User questions & answers
Question: | Does anyone know how these speakers compare to the Klipsch KHO-7 Outdoor speakers |
Answer: | I cannot compare the two sets, but I can tell you this: the Definitive Technology AW 6500 has a 10" woofer that reflects back off the mounted wall and gives incredible bass presence to the sound, plus a 6.5 mid-speaker as well as the 1" tweeter. The speakers you want to compare with these has a 5.5 inch woofer and a 1" tweeter. I don't see how the Klipsch can possible compare in fidelity. |
Question: | Am I missing a very important question? How many ohms is this rated |
Answer: | The nominal impedance of the AW6500's which I purchased is 4 to 8 ohms. |
Question: | Do the speaker include mounting brackets or are they a separate item to buy |
Answer: | Mounting brackets are included. |
Question: | the speaker placement within the cabinet looks odd in that the bass is in a different position than the mids/tweets. What is the best way to mount |
Answer: | The large oval cone ("Equipped with one 5.5x10-inch pressure-driven low-bass radiator") on the 'other' side is "Passive" ("pressure driven"), meaning it is not hooked up to anything, but rather 'works' on the compression/expansion of air inside the speaker box from the other cones being actuated (meaning the mid-range cone is 'pushing' it). That factor works OK on larger Transmission Line Design speakers with many active cones in play and proper design, but I doubt it is very relative in this configuration. Just point the mid-range and tweeter side to where you want the audio to focus, and forget about the 'low-bass radiator' (any low bass you think you are hearing is more from the wide-spectrum mid-range). Personally, I would not buy these, as it is more of a gimmick, just like Bose speakers actually suck (predominantly mid-range: "Bose ...no highs, no lows ...Bose"). |

User questions & answers
Question: | How to hook up |
Answer: | Heavy duty wires with screw in terminals. |
Question: | Do the ProMonitor 800 speakers with their rounded shape come with a way to use them horizontally, laying on their side |
Answer: | Thanks for your question. The manufacturer has no special provisions for horizontal use. This is a fantastic sounding speaker. World Wide Stereo is 36 years old and a very proud Definitive Technology dealer. |
Question: | which definitive wall mount is compatible with the pro 800 speaker |
Answer: | ProMount 80 (USD 40/pair) and ProMount 90 (USD 50/pair) are both compatible. ProMount 90 is a significantly better bracket design. Mount 80 is a ball and socket design, mostly plastic, with a screw down cinch ring; it holds the back of the speaker about 2.25" from the wall. ProMount 80 articulates about 65 degrees Mount 90 is a C-clamp design, mostly metal, with a bigger than average Hex-key used to tighten the jaws of the 'C'. It holds the back of the speaker about 3.25" from the wall and can articulate up to 180 degrees. |
Question: | I had planned to purchase the klipsch 5.0 quintet and the salesman told me to go with the pro 800. three hundred more dollars. Is the price worth it |
Answer: | I use Def Tech Pro Monitor 800s for the fronts in my 5.1 system. I installed JBL center and rears in the wall/ceiling and added a powered subwoofer. One of the 'rules' what that my speakers had to be white or hidden, and the Def Tech's came in white. I am very happy with the Def Techs for music and surround, but I did have to use my amp's (Yamaha RX-V671) level adjustments quite a bit to get it to balance well. When I play music, I run it in 2.1 mode. The little Def Techs really fill the 16 x 20' room! Nice but not shrill highs, clear mids, and actually a bit of bass (but I filter under 100 Hz to the sub). The pair of Def Tech Pro 800s set me back about $250 including mounting hardware. Try to catch them on sale. The Klipsch quintet appears to need a sub, so factor that into the price. The Def Tech ProCinema 800 comes with a sub, which is probably a big reason for the price difference. I like the Klipsch sound too, but I could not find small white Klipsch speakers at the time. I have a pair of Klipsch outdoor speakers on my patio (AW525s). I'd say they are a bit brighter than the Def Techs, and they provide enough bass for most listening. It appears the Klipsch setup you are considering uses the same 'tractix' horn tweeter, but a smaller mid/sub. I still consider in-wall fine for center/surround speakers, but I want 'real' speakers for Front L/R for 2.1 music. I'd audition the speakers for music first, then decide if I want their center/surround system. |
