14 best 2 5 ssd drives
2.5" SSD drives are a type of Internal Solid State Drive commonly used for data storage and computer upgrades. Here's what you need to know about them:
Form Factor: The "2.5" in the name refers to the physical size of the drive. These SSDs are designed to fit into the standard 2.5-inch drive bays found in most laptops and desktop computers. This makes them a popular choice for upgrading older systems with traditional hard drives (HDDs) to improve performance.
Solid State Technology: 2.5" SSDs use NAND flash memory technology, which is different from traditional HDDs that use spinning disks. This means there are no moving parts in SSDs, resulting in faster data access, reduced power consumption, and improved durability.
Performance: 2.5" SSDs are known for their excellent performance. They offer faster data transfer speeds, quicker boot times, and reduced application loading times compared to HDDs. This performance boost is one of the main reasons people choose to upgrade their computers with SSDs.
Capacity: These drives are available in a range of capacities, from 120GB to 4TB or more. Users can choose the capacity that best suits their needs, whether it's for a simple OS and application drive or for storing a large amount of data.
Compatibility: Most 2.5" SSDs use the SATA interface, making them compatible with a wide range of computers. SATA III is the most common interface, offering speeds of up to 6 gigabits per second (Gbps). Some newer SSDs may use the NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) interface, which is even faster but requires a compatible motherboard.
Installation: Installing a 2.5" SSD is relatively straightforward. It often involves removing the old HDD, replacing it with the SSD, and reinstalling the operating system or cloning the existing drive. Many SSDs come with cloning software to simplify the process.
Reliability: SSDs are generally more reliable than HDDs because they have no moving parts. They are less susceptible to shock and vibration damage, making them a good choice for laptops and portable devices.
Price: While SSD prices have come down over the years, they are still more expensive per gigabyte than HDDs. However, the performance benefits and durability often justify the higher cost.
Endurance: SSD endurance is measured in terabytes written (TBW). It represents how much data can be written to the drive before it is expected to wear out. Higher-capacity SSDs often have higher endurance ratings.
Brand Variety: Various manufacturers produce 2.5" SSDs, including well-known brands like Samsung, Crucial, Western Digital, Kingston, and more. It's essential to choose a reputable brand when purchasing an SSD.
In summary, 2.5" SSD drives are a popular choice for improving computer performance and storage. They offer fast performance, increased durability, and come in various capacities to suit different needs. When upgrading or purchasing an SSD, it's important to consider factors like capacity, compatibility, and brand reputation.

User questions & answers
Question: | How do you format this and why is that necessary for new drives? What stops me from plugging it right into my system and getting started |
Answer: | Depends on what you're doing. You can connect this to your system but new drives will not be functional until you initialize them and create a partition under Disk Management. Your other option (what I did with this drive) is to disconnect your existing drive and then install this (while PC is off if that's not obvious). Then you have a blank drive in your system and can boot from an OS disc like Windows 10. A fresh Windows 10 installation will still recognize the drive and be able to initialize it properly as well as create the necessary partitions. Let me know if you have any follow up questions. |
Question: | Hi i have questions how the better samsung evo 970 or wd black 250gb high-performance nvme pcie gen3 8 gb/s m |
Answer: | Reviews have suggested that the two drives are VERY close in performance (nearly within margin of error of tests). The WD Black gen3 devices were the first ones to actually challenge the 960 EVO NVMe drives for dominance of the high-performance consumer grade SSDs. You can't go wrong with either one, as far as I can tell, at least from reviews. They'll provide insignificant differences in speed/performance between the two. Therefore, you should purchase based on price and (if it's important to you) warranty. Note also that the WD drive caps at 1TB in size (vs. 2 TB for the 970 EVO), so if you wanted to go that route, there's only one choice. As far as "best high-performance consumer level" NVMe drive, the 970 EVO and the 3rd generation WD black are on an even playing field, and both at the top of the stack (this ignores the "prosumer" market devices like the 970 Pro where prices are much higher per gigabyte). Note that it's possible that you won't notice any performance difference between these high-performance NVMe drives and, say, a high-quality SATA drive. |
