clearly has more power than other midland radios because it's listed as gmrs and requires a license |
Answer: | Haha, you have entered the wormhole. These radios are 2.85W according to the FCC filing for the radio FCC ID MMAT295. (Both T290 and T295 have the same ID). Watts can be misleading though, because this radio has a longer internal antenna than the popular GXT1000 and therefore performs a bit better. And to add to your confusion, there are 3 (yes 3) different FCC filing for the GXT1000. The newest GXT1000 radios made after Sept 2018 under FCC ID MMAGXT1050G are now only 2.5w. These radios are junk. If you can find GXT1000s a bit older before 2018 under the FCC ID MMAGXT1050P, those are a bit better at 3.07w. Then there's the totally discontinued GXT1000s manufactured before 2015 that have FCC ID MMAGXT950 that have the full advertised 5.33w. If you can get your hands on these older radios, they are amazing. |
Question: | What is -the power in watts- of these - not the bs miles which is never attainable |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the transmit wattage on the GMRS channels. I know 50 is allowed but what do these transmit |
Answer: | This particular one does not. |
Question: | Can I purchase two sets of walkies and have all four communicate on the same band. Or is the set only good for two people and therefor won't let you |
Answer: | It's not the mode (FM vs. AM) that determines the range, it's the frequency. These radios are in the 450-ish MHz range, while CB's are in the 27MHz range. The 27MHz frequencies are subject to propagation, etc. The range on a 888S is going to be a couple miles at most under ideal conditions. A CB's normal range is considerably greater, and when propagation is high, you can quite literally talk around the world on the CB. As was said in the other answer, FM is going to provide far superior clarity over AM. |
Question: | How well does the NOAA weather alert work? I'm wondering if this product would work well to keep for our family's emergency supply kit |
Answer: | Yes! SCANNINGScanning is used for hands off monitoring of your favorite frequencies. When the transceiver options are set to SCAN (via software), setting the channel selector to channel 16 directs the radio to scan the selected channels from 1-16. 1. Transceiver stops scanning when a signal is detected and continues when signal is gone.2. If there are less than 2 channels, it cannot scan. (Go figure)3. On channel 16, Press and Hold the PTT and MONI buttons while switching ON the transceiver to turn the Scanning ON or OFF.4. If FM Radio function is activated via software, the radio will not scan. Note: There is no actual FM Radio function in this radio, so this option should always remain deactivated in software. |
Question: | Why does it say 30 mile range if it only reaches 3 to 4 blocks in city & open space is a couple miles? Seems like dishonest advertising |
Answer: | Did you program the radio yet? I just two of these and the same thing happened to but until I uploaded new frequencies following the instructions at http://www.miklor.com/BF888/ |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do they come with charger? how do I recharge for use |
Answer: | They use 3 AAA size batteries. When they die, you put new ones in. No charger. Unless you buy rechargeable AAA batteries. |
Question: | Are they waterproof |
Answer: | I don't believe they are meant to be. But I used these at Shanghai Disney and it was lightly raining all day so they got wet and worked fine. The reception was great, I was inside a building on one side of the park and my mom was on the other side of park |
Question: | Can 3 people talk on the same channel |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | Can these be used in Europe |
Answer: | In most of Europe, you will need to use a radio programmed for PMR446. Frequency allocations are not the same in all countries, and FRS/GMRS frequencies in the US may be used for other purposes - such as emergency services - in countries outside the US and Canada. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these have locking channels? Would they work well in an area where there are others using Walkie talkies, such as a campground |
Answer: | you can set the channel as far as others go you just have to find a channel that's open it has 22 so its not hard to do.thats what I do when hunting and there are a bunch of others with radios it works out fine. |
Question: | I understand gmrs band cannot be used with an fcc license. how are these walkies used legally |
Answer: | A GMRS license is only needed when you use over 2 watts of power. This radio can put out up to 0.13 watts of power, so it is well within the 2 watt limit for unlicensed usage in the USA. If you do decide to get a much more powerful radio, with an output of > 2 watts, then you would get a license (as I also have) that costs $70 for 10 years. ($7/year). |
Question: | Does it come with one radio or |
Answer: | sorry for the delay. It comes with 2 radios. |
Question: | how many feet dose it go |
Answer: | In a suburban area with houses, a car dealership and a Wendy's drive-through, approximately 0.4 miles. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long do these radios last with alkaline aaa batteries? 8 hours? one day? two days |
Answer: | I have had to modify stock and other antenna to fit |
Question: | I have 1 left from a set grandson got for Christmas, can it connect with new radios on same channel |
