10 best refractor telescope with tripods

A refractor telescope with a tripod is a popular type of optical instrument used for astronomical observation and terrestrial viewing. It falls under the category of refractors, which are telescopes that use lenses to bend and focus light. Here's what you should know about refractor telescopes with tripods:

  1. Optical Design: Refractor telescopes use lenses to collect and focus light. They consist of an objective lens at the front of the telescope and an eyepiece at the rear. The objective lens gathers and refracts light to form an image that is magnified by the eyepiece.

  2. Tripod Mount: The tripod serves as a stable and adjustable platform to support the telescope. It allows users to adjust the height and position of the telescope to suit their viewing needs.

  3. Astronomical and Terrestrial Use: Refractor telescopes are versatile and can be used for both astronomical and terrestrial observation. They are suitable for viewing celestial objects such as the Moon, planets, stars, and deep-sky objects like galaxies and nebulae. They can also be used for birdwatching, nature observation, and other terrestrial subjects.

  4. Portability: Refractor telescopes are known for their portability and ease of setup. The tripod provides a stable base for the telescope while remaining relatively lightweight and easy to transport.

  5. Aperture and Magnification: The performance of a refractor telescope is often determined by the size of its objective lens (aperture) and the eyepiece used. A larger aperture gathers more light and provides higher resolution images.Magnification is determined by the focal length of the telescope and the eyepiece used.

  6. Refractive Chromatic Aberration: Refractor telescopes can suffer from chromatic aberration, a distortion of colors in the image due to the bending of light by the lens. To combat this, many refractor telescopes use special lens coatings or multiple lenses to minimize chromatic aberration.

  7. Mount Types: Tripods for refractor telescopes can come in various types, including alt-azimuth and equatorial mounts. Equatorial mounts are often preferred for astronomical observations because they can be aligned with the celestial pole for tracking celestial objects as they move across the sky.

  8. Accessories: Refractor telescopes may come with various accessories, including different eyepieces for varying magnifications, finderscopes for locating objects, and star diagonals for more comfortable viewing angles.

  9. Maintenance: Proper care and maintenance of the lens elements are essential to keep the telescope performing optimally. Regular cleaning and protection from dust and moisture are important.

Refractor telescopes with tripods are excellent choices for beginners and experienced observers alike due to their ease of use, portability, and versatility. They provide opportunities for exploring the wonders of the night sky and capturing breathtaking views of celestial objects and terrestrial scenes.

User questions & answers

Question: can this scope be used as a spotting scope for bird watching
Answer: Excellent for bird-watching. At 20x, it's fine. At 40x (long distance) you may want a strudier tripod, and because it's daylight, you can look through the smaller 42mm hole (take off the little cap) in the dust cap and that will improve the sharpness at high power. If you want a better spotting scope, simply buy a fancy wide-angle/high-performance 1.25 eyepiece (super-plossl, etc), around 15 mm focal length.
Question: You say that any tripod that I use for photography should work. Does that mean that I can screw my tripod head into the telescope
Answer: Yes. As others have said, the tripod that comes with the telescope is reallllly flimsy. There are a couple of screw holes on the bottom of the telescope. I was able to attache the telescope to my other tripod using the detachable head on the tripod.
Question: I'm a real beginner/plan to purchase this for my son so we can both explore the night sky, etc. Is it really easy to setup?/How long will it take
Answer: The scope is really good for beginners and it is easy to set up. As others have said the the included tripod is small for portability and not very stable. If used fully "retracted" on the hood of a car for example, it's OK. I've used it with a Celestron 7.5MM eyepiece and a 2x barlow lens and it can still resolve the rings of Saturn on a clear night. It's not designed for that kind of magnification but for an inexpensive scope with simple lenses I was impressed. I wouldn't recommend trying that though until you have some practice on focus, finding objects in the sky, and purchasing a heavy duty camera tripod. You must remember even with the highest power eyepieces, which you only want to consider using for viewing planets, objects are really small which is due to it's 400mm focal length. Overall it's WAY better than spending 40-50 dollars on a cheap toy at the local discount store. Another good option comparable to this is the Orion 76mm Fun Scope. It's really only for table top use but it's easy to swivel up/down left/right. It is a reflector though and images don't appear as crisp in my opinion. You'll find out that half the quality of a telescope is how good the tripod or mounting set up is. For the price you can't go wrong with this scope. I own several telescopes from computer driven to large reflectors and still grab this for quick views of Orions belt, Jupiter, Saturn, the Moon, and star clusters like the double cluster and the Pleiades. Just to add to an already long answer, I added an inexpensive laser object finder (similar to the Celestron Star Finder) instead of the mostly useless viewfinder. It makes it ten times easier to point the scope at objects you're trying to look at and it doesn't take much modifications to get it screwed to the scope tube or stuck on with foam tape. Your son will thank you!
Question: can i see with my left eye
Answer: Only if you look at objects on the left....use right eye for objects on the right side....if its straight above you , you can use both eyes.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the actual size of the mirror
Answer: 4.5"
Question: Can this be left undercover outside
Answer: No. The tripod collapses pretty easily, though, and the scope comes off without any issues.
Question: is this sturdy enough for a canon rebel xs to sit on or any dslr for that matter
Answer: Hi Steven, I don't own that telescope anymore. I am now using Nexstar 5SE. However what I have discovered is if your camera is decently heavy then your telescope will start tilting down. To stabilize it I had to use additional weights. I have never tried mounting a camera on Astromaster.
Question: Its view will be upside down
Answer: With the 20mm eyepiece the view is upright, but with its 10mm eyepiece the view is upside down.

