Question:	what if the NAS device fails? Can you remove the drives and put in another device to recover data or are they hardware layer encrypted
Answer:	Yes. A long story short, my WD My Cloud Mirror suffered a "blown out" ethernet port due to a lightening strike. I purchased the EX2 Ultra (diskless) and placed my old WD Red drives, that were in the My Cloud Mirror, and it worked flawlessly. It didn't skip a beat. I was up and running like nothing happened. I was so relieved that the content on the drives were unaffected!

Answer:	2 4TB drives wich can then be run in a raid configuration.

Answer:	Well, this is an old question, so nobody will see my glorious contribution; but here goes anyway! In order to use RAID 1, the two drives in use for that must be of the same size. They should be identical --- well nearly so. But, if one of the drives is slower than the other, the slower drive controls the speed (obviously). Two 6 TB drives in RAID 1, however, does not give you exactly 6 TB. There is a small part of the discs that gets assigned overhead duty to keep track of the status of the mirroring and to manage the mirroring. You could assume a high percentage --- maybe even more than 99%. I can't find any real figures for it, but since a 6 TB drive doesn't hold 6 TB anyway, you might just assume something like 5.98 TB for two nominal 6 TB drives in RAID 1. Keep in mind that RAID isn't free!! Not only is the capacity of the RAID array less than the combined capacity of the drives, there is also a performance hit because everything has to be written more than once and depending on which RAID (n) you choose, it may be split across several drives. Another consideration which I had not previously considered is the age of the drives. If you start with two identical drives, four years from now each of those drives will have been in service for, guess what, four years. If one of them fails, the other may not be long behind. Some folks (what we usually refer to as "THEY") would suggest a mix of drive ages. Your mileage may vary, as "they" say. :-)

Answer:	I am going to buy the 4 bay version. If I can stream from Plex using 2 old Lenovo IX4-300D's than I am sure the ARMADA 388 1.6ghz chip will be fine for steaming from Plex. The Lenovo only has a 1.2ghz chip and ARMADA XP chip in it.

Answer:	It seems you are using the Apple Thunderbolt Adapter or similar, yes? Those will NOT work with this drive, since the port on the drive is NOT Thunderbolt 3. The interface is actually USB-C, which can be connected to/is compatible with a Thunderbolt 3 computer port, but does not work with a Thunderbolt converter since it's not an actual Thunderbolt 3 port. Any drive that says "USB-C (Thunderbolt 3-compatible)" is a USB-C drive.

DAS(Direct-attached storage) Mode

1. While connected to a computer, the wireless function is turned off;

2. The default hard drive format is NTFS, you can use it directly on Windows. If you want to use it on a Mac, please reformat the drive to EXFAT. Otherwise, data can only be read in DAS mode, but data cannot be written.

Installation and Operation Tips

1. Please download and install the SSKCloud App on "Apple store" or "Google Play" for mobile devices;

2. The software for PC/Mac is on the drive itself. Just use it as an external drive to copy the binaries onto your system and install the ''app''. Or you can check our website to see if have the newer version.

3 . For computer, You can also MAP the SSK HDD and / or a USB device connected to the Host Port to Windows Explorer on a PC or to a Mac using the Samba Protocol. SSKCloud software has addressed to access Samba. Please Click : " Samba Management", it will switch to Samba interface automatically, so you don't need to enter the IP address and password manually.

4. Once mapped on a PC or Mac you will find a series of folders already setup under \share_sda1. The device comes with a bunch of "default" folders that you can't delete (they are all "system folders"). These must be left on the device as they are but you may freely add additional folders here and as sub folders under the already setup folders. You also can use your PC or Mac to read /write / delete files in these folders that will be accessible on the PC or Mac as well as from a phone or tablet connected to the SSK locally or remotely.

5. For Mac OS, it doesn't support Time Machine backup wirelessly, only can work on USB mode. But the SSKCloud App supports Real-time synchronous update and backup of designated folders on both Mac and Windows Computer.

