12 best sony studio monitors

Sony is known for producing a wide range of audio equipment, including studio monitors, which are essential tools for audio professionals and musicians. Studio monitors are designed to provide accurate and transparent audio reproduction, making them ideal for recording, mixing, and mastering audio in a studio setting. Here is some information about Sony studio monitors:

  1. Sony SRS Studio Monitor Series: Sony has a series of studio monitors, including the SRS-X77, SRS-X88, and SRS-X99 models. These are wireless speakers designed for high-resolution audio playback. While not traditional studio monitors used in recording and mixing, they are part of Sony's audio lineup and deliver high-quality sound.

  2. Sony SS Series: Sony has produced a variety of traditional passive studio monitors in the past, such as the SS-CDR1 and SS-PC1 models. These monitors were designed for use in recording studios and audio production environments. They typically featured accurate and flat frequency response for precise audio monitoring.

  3. Sony's Hi-Res Audio Support: Many Sony studio monitors, including some of their wireless speakers, are marketed as Hi-Res Audio compatible. This means they are capable of reproducing high-resolution audio formats with exceptional clarity and detail.

  4. Wireless Connectivity: Some of Sony's studio monitors offer wireless connectivity options such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, allowing users to stream audio from various devices without the need for cables.

  5. Design and Build Quality: Sony often places emphasis on the design and build quality of their audio products, including studio monitors. These monitors are typically built to be durable and visually appealing, making them suitable for professional studio environments.

  6. Additional Features: Depending on the specific model, Sony studio monitors may include features like NFC (Near Field Communication) for easy pairing with compatible devices, touch-sensitive controls, and compatibility with Sony's audio streaming and control apps.

It's important to note that the term "studio monitor" can sometimes refer to different types of products. While Sony offers high-quality speakers for audio playback and monitoring, they may not always meet the strict criteria of traditional studio monitors used for critical audio production tasks. If you are a professional audio engineer or musician, it's essential to research the specific model's technical specifications and reviews to ensure it meets your needs for accurate audio monitoring in a studio setting.

User questions & answers

Question: Do these headphones have a true, flat sound or do they boost bass/highs/mids/anything? I need headphones for monitoring that reproduce true
Answer: I know this comes late to answer the original question, but for anyone else wondering, the output is definitely not what I would consider flat. The boost to the bottom end is definitely mild compared to something like Beats or a V-Moda. though I would not consider these to be as precise or flat as the beyerdynamik DT770's that they replaced for me. However, they were $70 and fall comfortably into the "good enough" range that as long as nobody's paying you actual money for studio mastering services, they'll work fine. One thing I will say in their definite favor is that they get absurdly, ridiculously loud without distorting. You could sort of throw any job at these headphones and they'd do a respectable job at it.
Question: what is voice coil
Answer: The voice coil is an electromagnet attached to the diaphragm or "cone" of a large or small speaker. Down the middle of this electromagnet is a permanent magnet, but it's attached to the frame of the speaker or headphone. When electrical impulses from the sound wave energize the coil/electromagnet, it make the electromagnet either the negative or positive pole of a magnet temporarily. This magnetized coil reacts to the permanent magnet and moves. This moves the diaphragm and causes air pressure to push against your ear drum. We hear this as sound if the diaphragm moves fast enough. The diaphragm needs to move back and forth about 8 thousands times a second for us to hear voice, about 30 times a second for us to hear bass and about 15,000 times per second for us to perceive high frequencies. The lighter the coil/diaphragm, the faster it can move. But the coil also has to have enough windings to make a strong electromagnet, which means weight and thus less response. Making an excellent coil is a major part of good speaker design.
Question: I've been using and enjoying the V6 for years. How does it compare to the expensive Sony MDR 7520? Should I leave well enough alone and keep my money
Answer: Have you been using a mid-grade or better headphone amp with your V6's, or straight from the computer/interface? The 7520's and V6s both have low impedances, meaning you can get them loud with consumer devices like iPods, or straight out of the computer jack. And a $390 headphone is going to sound a whole lot better than a $99 pair. That said, if you have NOT been amp-ing your V6's, I would spend $100 on a good headphone amp (do some research) instead. Not only will the sound detail increase, the bass will finally sound as it should, and it think you would be happy saving $300. I have expensive cans too, and they sound great. But once I hooked up my V6's to a good headphone amp, I was blown away. Save your money. My head-phone amp was only ~65-70. I wouldn't go above $120, because the quality wont increase. Also, if you buy a $24 pair of Beyerdynamic replacement ear pads that fit the V6's, comfort will go up 100x. Hope that helped. Bravo audio made my solid state headphone amp and I love it. Fiio makes good stuff, do some research!
Question: What is the difference between the MDRV6 and the MDR
Answer: Both are excellent and very similar. The MDRV6 was the original design of the two and was issued a few years earlier. The components, drivers, ancillary parts of both models appear to be virtually identical. The MDR 7506 was issued by Sony at the behest of recording & mixing engineers who preferred a less pronounced bass and a more prominently enhanced mid and upper mid-range tonal balance (NOT for listening enjoyment reasons!... but to more readily detect noise and distortions in the recording and mixing process... Live DJ's also seem to prefer the 7506 model at public events because the enhanced mid-range brightness helps drown out ambient hall sounds and crowd noises). The V6 and 7506 sound quite similar to most folks. Although I can usually detect a very subtle and nuanced difference between the V6 and 7506, I can only hear a meaningful difference between the two models on less than 1 out of 10 recordings in my collection. I prefer the V6 because it has all the mid and upper mid-range "sparkle", clarity & brightness sufficient to suit my taste and (to my ears) the V6 packs a much more impressive and clean tight bass wallop on those recordings that do feature and emphasize extreme dynamic range, powerful super fast transients, excessive deep bass elements, and/or contain very loud percussive passages.

