User questions & answers

Question: Is the unit noisy, ie is there a fan
Answer: There is no fan on my BX1500M. Is quiet on Utility power and only a very low hum on battery power if you place your ear close to it.
Question: Does the 1500va indicate it's amp hour (how many hours it will run?) ie 100 volts x 15 amps for 1 hour? or 100 volts x 5 amps for 3 hours
Answer: The 1500VA/900watt rating has absolutely NOTHING to do with the run time. It is a rating of the maximum output level for a very short period of time. The BX1500M uses a 12 Volt 9 Ampere hour battery that means it stores 108 watt/hours of energy. The inverter (the electronic circuit that converts the stored 12 Volt DC power to 117 Volt AC power) is far from 100% efficient, and will not operate if the battery is near complete discharge, so the actual stored energy output for this device is 68 minutes at a 100 watt load. At the full load output of 900 watts the UPS will provide power for about 5 to 6 minutes before the battery is depleted and it shuts down.
Question: Have a few months lost power and this goes out immediately. is there a set up that i missed? light on with power. thanks
Answer: I did the same thing on my first unit, didn't plug in the battery. Went for a long time because the rest of the unit was working ok and I WAS SURE it would work if needed. It never would switch to safe shut down mode. FINALLY I opened the unit and found the battery disconnected ! Will make sure the next unit will have the battery hooked up as per directions.
Question: Pure sine wave? or Modified
Answer: It is in between. Though not pure sine wave, it has many little steps, vs Modified (modified square wave) which is simply 0 + 0 - 0 + 0 - 0 +... (3 status levels) A very good explanation and comparison graphs are shown at: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/812247-best-ups/ Hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: weird Q: a recent outage trapped elder lady in her power recliner. can this be used
Answer: We have a dual electric recliner sofa. After being temporarily "trapped" during an power outage, we purchased the APC UPS, 600VA BE600M1 APC UPS Battery Backup system. This week we had a 3 day outage, and the UPS worked like a champ. A must have for anybody with electric recliner chair or sofa.
Question: How long will it power my system while the power is off
Answer: I had my desktop computer, 2 monitors, and my modem/router combo plugged into the ups battery power. It lasted less than 20 minutes when the power went out, and there was no additional warning when the battery was about to shut off. It just had this intermittent double beep for about 15- 20 minutes, then bang, everything off. Pretty disappointed. I guess you get what you pay for.
Question: How often does the battery need to be replaced
Answer: I have had APC batteries last 7-8 years, the shortest was 13 months (12-month warranty, figures!). I have bought replacement batteries from other vendors, don't last at all. I had a beautiful APOC SUA1500, Batteries Plus sold me 2 x SLA batteries duct taped together (yes, literally) and they were NOT made for a backup power suppl;y as they stated, leaked, corroded the entire inside of my very expensive unit! I certainly regret that decision! Batteries Plus said they had the APC batteries, but when I got to the store they did not, ordering them, would take a long time, so I tried their option - will NEVER shop at Batteries Plus again! Just yesterday I had one APC battery die. Bought new unit Dec 17, 2017, today is March 31, 2020. Just over 3 years, their average. No complaints.
Question: Does it have ethernet ports
Answer: No, and generally you'll want to avoid surge protectors or UPS's with built in surge protectors that have multiple ports (i.e. coaxial, Ethernet, phone) since these devices turn on at different voltage levels. So once a surge comes in on the LINE (HOT) side of the AC outlet and the voltage has reached a certain level, the surge will be directed to both the NEUTRAL and the SAFETY GROUND, but as soon as that happens, some of the surge makes it's way into the COAX, ETHERNET, and PHONE ports and if you have something plugged into those ports then it goes into the devices. A recent study (see: http://incompliancemag.com/article/lightning-surge-damage-to-ethernet-and-pots-ports-connected-to-inside-wiring/) confirms this. The best place to secure PHONE, and COAX connections is where they enter the house and where they can have a short (less than 10 foot connection to a buried GROUND ROD). If you secure phone & coax at the service entrance and protect your electronics with Type 3 Surge Protectors you won't need to secure the Ethernet connections. Also, it's not a good idea to rely on the Surge Protector inside a UPS as those have a higher clamping voltage generally in the 650-800 Volt range and that means until the voltage reaches 800 volts, your electronics is getting zapped. You can't plug a UPS with an MOV surge protector into an existing MOV based surge protector for compliance (safety) issues, but you can plug a UPS with an MOV surge protector or an MOV surge protector into a Series Mode filter since the filter does not rely on sacrificial MOV's. The Series Mode filter starts to work at 121.4 VAC on a 120 VAC line and it totally eliminates the surge instead of diverting it and hoping the surge can make it's way back through your house wiring to the buried ground rod from the main electrical panel.