Question: | I want the 2 TB, is it possible |
Answer: | If you find someone with TB, you can have as much of it as you want! |
Question: | Whats the difference between this one and the 960 pro |
Answer: | The 960 Pro is from the previous generation. The newer one is the 970 Pro. Comparing the 960 Pro to the newer 970 EVO is a bit difficult because they aren't in the same class. The Primary difference between the Pro and the EVO is the Pro uses MLC (Multi Level Cell) whereas the EVO uses a Triple Level Cell. Case and point with the EVO. You can get a 2tb EVO drive but the Pro tops out at 1tb. The silicon is able to get more storage space for the real estate with TLC. On the other hand MLC is more reliable and more hearty than TLC which is why the Pro is using the MLC. Maybe you want to know about write endurance. One thing to keep in mind about write endurance is you will probably never come close to hitting it's limits unless you are using the drive all the time to save and load large files like a professional would. Also, the write endurance of the 1tb 970 Pro is double the write endurance of the 512gb 970 Pro. hardware review sites and done tests of the actual write cycle longevity of these drives and these drives last longer than what they're rated for. More than likely in your case, these drives will be long obsolete by the time they're half worn out. The write endurance of the 500gb 970 EVO is 300TB write cycles. Sequential R/W of the 970 EVO is 3400MB/s read and 2300MB/s write. I believe the 970 evo uses a Single Level Cell cache to boost write speeds. The write endurance of the 512gb 960 Pro is 400TB/wc. Sequential R/W of the 960 Pro is 3500MB/s read and 2100MB/s write The 970 series is more refined. Both use the updated Phoenix controller whereas the 960 series uses the Polaris controller. Both the 960 Pro and 970 EVO have a 5 year warranty. The older 960 EVO only has a 3 year warranty. The answer to this question between the 960 Pro and 970 Evo is simple........... get whichever is cheaper. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Se demora de 1 a 2 meses en llegar a Colombia |
Answer: | A mi me llego en 5 días, fue rápido!! |
Question: | hi, i'm new to this, does it work for an asus rog strix b450 f gaming |
Answer: | for anyone else reading this, YES this will work for the Rog Strix B450-F gaming motherboard. The other user that answered saying you'd need an adapter is wrong. The Rog Strix B450-F Gaming mobo has two M.2 slots. I know, I have the same setup. |
Question: | How do you clone this drive |
Answer: | The recommendation of Ghost as a cloning program is terrible. The consumer version of Norton Ghost was discontinued sometime back in 2013-2014. It was designed specifically for Windows 7 and is thus obsolete for today's hardware and software requirements. It's replacement, Symantec Ghost, was designed primarily for enterprise use. so unless you're working in an IT department environment, it's probably the worst choice for the home consumer who simply wants to upgrade their personal PC or laptop to a faster M.2 NVMW drive. There are plenty of free cloning software applications out there: AOMEI, Macrium, Clonezilla, and others. Go on the web, look up "free cloning software", read the reviews. I personally would go to the WD support website and take a look at their user forum. There are plenty of users there who have had hands on experience cloning to their WD M.2 NVMW devices; they provide detail as to what software works and what doesn't work for cloning. |
Question: | Does it come with screw if not what's the size of screw |
Answer: | The WD blue SN550 does NOT come with screws. M3 screws should do the trick on 2.5" SSD Dell systems. You should have to go up a size for a 3.5" drive to a 6-32 (head pattern varies). Start with an M3 then if sloppy, use the thicker 6-32 screw. |

Question: | Will this drive work with a mid 2012 macbook pro? I haven't seen this model addressed yet. Thanks |
Answer: | Yes. I just installed this drive in my son's mid-2012 13" Macbook Pro (non-retina) and the speed difference is amazing! I would recommend first updating your operating system to Mac OS X High Sierra which also updates the recovery partition on your Mac. When you install your new drive, hold down Option-Command R when powering on to boot into the recovery partition which will then allow you format and install the OS. If you happen to see a message that the Recovery server is not available, you probably just need to set the Macbook clock to the correct time with the command: date mmddhhmmyy. For example: date 0128140018 will set the date to January 28, 2pm, 2018. The date is set through the Terminal app, also available on the Recovery partition. |
Question: | Does it include the 7mm to 9.5mm adapter |
Answer: | Hello, Thank you for contacting Crucial. Yes, every new purchase of the MX500 will come with the 7mm to 9.5mm spacer. You will also receive a download link for free cloning software, as well as a link for online instructions to copy all of your data from your old drive, and move it over to the new one. User questions & answers
