User questions & answers
Question: | I can only hit two where I live. Is the extra 3 watts going to gain any range |
Answer: | ANTENNA ANTENNA ANTENNA The extra watts will do less to improve transmission and reception than a quality antenna. As others have said, to increase your signal strength at the receiving radio by one S unit you have to quadruple the power output. The difference between the UV-5R standard radio and the "8 watt" "high power" radios is only a doubling of power. If you are on the move use the Nagoya 771 antenna (and watch you don't poke out your eye). If you are stationary, a homebrew 2 meter dipole or the Ed Fong antenna will significantly improve your transmission and reception. Amateur Extra HAM instructor VP local HAM club |
Question: | what kind of range can I expect |
Answer: | With the included antenna, you will get about 10 kilometers on open area land. About 5 kilometers in suburban settings. In urban settings, aabout a kilometer or two. In a boat, a bit further than 10kilometers. With the Nagoya extended antenna, you can make 20 kilometers, more or less, on open ground. However, use an external antenna on the roof of a building and you can double that range! Power does increase range. But, antenna increases range far more than more power. |
Question: | I am trying to receive frequencies in the 800mhz range but it will not allow me to enter |
Answer: | You can program these for whatever frequencies you want by downloading CHIRP and modifying the radio drivers with a text editor... Then just change the frequency range to 900mhz or whatever you want... I would not suggest trying to transmit at those frequencies but people have had some success with receiving frequencies out of band that way... You may also want to try an RF downconverter if you would rather go the hardware way instead of the software way... More info at http://www.brickolore.com/2012/05/baofeng-uv-5r-extreme-receive.html |
Question: | Which frequencies will I be required to become licensed for? How do I know which repeaters I might use and their associated membership fees? Thank you |
Answer: | You cannot use this radio in any unlicensed frequency. It is not type accepted for any radio service and is therefore illegal to sell, advertise, market, or ship to anywhere in the US. It is probably legal to use in a Ham band if you have a ham license. Ham licenses come with some great benefits, such as being able to use un-aproved radios, it is well worth the effort to get one. BTW, I have two of these radios. They work about as well as a UV-5R, of which they are a derivative They just over-powered a 5 watt radio to make it spit out 8 watts. It gets you VERY little extra distance and the transmission is really really dirty. It blows all over the 2 meter bands. If you want to see what the FCC does to out of service marketing Google "FCC DA-18-980A1". This radio has no legal use in the US except on the ham bands by hams. It is very illegal to use for MURS and FRS, and not even OK for FMRS. It transmits so dirty it is pretty obvious to anyone with a good HR rig with a display or an FCC truck that you are using a BF-F8HP. It's got a rather unique signal signature. If you want a Baofeng get one of these. They are all certified part 90 which makes them legal to sell and ship, and no questions about using them for Ham use. And get a ham license, it really opens up your options. User questions & answers
Question: | Can even the frs work on hp |
Answer: | From page 63 of the UV-82HP manual available online. "You may be tempted to use FRS, GMRS, MURS (in the USA) or PMR446 (in Europe) frequencies. Do note however that there are restrictions on these bands that make this transceiver ILLEGAL for use" Don't follow the advice, based on personal opinions of those who know little about radio communications and even less about the law. |
Question: | can alert tones from fire and ems be programed into this radio |
Answer: | When fire and ems transmit they automatically send out a tone before they start talking. You can look up the RadioReference dot com website (click Databases) and it will give you the frequencies for fire and ems by state. Texas gives the tones before broadcasting the audio. I would assume the rest of the country does the same. It may be the law to broadcast tones, but not sure of other states. Try it and see. I use a UV-82hp and the tones are automatic. |
Question: | Can you switch the backlight on and off manually? the automatic on/off drives me crazy(er |
Answer: | Using CHIRP, you can extend the backlight time out. |
Question: | Which would you recommend more, this uv-82hp or the bf-f8hp |
Answer: | I own both. Offhand I prefer the feel of the UV-82HP. Same with the keypad The BF-F8HP feels "overstuffed". Advantage of the UV-82HP is the Dual PTT - Toggle up tor transmit on A and toggle down to transmit on B. Very nice for dual channel use Disadvantage of the UV-82HP - MUST reboot to change between channel and VFO mode. I don't do that much - but it's annoying. Menus pretty much the same. I have become the "radio man" for our Boy Scout Camporees - and the BF-F8HP has a very nice bulk charger available. One base 6 or 8 radios. For a "field deployment" one power and one base sure beats 6 to 8 bases, cables, power warts. For that more than anything I've been procuring more BF-F8HP and that's what the staff is familiar with. I sure wish there was a bulk charger base for the UV-82HP. |
Product features
BaoFeng UV-82HP
The UV-82HP is the second generation of the classic UV-82 Series. Some new features found in the UV-82HP are the three selectable power levels (Low - 1 watt, Medium - 5 watt, High- 7/8 watt ) allowing for a high-output of up to eight watts.
