User questions & answers

Question: My grandson was so disappointed to discover that his kit had no tools included for digging the fossils. How do I get those tools
Answer: We are sorry to hear your kit was missing some of its contents. Please contact us directly at [email protected] where we can further assist you
Question: does this product contain harmful substances? What is it made out of
Answer: Hello. This kit is recommended for ages 8 and up. The only warning on the package is that it there are small parts, so it is a choking hazard for children under 3. It comes in an easy open tab/slot box, so I opened it up to check the contents and paperwork. The paperwork doesn't have anything stating what the dig brick is made of. The specimens included in the brick are a mososaur tooth, a dinosaur bone and fossilized dinosaur poop, also called a coprolite. Depending on your child, the "ick factor" of this specimen may increase their interest. However, you may want to do some internet research on coprolites to determine your own comfort level with this type of specimen. The kit also includes a plastic magnifying glass, a hard plastic digging tool and a small brush. Thank you for your interest. I hope this was helpful. Nancy OnTrend Treasures
Question: Whats the age for this
Answer: Hello Janice, This product is great for ANY child interested in fossils! We recommend no children under 3 as there are smaller parts. Thank you for your inquiry, National Geographic Toys Customer Support
Question: Would this be appropriate for an almost 4 year old's homeschool lesson on dinos and fossils? He's slightly advanced (we go by a kinder curriculumn
Answer: Actually my grandson is 4 and was pretty disappointed. Supposed to have 3 bones only had 2. He dug them out in 10 minutes and went on to something else

User questions & answers

Question: can this scope be used as a spotting scope for bird watching
Answer: Excellent for bird-watching. At 20x, it's fine. At 40x (long distance) you may want a strudier tripod, and because it's daylight, you can look through the smaller 42mm hole (take off the little cap) in the dust cap and that will improve the sharpness at high power. If you want a better spotting scope, simply buy a fancy wide-angle/high-performance 1.25 eyepiece (super-plossl, etc), around 15 mm focal length.
Question: You say that any tripod that I use for photography should work. Does that mean that I can screw my tripod head into the telescope
Answer: Yes. As others have said, the tripod that comes with the telescope is reallllly flimsy. There are a couple of screw holes on the bottom of the telescope. I was able to attache the telescope to my other tripod using the detachable head on the tripod.
Question: I'm a real beginner/plan to purchase this for my son so we can both explore the night sky, etc. Is it really easy to setup?/How long will it take
Answer: The scope is really good for beginners and it is easy to set up. As others have said the the included tripod is small for portability and not very stable. If used fully "retracted" on the hood of a car for example, it's OK. I've used it with a Celestron 7.5MM eyepiece and a 2x barlow lens and it can still resolve the rings of Saturn on a clear night. It's not designed for that kind of magnification but for an inexpensive scope with simple lenses I was impressed. I wouldn't recommend trying that though until you have some practice on focus, finding objects in the sky, and purchasing a heavy duty camera tripod. You must remember even with the highest power eyepieces, which you only want to consider using for viewing planets, objects are really small which is due to it's 400mm focal length. Overall it's WAY better than spending 40-50 dollars on a cheap toy at the local discount store. Another good option comparable to this is the Orion 76mm Fun Scope. It's really only for table top use but it's easy to swivel up/down left/right. It is a reflector though and images don't appear as crisp in my opinion. You'll find out that half the quality of a telescope is how good the tripod or mounting set up is. For the price you can't go wrong with this scope. I own several telescopes from computer driven to large reflectors and still grab this for quick views of Orions belt, Jupiter, Saturn, the Moon, and star clusters like the double cluster and the Pleiades. Just to add to an already long answer, I added an inexpensive laser object finder (similar to the Celestron Star Finder) instead of the mostly useless viewfinder. It makes it ten times easier to point the scope at objects you're trying to look at and it doesn't take much modifications to get it screwed to the scope tube or stuck on with foam tape. Your son will thank you!
Question: can i see with my left eye
Answer: Only if you look at objects on the left....use right eye for objects on the right side....if its straight above you , you can use both eyes.