User questions & answers

Question: How tall are the digits on the LCD indicating the runtime? And is the LCD's viewing angle such that it can be read with the UPS on the floor
Answer: The Blue display total size is 2" x 2" and sharp and clear. Digits for line voltage are about 1/2 inch and the run time is a 1/4 approx. bar above digits. I would say if you can see your digital alarm clock from where you want to place the unit you will be able to see quite well. Also UPS status can be displayed by supplied software with unit.
Question: I have a harmon pellet stove Mo.# XXV start amps 4.2 run amps 2.8 will this unit be adequit to run unit till I shut it down
Answer: I wouldn't try it, according to Ohm's law (assuming standard US 120 household voltage 120v*4.2Amps=Watts) your starting wattage is 504 which exceeds the maximum recommended wattage on this device. You should look for one with a higher rating.
Question: Is there a UPS like this that can automatically power cycle the router when internet connection dies
Answer: The UPS unit will maintain a/c power to all devices connected to the battery backup outlets of the UPS unit. Loss of internet connectivity is a separate issue which would be dependent on the "cable" or "dsl" etc service provider. You might need to reboot the router after internet connectivity has been lost.
Question: Does this unit come with a compabible USB cable or does it have to be purchased separately
Answer: It comes with a semi-proprietary cable in that the end that plugs into the UPS is like Ethernet. The other end is a standard USB so don't lose it.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this allow power thru after a surge disables the protective circuitry
Answer: It does lay flat against the electrical outlet, I have a shelf unit in front of it and there is no conflict, although for safety reasons I would not push furniture too closely up against it.
Question: Does this unit have a keyhole screw slots or some manner of attachment on the back so it can be mounted securely instead of just lying loosely
Answer: Here is the data spec sheet on this APC (Schneidr electrc) surge protector. It has a 40v - Let through voltage (120v + 40v). So thats a 160v clamp voltage before the surge protector kicks in and starts to absorb the surge. https://download.schneider-electric.com/files?p_File_Name=P11VT3_DATASHEET_WW_en-WW.pdf&p_Reference=P11VT3_APC_DATASHEET And just in case the link dies, here is the schneidr electrc product page to search for this model (P11VT3) APC surge protector. Type “P11VT3” in the search box in the webpage listed below. https://www.se.com/us/en/
Question: Does this surge protector have a right angle plug so furniture can be pushed close to the wall
Answer: The clamping voltage certified and stamped on the unit is 500v not the advertised 330v. I am not an expert, but in my opinion, it is unlikely to protect you from the first surge or any subsequent surges. I don't recommend this unit.
Question: does anyone know the clamping voltage for this surge protector
Answer: The item is orderable by cord length: You have to select it when you order. There are click-buttons on the order screen - click the length you want. If you click 6' cord, you get a 6' cord, if you click to order a 12' cord, you get 12', and so forth.

User questions & answers

Question: If the input/output voltage for the addon battery pack is 12vdc, could a deep cycle be used by the unit in theory? The packs that power it are simply sealed wet cells anyway
Answer: To a different APC model, I tried 2 deep cycle gel-cells that overloaded the charging unit and resulted in a fire. As FNC said, the inverter cannot handle the load. APC does make devices to which external APC batteries can be added, not cheap though. APC also has a 2200 watt unit that plugs into a normal 15A 110 volt socket.
Question: How long can the battery keep on a 800 watt machine when the power is off
Answer: IT has 2 of 12V batteries hooked in series to make a 24V power supply. If you run using a steady half the rated wattage (433 watts) it will last about 30 minutes. But wattage consumption on most electronics is difficult to measure. A device may pull 40W at one moment and 400W at another. No chart or list will be correct for your equipment. APC also likes to make you think it will last longer by giving you best times possible. You should buy a wattage meter (under $25 generally) and measure the actual equipment you are using. Get the peak VA value used. Double that value and buy a UPS based on that doubled value. If you use a UPS backup regularly at any more than 50% of its rating, you'll have very miniscule times for it to keep things running and will be replacing batteries more frequently. Buy the biggest UPS you can afford if you want more time. Also only with this BR1500G you can add the supplemental pack which adds 4 more batteries to the original 6. The supplemental pack triples your up time. I run about 400W on a computer, 2 monitors, a printer, an LED TV, a high speed modem/router, a TIVO, a DVD player and a small LED light. Using the BR1500G and its supplemental pack, I get about 30-45 minutes with all this stuff running. But note I'm only using about half the rated wattage. I'd only get 1/3rd that amount of time with the BR1500G alone. I have 2 3D printers. Each one has its own APC BR1500G UPS and stays up about 45 minutes when power fails. You can never get too big of a UPS (except maybe for your unit's weight and physical size). Buy as large as you can afford to and you will be less likely to be disappointed. Also never daisy chain them together or use extension cords or plugs without the earth ground 3rd prong. These units will conduct huge amounts of current and will get very warm when discharging or charging. Leave them charging all the time. Don't unplug them or let them discharge often or you'll be replacing batteries more often. These are for short duration power outages. They are not meant to substitute as a generator to power devices. Never hook high wattage appliances like microwaves or refrigerators or washer dryers to them. That will damage your units.
Question: Description says surge protection is rated at 355 joules -- not much protection at that low rate. Is this correct? Thanks
Answer: You are correct. APC's site lists it at 354 joules. That is pretty low compared to a good power strip at nearly 10 times that rating. If you live in an area with surge problems (i.e. lightning), then you could plug the UPS into a good power strip first ... or rely on APC's connected equipment protection warranty.
Question: What kind of audible alarm does this unit have? Is it a simple beep and it over, or is it like a screeching banshee chasing its prey
Answer: It is a simple beep, easily silenced with a touch of a button. I've been using it in a 5th wheel as I travel and has been very reliable, especially in parks where power is not super reliable.