What Makes it Unique?
It has 3 Power Levels (1, 5, 7/8 watt).
VFO/ MR (Frequency Mode) can be locked via software.
The Dual Push-to-Talk Switch can be synchronized via software to simplify operation of the radio.
A new 80 Page In-Depth User's Guide.
It includes the High Gain V-85 Antenna to Optimize Performance.
Full Accessory Compatibility with all UV-82 accessories.
Customize Your Operation With Channels, Programmable Buttons, And More.
You can program your UV-82HP exactly how you want it. There are 128 programmable memory channels. You can add or remove channels from scanning list using the free computer software. You can give channels alphanumeric names, using a computer. The radio has 3 power levels (8 watt maximum), allowing you to choose how far you can communicate.
Dual or Single Push-to-Talk Selectable
The UV-82 Series come with a dual push-to-talk button. The dual PTT allows you to transmit on two frequencies by the use of the rocker push-to-talk switch. By pressing 'up' you can transmit on 'Frequency A' and by pushing down you can transmit on 'Frequency B'.
Frequency A or B can also be used as a scanner of channels, frequencies, CTCSS and DTS tones.
Note: The BaoFeng UV-82HP allows you to synchronize the PTT button to re-enable a single Push-to-Talk switch. This simplifies the use for those who require only one frequency to talk on.
See the Full Comparison Chart
Click the image to zoom and compare the UV-82HP to other BaoFeng Models.
The UV-82HP is a major update to the previous UV-82 model with firmware, hardware, and even packing upgrades.
There are a variety of BaoFengs models in existence, but generally no differences exist. Some models are even re-manufactured units.
No matter the model number BaoFeng radios are based on one of these chipsets.
The UV-82HP is a upgrade from the UV-82 and UV-5R series with the addition of features, power levels, and the updated chipset revision that supports the High Power.
Versatile Radio
The UV-82HP also includes: External Accessory Compatibility, FM Radio, Flashlight, Emergency Alarm.
The UV-82HP has one built-in receiver but can 'watch' two channels/frequencies (semi duplex). The UV-82HP will monitor both frequencies giving priority to the first station to receive an incoming call.
The UV-82HP supports CTCSS, DCS, and DTMF calling methods. Tone calling (private line) is required by most repeater applications and the UV-82HP supports the latest standards.
The UV-82HP can send DTMF tones. This allows for sending ANI (Caller ID) or remote commands that require DTMF tones.
The UV-82HP is able to Transmit on Narrowband (12.5kHz) and Wideband (25kHz).
BaoFeng UV-82 Series Radio
The UV-82 series is BaoFeng's most commercialized radio series. Compared to the UV-5R and other previous series; the UV-82 radios come with a much louder speaker (1 watt), while other current BaoFeng radios use a 700mW speaker.
The UV-82 series radios also have a more solid case that employ larger buttons as well compared to the previous BaoFeng series. The UV-82HP uses the latest BaoFeng chipset and PCB board that outperforms the range, accuracy, and output of the previous BaoFeng chipsets.