Answer: | No --- I bought RT since I have other radios and RT for them. But you can use open source CHIRP. The RT dongle works better than the generic, btw. The driver for the generic is wonky. |
Question: | How do I remove the belt clip? I bought this and cannot put batteries since I cannot remove the belt clip |
Answer: | The GT3WP is the waterproof version. IP67 (Dustproof, splash proof, Rain proof, rated submersible at a depth of 3ft for 30 minutes.) The GT3WP is a completely different radio from the other GT3's |
Question: | Where are the input jacks located on the radio |
Answer: | Yes, you can do this with your radio with clear and loud results. It also operates on MURS. However, the radio is not certified to do this. So, do not do it or you will die. It is just like if you go 56 miles per hour in a speed limit 55 zone. Do not do that either. You will die. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How large of a metal ground plane (diameter of a metal disc) do I need to provide for a non-metal mounting on my Corvette (composite panels |
Answer: | I would say at least 6 inches. Seems to work good for me |
Question: | Will the 15w version still be able to operate at 5w for the frs channels |
Answer: | If you operate a radio that has been approved for both FRS and GMRS, and if you limit your operations to the FRS channels with a maximum power of ½ watt effective radiated power and an integral antenna, you are not required to have a license. (Note that some dual-service radios transmit with higher power on FRS channels 1 through 7; these radios can be used without a license only on FRS channels 8 through 14.) |
Question: | Do you need a license to use this |
Answer: | Yes. A GMRS license is required to transmit on this radio. It is $70 for a 10 year license. You need to purchase from FCC. This is not a HAM radio so a HAM license will not work. |
Question: | Is this a CB |
Answer: | No, it’s a 2-way radio that utilizes a different frequency band than C.B.’s. These are GMRS radios which by law you are supposed to have a license from the FCC to operate. The license is not hard to get. It’s a 10 year license for you and your immediate family that cost $70. Which averages out to $7 dollars a year. There is no test, you just go on line and register then submit your fee. I did mine on a Saturday night and it was approved on Monday. |

Question: | how many dual chager's does the 8 pack come with |
Answer: | Yes! |
Question: | Can AA batteries be used in place of battery packs |
Answer: | I am so glad there is YouTube for any question. If i haven’t look at video, I think I would just break the belt. I recommend to everyone who is struggling to take the belt clip off to watch YouTube video, it is actually very easy. But if you need to do it when you are camping you will need to take a screwdriver with you. It is a shame manufacturer can’t make good quality manual. |
Question: | I previously purchased 2 of these radios. If I purchase 2 more, will all 4 be able to communicate |

User questions & answers
Question: | The clear coil obviously goes behind your ear and then you clip that part to the back of your collar, but then what about the rest?Where does it clip |
Answer: | This was the only drawback on this device I found it is not long enough to be hooked into your ear connect to the radio and have the push-to-talk go to your sleeve so you have to hook it onto your shirt at chest level |
Question: | how long is the cord from the clip to the push to talk button |
Answer: | yes they are very nice and better if you have to be in a public place and prefer conversations to be more private. So instead of pushing a button to talk on the walkie talkie you have an earpiece and a clip on piece that you press a button and talk into. We use them for church security so there might be 6-8 people who have them and we set them all to the same channel. When one speaks all the radios hear them. We have had to change channels sometimes to avoid interference but all radios in the building can hear via this earpiece adaptor. We love them. |
Question: | DO these let only you here the voice from the other walkie talkie |
Answer: | I'm not exactly sure on the size in mm. But I can tell you the one pin is the exact size of a standard earbud (headphone) set for like a MP3 Player, computer headphone jack, etc. |
Question: | There are dual pin connectors, but it doesn't specify the sizes. Is one of them a standard 3.5 mm pin that will fit in a cell phone |
Answer: | I don't believe so. I think it only fits Kenwood and Baofeng radios. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I get channel 5.0 with this unit |
Answer: | Simple answer is yes. The room where I installed my fan was actually a converted attic space where the clearance was 7'-6". Hunter provides 2 sections of connector pipe; one for normal ceilings and one for less clearance. I used the shorter pipe. Perfect clearance. You should have no problems. |
Question: | how many wats |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | What is the radio type? cb, vhf, frs, gmrs |
Answer: | Yes it does and I didn't even realize till you asked that question ! Thank you I learned something new about the fan |
Question: | the picture shows two radios, does the order come with two or one |
Answer: | Yes. It's motor delivers ultra-powerful air movement with quiet performance indeed.I would recommed the factory to substitute the three 60w candelabra bulbs by LED lamps. |
