13 best vhf radios

Very High Frequency (VHF) radios are a type of two-way radio commonly used in various applications, including marine and automotive contexts. Here's what you need to know about VHF radios:

  1. Frequency Range:

    • VHF radios operate in the frequency range of 30 MHz to 300 MHz, which places them in the very high frequency portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.
  2. Marine Two-Way Radios:

    • In marine contexts, VHF radios are often referred to as "marine VHF radios" or "marine two-way radios."
    • They are crucial communication tools for boaters, sailors, and other watercraft operators. These radios are used for ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communication, as well as for safety purposes.
  3. Channels and Licensing:

    • Marine VHF radios typically operate on a set of designated channels. Channel 16, in particular, is internationally recognized as the distress and calling frequency for marine emergencies.
    • To use a marine VHF radio, operators often need to obtain a license or certification to ensure proper use and adherence to regulations.
  4. Line of Sight Communication:

    • VHF radio signals are line-of-sight, which means their range is limited by the curvature of the Earth. In marine applications, the range can vary depending on factors like antenna height and atmospheric conditions.
  5. Antennas:

    • The effectiveness of VHF radios can be greatly influenced by the quality and height of the antenna used.Higher antennas can extend the communication range.
  6. Emergency Communication:

    • VHF radios are essential for emergency communication at sea. In addition to Channel 16, there are other channels reserved for specific types of communication, such as Channel 9 for hailing and distress.
  7. Automotive and Land Use:

    • VHF radios are also used in land-based applications, such as in certain off-road vehicles and industrial settings where long-range communication is required.
  8. Interference and Regulations:

    • Users of VHF radios must adhere to regulations and etiquette to avoid interference with other users and ensure safety, particularly in the marine environment.
  9. Accessories and Features:

    • VHF radios may come with features like Digital Selective Calling (DSC), which allows for automated distress calls and location sharing.
    • Many VHF radios are also designed to be water-resistant or waterproof, making them suitable for marine environments.
  10. Maintenance and Care:

    • Regular maintenance and care, including checking and maintaining the antenna, is essential to ensure the reliability of VHF radios.

VHF radios play a critical role in communication and safety, especially in marine environments. Whether for marine, automotive, or industrial use, understanding the principles of VHF radio operation and adhering to regulations is essential for effective and safe communication.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this have a scan all channel feature? Also, does this use a common coax antenna connection
Answer: Yes, you can scan all channels or build a specific scan list. It uses a common PL-259 coax connector. SO-239 on the radio.
Question: So this fixed mount does NOT come with the exterior trim ring for dash mounting
Answer: no
Question: does this require an attena
Answer: Yes. It will require a VHF marine antenna. Standard Horizon does not make antennas.
Question: Does this broadcast and receive normal cb frequencies
Answer: No it’s a FM marine band radio
Question: Can readout be set for degrees, minutes, seconds
Answer: No...but converting is easy... Example: 38 15.625' is 38 15' 37.5' (.625*60=37.5) Also, one cannot change which system is used. Also, although it says BeiDou, I do not think it can use that as I display only shows GPS and GLONASS satellites and there is not menu setting that I can find to change that. But BeiDou is not needed and less accurage.
Question: can this unit help find survey pins
Answer: If you mean by location then yes it can give you the general area to search.
Question: Is their an owners manual for this unit
Answer: It comes with a folded sheet of instructions--the instructions are easy to read. The units measure position roughly accurate to about 5m and measure distance and areas with accuracies related to that accuracy. Note: Although the units advertise as doing BeiDou besides GPS and GLONASS, the units that I have received only do GPS and GLONASS. In the photo you can see a row of bars for GPS and a row for GLONASS. There is no third row for BeiDou despite the advertising that it will also use BeiDou.
Question: Is there a spanish setting for this gps
Answer: No but the language use is very little and it is simple to operate.

