Answer:	Technically you can but not recommended. You will likely get terrible performance because the CPU and memory is not designed for this use case. 512MB RAM is very low for a datastore. This model is really geared towards traditional file sharing and media streaming. You want something with higher CPU and read/wrtie caching like the DS218/DS218+.

Answer:	Carlos is correct. 16tb is the limit of the ds218j or 8tb in raid configuration and the DS220j is 2ea 12 Tb for a total of 24Tb or 12Tb, in used in a raid situation.

Answer:	In the 8 bay area i have 8 3.5 hdd (5) 10tb (1) 8tb (1) 6tb (1) 4 tb, the avg temp stays around 34-35 c. I replaced (1) 5.25 drive bay with icy dock 4 x 2.5 ssd and the other 5.25 drive bay with startec 5.25 trayless hot swap rack. The system is for unraid server with several vm's run 24/7, file sharing , plex along with docker containers etc. The only time i have seen any temps above 40c was on the 8tb drive when doing parity check and then never near the manufacturing max of the drive. Note that I did replace the fans with Noctual fans, i did this based on some of the articles i had read about air flow not being the best in this case.

Answer:	Yes. A long story short, my WD My Cloud Mirror suffered a "blown out" ethernet port due to a lightening strike. I purchased the EX2 Ultra (diskless) and placed my old WD Red drives, that were in the My Cloud Mirror, and it worked flawlessly. It didn't skip a beat. I was up and running like nothing happened. I was so relieved that the content on the drives were unaffected!

Answer:	2 4TB drives wich can then be run in a raid configuration.

Answer:	Well, this is an old question, so nobody will see my glorious contribution; but here goes anyway! In order to use RAID 1, the two drives in use for that must be of the same size. They should be identical --- well nearly so. But, if one of the drives is slower than the other, the slower drive controls the speed (obviously). Two 6 TB drives in RAID 1, however, does not give you exactly 6 TB. There is a small part of the discs that gets assigned overhead duty to keep track of the status of the mirroring and to manage the mirroring. You could assume a high percentage --- maybe even more than 99%. I can't find any real figures for it, but since a 6 TB drive doesn't hold 6 TB anyway, you might just assume something like 5.98 TB for two nominal 6 TB drives in RAID 1. Keep in mind that RAID isn't free!! Not only is the capacity of the RAID array less than the combined capacity of the drives, there is also a performance hit because everything has to be written more than once and depending on which RAID (n) you choose, it may be split across several drives. Another consideration which I had not previously considered is the age of the drives. If you start with two identical drives, four years from now each of those drives will have been in service for, guess what, four years. If one of them fails, the other may not be long behind. Some folks (what we usually refer to as "THEY") would suggest a mix of drive ages. Your mileage may vary, as "they" say. :-)

Answer:	A: You can use this for Plex storage, NOT for running the actual server. You shouldn’t run Plex on any NAS TBH. Store your movies here use a refurbished Optiplex or other desktop computer (headless) as the server.

Answer:	The DSM software come with a number of features to prevent malicious attacks. One of my units was hit with a ransomware attack. Nothing import on the unit as it was used for security camera video storage. I believe I was hit with what is called man in the middle hack. My credentials were taken when I periodically logged in to view the camera images. I was not taking the security seriously. Now I have turned on HTTPS and 2FA (two factor authentication). Point is that the features are there to secure you NAS but you have to make use of them. Hope this helps.

Answer:	Upgrading to the newer model would make more sense. You can either sell your older unit or run it in a backup-only capacity. Personally, I think the DX513 is overpriced and introduces other technical challenges.

Answer:	1. You may use Samba to transfer the metadata to the NAS first, and then SSD to the back end of the NAS, and put the metadata to the Plex directory in the NAS. 2. Answer:	Yes, it has an HDMI port but it's for showing the codes for developers who may log in the background of the NAS to run commands. The HDMI port is not for displaying videos.
Question:	Do drives need to be the same size
Answer:	If the drives will be created as a RAID mode, it's suggested to use the drives in the same brand and size. The WD red hard drives and the Seagate IronWolf hard drives are recommended. If you use these drives as individual ones, you may use drives in different sizes.
Question:	Can this device be used as a backup destination for files and system images from my wireless win10 laptops using the win10 file history feature
Answer:	Yes, it supports. 1. You will need to map the shared folders in the NAS as a network drive to your Window 10 PC; 2. it Windows Key + Q to bring up the search. 3. Type in "backup". 4. Choose Backup settings. 5. Select More options. 6. Choose See advanced settings. 7. Select Add network location. 8. Choose a folder on the network drive. 9. Choose Select folder. 10. Hit OK.
