User questions & answers

Question: weird Q: a recent outage trapped elder lady in her power recliner. can this be used
Answer: We have a dual electric recliner sofa. After being temporarily "trapped" during an power outage, we purchased the APC UPS, 600VA BE600M1 APC UPS Battery Backup system. This week we had a 3 day outage, and the UPS worked like a champ. A must have for anybody with electric recliner chair or sofa.
Question: How long will it power my system while the power is off
Answer: I had my desktop computer, 2 monitors, and my modem/router combo plugged into the ups battery power. It lasted less than 20 minutes when the power went out, and there was no additional warning when the battery was about to shut off. It just had this intermittent double beep for about 15- 20 minutes, then bang, everything off. Pretty disappointed. I guess you get what you pay for.
Question: How often does the battery need to be replaced
Answer: I have had APC batteries last 7-8 years, the shortest was 13 months (12-month warranty, figures!). I have bought replacement batteries from other vendors, don't last at all. I had a beautiful APOC SUA1500, Batteries Plus sold me 2 x SLA batteries duct taped together (yes, literally) and they were NOT made for a backup power suppl;y as they stated, leaked, corroded the entire inside of my very expensive unit! I certainly regret that decision! Batteries Plus said they had the APC batteries, but when I got to the store they did not, ordering them, would take a long time, so I tried their option - will NEVER shop at Batteries Plus again! Just yesterday I had one APC battery die. Bought new unit Dec 17, 2017, today is March 31, 2020. Just over 3 years, their average. No complaints.
Question: Does it have ethernet ports
Answer: No, and generally you'll want to avoid surge protectors or UPS's with built in surge protectors that have multiple ports (i.e. coaxial, Ethernet, phone) since these devices turn on at different voltage levels. So once a surge comes in on the LINE (HOT) side of the AC outlet and the voltage has reached a certain level, the surge will be directed to both the NEUTRAL and the SAFETY GROUND, but as soon as that happens, some of the surge makes it's way into the COAX, ETHERNET, and PHONE ports and if you have something plugged into those ports then it goes into the devices. A recent study (see: http://incompliancemag.com/article/lightning-surge-damage-to-ethernet-and-pots-ports-connected-to-inside-wiring/) confirms this. The best place to secure PHONE, and COAX connections is where they enter the house and where they can have a short (less than 10 foot connection to a buried GROUND ROD). If you secure phone & coax at the service entrance and protect your electronics with Type 3 Surge Protectors you won't need to secure the Ethernet connections. Also, it's not a good idea to rely on the Surge Protector inside a UPS as those have a higher clamping voltage generally in the 650-800 Volt range and that means until the voltage reaches 800 volts, your electronics is getting zapped. You can't plug a UPS with an MOV surge protector into an existing MOV based surge protector for compliance (safety) issues, but you can plug a UPS with an MOV surge protector or an MOV surge protector into a Series Mode filter since the filter does not rely on sacrificial MOV's. The Series Mode filter starts to work at 121.4 VAC on a 120 VAC line and it totally eliminates the surge instead of diverting it and hoping the surge can make it's way back through your house wiring to the buried ground rod from the main electrical panel.