User questions & answers

Question: I cannot see thru the telescope even after taking all caps off it is stil blank image
Answer: We are having the same issue. It’s been properly set up but even after allowing it to come to temperatures outside, there is nothing we’re seeing. We’ve adjusted magnification, tried different lens, still blank. And yes, all the caps are off too. I have a curious, yet disappointment kiddo on my hands. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Question: I can’t get the the telescope to lock in place when we find something to look at, how is this done
Answer: You have to use the little knob that looks like a T and also the long handle bar (you turn the handle bar right to tighten and left to loosen. They are both apart of the stand.
Question: Is this user friendly as described ? Since im a beginner is this the right fit for me
Answer: I set it up in 5 minutes. I observed the Moon, Venus and Cassini twin stars (actually quad) with in 30 minutes on 25 mm. I have never owned a telescope in my life. The instructions are pictures describing what part goes where under them. How to set up your phone is a bit of a mess but I understood and decided to address that later. I was too excited to see Venus, and then sad when it looked like a big star, lol. There is another way to set it up to see even closer images, so I’ll be experimenting. I want a bigger one now... lol 😂. I’m managing my expectations on the 3X with 10mm parts. I just want to see it all!
Question: Is this good for photographing an eagle 100 yards away
Answer: As long as the Eagle is stationary, yes. This comes with a 10mm and 25mm eyepiece. I think the 10mm would work.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use another tripod I have a bigger sturdier and has wheels
Answer: Yes and you should! The tripod is the weakest link on this product. This isn't a mark against the company, as the tripod is often the weakest link in any optics set up. I am not sure why your tripod has wheels or how that would benefit, since orienting objects are easier to do using a stable base and the spotting scope attachment along an axis, but hey, follow your heart!
Question: How do you attach the cell phone holder? It is not even mentioned in the instructions
Answer: There is a part of the cell phone holder that twists. As you twist clockwise or counter clockwise the opening widens I order for the eyepiece to fit in it. Once you are able to fit the cellphone holder on the eye piece you tighten the twisting part to fasten the cellphone holder in place. I hope that helps.
Question: Does it can see the moon
Answer: Yes it can does see the moon.... Really it just magnifies the light that comes into your eyeball which your brain interprets as the moon.
Question: What all can you see with this telescope
Answer: The parking lot across the street was all ilI could ever see. It is absolutely trash. The company must be giving all these great reviews

User questions & answers

Question: Is this a good telescope for astrophotography (nebula, star clusters, galaxies?) Can I attach a Canon EOS 60D to this using a T mount
Answer: Not with a camera that heavy the mount and counter weight couldn't take the load. To do any good deep sky images you need to put the motor drive on it and its also would handle that heavy of a camera. This telescope can see many deep sky object I have seen M81 (Bode's Galaxy) in Ursa Major. You can put on a Celestron Motor Drive and a Orion 52175 Star Shoot Solar System Color Imaging Camera IV and take great pictures. Happy watching!
Question: I am planning to travel with this. What would be total weight and dimension of this in a packed box along with tripod and all accessories
Answer: This is not a scope I would think that would travel well. First off it is a Jones-Bird Reflector design which means it is difficult and somewhat time consuming to collimate. Travel would just complicate that more. The box is fairly large as well - As far as weight 30.9 x 16.9 x 8.5 inches ; 17 pounds assembled - 30 pounds packaged. You would be better off with a small refractor type scope for travel or a small maksutov-cassegrain around 90mm or so.
Question: What will i see with this
Answer: There are two types of telescopes and each has its own purpose. If you are just interested in viewing the moon and the other 5 inner planets, buy a good refractor telescope. This type magnifies an image thru lenses. Great for viewing planets (or other daytime scenic viewing/bird watching, etc), and are more forgiving in high light-pollution areas, such as cities. But they basically are useless for viewing other night sky objects. If you are interested in viewing star clusters, galaxies, nebulae, etc, buy a good reflector scope with as wide an aperture as you can afford. Be sure you have a very dark sky available. If you live in or near a mid to large city, you can forget about using it at home. The light pollution precludes any acceptable viewing. These types use mirrors to collect light from a distance object and then projects it into the eyepiece. The larger the mirror (and thus, more expensive), the farther and clearer you will gather light from and be able to view distant objects. These are not very good at viewing the closer planets in any detail and tend to wash them out from eye overexposure. (Which is why so many here say that you will not see the planets in color. They are using reflector scopes to view planets. But even a cheap refractor scope will show you the true colors of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn easily.) of course, they do make telescopes that incorporate the best of both types, but they are quite expensive.
Question: What will I be able to see through these
Answer: I am a novice user who started using this telescope Early Summer 2017. I was able to observe Jupiter and Saturn with some practice and patience. Luckily they were easy to find in the night sky and followed behind the path of the moon. I could make out the colored bands if Jupiter and could see the rings of Saturn with this telescope. It was blurry but still exhilarating!! I can’t wait until next Summer when I can view Mars!

