It's elevated in the stand, so the surface it's on only gets warm. I placed a pan of water on it and it continued to burn steady and would easily boil a cup of water in only a few minutes.

Answer:	The stainless steel screw is rust-preventing, but i think that rinse and dry with fresh water after use in salt water as advertised, this may be better for extending the life of the screw.
