12 best home subwoofers
Home subwoofers are an essential component of a home audio system, especially if you want to enhance the low-frequency performance of your music or home theater setup. These devices are designed to reproduce deep bass frequencies, adding richness and depth to your audio experience. Here are some key points about home subwoofers:
Purpose: Subwoofers are primarily responsible for reproducing low-frequency sounds, typically below 100Hz. This includes bass instruments, deep movie explosions, and the rumble of a thunderstorm.
Placement: Subwoofers are typically placed on the floor, as low-frequency sound waves are omnidirectional and less affected by room reflections. The optimal placement may vary depending on your room's acoustics and your listening preferences.
Types: There are two main types of home subwoofers:
- Powered (Active) Subwoofers: These have built-in amplifiers and can be connected directly to your audio source or AV receiver. They are easier to set up and offer more control over the bass output.
- Passive (Unpowered) Subwoofers: These require an external amplifier to power them. They are less common in modern home audio setups.
Size: Subwoofers come in various sizes, with the most common sizes being 8 inches, 10 inches, 12 inches, and 15 inches. The size of the subwoofer can significantly impact its ability to reproduce deep bass frequencies.Larger subs generally produce deeper and more powerful bass.
Frequency Response: The frequency response of a subwoofer indicates the range of frequencies it can reproduce. Look for a subwoofer with a low-frequency response that matches your audio needs.
Crossover: Subwoofers are often equipped with a crossover that determines which frequencies are sent to the subwoofer and which are sent to the main speakers. This helps prevent overlap and ensures a balanced sound.
Wattage: The power rating of a subwoofer's amplifier (in watts) affects its output capability. A higher wattage generally means a more powerful bass response.
Enclosure Type: Subwoofers come in different enclosure types, including sealed, ported, and bandpass. Each type has its own characteristics, affecting the quality and quantity of bass produced.
Room Acoustics: The acoustics of your room, including its size and layout, can significantly impact the performance of a subwoofer. Experimenting with placement and settings may be necessary to achieve optimal sound.
Integration: To achieve the best sound, it's important to integrate your subwoofer seamlessly with your bookshelf speakers or main speakers. This involves configuring the crossover settings on your AV receiver or amplifier to ensure a smooth transition between the subwoofer and other speakers.
Budget: Subwoofers come in a wide range of price points. It's essential to consider your budget and desired audio quality when choosing a subwoofer.
Brand and Model: There are many reputable brands that manufacture high-quality home subwoofers. Reading reviews and seeking recommendations can help you make an informed decision.
In summary, home subwoofers are crucial for enhancing the low-frequency performance of your home audio or home theater system. The choice of subwoofer depends on your room size, budget, and specific audio preferences, and it should be integrated carefully with your existing speakers for the best overall sound experience.

User questions & answers
Question: | What in your opinion is the best power setting for normal use, "on" or "auto" for this unit |
Answer: | I would say depends if you use the item everyday/constantly as your sound for your surround. Or if you use surround/theater occasionally. If the latter I would use `on/off` , if you use it often or primarily the auto would be the way to go in my opinion. Plus is the sub easy to get to? Auto is great if its behind furniture or out of reach, etc. |
Question: | Does this speaker have a volume control? Thanks |
Answer: | Just to clarify something a previous reviewer stated: "Note: If you are using a Sub out/LFE connection from your receiver turn the Low Pass all the way up. " This does not apply to receivers with which you can specify the low-pass cutover frequency. For example, my modest Onkyo receiver has cutover settings of 80/100/120 HZ for the LFE/Sub output. If you have this option, you should consult your main speaker's manual for suggested low-pass settings or simply tune them by ear. For my setup, 120 HZ was both the recommended and best-sounding cutover frequency. 160 HZ was a little muddy :) |
Question: | Can this sub be added to a Vizio 2.0 sound bar, for small to medium-sized HDTV's? If not, what should I get? For TV/Games/Music |
Answer: | Like John, I too have a Vizio 2.0 sound bar and this pairs very well. I have a small theater room (10 x 20) and this one 10" fills the room. This sub is the best bang for the buck you can get. |
Question: | Do I need a Y-adpater? A sound tech told me one sub wire would do the trick and just plug it into the L and ignore the R. Is this true |