User questions & answers

Question: Can anyone please recommend a usb adapter for this to plug into a PC? Thanks
Answer: A small, cheap usb DAC adapter probably won't work well for these. They need a bit of power to drive them properly. Power supplied solely from a PC USB port probably won't be enough (500mA max for USB 2.0 and 900mA max for USB 3.0). You will get much better results from an external audio interface and/or a headphone amp.
Question: comfort
Answer: They are very comfortable for the first hour or so. I sometimes wear my glasses rather than my contact lenses while using these headphones, and have found that with glasses the comfortable period is much shorter due to pressure on the wire earpieces. The The coiled cable is fairly long, and if you move around in a chair while using these with a laptop, the cable will eventually snare you. The cable connects to the left earphone, and if your earphone connector is on the right side of your computer, receiver, TV or whatever, that means the cable has to be draped across the front of your body. You could reverse the phones on your head, but that would put the left channel into your right ear and vice versa. There's probably a way to reverse channels to correct this.
Question: How is noise leakage out of these headphones? I am interested in using them for vocal recording so mix leaking out is a no-no
Answer: Even with loud volumes, the leakage is generally non-existent. The volume needs to be uncomfortably loud for me to start hearing a very slight sound leak.
Question: Are these a good choice for listening to music at home? I work from home, and I need music to concentrate
Answer: I love these headphones for listening to music as well as TV. I had a pair of MDR-V6 phones I bought from Tower Records in Nashville years and years ago in the early 90s that just died after almost 30 years of service, and these are very very similar. These don't have quite the bass that the V6s did, and the highs are a little brighter, but that will be in my best interest if they last me 20+ years like the V6s did! There's a reason the MDR7506s became an industry standard soon after they were released by Sony in 1991 and it's not because they're bad to listen to. If you want to listen to your music the way the engineers and artists probably heard it in production, grab a pair of these. Hit YouTube and watch the in-studio recordings of Sting's Ten Summoner's Tales songs and look at the headphones everybody is wearing. Everybody. Mix of both MDR-V6 and MDR7506, the MDR-V6s having been released six years earlier in 1986. All the way up to current times like the video for "Times Like These" with Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Ellie Goulding and all those other artists that was released a few weeks ago had a couple of people wearing them. That's longevity. I found that they are more comfortable with the aftermarket lambskin leather earpads that you can find for around $20. They aren't super easy to put on, but are very comfortable. I love the headphones for listening to music as well as television when I don't want to keep people up at night.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the frequency response
Answer: 53–50,000 Hz frequency response that is the specs from the Sony product page
Question: How is the bass to use without subwoofer
Answer: The SSCS5 has respectable bass response for a bookshelf, down to 50 Hz or so, but I would highly recommend you pair with a decent subwoofer for best results. I use the SSCS5 in a 2.1 setup in our master bedroom and they absolutely slay for movies and music! The imaging and soundstage is spectacular. Really no need for a full surround setup if space is limited or you don’t want to monkey around with wiring rear speakers. However, pairing these with a good subwoofer makes a world of difference in the impact you will experience for movies. If you listen to a lot of electronic music, a good sub is a must.
Question: What are the size(diameter) of tweeters / midranges / subwoofers ? And do these have passive crossovers inside
Answer: Dear Kim,There is a passive crossover in the speaker. 3/4" Super tweeter, 1" Tweeter, and 5 1/4" Woofer.Eric C
Question: This price is for a pair or are sold individually

User questions & answers

Question: What materials are used for the headband and earpads
Answer: Headband is same as MDR-7506 but ear pads of better quality faux leather ( Auray sheep skin pads are the best to replace it with once original pads gets worn out )
Question: Are the legit ones Made in Japan
Answer: Yes
Question: Is it possible that after 10-hour flight bass become weaker? Thank you
Answer: Weaker? No. I have owned 3 pairs in my life over the last 2 decades. Highly doubt this will happen in a 10 hour time period but over time, the pads can flatten and therefore the drive becomes just a half-millimeter to one millimeter closer to your ear causing it to sound like there is less bass and more prominent mids and highs. I say this because when my pads deteriorate over time and I've bought new stock pads, It sounds like the highs become slightly recessed making it sound like there is more bass.
Question: are these compatible with iphones (5 or 6) and samsung galaxy phones
Answer: These are true studio monitor headphones! They have no inline controls and a long, straight, somewhat heavy cable with a heavy metal 1/4" phono connector. So, although they will work with ANY phone, they are not the best suited to portable use. They don't fold up and you'll need an adapter to plug them into your phone (they don't come with one, or anything else for that matter). They also have fairly flat frequency response; for most people this is experienced as cold, "sterile" sound with not enough bass! If you are set on these, might I suggest the MDR-7506 model. They are almost identical physically, but fold up, have a coiled (but still heavy) cord and a "warmer" more pleasing sound. They also come with an integrated mini phone adapter (just unscrew the 1/4" connector!) Still, not the most portable and no inline controls, but you'll save some money and probably like them better.