User questions & answers

Question: When my heater or dishwasher first kicks on, my big screen TV shuts off (then comes back on seconds later). Will the 650VA LCD UPS fix this? I live in an old house
Answer: When a large motorized appliance such as a dish washer or a heater blower turns on, the initial startup draws a lot of current, much more current than it draws after it gets going a few seconds later. A UPS can help prevent such short-term voltage drops. But it us important to size the UPS correctly to the TV size. It is important to find out how much power in Watts, or Volt-Amps is your Big screen TV consuming. Perhaps you can find out on Google, the owners manual or in the back of the TV. For example, if your TV draws 400 Watts. then 650 volt-amp UPS will do. You want your UPS to be rated to be one and a half times bigger in Volt-amps than your TV rating. If your TV draws 500 watts, then get a 750 volt-amp UPS.
Question: how much time do i have to shut all things off and down
Answer: It depends on how much of that 510watts you're using according to cyberpower you have10.4 Minutes when using 210 Watts, and 2.15 Minutes when using 425 Watts and probably 1min or less if you're under max loadThe power went off at my house recently for a couple minutes and before i could shutdown my htpc the power came back and my htpc never shut offMind you my htpc is using a 600watt power supply but computers don't use the full wattage, especially if it's idle
Question: I've had my pc shut down twice since plugging this is and the battery backup has not kicked on. its plugged in thru usb, software is installed
Answer: Several Power Supply Units are not compatible with this UPS. The reason is that this UPS generates a simulated sine wave when the battery kicks in. Power Factor Correction PSUs automatically shut down when they receive this simulated waves because it doesn't match its internal "requirements" for power. Read this: https://www.dougv.com/2010/03/active-pfc-enabled-psus-are-not-compatable-with-most-low-end-ups/
Question: Is the battery replaceable
Answer: I almost bought a brand new unit. I have two EC850LCD and the battery is replaceable. Its as simple as purchasing the correct replacement 3rd party battery, removing 4 screws and the battery connectors. Make sure that the specs of the battery matches the original Leoch SLA. Dimension is 5.9 x 2.5 x 3.7 inches. I replaced with https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003S1RQ2S/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. (ExpertPower 12V 7 Amp EXP1270 Rechargeable Lead Acid Battery). Tested by unplugging from wall and my systems stayed up for 10-15 minutes.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the unit noisy, ie is there a fan
Answer: There is no fan on my BX1500M. Is quiet on Utility power and only a very low hum on battery power if you place your ear close to it.
Question: Does the 1500va indicate it's amp hour (how many hours it will run?) ie 100 volts x 15 amps for 1 hour? or 100 volts x 5 amps for 3 hours
Answer: The 1500VA/900watt rating has absolutely NOTHING to do with the run time. It is a rating of the maximum output level for a very short period of time. The BX1500M uses a 12 Volt 9 Ampere hour battery that means it stores 108 watt/hours of energy. The inverter (the electronic circuit that converts the stored 12 Volt DC power to 117 Volt AC power) is far from 100% efficient, and will not operate if the battery is near complete discharge, so the actual stored energy output for this device is 68 minutes at a 100 watt load. At the full load output of 900 watts the UPS will provide power for about 5 to 6 minutes before the battery is depleted and it shuts down.
Question: Have a few months lost power and this goes out immediately. is there a set up that i missed? light on with power. thanks
Answer: I did the same thing on my first unit, didn't plug in the battery. Went for a long time because the rest of the unit was working ok and I WAS SURE it would work if needed. It never would switch to safe shut down mode. FINALLY I opened the unit and found the battery disconnected ! Will make sure the next unit will have the battery hooked up as per directions.
Question: Pure sine wave? or Modified
Answer: It is in between. Though not pure sine wave, it has many little steps, vs Modified (modified square wave) which is simply 0 + 0 - 0 + 0 - 0 +... (3 status levels) A very good explanation and comparison graphs are shown at: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/812247-best-ups/ Hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: is this a better product than the apc BR1500G
Answer: I purchased an APC BR1500G about five months ago for a high wattage new computer build. The build got delayed because of the demands of my academic job. On September 8th, when it was pretty clear that Hurricane Irma was going to directly hit Naples, I thought about re-purposing my UPSs (four CyberPower 1000s, and the yet unused BR1500) for supplying light, power for my receiver (for listening to local radio broadcasts), and charging my iPhone and two iPads when the power inevitably went out. The afternoon of Sep 9th, I plugged all five units into the wall to make sure that they had time to fully charge before the hurricane hit. Being twice as heavy as the CyberPower units, I had great expectations for the BR1500. Also, because it was new, I expected it to perform to its full potential. Before anyone asks, yes, I read the manual's instructions for reversing the battery for the initial charge. Irma hit Naples in the late afternoon Sep 10th with Cat-4 winds, and the power went out at about 6:00pm. While it was still light, I tried to ready the APC for its job for the night. For over an hour, I tried to coax power from the unit. I tested the battery and found it to be fully charged, but when inserted in the unit, the APC remained dead. I found that I could get power out of it if I kept the battery cover off and laid it on its side, but the current out the AC side was intermittent, at best. Giving up on the APC, I used what I thought to be the newest of my CyberPower UPSs. That first CyberPower unit provided power to three 35W LED lamps, and the receiver for over eight hours that first night when I shut it down. It lasted an additional three hours the second night, while it was supplying light, running the receiver, and charging all three iDevices which were depleted during the day. I got similar results from the second, and third CyberPower units (one of which was at least three years old). The power came back on the fifth day after the hurricane, and I never got to the fourth CyberPower UPS. When I read the warranty instructions for the BR1500G, they demanded that the faulty unit be sent directly to APC and not returned to the seller. I decided to eat my mistake and include the BR1500 in the refuse bin with all of the rest of the hurricane debris (I removed, and kept the battery). When we're not having a hurricane, power outages seldom last for more than a few seconds, and are mainly 1-2 sec brownouts, so I never really got to test the CyberPower units in any real-world application before the hurricane. I have Thanksgiving week off and I intend to complete the computer build I started in May. For me, choosing the CP1500 CyberPower for backup of the new computer was a no-brainer . In my opinion, APC makes undependable units that I intend to avoid at all costs.
Question: What is maintenance like on an UPS? Isn't the battery constantly being overcharged? How often should you replace a battery in an UPS
Answer: I purchased mine in August 2008 and it's March 2016 now. The software is only just telling me now that I need to replace the batteries, so I'd say for me at least the battery life has been fantastic, with no maintenance. This is in contrast to another CyberPower Unit I had, a CP1000AVR, and an APC unit I had, neither of which lasted even half as long as this unit has. I can't recall if maybe those units weren't line interactive, but all I can say is that this UPS has been fantastic and zero maintenance until now. Replacement batteries are $68 on Amazon or as low as $32 at other online sellers.
Question: Can it run a Keurig
Answer: Look at the back of your coffee maker and see that it will use more than the 815 watts this will allow so no. My Mr Coffee uses 900 watts. I just looked up the power consumption for a normal Keurig home brewer and it is 1,500 watts at peak power.
Question: Would this computer be good to host a game server
Answer: This "computer" is the most POWERFUL of them all! Asking for it to host a game isn't even a valid question it does so well! Though the screen is not that great you could easily PLUG a monitor into it.