Answer: | Initially, used a one wire connection. Sounded OK, but .... Got a "Y" connector, attached at the rear of the amp, ran L & R wires to the PSW10: sounds amazing now and very adjustable. Need to get the PSW12 to get a one wire connection. Am very satisfied with this sub and would recommend it. Used in a 12' X 20' room, front/back/center and now the sub. Tom |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i run 2 fron 1 reciever and 1 from another receiver in a different room without interference |
Answer: | I wish I could help you I don't know I have mine in the same room |
Question: | Is roberts lp an authorized dealer? they are not listed on the klipsh web page |
Answer: | Yes, Roberts LP is an authorized dealer. |
Question: | will this pair with a samsung sound bar, specifically the HW-MS650 or are the wireless subs dedicated by manufacturer |
Answer: | IT WILL RUN SEPERATE,BUT IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE SOUND BAR, I HAVE SAME SETUP, AND THE WIRELESS TRANSMITTER, IS A GREAT FEATURE. THE WIRELESS TRANSMITTER , PLUGS INTO A OUTLET, THEN SENDS THE AUDIO OUT, ON BACK OF TV, OR ACCESSORIES, TO THE SUBWOOFER. IT DOES NOT INTERFERE WITH ANYTHING ELSE , BUT SIMPLY REPLACES, BIG BULKY WIRES. |
Question: | Will owning this sub make me more attractive |
Answer: | Absolutely. You may even lose a few of those extra pounds. After owning this sub for a year, my blood pressure has dropped back to normal. I was able to get off of the cholesterol medication as well, because the depth of bass shatters all of that ugly body fat and speeds up your body's metabolism to eliminate it from your system. The only downside so far is the extra money I'm having to spend on Afflicted tees and bedazzled jeans. Oh... and I also had to start wearing larger condoms, so there's that. Overall worth every penny. |

Question: | Pictures for the 15" sub doesn't look right. Does anyone know if the pictures are legit |
Answer: | You are correct. As of the time of this response, the picture for the 15" model is actually the picture of the 6.5" model. The correct picture can be found on Acoustic Audio's website at http://www.acousticaudio.net/psw15.html. |
Question: | I currently have a onkyo receiver hooked to a 5.1 surround by LG..my sub is not aux hookup only speaker cable so i must get a powered sub. Would this |
Answer: | Yes you can use the sub woofer with your receiver. |
Question: | Does it have a three prong power plug that includes a ground connection |
Answer: | No, it's just a duel plug, and no ground connection. Hope that helps. For such a small sub it hits pretty good. I have it set up in my bedroom 2 front speakers and it, and the quality is great. |
Question: | I just got this today and was hoping to hook it up to the aux output of my stereo. no sound. do i have to use speaker input instead |
Answer: | Make sure that your stereo is actually sending signal through your auxiliary outputs. Then make sure that your gain knob is turned up. This amplifies the incoming signal. If you still aren't getting any sound, you could try connecting a live speaker cable to the high level in. The signal will be converted to low frequency. You could use your Speaker B output on your stereo to do this. Just make sure that the B speakers are on on your stereo as well. Also make sure your subwoofer is plugged in and turned on, classic troubleshooting. |

Product description
This is an 8-Inch powered subwoofer capable of producing 60 watts (RMS) output. The subwoofer has a frequency response range of 50 to 250 Hz with a lowpass crossover filter, which can be adjusted from 50 to 150 Hz. Gain and frequency knobs on the control panel allow you to adjust the crossover filter and the power output for the optimum blend and balance of bass output with your stereo or surround speakers. The subwoofer has multiple input options, which allow it to be used with any existing stereo or 5.1 (or greater) amplifier system. For each input there is a corresponding output. High-level inputs accept a full-range signal from the amplifier's stereo speaker outputs. When connecting the unit as part of a 5.1 system, these would be taken off the Front Left and Front Right outputs in parallel to the standard pair of front speakers. The subwoofer provides its own power and includes impedance matching circuitry, so this will not reduce the power output to the front speakers or affect the overall impedance load on the amplifier. Additionally, the subwoofer has a set of right/left Line Level inputs. If using a standard stereo system, without a special subwoofer output, you can connect these to the left and right line level outputs on the amp. The subwoofer will then combine the signals to process the mono bass signal it needs to drive the speaker. If you are using an amplifier with a single mono subwoofer line level output, simply use an RCA -Inch-Inch cable to split the output and send it to the two line level inputs on the subwoofer. The subwoofer is housed in an attractive black wood cabinet that measures 13.75-Inch x 11.75-Inch x 11.75-Inch (H x W x D). The driver and a 2 3/4-Inch sound port are located on the front, covered by a black cloth speaker grill. Amplifier Power Output: 60 Watts (RMS).