It is not simply a remake but a new radio from the ground up.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this radio do am tx/rx in 26 to 30mhz |
Answer: | can receive AM will not Tramsmit |
Question: | I been using a th-7800 now i just got the th-9800 and my computer sees the programing dongle/cable but it wont read or write and i see its on usb |
Answer: | It depends on how your programming the radio. are you using the factory software, did you get RT systems software which I highly recommend that's worth the money, or are you using chirp? and some instances too you're going to have trouble with your windows driver it depends on what version of Windows you're using. Anyway you probably just have to change your comport settings which some of the software variations let you choose. Or look into your driver because you might have some driver issues |
Question: | Tx in usb...? or only fm |
Answer: | This radio is strictly an FM radio, at least as far as transmitting. It will transmit on the 6 meter, 10 meter, 2 meter, and 70 cm bands, but again, only in FM. It may receive AM on the aircraft bands, but I can't confirm this as both of the CMX138 audio chips in my radio have failed. |
Question: | Can anyone confirm this radio can work 6meters? I just purchased this unit, programmed with chirp and th9800d software and the radio only does |
Answer: | The radio works on 6 meters and 10 meters, FM only, and as mentioned in another answer, only the left side of the radio can be used for those bands. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it the same as a ham radio |
Answer: | Yes. 2 meter. |
Question: | Does it have built-in SWR meter |
Answer: | It does NOT have an SWR meter. Do the people that answered "yes" even know what an SWR meter is??? It has a bar graph "S" meter, but not an SWR meter. |
Question: | this model have repeater function?? beacuse only in USA Version come whit it |
Answer: | The IC-2300H comes with an "Automatic repeater function (USA version only)", but this is NOT actually a repeater. When using this radio to communicate through a repeater, the transmit frequency is shifted up or down from the receive frequency automatically. What this function does is automatically set the duplex offset frequency. Otherwise you would have to set this manually when using the radio with a repeater. |
Question: | Does it have a s-meter |
Answer: | Yes |

FT-991A HF/50/140/430MHz All-Mode “Field Gear” Transceiver
The FT-991A is the next-generation of the widely popular FT-991. Like its predecessor, the FT-991A is creatively designed to fit into a very compact (W9.0” xH3.2” x D9.3”) rugged case and will deliver up to 100 Watts solid output power (50 Watts on 140/430MHz) on SSB, CW, AM, FM, Packet and C4FM Digital on the popular HF/50/140/430MHz bands.
In keeping with the spirit of the rich performance of the FT-991, the new FT-991A provides two new stimulating and useful advanced features - a Real-time Spectrum Scope and a Multi-Color Waterfall Display.
The new dynamic real-time spectrum scope gives radio operators the ability to graphically view the location of signals on the band while they listen to the received audio allowing them to quickly move to the desired signal. The strength of signals on the band can readily be seen on the Multi-color waterfall display. Chronological order color differentiation allows operators to easily recognize weak signals at a glance; signals that might otherwise be missed on the spectrum scope.
These additional exciting functions enable more efficient and satisfying operating time while making important contacts on the crowded HF and 6 meter bands. We believe that the new FT-991A will be widely accepted as an ideal field gear rig by the majority of the ham radio operators who want to enjoy reliable and flawless communication on all the HF and V/UHF bands with just one radio.
- Dynamic Real-Time Spectrum Scope *NEW!
- Multi-Color Waterfall Display *NEW!
- 160 Meters through 70 Centimeters - SSB/CW/FM/C4FM Digital/AM
- 100 Watts (2 Meter / 70 Centimeter: 50 Watts) of Solid Output Power Performance
- 3.5 inch TFT Full-Color Touch Panel Operation for Superior Operability and Visibility

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the UV-5X3 compatible with the 2800mAh extended battery for the UV-5R? that is, does it PHYSICALLY fit without problems unlike some other models |
Answer: | This is not a digital scanner. It works on analog trunk systems. I used mine on NJ State Police, which is trunked as well as an analog system. |
Question: | What replacement batteries are available for this radio, I would like to have a spare. Is there a aaa battery option for the uv-5x |
Answer: | Yes, if your local police is not using a digital mode, this scanner will get it. Many Highway Patrols and State Police agencies, as well as Sheriffs Departments are still using analog. Some are using Digital but are still transmitting on their old analog channels. However, everything is changing quickly. So what is on analog today may be digital soon, And some agencies may still take a few years to change over. |
Question: | What is the fcc id number |
Answer: | No this scanner will not scan 1300 GHz. It stops at 1300, but it will not scan that frequency band. |
Question: | How many miles far away can be used from other |
Answer: | The Antenna Connection is a BNC Male connection, accepting almost any BNC Female antenna Coax+Connector.Almost any 'Scanner' Antenna you find will have the proper Connection. |
Product features
Display Synchronization
An exciting, new feature on the UV‑5X3 takes full advantage of the LCD's dual line display. In the past the dual display allowed you to monitor two different frequencies at once. Unfortunately, for user's that only wanted to monitor a single channel, the secondary line was of no use... until the UV‑5X3!
The UV‑5X3 allows users, who want to display the most information at once, to synchronize the display. This allows the LCD to show both the channel's frequency and channel name simultaneously. Display synchronization allows the user to maximize the available information seen at a glance!
Modify the Scanning List
A brand new menu allows for one of the biggest conveniences while scanning: Modifying the Scanning List!