User questions & answers

Question: Can the programming be done on an Apple Mac
Answer: Yes it can and it's relatively straightforward IF you have the right cable. You need CHIRP http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Download (get the latest daily build) and then you need this cable: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HUB0ONK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. The beauty of this particular cable is zero drivers are needed, the Mac (at least Yosemite) automatically recognizes it. I wrote about my experience on this at my blog: https://chris.gonyea.com/2015/03/setting-up-a-baofeng-uv-5r-2-chrip-on-my-mac/
Question: Can I get basic NOAA Weather stations on this everywhere (or, everywhere 'within reason
Answer: Yes. NOAA uses 7 frequencies from 162.400 to 162.550 MHz. You can check the National Weather Service website at for specific frequencies used in your area. There are over 1000 stations, covering all 50 states. Most NOAA stations operate with fairly high power, some with as much as 1000 watts, so they should be very easy to hear.
Question: If you transmitt with this unit how can effected partys trace to the source
Answer: Bottom line is this: If you can put out an RF signal you can be found. Yes many variables go into finding the source and they can find moving signals also. Tens of Thousands of hams and or T-Hunters or Transmitter Hunters are around the globe. If you screw around with the HAM bands you will get caught.Get your Ham license it's easy and enjoy the hobby.
Question: Can this be used as a FRS 2-way radio
Answer: Reasons this makes a good "walkie talkie" (even though it is a HT - Handy Talkie 1) Removable antenna - can upgrade your antenna for your specific needs/significant improvement to performance 2) Can program the channels - not just FRS/GMRS channels 2a) Can set adjust power levels to more legal levels 2b) Can program NOAA freqs giving more value 2c) Can use/listen MURS (Multi Use Radio Service) - license free but kinda like GMRS 2d) Can set channels to receive only so nobody transmits channels they should not (NOAA) 2e) Can listen to school bus drivers, some fire departments and anybody else who uses radio (see 2d) 3) Can get test free GMRS license to legally use GMRS at full handheld power 4) Can get you a HAM license (technician class) and program Amateur UHF/VHF channels - impress your friends and ladies at bars 5) Can monitor two channels at once 6) Lots off menu options - customizable 7) Will learn about radios, "bands", frequencies and other cool stuff 8) Has more power than most walkie talkies - i.e. better range - especially if you upgrade the antenna Reasons this DOES NOT makes a good "walkie talkie": 1) To program you need to purchase the programming cable and to download CHIRP (freeware). Of course only one cable is needs for all the radios 2) Have to read instructions, try stuff on computer/radio and have it not work and you need to figure out why and maybe a youtube video or two.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this radio as a scanner to listen to great lake freighter radio traffic
Answer: Yes, but if you only want to listen to voice traffic, a cheaper VHF, without DSC and GPS, will also work fine. Most are about $100 cheaper. This radio is suitable for recreational vessels involved in racing and coastal cruising.
Question: is this pair of radios? (2 radios for
Answer: Nope, it is a single radio. The two-way designation means it both receives and transmits, as apposed to, say, your car radio, which only receives.
Question: how far off shore will this radio work
Answer: Dennis, I have only used it in local waters but believe this VHF will work 15 to 20 miles away. If you go off shore (15 to 50 miles) you should rely on a VHF with large antenna etc.
Question: If I buy 3 of these radios can I talk and listen to others on the same channel
Answer: Recent FCC change makes it legal to talk from shore to a boat on the water. Must restrict oneself to marine related traffic. Effective January 2017, the use of portable VHF radio ashore is allowed, “so long as it is limited to enhancing the usefulness of marine VHF radios without negatively affecting maritime communications.” From BoatUS Magazine, April-May, 2017

User questions & answers

Question: Does it transmit gps when transmitting a mayday
Answer: No, this is not a GPS equipped unit. You'll have to spend significantly more for that capability.
Question: When will you ship my order
Answer: They shipped my order to NZ within a few days
Question: Can the Atlantis 155 be recharged with an optional or universal AC charger
Answer: The unit I purchased included a 120v AC adapter. If using a universal type AC charger, make sure to pay attention to the voltage/amperage/polarity requirements as you can destroy electronics very easily if using the wrong type. This information can be found in the included manual. We really like this radio for what it is, but do not expect a $500 radio at this price.
Question: Want to connect the handheld to my mast antenna that has PL259 Is the antenna on the 155 removable and what type of connection is it
Answer: Kids have it at beech house might not see it for weeks

