11 best closed back headphones

Closed-back headphones are a type of over-ear headphones that are designed with sealed ear cups. These headphones are known for their unique design, which aims to isolate the listener from external sounds while also preventing sound leakage. Here's what you should know about closed-back headphones:

  1. Design: Closed-back headphones have ear cups that are entirely sealed or closed at the back. This design is in contrast to open-back headphones, which have perforated ear cups that allow sound to escape in both directions.

  2. Sound Isolation: One of the primary advantages of closed-back headphones is their ability to provide excellent sound isolation. The sealed ear cups help block out external noise, allowing the listener to enjoy music or audio with minimal distractions from their surroundings. This makes them a popular choice for use in noisy environments or for those who want an immersive listening experience.

  3. Sound Leakage: Closed-back headphones also have minimal sound leakage. Since the ear cups are sealed, the sound generated by the headphones is directed into the listener's ears, and very little sound escapes into the surrounding environment. This is ideal for situations where you don't want to disturb others nearby.

  4. Bass Response: Closed-back headphones tend to offer enhanced bass response compared to open-back headphones. The sealed design allows for better control of low-frequency sound, resulting in a more pronounced and impactful bass.

  5. Use Cases: Closed-back headphones are versatile and can be used for a wide range of applications, including music listening, gaming, recording, and monitoring audio in studio settings. They are especially popular for on-the-go listening due to their noise isolation capabilities.

  6. Comfort: Many closed-back headphones are designed with comfort in mind, featuring padded ear cushions and adjustable headbands to ensure a comfortable fit during extended listening sessions.

  7. Variety: There is a wide variety of closed-back headphones available on the market, catering to different preferences and budgets. They come in various styles, including wired and wireless options.

In summary, closed-back headphones are known for their ability to provide excellent sound isolation, minimize sound leakage, and deliver enhanced bass response. They are a popular choice for individuals who want to enjoy high-quality audio without external distractions and are commonly used in various settings, including everyday listening, gaming, and professional audio applications.

User questions & answers

Question: I have a wide head, so will these break by opening them enough to put them on
Answer: These have great width room and actually fit a bit loose on me.
Question: does this work with an iPad
Answer: Of course. iPad can drive these to a sufficiently loud level. But note that these headphones do not have microphones built in. These are headphones only.
Question: Will these headphones plug into a digital piano? in other words do they have a large enough input and not just a small one like for earbuds
Answer: The headphones have a normal plug, but came with an adapter attached that was a very large pin that I assumed was for musical instruments. I don't know the correct terminology, though, sorry.
Question: Is this on-ear or over the ear
Answer: This over the ear. Thanks

User questions & answers

Question: Hello, differences between the hd569 and the hd579? What of these is better
Answer: Hello, It all depends on what you are looking for, HD 569 is a closed type headphone, it isolates you from your environment and vice-versa (ie: the sound is contained within the headphones). This is perfect for critical listening or a situation where you do not want to disturb/be disturbed. While HD 579 is an open type, it means that it avoids adverse resonating effects in the earcup thus offering best possible sound reproduction with the utmost in transparency. For sound quality, HD 569 is better, it does have strong and juicier bass.
Question: do they have batteries
Answer: They do not need batteries.
Question: Is the headband replaceable on the 569? Also, what replacement ear pads are compatible with this model
Answer: Because the wire runs from the left ear cup through the band to the right, I doubt you could replace the headband without replacing the whole unit. Fortunately the headband is highly flexible and very durable; so you may not need to replace it in the life of the headphones. As far as the ear pads themselves, I believe they are the same as the rest of the 500 series.
Question: Hi, differences between 598cs and 569? also I'd like to know if it is possible to use v-moda boompro cable or similar instead of provided. thanks
Answer: I have both and the sound is IDENTICAL. The 598cs is a special Amazon Only model. The builds are a bit different, and I do find the HD-569s a tad more comfortable (in the headband). Again, absolutely NO DIFFERENCE in the sound.