Before the UV‑5X3, you couldn't manage the channel scan list without a computer. The brand new menu in the UV‑5X3 allows you to easily add and remove channels from the scanning list. Have a nuicanse channel that you want removed from the scan list? You no longer need to go home to a computer to remove it: A simple menu allows you modify your channel scan list without a computer
Channel Mode Modifications
The UV‑5X3 comes out of the rut that all other UV‑5 series radios are stuck in. The UV‑5X3, built with the amateur radio operator in mind, allows channel modifications on-the-fly.
Previously and on other current UV‑5 models, you were forced to delete a channel and then recreate it from scratch if you wanted to alter any settings.
The UV‑5X3 allows common edits to the channels: Such as adding, changing, or removing the privacy tones (CTCSS & DCS); or changing the power level. You no longer have to delete and recreate the channel over simple channel modifications.
Scan a Frequency Range
Scanning in frequency mode, just became practical! Exclusively on the BTECH UV‑5X3: You are able to scan through a specific frequency range.
Scanning frequencies before the UV‑5X3 required the user to scan the full frequency band they were using. This was not practical if you only wanted to watch for activity on a particular section of the band (such as only 222-225MHz in the above pictured example). The UV‑5X3 will scan at the frequency step you select in menu, which allows you to scan by increments from 2.5 to 50KHz. You can now scan through a fine tuned portion of the receiving band without having to wait and scan the whole band!

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this radio have low power settings |
Answer: | There is a RF Gain and RF Power |
Question: | Will the export mod allow 11 meter with SSB |
Answer: | Yes, I am aham and I go back and forth between 10 and 11 meters AM, FM and SSB, with no problems at all. It takes gime to learn how to use all tghe features of this radio, but I am extremely pleased with it. Just be sure to use a proper power supply, good quality coax and connectors, and a GOID antenna. |
Question: | Do you need a license on shortwave car radios |
Answer: | One person below claimed this is a "CB Radio". That claim is not accurate. This radio, unmodified, operates in the 10 meter and 12 meter bands, which requires a General Class, amateur license to fully operate. It is a genuine "Ameteur Radio", not a CB. CB, ie Citizen's Band, is the 11 meter channelized band, does not require a license to operate, and is limited to 20 watts. This radio exceeds output limitations for Citizen's band, and is not legal to operate on 11 meter (CB) even if you are licensed! One can modify this radio to also operate in the 11 meter frequencies, but this would violate the FCC's type-classification for which this radio is certified. In other words, it would be illegal, and could result in a rather hefty fine. Licensed Hams should take note: having an amateur license does not confer any additional privileges on the Citizen's Band. Your best bet is to just get your ham license. Reasonably intelligent people can use the free study guides for 2-3 weeks, and get their General license for about $15-$30 (and it's good for 10 years). If you don't have the inclination to do that, just get a CB. |
Question: | So, just to be sure, this not a CB Radio |
Answer: | I just got mine. It covers all of 12 meter amateur radio band and all of 10 meter amateur radio band. I found no OFCOM CB channels in it. It has a great receive for 12 and 10 meters. I would not mind hearing 11meter CB from it. But it probably would not transmit on the 11 meter CB band. Besides, I have a very old CB in my Jeep and I rarely hear anybody. If there is a reprogramming you can do to bring 11 meters receive to the radio, I do not think it is worth it. It does have a data port. Perhaps that is the answer. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this the radio to use ladd 1,2,3,4,. up in northern bc,albt. or alaska |
Answer: | 154.10000 - ladd 1, 158.94000 - ladd 2, 154.32500 - ladd 3, and 173.37000 ladd 4 can all be transmitted and received on Anytone At-778UV. Frequency's on radio are between Uhf 400-490 and VHF 136-174 MHz. Easy-peazy. |
Question: | Why do these radios NOT include the programming cable, which is necessary to use this equipment |
Answer: | I am unsure if this is a real question or a criticism. I would rather these companies include the cable too but the radio can be programmed (configured) through the front panel buttons. Another reason they don't include the cable with each radio is you might already have a cable for that radio. For example, I purchased a $200 AT-5888 from AnyTone which came with a programming cable. When I purchased the AT-778uv, it did not but I already had the cable from the AT-5888 which is the same cable. In closing I'll say in HAM radio some amateurs like to build their own stuff. Building radio programming cables can be fun. I've made a few., I've made a couple AnyTone cables as well even though I already had a factory cable. Beware that the cable schematics you may find on the Internet may work for the AT-5888 but NOT work with the AT-788uv due to a missing signal diode. Enjoy. |
Question: | will it scan both band simultaneously |
Answer: | It has dual stby meaning you can monitor both bands simultaneously. If you create a memory list it will scan your memory list regardless of what band it is in. |