Refractors are known for their crisp, high contrast views of the Moon and planets and the AstroView 90 delivers sharp views right out of the box. The low power 25mm Sirius Plossl eyepiece (36X magnification) nicely frames the moon, while the high power 10mm eyepiece (91X magnification) delivers a crisp close up image full of detail. The sharp Achromatic optics of the AstroView 90 EQ also give me delightful views of deep space objects. On a moonless night I like the way the 25mm eyepiece frames the ghostly glow of the Orion Nebula. Zooming in with the 10mm Sirius Plossl eyepiece, I can easily pick out all four stars of the Orion Nebula’s embedded quadruple star the Trapezium. Another night I used an Ultima 2X Barlow with the 10mm plossl eyepiece for a total magnification of 182X while viewing the planet Jupiter. I was rewarded with a clear view of Jupiter’s famous Great Red Spot.

The Equatorial mount included with the AstroView 90 EQ is designed to help track stars and planets at high power. When I set up the telescope, I simply point the polar axis at Polaris, the North Star. This makes it easy to keep celestial objects in the field of view by turning one slow motion knob. Orion also offers the EQ-2M Electronic Telescope Drive which features a battery powered motor for automatic tracking. The EQ-2 equatorial mount is a little wobbly when the legs are fully extended, but that’s normal for any large telescope in this price range.

With excellent optics, classic design, and a very good accessory package, Orion‘s AstroView 90 Equatorial Refractor is an excellent introduction to the world of Astronomy. --Jeff Phillips

User questions & answers

Question: How tall is the unit when the tripod is raised to full height? Thanks
Answer: Yeah I believe so
Question: can you attach any digital camera to the telescope to take pictures with it
Answer: It always has to be plugged in. My charger plug actually broke and the seller was really nice to send me a new one no charge
Question: How well can you see planets? Are their additional lens to purchase that would enhance viewing
Answer: It is most effective on light to medium skin tones with hair ranging from natural blonde to dark brown / black. The device is not effective on very blonde, red, grey or white hair where the smaller amount of melanin would not absorb the light energy. It is suitable for people with Fitzpatrick skin tone I-V.
Question: Can you see Saturn rings? Is the tripod table or floor mount? Thanks
Answer: I’m not sure but I thought is was USA made, nice boxing with good quality.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the book come with it
Answer: The MoonMap is included with this package, yes.
Question: Would a solar filter be avaialbe to use with this scope, and does one come for ths specific scope
Answer: Our 4.30" ID Orion Deluxe Safety Film or Glass Full Aperture Solar Filter is compatible with this telescope.
Question: Would I need to get an erecting eyepiece for daytime use, to make the image right-side-up? Or is one included
Answer: The included diagonal allows for correct-image viewing, so no further purchase is needed.
Question: Would this be good for Space & Deep Space as well as Wildlife? That's what I need
Answer: You'll be able to see globular star clusters, such as The Pleiades and The Hercules Cluster. Under really dark skies, you'll be able to see some of the brighter deep space objects (DSO), such as the Orion Nebula, and the Andromeda Galaxy. However, you will not see much in the way of details, as 70mm is a bit too small to resolve them. While star clusters will be fairly easy to see, the brighter nebulae will basically look like barely visible grey smudges, as will Andromeda. Here is a link to a discussion thread on Cloudy Nights that discusses what you can see through a small telescope:http://tinyurl.com/llw4jb8