Question: How long does the battery last
Answer: I just purchased mine but from past experiences it should last 5 years and you can use it without a battery but without the software or battery back up.
Question: How long will the 425 model run a 5 watt device
Answer: My UPS 650 software says I have up to 35 minutes when hooked up to a desktop monitor and modem. I would think the 425 would be 20 minutes or less if the same power consumption is demanded. 5 watts isn't much, so it should last longer.
Question: There really has been no direct answer to the question about disabling the alarm (forget installing software). Is there a way by "holding" the button
Answer: If you read the manual they make available on this page for the 600AH batteries and up, you will see that you CAN TURN OFF ALL ALARMS! I would not recommend turning off the LOW BATTERY alarm, but you can turn that off too! Not sure about the 425 though. Though, you can look up the manuals for all of them as the not only make them available but ENCOURAGE you to read them BEFORE you buy them!! Kinda like that kind of information being there.

User questions & answers

Question: I am in doubt between CP1500PFCLCD and CP1500AVRLCD for my Home Theater. Which one will fit me better ? Do I really need the PFC feature
Answer: Yes, you do need the PFC feature. I have both a CP1500PFCLCD and 2 CP1500AVRT's for my desktop (see the first and last 2 minutes):https://youtu.be/pwNJto6VWE8I connected my Altec Lansing 2.1 speakers to the CP1500AVRT. While I had a power outage, the speakers would not work. They only worked when I used the CP1500PFCLCD. I believe it has something to do with the way the cheaper CP1500AVRT outputs power. Also, the way the cheaper UPS's output power may damage the sensitive electronic components of your stereo and TV. This happened to my TV which was connected to another cheaper UPS, a 500VA Blackout Buster. I never found out why the TV was damaged..
Question: I noticed the 900 watt rating, will this unit protect and back up a computer with a 1200 watt internal power supply
Answer: IMPORTANT ---> READ: With my new desktop bought last year, the original computer power supply was a ThermalTake 800 watt unit. I knew from the running wattage draw that was/is a nominal 150-165 watts or so, this 800 watt OUTPUT CAPABLE- NOT WHAT IT DRAWS FROM THE WALL, ThermalTake would shut down my computer when the power bumped off or during a self test. I thought my original 900 watt Cyberpower sine wave UPS would/should handle this relatively LIGHT LOAD of the 165 watts if/when it transferred to BU power, but, it DID NOT. SO, I returned this 900 watt CP UPS for the 1500 Pure Sine Wave unit thinking, hell, NOW this sob should not shut down my computer if/when a power bump occurred. AGAIN, even with this 1500 watt CP UPS, the damn computer kept shutting down. After lots of research I discovered that this ThermalTake model, as well as their other models, DO NOT HAVE ANY CURRENT LIMITING CIRCUITRY that limits the INRUSH CURRENT when the computer - power supply first kicks on. I returned and bought a EVGA 650 G5 that DOES HAVE INRUSH CURRENT LIMITING. After replacing the POS ThermalTake wit this PROPERLY DESIGNED PS - EVGA, my computer has never shut down during power bumps or self tests. SO, lesson here is that these computer power supplies are rated as to WHAT POWER THEY CAN OUTPUT - NOT AS TO WHAT THEY DRAW from the wall outlet. As mentioned before my desktop only draws a nominal 165 watts or so and with using a better quality, PROPERLY DESIGNED computer power supply, EVGA for one, I could have kept/used the original 900 watt CP UPS without any issues.... IF you are still having any transfer issues with your UPS not switching over and shutting down your computer, LOOK AT THE DAMN computer power supply as the definite culprit......
Question: The Box says CP1500FCLCD ADAPTIVE SINE WAVE . The spec sheet says "Output Waveform" ADAPTIVE SINE WAVE