User questions & answers
Question: | Dose it work at 220 volt |
Answer: | It will work. It’s 100-240V |
Question: | Is it support voltage 100~240V |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | is this product working from 220 voltage |
Answer: | It will work. It’s 100-240V |
Question: | What kind of cable do i need to make this work with klipsch the sixes speakers |
Answer: | If this speaker follows the usual Klipsch subwoofer convention, you just need a single cable with RCA/phono/coaxial plugs at both ends. You have to plug it into the jack labeled "L/LFE". If you are sending separate left and right subwoofer signals, then this jack is for the left signal. If you just have one signal, then it treats it as a single LFE signal; that is, like the ".1" part of 5.1 or 7.1 audio. If the jack is simply labeled "L", then you might need an RCA jack to two RCA plugs Y adapter. For a definitive answer, look in the manual, but I suspect that it will handle a common subwoofer signal on the left jack like previous Klipsch subwoofers. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it come with an amp |
Answer: | Yest the amp itself is powered but I unnecessarily power it first with a little Sound appeal 50Wx2 amp I ordered with it also from Amazon that I had previously and it does the job very well, With a couple of small speakers it beats any soundbar or docking speaker. You do not need one. I just have it to plug my phone in. |
Question: | i will be using this sub for 2 channel stereo. Do i run an additional set of speaker wire from my speakers to the high level R&L inputs of the sub |
Answer: | I believe you run the speaker wire from your stere to the high level R&L inputs and the high level outputs speaker wire to the speakers you're using. But I think if you use the RCA red and white plug from your stereo to the subwoofer, u don't need to use the speaker wire. It's one or the other. I haven't been using my subwoofer do to some construction work, but I believe that's how I have it connected. Hope that helps. |
Question: | I want to use this for my rear center speaker. I only have the two speaker wires coming from the receiver. How or can I use this for this purpose |
Answer: | You'll get some really weird effects from a subwoofer at the rear. Generally, you want a subwoofer at the front of the room, best if near the center but not imperative. Bass is somewhat non-directional, but coming from behind will give some very strange effects. You want your subwoofer working acoustically in conjunction with your front R, L and Center speakers. |
Question: | Can a 42" flat screen tv be placed on top of this cabinet? Or better yet, can it be placed under the tv |
Answer: | I would strongly suggest keeping the box and tv separate. This sun is not 'shielded'. A unshielded speaker will cause electromagnetic interference and possibly damage the tv. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why did the price go back up to $129. ? I was going to purchase it at $99. , I wont pay |
Answer: | There are fairly clear instruction included with the unit. If you have a receiver with subwoofer out, just run an RCA cable to the single input on the subwoofer. If you are using just a stereo amplifier, then you'll need to do some additional wiring. Again, the instructions should be clear enough, but basically, wire from the amp outs to the subwoofer and then from your subwoofer to your speakers, and then set the crossover frequency using the subwoofer dial. |
Question: | This subwoofer has hi level ins but no hi level outs in the pictures. How does that work? Run 2 sets of wire from amp? 1 set to sub 1 set to speakers |
Answer: | Yes it is powered. 400 watts, is plenty of power. Excellent sound. Keep it away from the wall a foot or so so it can breathe. |
Question: | Does unit have a lfe connection? i don’t see one from the pics |
Answer: | I adjust as needed, depending on the source. Normally people set it in the middle and use the source (receiver, etc) for adjustment, but my new receiver requires the TV to be on to adjust sound output |
Question: | Hi ,My question is how do i set up my subwoofer |
Answer: | Hi,I know it's been almost a year since you purchased the sub. Don't use any petroleum based product on the rubber surround. It will dry out the rubber. Btw, the rubber will hold up for many years and even longer if you keep sunlight off of it. It being a sub the grill won't harm the sound the way a grill can slightly harm on your main speakers. User questions & answers
Question: | Is this a powered sub? And how many watts does it have |