Question: | Clone software available or not? desc "ssd dashboard and cloning software download (4) " would like to clone my c drive to it |
Answer: | Yes. It should work just fine in any laptop that accepts 2.5" SATA drives. For MacBook Pros, that means machines through the mid-2012 model. Don't forget to move your Torx screws over to the new drive! |
Question: | Is this compatible and does it fit a late 2011 macbook pro to replace the sata disk hard drive |
Answer: | Yes you can download the Samsung Magic Data Transfer software that will transfer ALL the data including the operating system. . A 250 will work fine for only 100gigs of data. If it was me I would get the 500GB drive because it will hold so much data you can always transfer the drive to your next computer. My belief is it's better to have to much than not enough. I currently own the 1 TB Evo and the 1 TB Pro both Samsung. If you are on a budget go with the 250. Good Luck! If you have the cash go long term you are bound to gather more data! |
Question: | Does it come with the required sata cable |
Answer: | Yes windows 10 is supported I just added this to a new Acer Laptop that has Windows 10 Home. It did not come with a disk for any software. You will need to go to their website and get the Data Migration software and load that to clone the drive. Also get the SAMSUNG MAGICIAN software, that will optimize the drive with a number of settings and let you know about firmware updates for the drive. https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/download/tools/ |
Question: | Mlc or tlc? thanks |
Answer: | I used the “Apricorn Notebook Drive Upgrade Kit”. It is available on Amazon under: “Apricorn SATA Wire Notebook Hard Drive Upgrade Kit with USB 3.0 Connection ASW-USB3-25 (Grey)”. Even though it says note book upgrade kit, it works for a PC as well. I used it to upgrade my Laptop and my desktop. I like it because it comes with the cable and the cloning software to make a copy of your current hard Drive. All you have to do is connect your SATA SSD drive to the Apricorn cable, and plug it in to your USB port (use USB 3.0 port if you have it), then run the cloning software on the CD it comes with. The software will ask for the source drive (which is the drive you want to copy) and the destination drive (which is the new SSD). After that, you just start the clone and it does a bit-for-bit clone of the source drive. When it completes, just shut down your computer and swap the drives. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work with a mid-2009 macbook |
Answer: | Linda, Apple has released multiple models MacBook mid-2009 computers that based on legacy Serial-ATA (SATA) data storage interface by today's standards. Kingston SATA-3 standard A400 SSD is backward compatible with older technology and works well in the older MacBook. Keep in mind that computer would not take full advantage of the A400 higher performance due to system hardware limitation. It may be possible to look up SSD installation reference online if you provide exact MacBook model number or manufacturer part number. Thank you. |
Question: | will this fit a toshiba satellite 2 in 1 laptop? who will be doing the installation and data transfer |
Answer: | Hello Ae, Toshiba released multiple generations Satellite 2-in-1 laptop that supported different internal data storage devices and upgrade possibility. Please provide exact Satellite model number or laptop manufacturer part number found on system underside to help determine system hardware configuration and recommended upgrades. Kingston A400 series SSD shipped with drive only without data migration software. End user or professional computer technician is responsible to obtain suitable software to transfer data. It is possible to arrange professional computer services thru Amazon to carry out SSD installation and data transfer. Check Amazon "Get Professional Installation Service" for more details. Thank you! |
Question: | i have a toshiba satellite with serial ata-150 interface. will SATA-3 interface drives work |
Answer: | Hello Dave, SATA 3.0 (6Gb/s) A400 series SSD by design is compatible with legacy SATA interface. SA400S37/120G will work fine in the older Toshiba Satellite, although not performing up to the advertised SSD speeds due to host system limitations, nonetheless A400 will outperform original hard disk drive to help enhance the system overall performance. A400 should physically fit the notebook internal drive bay using existing mounting hardware. PC will automatically detect the new SSD upon power up. Fresh install operation system and applications from original installation CD on the SSD as you would on standard disk drives. Thank you!-Kai @ Kingston TS |
Question: | Does it come with cloning software? pny ssd comes with one. so i want to make sure if it does |