Answer: I am familiar with oscilloscopes and plugging one up to a wall outlet can be frightening. My problem is not my hydroelectric, but while the frig and electric range/oven, have their own circuits, I have just too much stuff on a couple 15 AMP circuits, and the microwave and toaster oven and laser printer can brown out a circuit and my UPS will kick in. The Automatic Voltage Regulator will pull more of the brown out (lower voltage) electricity until the UPS saves the day. Even when the UPS does not kick in, I'm sure the AVR is doing my electronics a marvelous service. The brief sag in voltage when a motor or laser, or the same thing, a laser printer starts up should be avoided. Never, ever, by the way plug a laser printer, refrigerator, etc. into this UPS!!! The pure analogue sine wave of the falling water generator v. "adaptive sine wave" of this UPS, reminds me of when CDs first came out, eventually to replace vinyl records. The CD's were condemned as they have digitized the nigh infinite bumps and valleys of a vinyl record. Personally, I could never hear the difference, while tapes are so linear and jumping between tracks meant feet of tape. Recording was very difficult to mix. Sorting out ones music was bulky, and time consuming. Probably, the CD's lack the dynamic range of vinyl records, but let's remember, CD's were the first widely sold and owned digital media. Another myth busted is that digital cameras would never replace film. Every other UPS I had bought was short lived, and this unit, of which I use three, is a marvelous buy for me. This is a more expensive version, but unless your corporate requires the extra certification for the more expensive model, get this one. And I LOVE that if you overload this UPS, the unit will not let you do it. Let's say we wanted a "PURE (ANALOGUE) SINE WAVE?" Well, the UPS battery could spin a generator, which is mechanical and will require maintenance and will not kick in soon enough. This will show my age: once upon a time Dove soap advertised that it was 99.44% pure soap. Some chemist tested the soap, and when all the percents of the compounds were added together, 0.56% was unaccounted. We should not have said that Dove soap was pure soap and they chose to advertise that Dove is 99.44% pure soap, which made it a mysterious, almost pure soap, which when rounded out, was 1% MIA. Nowadays we should say that Dove soap is ADAPTIVE SOAP. I have an electric piano hooked up to one of my UPS. I have my NAS hooked up to another. I have my TV and desktop computer and game console hooked up to my third. (I am not going to run the desktop and game console at the same time.) These UPSs are quite far from each other. I believe ALL my electronics, apart from the mechanical hard drive in the game console, will outlive me. When there is a brown out, all the electronics lose the battle to draw more current. This UPS feeds within tolerances, EXACTLY what is PERFECT for my electronics. Final Bonus Advice: This UPS has electronics, and using the battery, charging the battery, generates heat. The unit does not have a fan and doesn't need one, but it needs to breath as in ventilate. Do not put this unit in a cabinet and close the door. HEAT IS THE ENEMY OF ELECTRONICS! Semiconductors are semi passing the electricity along, and semi producing heat. Besides surge protection, and besides the UPS not allowing the equivalent of pulling the plug, this UPS has two more fabulous features, which will benefit your electronics: 1. The Automatic Voltage Regulation means that small brownouts and spikes will be addressed. 2. The ADAPTIVE SINE WAVE is as pretty as the oscilloscope of the original Outer Limits. 3. (The USB charging ports are way cool, nifty, dynamite, keen.)
Question: What is the power draw of CP1500PFCLCD with no attached devices? Competitors are 100-130W, but "save up to 75% energy" doesn't tell me anything
Answer: I watched a couple Youtube video reviews where people used meters to check and it seems there is between 11 and 16 watts in over head while the battery is charging. If the unit is turned off and still plugged into the wall outlet the battery will still charge to keep it at 100% but not actually output power to it's outlets. If the battery is 100% charged then there is no draw what so ever. The only way to know for sure what is going on is for you to actually test your unit to see how much power it is consuming. From what I saw in the video's on Youtube it ranged between 0 and 19 watts, depending on the charge state of the batteries.