Answer: | Hi Mike, I saw your question and wanted to give you the correct answer. The phase switch determines the way the subwoofer cone ( speaker ) reacts. When set to "0" the speaker cone will move in the outward direction at the same time ( phase ) of your main ( left & Right ) speakers. When it is set to "180" the speaker cone of the sub will move inward when your main speakers' cones are moving outward. What this does is cancel out any overlapping frequencies between your main speakers and your subwoofer. When you have overlapping frequencies between your sub and main speakers you will get too much or "bloated" mid bass. Some people prefer "180" because they feel the cancelled out frequencies produces "tighter" and more accurate bass. Other people like more mid bass, so you need to listen to it both ways to find which you prefer. The same thing will happen if you hook up speakers with the speaker wires hooked up with positive & negative swapped ( positive speaker wire in the negative speaker terminal and negative speaker wire in the positive speaker terminal ). Just as an added note, the "Low Pass" filter knob will determine what lower frequencies pass through from your receiver to your subwoofer. The higher the frequency (Hz) the more mid bass the sub outputs and the lower the frequency (Hz) the less mid bass that the subwoofer outputs. You want the subwoofer to optimally blend with your main speakers and that is what the "low pass" filter knob allows you to do. If you are using a surround sound receiver and it is set for Dolby Digital or DTS surround modes receivers will normally automatically crossover the sub output at 80 Hz, so moving the Low pass knob on the sub beyond 80 Hz will have no effect. Now, if you have a surround receiver that utilizes the Audyssey Microphone system to adjust the surround parameters you will want to set the subwoofers low pass knob all the way to the highest frequency. The Adyssey system will determine what frequency blends best with your main speakers. Hope this is helpful. |
Question: | What gain setting do you have your subwoofer set to? I want as much bass as possible from my audio sources (tv, games, movies, etc |
Answer: | Yes, there is base and treble adjustment, as well as Vizio truVolume adjustment. We have two of these, I have been impressed with the richness of the sound on this particular model. |
Question: | Are the surrounds foam or rubber...getting tire of foam |
Answer: | yes , it will right out of the box. |
Question: | What does the phase toggle do? I read ther manual, but it didn't explain it in a manner I could understand |
Answer: | This sound bar uses Bluetooth version 4.1. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do i only need this to play music or do i have to connect some speakers or something |
Answer: | Absolutely yes! Subs only handle low frequencies (boom boom!). All mid, high frequencies are handled by main speakers (either 2 or 5 or more depending on what your receiver can support). And yes, you will need a receiver as well to connect subwoofer and main speakers. |
Question: | does this sub have an auto on/off where it shuts on and off with a signal from turning off/on your reciver |
Answer: | I just checked, the green power light stays on but I believe the sub shuts off automatically to standby just like the satellite speakers once the receiver is powered off. |
Question: | Can I connect this to a pioneer cx |
Answer: | From what I can see online it doesn't look like it has a powered sub woofer port on the back panel. Without that I don't believe it will work. |
Question: | Does this item come with a black grill cover |
Answer: | Yes, it came with black detachable grill cover. FYI, cover made out of fabric type material. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where i can buy 230v version subwoofer online |
Answer: | Do you mean 230v (a single phase of three phase)? Or are you really talking about 240v (home, 2 phases of 120v). Either way I doubt you could find one. |
Question: | Could another second powered sub be connect to this one |
Answer: | Hi Sly_Shadow, Thank you so much for your inquiry. Unfortunately, no. The SA-CS9 115W 10” Active Subwoofer usually connect to an amplifier or AV receiver that supports one or both of the following connections: - MONO OUT jack - MIX OUT jack - SUBWOOFER output jack(s) - SUPER WOOFER output jack(s) • You can also connect an amplifier or AV receiver if it does not have the above-mentioned output jacks to the SPEAKER IN terminals of the subwoofer. I hope this helps! Sincerely, Romeo |
Question: | I have a 1994 sony str-d1015 home theater receiver but with no sub output in the back and i'm wondering how i would go about connecting this woofer to |
Answer: | You would simply run the wires from the left and right output of your receiver to the input of this subwoofer, then conenct both the left and right speakers to the output of the subwoofer. |
Question: | I have a yamaha r-s202, with 2 book shelf speakers in the A channel, can I just run the sub in B |
Answer: | Thanks for your question. If you have a sub with speaker level input you could probably get away with that. World Wide Stereo is 37 years old and a very proud Sony dealer. |