6. The hard drive have private area and public area to protect private data, but it doesn't support encrypting every folder.

They are so much cheaper then networked attached storage anyway, less electronics to fail...just better all the way around unless you are dealing with someone who can't cope with connecting and disconnecting stuff, it's far better. Answer:	To clarify, this can absolutely be used as storage for the media you host on a plex server but you will need to run the plex server on another device. Kind of Similar to DC Mike's setup; I have a an old AMD PC that hosts my plex server (Athlon x2 4400+, 8gb DDR2, and Radeon HD 6870 *can't remember if video card helps with plex decoding at all, but it's there anyway and has no other use to me) I do have a couple TB worth of media on HDDs in that box but the majority of my data is on similar NAS devices like this buffalo Linkstation. Literally any USB external or NAS drive can host media for a Plex server with extremely little chance of limited performance. The limiting factor in Plex performance comes with the capability of the computer hosting the server to decode and encode media to play on the device you're trying to stream to (for instance, accessing your plex server from another pc takes much fewer resources than on your ipad would require because the server pc has to reencode the media to a format that iOS can utilize) and, in the case of remote streaming, your internet connection. The 10+ year old pc I described can stream multiple 1080p video remotely with no visible lag and I've tried as much as 7 local network 1080p streams and had not issue there.tl;dr - This can host all of your music, video, pictures for a plex server to access but not run the plex server itself.

Answer:	One of the main functions of this unit is for backup mirroring is part of that you can however reformat it and during that process you can choose which type you want depending on the age of the unit and the firmware on the unit options are a little different but the answer ultimately is yes
Question:	Can I run this wirelessly: not plugged into the router or my computer, but still (privately) accessible online
Answer:	This is only a wired NAS. But as long as you have it on the same network, your wireless devices will access it. But the NAS will only get the network from a wired switch/router.
Question:	Can it be used for my home media kodi and plex
Answer:	It is difficult to answer this completely since we are not familiar with your particular environment. Our products do not have native support for Kodi or Plex, but the TeraStation 1200 does have a built in DLNA server that may suit your needs. If you already have a media server in place you may be able to use the TeraStation as additional network storage for that server.

Answer:	There is no onboard integrated storage. This is 40 Tera not Gigabytes unit. It has four bays for 3.5” SAS drives. You can use 2.5” SAS with an adapter.

Answer:	1. The model listed in the question is a disk-less 4 bay model. This means as shipped the capacity is ZERO, no drives at all. 2. The model listed in the question specifically has a maximum capacity of 48TB implemented by ADDING 4 each 12TB drives. When configured, the user can make this into an highly reliable array of 12TB total capacity, a redundant arrays totalling 24TB (two redundant 12TB), or an array of all 4 drives adding to 48TB. 3. A single 40TB capacity drive is only now becoming available in the industry. The specs for the model listed in the question suggests the maximum size of any one drive in the box must not individually exceed 12TB (currently). This may be either or both a firmware (Operating System) or interface hardware limitation.

Answer:	You should use caution when using RAID 5 with member drives larger than 1TB that are consumer grade... The normal bit error rate on consumer grade drives makes an unrecoverable error on a Raid 5 rebuild likely. In my experience, RAID 10 is the better compromise - the processing load on the RAID controller is almost non-existent, writes are much faster. Of course the downside is that the RAID 10 only gives you 50% of the total installed capacity ( 4 x 2TB Hard Drives yields a 4TB RAID 10 Drive), while RAID 5 gives you 67% of the total installed capacity ( 4 x 2TB Hard Drives yields a 6TB RAID 5 Drive). There is another advantage to RAID 10 though - In both a RAID 10 and a RAID 5, a single drive failure should not produce any downtime; but if a second drive were to fail before the first is replaced the RAID 5 Drive is done, the RAID 10 has a 67% chance of still being fine (if setup as a RAID 0 stripe set of two RAID 1 mirror sets).