Answer: No, it is wired, but it has great sound for the money. Only thing I do not like is that the ear muff material on mine is wearing thin, although I wear them all day at work. Can't find another one at this price any better.
Question: will these headphones plug into tv with analog jack
Answer: Well it depends. It will plug into a 3.5 mm or 6.3 mm jack. If by ‘analog’ you mean RCA, it definitely will not unless you buy some specialized adapter, at which point the sound quality isn’t worth plugging an advanced piece of equipment like this.
Question: Is there sound bleed through? I don’t want the click track or anything to come through while recording vocals
Answer: The click track will definitely not be in your recording, but your software will play it in your ear if you ask it to.
Question: Are these any different from the regular version
Answer: No, they are counterfeit. Even the pics are stolen from another vendor. I'm an audio engineer with 25 years experience. Half my job is protecting clients from these types of products. There is no such thing as an "international model" and Sony only won't honor the warranty because they don't warranty fake products.

User questions & answers

Question: Will the mic be disabled when I use the 3.5 mm cable
Answer: Hi grae.b, the three WH-1000XM4 voice pickup microphones located on the left earcup work only when connected via Bluetooth. The WH-1000XM4 headphones work fine for phone calls when the audio cable is connected, though, by utilizing the microphone from the smartphone. ~Earl
Question: Can you use the noice cancelling without playing music
Answer: Hi Someone, Thank you so much for your inquiry in our newest Industry Leading Noise Canceling Overhead Headphones! Yes, you can. The Noise Canceling feature of these Bluetooth® headphones is initially set to automatically turn off after five minutes. You can change the Automatic Power Off setting in the Headphones Connect app from 5 minutes to 30 minutes, 1 hour, or 3 hours or, if you want Noise Canceling to stay on all the time, just simply tap Do not turn off. Also, the automatic power-off feature has only one setting, power-off after 15min of not wearing. I hope this helps! Thanks again for considering Sony! - Romeo
Question: Will these work with ps5 or ps
Answer: The WH-1000XM4 are the best headphones you can buy for use with PS4 or PS5. The Pulse 3D Wireless Headset is a very cheep pair of headphones both in quality and price. The WH-1000XM4 can do everything that the Pulse 3D can do and has many additional features. The sound quality, microphones, noise cancelation, comfort, build quality, battery life, charging speed, and wireless pairing of the WH-1000XM4 are superior in every way compared to the Pulse 3D. The PS5's 3D audio will work with the XM4s. I have had the XM3 model for 2 years and I absolutely love them. They work great with my PS4. Because I was so happy with the XM3 I decided to upgrade to the XM4. I've owned Bose and Beats before but I've found them lacking in features. I can not recommend the WH-1000XM4 enough. You will not be disappointed.
Question: Whats better from the xm3 to to the xm4 is it even worth it
Answer: Hi James, Thank you so much for your interest in our newest Industry Leading Noise Canceling Overhead Headphones WH1000XM4! There have been some great upgrades to the WH1000XM4 from the WH1000XM3. The WH1000XM4 utilizes DSEE Extreme™ (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) which upscales compressed digital music files in real-time. Dynamically recognizing the instrumentation, musical genres, and individual elements of each song, such as vocals or interludes, it restores the high-range sound lost in compression for a richer, more complete listening experience. The new WH1000XM4 will reduce noise 20% better than the prior model. It does this in part by utilizing the 5 built-in microphones to remove the directional sound. Also, the WH1000XM4 features smart listening technology to enhance your listening. With this, you can simply start speaking to automatically pause your music in Speak-to-Chat, or enjoy adaptive playback thanks to the proximity sensor and two acceleration sensors that detect whether your headphones are being worn or not. Finally, we also gently adjusted the design of the headphones. We added more cushioning to the headband and ear padding. We also changed the outside dimensions of the headphones slightly so they sit more comfortably over your head. For their detailed specifications, please visit our support website. I hope this helps! Thanks again for considering Sony! - Romeo

User questions & answers

Question: can these headphones work for Radio Broadcasting
Answer: Yes but no boom mic fitting like on koss pro4aa's
Question: Would this be the headphone I want for listening to audio books on my cell phone
Answer: Yes, you can certainly use these to listen to audio books on your cell phone, although these may be "overkill" for that purpose, since these are more for listening to hi-fi music. They are not noise cancelling, so if you want to drown out outside noise while listening to the books, you might want to consider noise-cancelling headphones.
Question: Can these be used to record voice overs
Answer: No, they are to listen only.
Question: Will they fit on my Roland Electronic Piano
Answer: If it has standard sub miniature jack yes
