11 best home surge protectors
Home surge protectors are devices designed to protect electronic devices and appliances from voltage spikes, surges, and transient overvoltages. These events can occur due to lightning, power outages, or fluctuations in the power grid. Surge protectors work by diverting excess voltage away from connected devices and preventing potential damage.
Here are some key points about home surge protectors:
Functionality: Surge protectors are equipped with metal oxide varistors (MOVs) or other similar components that can absorb excess voltage. When the voltage exceeds a certain threshold, these components redirect the excess energy to the ground, protecting the connected devices.
Types: There are various types of surge protectors available, including power strips with surge protection, dedicated surge protector units, and whole-house surge protectors. Power strips with surge protection are common and provide multiple outlets for various devices.
Joule Rating: The joule rating of a surge protector indicates how much energy it can absorb before it fails. Higher joule ratings generally mean better protection. It's important to choose a surge protector with a joule rating that meets the needs of your electronics.
Clamping Voltage: This refers to the voltage at which the surge protector activates and starts to redirect excess energy. Lower clamping voltages provide better protection, as they respond more quickly to voltage spikes.
Indicator Lights: Many surge protectors have indicator lights to show if they are functioning properly. Some also include features like a reset button to restore protection after a power surge.
Number of Outlets: Consider the number of outlets the surge protector offers to ensure it can accommodate all your devices. Some surge protectors also include USB ports for charging electronic devices.
Installation: Proper installation is crucial for effective protection. Surge protectors should be plugged directly into a grounded outlet, and they should not be daisy-chained (plugged into each other).
Replaceable: Surge protectors can wear out over time, especially if they have absorbed a significant amount of energy. It's advisable to replace surge protectors periodically, especially if they have indicator lights showing potential issues.
Application: Surge protectors are essential for safeguarding sensitive electronics such as computers, TVs, audio equipment, and other devices with microprocessors.
It's important to note that while surge protectors provide valuable protection, they cannot guarantee absolute immunity from all electrical issues. They are, however, an essential component of a comprehensive strategy to protect electronic devices and appliances from power-related damage.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is installation in a main panel where ground and neutral bus are bonded possible? Do the ground and neutral bus need to be isolated |
Answer: | Yes, installation in the service entrance panel with bonded neutral is the typical installation. In most cases will provide sufficient protection for all loads in the home. There are some instances where it is good practice to install additional surge protection in a subpanel (ground and neutral isolated). If circuits powered from the subpanel extend outside the home, they are susceptible to surges originating from nearby lightning strikes that will back feed into the subpanel possibly damaging equipment. Also, if the subpanel supplies motor driven equipment there are additional considerations. When motors turn off on and on, they create lower energy spikes that could travel and impact other equipment served by the sub panel or back upstream to equipment powered by the main panel. A percentage of subpanel surges will not travel all the way back to the main panel, but will seek earth via equipment powered by the sub-panel. A lower surge capacity device like FS60 would probably be sufficient for the subpanel. |
Question: | Will unit work with square D electrical panel |
Answer: | It wires directly to a circuit breaker of any make in any brand panel |
Question: | Can this be used with the siemens tps3a03050 120/240 type 1 split phase surge protective device lightning arrester |
Answer: | Yes. As a part of a complete surge protection system it is advised to use the TPS3A03050 on outside loads (HVAC, generator ATS, pumps). It can also be used on panel/breaker boxes with no available breaker for connection. |
Question: | It states there is an audible alarm. Can this be silenced afterwards |
Answer: | The two-pole breaker this device wires into is technically the audible alarm shutoff. The FirstSurge device is typically wired into a dedicated 2 pole breaker. So when you hear the alarm, turn off the breaker and order a replacement first surge device. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone installed this into an RV |
Answer: | I have put 3 of these in RV's, including my own. There is absolutely no difference between an RV electrical system and a house electrical system. For 30A, you only hook up one side. You have the other as a spare then. One install was in a park with known electrical surges. One day a few RV's got hit hard and lost some equipment. The install I did with this blew one side of the surge suppressor and lost only the fan on a very old portable electric heater. A couple months prior to the install, they had a surge and fried the computer that controlled the whole RV. It was one of those touch screen RV's that controlls slides, lighting, etc. The whole part costs $1600 and is not available to purchase since it is "OEM". I am not joking, if it breaks, you either have to buy a new RV or rewire your RV to toggle switches yourself. Sorry, a bit of a sore subject. |