User questions & answers

Question: Would my 8yo son be able to see the stars and planets? Or is it only the moon
Answer: This telescope is amongst the best in the market. It is made from the best quality aluminium and has excellent image optics. The telescope gives clear images and has a strong magnification lens.
Question: Where can I get a taller tripod
Answer: Sure!
Question: Does it come with a 10 and 25 mm lens
Answer: They won’t be as clear as the moon, to view the stars, the smaller magnification lens is better to use. The maximum magnification should be used only for incredibly transparent objects such as the moon, which is relatively close to the Earth and very bright, permitting fair resolution of details at high magnification.
Question: Can you see any of the planets? If so, which ones
Answer: There are no chemicals in this kit, just plastic tubes etc., that may or may not break during your trip. If you are worried about airport security check with your local TSA.

SPECIFICATION

  • Aperture: 40mm / Focal length: 400mm
  • Finder Scope: 5X18 / Eyepiece: H6mm, H12.5mm, H20mm
  • Accessories: Moon mirror / Table-top Aluminum Tripod
  • Finder Scope Adjustment

As the telescope only offers a limited field of view, it may be fairly hard to locate the object for observation. This is why the telescope is fitted with a cross-hair finder scope for orientation purposes. We recommend performing the following adjustments in daylight.

  1. Insert the eyepiece with the lower magnification into the diagonal mirror. Observe an easily recognizable fixed object that is no more than 300 meters away. Adjust and focusing the telescope until the object is located right in the center of your field of view.
  2. Now look through the finder scope, If you can not see the fixed object, slacken the adjusting nut and move the finder scope until you can see the object. Then tighten down the adjusting nut making sure that the object remains visible in the center of the finder scope.

About Magnification

  • The magnification power of a telescope indicates how much an image is enlarged or how big and close it appears to the viewer. The focal length of the eyepiece, combined with the focal length of the telescope, determine the magnification power.
  • To calculate the power of your telescope with any particular eyepiece, simply divide the focal length of the telescope (400mm) by the focal length of the eyepiece (indicated in “mm” on the eyepiece collar). When you use the eyepiece H6mm with this telescope, the magnification will be 66X.

Moon mirror

Because there is great deal of reflected glare when the full moon is observed, the addition of the moon mirror will remove this glare and make it possible to sharpen surface details. The moon mirror is screwed into the eyepiece when you view the moon.

HOW TO USE

  • Open the tripod.
  • Place the telescope tube onto the tripod mount.
  • Insert the diagonal mirror into the focus tube.
  • Insert the eyepiece into the diagonal mirror.
  • Adjust the focus knob to view the clear image.
  • WARNING: NEVER aim your telescope at the sun or close to the sun!
  • CAUTION: Do not let children use any telescope without supervision!

User questions & answers

Question: My viewfinder is upside down. Is this standard
Answer: Hi Frances, Thanks for your interest in a Qurious Telescope Kit! We pack all of our kits with maximum fun in mind. This 1650 starter kit is actually a perfect kit for that age. The instructions and activity guide, pictures etc. may need some help from an adult depending on reading/comprehension level, but learning how to use a telescope is a great bonding activity! Everything in the kit was designed to be fun, and educational for elementary aged kids while encouraging safe play. This kit has an added hand-held compass, monthly lunar phase guide, year long star chart, reusable, glow in the dark solar system stickers, and an activity guide with lots of different challenges for Space fun at home, even on stormy nights when a telescope can't be used. However, all telescopes do require patience (and adherence to safety warnings!) to learn how to focus and use properly. Keep the need for patience and perserverance in mind when you order and receive your kit and you should be good to go.
Question: Does this telescope have coated lenses
Answer: Thanks for your interest in a Qurious Telescope kit. Our current telescope models have a maximum magnification of x66. Planets close enough to see will be visible as small halos. To see planets clearly, you'll need a telescope with about x200 magnification and illumination. Our telescope kits are intended to help kids learn how to use and get comfortable with scientific tools, develop patience and scientific testing methods, focusing skills and moon tracking/observation. Hope that answers your question and thanks again for your interest in Qurious!
Question: Why can i not see anythinga through the main lense
Answer: I’m still trying to figure out myself how to see out of this telescope!! It’s very nice well made but I think I need to work on it more!! The stars most definitely
Question: Which eyepiece to phone adapter do you recommend? i'd like to take pictures with my iphone 7 plus. thanks in advance for your time
Answer: I would NOT waste my money on a different tripod for this telescope. It is more of a pirate monocular than a telescope. NOTHING LIKE THE PICTURE OR DESCRIPTION!!!