Why Do You Need a UPS System?

Even brief power outages can result in data loss or potential hardware damage. A UPS system provides battery backup power to keep your devices running during short outages and provides enough runtime to properly shut down electronics during extended outages.

User questions & answers

Question: pure sine wave
Answer: What matters to this question is if the UPS unit can supply the electrical power requirements of the recliner. The specfications for the Tripp Lite mdl AVR900U can be found at https://www.tripplite.com/avr-series-120v-900va-480w-ultra-compact-line-interactive-ups-usb-port~AVR900U. Alas, LazyBoy at https://www.la-z-boy.com/b/recliners/power/_/N-musa9iZwyori5 does NOT appear to provide technical data via their Website such as peak and sustained electrical power draw in amperes or Watts of their motorized recliner products. Thus there is no way to answer the question. In any case, the Tripp LIte model in question is designed as "line interactive" for power conditioning for and continuous operation of power sensitive electronics such as computer equipment and as such is overkill for infrequent motor operation of a recliner. Consider probably less expensive "standby" power UPS units.
Question: What’s the lowest wattage AC outlet supports without auto shutdown? E.g. will 5-10w load prompt auto shutdown
Answer: Thank you for reaching out about the AVR900U. Tripp Lite is a very trusted company and has been in business for over 95 years. When it comes to replacement it is more cost effective to replace the battery vs the entire unit. When the time comes our user manual has instructions for replacing the battery and mentions the battery replacement model number. If you would like to discuss your application, please contact our Chicago-based Presales Applications Team at 773.869.1773 (M-F 8AM-6PM Central) and they will happily assist you.
Question: How long does it take to fully charge through the usb c port using a good fast usb c wall charger that’s between 25w-100w? Just wanted an estimation o
Answer: According to the packaging, the unit is designed to be disposable and contains no user-serviceable parts. I have not actually checked my unit for battery access. I'm sure there's an unauthorized way to open the case and replace the battery (similar to re-celling a laptop battery, but with a much safer end product).
Question: Does this support pass-through charging (charge the external battery while in use
Answer: Answering my own question ~2 yrs later. Successfully used with a whole-house 20 kW Generac and multiple AC mains fails longer than the unit discharge time. The observed behavior is: AC mains fail, the unit picks up the load quickly enough that all but possibly the smallest electronic devices ride it through without a blink and, critically for this question, the unit's discharge alarm starts a slow beep. The generator and transfer switch combo is set to have the generator running stably and transfer power at the 30 second mark of AC mains fail. At 31 seconds the house is powered by the generator and a few seconds later the unit discharge alarm stops, suggesting it is accepting generator power for charging.