Answer: | Hey Vineet Chawla, The Kingston A400 series SSD does not include drive cloning software or SATA cables. It is intended for users who refer to use their existing cloning tools and hardware with the SSD. If you do require cloning software, you may want to look into a Windows PC based application titled "Reflect" by Macrium, or Carbon Copy for Mac computers. Either application is available free to download from the internet. Thank you! - Chris @KingstonTechnology |

User questions & answers
Question: | What am i missing, when i plug it in, nothing happens - my computer doesn't show it at all. do i need to download something |
Answer: | I have two of these and am about to get a third. No, you don't need to download anything (at least on windows and linux computers). I reformat mine to NTFS because I switch between OS's. One thing to note the usb "A" adapter is "notched" and will only fit on one way completely, you probably got a bad one, it happens, send it back if no luck. |
Question: | Can I use this to backup my PC AND also save files from my macbook? Id like to save files from both on one HD?!?! (2012 macbook & HP Desktop |
Answer: | Basically, my home setup is an all-Mac setup. What I did immediately after I got it out of the box was to format it and partition it 200 GB HFS+ and 800 GB APFS. The HFS+ partition is used for Time Machine, and the APFS partition has four volumes (capacity is allocated dynamically between volumes within the APFS partition). How I would use this in a mixed environment: one HFS+ partition for Time Machine (you can't use APFS partitions for Time Machine); one APFS partition for the files that will be used only with a Mac; and one ExFAT partition for instances where you need to be able to access the file in Windows and on a Mac. Also, make sure you keep that USB-C to USB-A connector that comes with the drive; it comes with about a 6-inch cable with USB-C connectors at both ends. |
Question: | Is this drive good for running an OS from |
Answer: | YES! I have 2 that I use for this, be aware you may have to change your system setup to use, On mine I have to change SATA controller mode to AHCI from RAID and UEFI to Legacy support and boot priority to Legacy first (Lenovo). Once you have those setting fixed you will be amazed how fast it will run. I run fedora on a 1TB for storage and Fedora Securrity Spin on a 500 GB drive to use to recover data and fix customers machines. I have also run CentOS and Linux Mint with no issues. |
Question: | Can you please tell me if this storage is in Solid state or is it a spinning disc? Thank you |
Answer: | The name of this item is: "Sandisk Portable SSD (SOLID STATE Drive)"......... That clearly means it's NOT SOLID STATE. No they're/I am just joking. In all serious-ness though: it is indeed a "Solid State drive" with no moving/spinning disks. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I want to add this as a 2nd drive. Does it come with cables |
Answer: | No. You need to open your computer and see if your motherboard has a plug for a second hard drive. If it doesn't, you could take out your CD player and use it's plug. |
Question: | Does it comes with cloning the old drive software like samsung evo |
Answer: | Thank you for contacting SK hynix SSD. You can download the free cloning software from SK hynix SSD homepage. |
Question: | Besides the price point, what is the difference between this and the samsung 1tb |
Answer: | The SK Hynix is faster than the Samsung. Just FYI,.. Hynix makes chips for just about “EVERYBODY” they just haven’t made SSD drives per se’ and marketed them under their own name until recently. Chances are, other SSDs “might” be using Hynix chips. It is a very fast and solid SSD. There have been numerous reports of Samsung issues as of 2018 so they aren’t as reliable as most think. Still generally speaking Samsung SSDs are decent. PCWORLD did a review in 2020 and rated the SD Hynix much better than the Samsung in speed with the same reliability and 5-year warranty. I own both SSDs and have had no problems with either. The Hynix is however the faster drive. I choose the SD Hynix. |
Question: | Never heard of this brand are their products Reliable? Do they have good customer service and return policies |
Answer: | Just a bit of a history lesson. LG used to make semiconductors back in the day, as did Hyundai. But the competition was too hot in South Korea and there was a financial crisis in 1997 (like Greece 2009). Conglomerates shifted and merged businesses (Samsung sold its car production to Renault, Hyundai bought Kia, etc.). In line with the times, LG sold its semiconductor business to Hyundai in exchange for something else (I think it was Hyundai moving out of the display business). So it was Hyundai Hynix for a long time. More recently, Hynix was sold off to SK (another top 5 conglomerate in South Korea). So here we are in 2020, looking at an SK Hynix SSD. Like others have said, Hynix has been a household name for computer nerds for a long time. The top 3 memory manufacturers have been Samsung, Micron, and Hynix for decades. |