User questions & answers

Question: Anyone know where these are made? Are they made in China like many competitor's models
Answer: These are made at Beyerdynamic factory in Germany. All of Beyerdynamics large on-ear headphones are made in Germany. Some of the companies in-ears are made in China but 90% of their products are made in Germany.
Question: Given the prices $180 for 32 ohms, $278 for 80 ohms, and $170 for 250 ohms, which one should I buy for 98% amp-less listening
Answer: For an amp-less setup the 32 Ohm are the way to go. Yes you can use the 80 Ohms non-amp'd (the 250s are not recommended for this), but your listening levels are going to be limited (how many dB you get out of them). Beyerdynamic created a set of low-impedance for a reason - and if your laptop / phone / or PC with no external amp/dac or amp'd internal card are your primary use...then you have your answer.
Question: Does the 30 ohms have the same bass output if it is connected to an amp compare with the 250 ohms
Answer: I am looking at this 250 ohm headphone because it has a high impedance. I build a vacuum tube amplifier with a nominal impedance of 600 ohms. Although it seems to drive 32 ohm headphones, it will work better with headphones closer to 600. The high voltage changes needed to drive high impedance headphones do not carry a lot of current, but they do carry much detail. I tend to believe that high impedance headphones will be more responsive and defined than lower impedance headphones, but their hardware requirements are different. Small mobile devices don't have high voltages in them to generate signals for high impedance headphones, which is why low impedance is standardized, and even then, many devices lack the power to drive the bass on them. A dedicated amp is the extra hardware to fill out a quality signal. So even poor quality headphones can sound better when driven by the appropriate source. In the end, your headphones will not improve the sound significantly if you do not have an amplifier to back them up, though I still think higher impedance phones will result in a better sound.
Question: How does this compare to the Audio Technica M50x
Answer: For me, the 2 sound very different from each other. The soundstage of the M50x is pretty narrow while the soundstage of the DT 770 (I’ve only heard the 250 ohm) is very wide for a closed-back. The sound signature of the DT 770 is actually more neutral than the M50x. The M50x is commonly attributed with a V shaped signature, but it’s a pretty wide/flattened V (more like a smile or reverse check mark). The DT 770 (250 ohm) has one of the more neutral signatures out of headphones in this price range/class (you can look up the sound graphs for it to see it’s pretty neutral). I like the velour pads of the DT 770 way more than the pleather pads of the M50x (I will say it’s a big improvement over the M50 pads). The M50x folds up quite well while the DT 770 doesn’t fold up at all. If you plan on packing it, the M50x will take up less space even if you used a case for it. The detachable cable of the M50x also allows it to be stored without risking damage to the cable. Of course, if you’re getting the 250 ohm DT 770, you’re going to need an amplifier while the M50x can be run without one (though it does sound better with one). I’d honestly recommend that you pick out between 5-10 tracks from your library that you know really well and listen to how both headphones reproduce the audio because 1) your ears are unique to you, 2) your preferences for certain specific details are unique to you, and 3) the more headphones you try the more you’ll be able to pick out the sound that you like the most. I modified my M50x with the hybrid Brainwavs Pads and added 2 small vents in the cups to cut the low and high down and make it more neutral as well as open up the soundstage to have better separation (and velour-leather hybrid provides benefits from both worlds regarding comfort-to-leakage). I power the DT 770 with a Phil Jones Big Head DAC/amp.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it as easy to switch between devices as the QC
Answer: You do not need to switch. I think people are trying to use these like the 35 headphones. Which is why the are getting frustrated. Unlike those, you are not forced to switch between devices. It will automatically remember the last 8 devices you paired with. And if the device you want to pair with is set up to connect with it, it will do so automatically. It even will stay connected with two devices at the same time. These are much “smarter” technology than the 35.
Question: Can these connecto to a pc at call center? to be used with voip
Answer: It will work, but probably not well. They have a problem that keeps them from working reliably on Zoom, Teams, or other video conferencing software when connected to Windows PCs or Macs. There is supposed to be a firmware update to fix this, but the first one that came out (1.4) caused worse problems, so they recalled it, and they have only promised a new version (1.5) but I haven't been able to actually find it anywhere as of Sept 13, 2020. Bose support is worse than useless. I'm giving up and returning them.
Question: Are these going to be better than the QC
Answer: I found these to sound better. It may be because the Noise Reduction is slightly better. I have the QC35's and the Sony wh-1000xm3's. I find the Bose 700's to be superior to both even if you consider the sound quality of these to be equal due to the other features. The multipoint bluetooth makes them more attractive than the Sony's. The passthrough is simply amazing. With the headphones on it sounds as if you're not wearing headphones. I no longer use any other headphones. If it's not raining I'll even take them outside because I can hear safely. I just received the Echo Buds and love them. They are my backup when it's raining (I live in Seattle).
Question: Will it be possible to get these without Alexa
Answer: You can decide to not enable Alexa when you get the headset! This isn't something that comes enabled when you receive the headphones.