User questions & answers

Question: I can only hit two where I live. Is the extra 3 watts going to gain any range
Answer: ANTENNA ANTENNA ANTENNA The extra watts will do less to improve transmission and reception than a quality antenna. As others have said, to increase your signal strength at the receiving radio by one S unit you have to quadruple the power output. The difference between the UV-5R standard radio and the "8 watt" "high power" radios is only a doubling of power. If you are on the move use the Nagoya 771 antenna (and watch you don't poke out your eye). If you are stationary, a homebrew 2 meter dipole or the Ed Fong antenna will significantly improve your transmission and reception. Amateur Extra HAM instructor VP local HAM club
Question: what kind of range can I expect
Answer: With the included antenna, you will get about 10 kilometers on open area land. About 5 kilometers in suburban settings. In urban settings, aabout a kilometer or two. In a boat, a bit further than 10kilometers. With the Nagoya extended antenna, you can make 20 kilometers, more or less, on open ground. However, use an external antenna on the roof of a building and you can double that range! Power does increase range. But, antenna increases range far more than more power.
Question: I am trying to receive frequencies in the 800mhz range but it will not allow me to enter
Answer: You can program these for whatever frequencies you want by downloading CHIRP and modifying the radio drivers with a text editor... Then just change the frequency range to 900mhz or whatever you want... I would not suggest trying to transmit at those frequencies but people have had some success with receiving frequencies out of band that way... You may also want to try an RF downconverter if you would rather go the hardware way instead of the software way... More info at http://www.brickolore.com/2012/05/baofeng-uv-5r-extreme-receive.html
Question: Which frequencies will I be required to become licensed for? How do I know which repeaters I might use and their associated membership fees? Thank you
Answer: You cannot use this radio in any unlicensed frequency. It is not type accepted for any radio service and is therefore illegal to sell, advertise, market, or ship to anywhere in the US. It is probably legal to use in a Ham band if you have a ham license. Ham licenses come with some great benefits, such as being able to use un-aproved radios, it is well worth the effort to get one. BTW, I have two of these radios. They work about as well as a UV-5R, of which they are a derivative They just over-powered a 5 watt radio to make it spit out 8 watts. It gets you VERY little extra distance and the transmission is really really dirty. It blows all over the 2 meter bands. If you want to see what the FCC does to out of service marketing Google "FCC DA-18-980A1". This radio has no legal use in the US except on the ham bands by hams. It is very illegal to use for MURS and FRS, and not even OK for FMRS. It transmits so dirty it is pretty obvious to anyone with a good HR rig with a display or an FCC truck that you are using a BF-F8HP. It's got a rather unique signal signature. If you want a Baofeng get one of these. They are all certified part 90 which makes them legal to sell and ship, and no questions about using them for Ham use. And get a ham license, it really opens up your options. User questions & answers

Question: How do i activate my radio
Answer: Go to https://www.boatus.com/MMSI/MMSI/Home and register for an MMSI number. Once the MMSI number has been obtained it must be entered into the radio. Push the "CALL/SET" to enter the DSC menu then look for the MMSI entry option. Follow the prompts.
Question: I have a cobra marine radio f57b. Can I use the radio without requesting a mmsi
Answer: Yes
Question: Does it work in the Middle east
Answer: i dont know works great midwest
Question: WHAT IS CLASS-D
Answer: Both category A and D radios can send and receive digitally encoded distress calls on channel 70, which is reserved exclusively for digital communications. Category A radios, however have two separate receivers, with one constantly tuned to channel 70. Category A radios are therefore more flexible and capable of delivering advanced communication capabilities. With the press of a button, all DSC equipped VHF radios can send a distress call in digital form on channel 70. The call, sent in much less than one second, includes your unique identification number (MMSI) and if the radio is connected to a GPS or Loran C, the precise location of your boat. The distress call will continue to be sent until it is answered by another station. The station hearing the call will likely call your radio on channel 16 or, in the case of the Coast Guard on 22A and begin the process of bringing you the help you need. Having a highly automatic way of making your need for assistance known has obvious advantages.
