User questions & answers
Question: | With the supplied antenna and using it in suburbia (trees, houses, flat topography) what range can I expect on 5W transmit |
Answer: | Probably not anytime soon, as the GT-3 case is different than the UV-5R. This "new" radio is better looking (to some) than the UV-5R, but as others have already mentioned, it's basically a re-worked UV-5R at heart at a much higher price. |
Question: | Is this radio water resistant |
Answer: | Here are a few sites that I use for my radios. The first link has firmware. The second is about "Chirp" one of my favorite for channel programing. You will need a program cable to use in updating or programming. Program cable: https://www.amazon.com/Baofeng-Programming-Cable-BAOFENG-BF-888S/dp/B00CP0I474/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1471476188&sr=8-1&keywords=baofeng+programming+cable Firmware: http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/UV5R-Software.phpChirp: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chNKMlxjOr8https://baofengtech.com/download |
Question: | Is this radio for amateurs |
Answer: | The base has a raised ring around it, so my Nagoya antenna from my UV-5R will not fit. I have a high gain MFJ-1717s antenna that fits snugly inside the raised ring and performs very well. |
Question: | can this radio recieve and transmit on the murs channels |
Answer: | Yes it will. You have 7 characters just like the UV-5R series. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the ftm-300dr announce id during crossband repeat |
Answer: | the power supply puts out 13.5 vdc at 24 amps |
Question: | Is the face waterproof. so i can mount it on my motorcycle |
Answer: | They are captive and do not unscrew completely. Recommend that a spade connector if not using a plug |
Question: | Does this radio transmit SSB |
Answer: | 120vac Input is needed |
Question: | Can you broadcast on gmrs |
Answer: | Typically a transceiver will operate at plus or minus 10% of nominal voltage. So - 0.2 volts should be no problem. Check your rig's specifications. Also the power supply voltage may drop under load. The specification for this power supply states a variation of 7%. |
Question: | Will this work for the Yaesu FT-450d |
Answer: | +1 for 2_3 miles line of site. Better with another antenna maybe a real diamond whip, I can hit repeaters 9 miles away with it. I live across the street from a large lake so keep that in mind. |
Question: | Do the 25a connectors unscrew completely, or are they "locked", prohibting an eyelet type connection like some cheaper PS |
Answer: | From it's advertised description of dust and water resistance, it is protected against: Splashing of water Water splashing against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effect, utilizing either: a) an oscillating fixture, or b) A spray nozzle with no shield. Test a) is conducted for 10 minutes. Test b) is conducted (without shield) for 5 minutes minimum. Oscillating tube: Test duration: 10 minutes, or spray nozzle (same as IPX3 spray nozzle with the shield removed) So, don't hit it with a fire hose, but if your lawn sprinkler hits it, you should be ok. |
Question: | What input voltage is needed |
Answer: | If you mean HAM, yes. To operate it you have to be an FCC licensed operator with at least a Technician license (HAM). You can listen unlicensed but will likely have a van bristling with antennas show up if you use it illegally. It operates on 2 meter & 70 cm bands. Look around for videos or second-party instructions on programming. There are 2 guides included and you need the not very easy to use procedures in both to tune the radio and to store settings to channels. It's a good radio. |
Question: | I bought a radio and in the manual said this was the required power supply for it but it also says it needs atlest 13.8vDc but this is saying 13.6v |
Answer: | - Turn radio off - Press and hold PTT and Tcall (under PTT) - Turn back on - Release PTT and Tcall - Enter 62406665 - The radio will reboot Congrats. TX is explained and MURS, GMRS, will TX. Note: This is an amateur (Part 97) radio and isn’t Part 95 Type Accepted, so unless it’s an emergency, it’s illegal to actually TX on MURS, GMRS. This is for educational purposes only. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hi, can you provide a 220v charger |
Answer: | You of course need to have a valid amateur radio license to use this radio. Provided that you and your family member are both licensed you could use this in pdn mode or using the wires x system to a node to talk to any other node in the world. |
Question: | Do you need some kind of license to use this radio |
Answer: | The minimum channel spacing depends upon what frequency (or band) you are using. Almost every ARRL book has a frequency table, where you can sort it out. |
Question: | To charge this radio, do you have to plug the cord into the radio or does it have a charging tray that the whole radio fits into |
Answer: | Carl is correct. VERY few (if any) HTs will Tx/Rx on SSB. I own this HT (and others). I have yet to find an HT which will even attempt SSB. This is a great radio. So is the Kenwood TH-D74. However, even the Kenwood (which is a tri-band radio) will not do SSB Tx - only Rx. So, the short answer to your question is, "No". |
Question: | what all comes with the radio |
Answer: | I ordered two in the event they were duplicates. 1 worked and 1 didn’t - upon closer inspection, and my option this is not an apple product |

Yaesu MLS-100 Speakers are essential equipment for an top-notch installation. These speakers feature an all black plastic chassis and grill and black metal mounting bracket. The attached 6 ft. 6 in. cable has the mono miniature plug, 3.5 mm size that connects to the external speaker jack of most transceivers. User questions & answers
Question: | Is this a 4 ohm or 8 ohm speaker |
Answer: | If that is the one that comes with the radio, yesI use the stock AC charger module |
Question: | Looking for a speaker to go with a yaesu 450d same height as the radio some said this speaker is good |
Answer: | Yes it does have overcharge protection and yes you can leave the battery in the charger as long as the battery is fully charged. . |
Question: | I need an extension cable whats the part numb |
Answer: | I think it has trouble charging while operating. You also need to watch out for a design flaw. The middle contact is a feedback to the charging circuit to determine if the radio is fully charged. It is a direct line to the gate of an ESD sensitive MOSFET. IF the green light is always on when you insert your HT, then the MOSFET may have failed. You will need to replace it and insert a 100M Ohm resistor into that circuit to protect the MOSFET from ESD. I have two of these charges and I have done this with both. Look up CD-41 MOSFET fix on YouTube for the details. |
Question: | Where was this speaker made |
Answer: | Yes the VX-8DR radio with FNB-102Li battery will fit into this charger just fine. Batteries can also be charged in this charger while off the radio. |