User questions & answers

Question: Do these headphones come with a carrying case
Answer: No, they don't come, but I suggest to buy a case just in case. If you don't want to, buy it without a case, those are durable headphones, but you never know if you'll need the case to carry them in a bag, back pack, carry on.
Question: How does this compare to the ATH-M30? And how comfortable is it for extended hours of use
Answer: I can only respond to the 2nd part of your question as I have not tried the ATH-M30, but the ATH M20X was (for me) extremely uncomfortable even after using for only a short period of time. This was due to the, IMO, excessive heat build-up which literally caused pools of sweat to collect inside the earpieces. I returned the headset after a few days.
Question: are these good for big heads? i have trouble finding headphones that fit comfortably over my big head. also i wear glasses if that helps
Answer: They are pretty tight on the head, and they go over the ear, so if you're wearing glasses the soft part will push on your frames. I can't wear my glasses with them because I find it too uncomfortable. It might be better to look at on ear, rather than around ear headphones. That said, I've been able to loosen the headphones a lot by bending the the metal headband. If you're not afraid to do that with $50 then you might be able to get them to a comfortable "clamp" amount, haha.
Question: Are these noise-canceling enough to wear on a plane and not hear the plane noise
Answer: They do NOT have electronic noise canceling. They are over the ear. The cups absorb outside sound but not enough that would be considered "noise cancelling". They're mainly for DJ's, home, and professional studio producers who use them because electronic "Noise Cancelling" tech interferes with recordings.

User questions & answers

Question: Do these suppress engine noise
Answer: They suppress all noise by virtue of the seal around the ear, but they won't block it out because they're not technically noise canceling (no active noise suppression). They also do better with high frequency noise and aren't as good in low frequency where much engine noise lies, which is true of all things that only passively block noise eg ear plugs. So the answer is yes to a limited degree, but it won't be a complete suppression by any means and more in the high frequencies. I've found the combo of these with earplugs to be very effective for airplane noise.
Question: Is the cord detachable? The description says it is detachable, answers here say otherwise
Answer: The cord is not detachable but it is replaceable. If you're handy with a soldering iron you can however easily add a 3.5mm headphone jack to use a removable cable.
Question: How is the sound leakage? l need portable headphones to use in the bus, library, and such. I don't want to bother people around me
Answer: There is "sound leakage". At the moment, I have them hooked up to my computer. No special amplification, just on-board Realtek. At 75-100% volume, I can slightly hear them over ambient noise (such as my heater, which is kind of loud) while standing about ten feet away. I don't know if everyone else that answered this question listens to their music at low volume, or if their headphones have some insulation that mine doesn't but in my experience, there is plenty of "sound leakage". Also, you could actually use these as speakers while you're not wearing them. They wouldn't be loud enough to entertain anyone, but you could still listen to something while they sit on your desk.
Question: How durable are they in cold weather
Answer: I’m a professional location sound mixer in Alaska. I’ve had these headphones out in -50 F weather for 12 hour shoots. These headphones can withstand the cold

Professional Drivers

The K92’s generous 40mm drivers deliver the highest sensitivity and widest frequency response of the K52 and K72 - resulting in powerful output that reveals every detail. The K92s also feature a low-impedance design for compatibility with a broad range of playback devices, from professional studio gear to portable music players.

Closed-Back Design - Get Lost in Your Sound

The K92 headphones’ closed-back design eliminates audio leakage and delivers sound to your ears only. The mic won’t pick up the sound of the click track in your headphones - and you’ll always be able to mix and master peacefully without being distracted by outside noise. This exceptional level of audio isolation is due to a new acoustic chamber, which sits between the ear cup and the hinge that connects to the headband.