Question: | What is the current draw at full power 25 watts |
Answer: | You can estimate the max transmit draw on a 12V radio by multiplying the power output by 2. For example, this radio has a 25W output, so 2x25W = 50W. Divided by 12V gives you about 4.2A. This is in the ballpark. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this model compatible uv-5r 3800 mah and 3600 mah extended batteries like the uv-5r v2+ is |
Answer: | Yes it is.....and the 12V battery eliminator for the car fits as well. |
Question: | Does this model truly have better selectivity (as stated) than the the other Baofeng radios. This is always the weak spot in these radios |
Answer: | I can't tell you about any other Baofeng radios, but I can tell you that the front end is stronger than my Yaesu FT811. I was blown away with the receive when I first turned it on. It does have a little intermod when you get around hospitals or other large transmitters. No problems in the Ham Shack ! I run 15,20,40, and 80 meters without any problems. Very easy to program when you get the hang of it. I personally use "Chirp" to program my U-5R5. I love it !! WD8CNQ |
Question: | How does this radio's range compare to a standard set of motorola or midland two-ways while using it as a two way radio |
Answer: | Range between 2 of these radios using stock antennas is about 2.5 to 3 miles. But upgrade the antennas to 15" whips and you can get up to 7 miles. Beyond 7 miles the curvature of the earth gets in the way and you will need to gain elevation to increase range. "Height is might" so get the radios as high as possible to achieve max range. My personal best is 17.9 miles from a hill top. |
Question: | Is this a ham or a reqular 2 way |
Answer: | My advice to you is to search on Amazon for "FRS radio" and buy one of those. They are very easy to use. Do not transmit on this radio unless you have a license. You can be fined up to $10,000 for doing that illegal activity. Go to this URL to find out how to get a license. http://www.arrl.org/licensing-education-training |

FAQ:what kind of range can I expect?
- It depends on the terrain around you as VHF/UHF is generally line of sight, But with this 5 watts Walkie Talkie ,it is a solid 2-3 miles in a city (UHF is best in congested areas), 5-7 miles in low hilly/forested terrain and up to 20-25 miles mountain top to mountain top (line of sight). A good aftermarket longer antenna from a Ham radio store will add to the performance.

User questions & answers
Question: | When using as a crossband repeater am I able to change the frequency/channel remotely via the HT allowing me to move from one repeater to another |
Answer: | Yes, as long as your are using a compatible Kenwood HT (not sure which Kenwood HT's are considered "compatible"). Page 85 of the owner's manual describes how to remotely control they TM-V71A. |
Question: | Is it possible to program a memory channel to have a cross band split? As in when I key the mic it transmits on UHF, but it receives on VHF |
Answer: | Search your manual but I don't think so. You can program anything that has to do with a specific station/repeater into a memory channel, however the function of the radio acting as a repeater is a radio function, not a memory "channel" option. |
Question: | Does the mic plug into the faceplate or the main unit? If main unit, how do you run the mic? Thanks |
Answer: | Microphone does not plug into the faceplate. If you use remote cable for faceplate, your mic will be running from the main unit, not the remote faceplate. |
Question: | Is the progamming cable/software included? If not how much |
Answer: | Programming cable/software is not included. We recommend the RT Systems KRS-V71 programming kit. This item is usually listed on Amazon, but currently out of stock. Should be available in 1 to 2 weeks. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will i be able to program frequencies using chirp software |
Answer: | Sure, you can, CHIRP recognizes this model as BF-F8HP as the driver is the same. |
Question: | Will this be sufficient to contact draw bridges while aboard our sailboat |
Answer: | I think it will as long as they broadcast on UHF or VHF. It works in some state parks to contact the ranger stations. That is the best I can answer not 100% sure. |
Question: | Can this unit be setup like a scanner and monitor police and fire band or frequencies |
Answer: | It just depends on whether or not your Police/fire/EMS agency operates on the frequencies covered by this radio or not. Many do. Many have also moved over to digital systems. Near my house, the county Sheriff's dispatch and several fire/ems outfits do as well. In the neighboring county, they have moved to digital and I cannot monitor them with this radio. Because this radio covers a wide swath of amateur and professional VHF and UHF bands, you can probably pick up some area businesses, farms, municipalities, railroads, schools, utilities etc. Listings are available online. |
Question: | How long does one battery last |
Answer: | I've run them 16 hrs straight between charging in temps below 32 degrees. |

Question: | Whats the different between this device and the yaesu ft-2900r |
Answer: | This is the newer updated version of the discontinued FT-2900R . The main difference is this unit has a higher output power of 80 Watts. |