This exceptional level of audio isolation is due to a new acoustic chamber, which sits between the ear cup and the hinge that connects to the headband. Our innovative design gives you the freedom to move your head in any direction, without letting sound in or out. With the K92, you’ll enjoy a private workspace, no matter where you choose to create.

The Style that Fits All - Comfortable Listening

Getting the perfect mix sometimes means monitoring track levels for hours - and that’s when comfort really counts. We designed our unique self-adjusting headband to automatically create the perfect fit for every band member. No need to mess with delicate sizing mechanisms, which have the potential to break over time. The exposed headband design keeps the K92 headphones comfortably light, without compromising driver size. Breathable, lightweight ear pads encircle your ears, rather than putting pressure on them. The golden accents emphasis the high level of quality and create a stylish appeal. And a single-sided cable gives you freedom to move. To sum it up, these high-performance headphones sound, feel and look great.

Professional Build Quality - Long Live the Music

AKG is known for making professional-grade gear that can stand the test of time and the K92 headphones are no exception. We put them through extreme testing and abuse to ensure they'll handle anything you throw at them: Our regimen of drop-tests simulates, exaggerated falls. Gold-plated connections and 80,000 cable bend cycles - at both end points - ensure the cable won't break or under-perform. And intensive driver testing - a prolonged series of 3W bursts every half second - means that the drivers won't fail when you really need them. Since ear pads are often the first components to show wear we made them replaceable to protect your investment over time. With exception performance and elegant design to match the K92 is built for pros.

The AKG Legacy - Inspiring Greatness for Decades

For more than 65 years, AKG has helped create the iconic sounds of some of the world’s most well known recording artists, engineers and producers. Our designers and engineers have made it their life’s passion to find new ways to deliver breakthrough experiences for artists of all levels. Whether in the studio or on stage, when you wear AKG headphones, you’re seconds away from creating history.

Product description

AEON Flow 2 Closed is Dan Clark Audio's all-new affordable high-performance closed-back headphone. The original AEON Flow headphones broke new ground with their ergonomic and stylish industrial design that’ve become the signature of Dan Clark Audio designs. AEON Flow won many awards for its superb ergonomics, great sound, high-reliability and exceptional value; it’s hard to believe that they could find ways to improve on that… but they did! Performance That Just Won't Quit- The new AEON 2 is no minor tweek to a great product, it’s a colossal functional and performance upgrade. The team took what they learned designing one of the most highly awarded flagship headphones in the market last year, Ether 2, and redesigned the AEON 2 from the ground up using ETHER 2’s state of the art driver tech.

New features include:

-Updated driver flipped 180 degrees removes all motor structures between the driver and the ear for higher resolution and much larger soundstage

-Streamlined precision machined single-piece flow elements eliminates voids and stray air paths within the motor to improve internal airflow, enhancing micro-detail retrieval

-New "collapsing gimbal" allows a full size headphone to store in a remarkably compact case for easy traveling, without adding weight

-Superior driver damping for improved resolution, dynamics and a smoother frequency response

AEON Flow 2 replaces a cast aluminum baffle with a carbon fiber and machined aluminum design that is more rigid yet lighter. The sum of all these innovations is a headphone the renders music with emotional impact unheard of at this price point: visceral bass, transparent mids, and detail up top that is presented in a deep and immersive soundstage that puts the music further “out of your head” to deliver a deeply satisfying experience.

AEON 2 is finished in a red paint with black anodizing and real carbon fiber cup inserts.

User questions & answers

Question: what cable do they come with
Answer: Glad you asked! Too many people are not reading the container carefully. The Gentle Skin Cleanser looks milky, has little to no fragrance, and is so gentle I use it only in winter. The Daily Facial Cleanser has a strong fragrance and makes an outstanding body wash if you don't mind the fragrance. They look identical except for the wording on the label, so if ordering from Amazon, make sure the one you ordered is the one you receive!
Question: What is the impedance
Answer: I also have extremely sensitive skin but did just fine with the normal cleanser. I have heard that the gentle cleanser tends to not clean enough, so I would stick with normal :)