Question: | What is the length of the wires that come with the unit |
Answer: | In the interest of giving you a reliable answer, I just popped the cover off my breaker panel to measure the length of the wires that are permanently attached to the Ultra Surge, coming out of the conduit nipple molded into its housing. I didn't shorten any of the four conductors when I installed it on the side of my panel, and they are 15-1/4" long... a neutral, ground, and two line wires. Incidentally, I'm impressed with the quality of this unit, and glad I chose it. |
Question: | Can this be located on the inside of the breaker panel, provided there is enough space for it |
Answer: | I think it depends on your specific AHJ. Installing this SPD inside the loadcenter is not a code violation per se but installing into a loadcenter not designed for integral installation may be seen as voiding the UL listing of the loadcenter since it was not designed specifically for an integral SPD mount (which in effect might be a NFPA 70 violation). I’d error on the side of caution and mount external. Try to get the SPD as close to its OCPD as possible. SPD leads over 12-14” in length drastically effect SPD performance. The difference in resistance between the busbars and those small gauge leads is drastic. I prefer to get the SPD as close to the load side of the loadcenters main breaker I can. |
Question: | Why only one view of the product? I dont see the pigtail wires. Does it have wires or does it snap into place like a breaker |
Answer: | I does have 4 pigtail wires. It does not snap in. 2 pigtails tie to the breaker you choose, one wire to the neutral and one to the ground bar. It is mounted in one of the knockouts on the main breaker panel. If this is installed on an existing breaker panel, you might have to cut an opening in the wall. I recommend paying the few extra bucks for the cover plate. It is a really good looking install. I mounted mine on one of the bottom left side knockouts. Just Google Eaton surge protector installed to see some pics. |

User questions & answers
Question: | would it protect air conditioning , central& mini split units |
Answer: | Yes, This surge protector protects all circuits of the panel it is wired into. |
Question: | does it indicate when ite beebbowln |
Answer: | If you are asking, "..does the unit indicate when it is blown?", yes it does. The unit has 2 LEDs which glow green when it is operating normally. The lights will go out (one or both of them) when the unit has been activated by an unexpected surge in your household electrical supply. At this point, the unit has done it's job by protecting your downstream electrical appliances and it must be replaced. You can read more about the function and installation of this unit directly from Eaton at: http://www.eaton.com/ecm/groups/public/@pub/@electrical/documents/content/ib00414001y.pdf |
Question: | does it replace a GFI breaker, so if I have 30 breakers in my panel that cover the house, do I buy 1 or 30 units |
Answer: | You install it into your panel on its own two gang breaker slot. Depending on the model you get, you install a new 20,30 or 50 amp 220v breaker and wire it up with nothing else wired to the breaker it gives you surge protection on both phases in your panel that way . If you do not have open breaker slots, by code you should replace the panel. I am not a licensed electrician but the normal DIYer can do it pretty easily. |
Question: | What are the dimensions of this item |
Answer: | Its about 3 3/4" long x 2 1/4" wide x 2 1/4" deep. The exact dimentions are not listed on the box or the website. But you could try calling 877-ETN-CARE, maybe they can help. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do I determine how many of these I need for my house? I have a main panel outside and 4 panels in the garage |
Answer: | What size is your main service entrance panel? One of these units usually covers a 200 amp residential service.Interesting (and a bit strange) that you have so many subpanels in your garage. What kind of equipment are you running in your garage that require 4 subpanels? |
Question: | will this protect all the breakers in the panel or is it just for one breaker |
Answer: | It must be connected to it's own breaker in the panel. By doing that it protects the entire panel. |
Question: | where do you install this? from the power meter to the main circuit breaker then to Square D then to the rest of the breaker tree |
Answer: | oh No No and NO! You do NOT install the supressor to a single 20 amp double pole 240v breaker. that doesn't do jack!!! The PROPER installation would be to take the top two single pole 20 amp breakers and attach it there. You have three wires coming in from the pole(meter) they each carry 120volts EACH. you must protect BOTH SIDES. it's self explanatory once you have the box open 2 big black mains to main breaker and two rows of breakers just attach the supressor to the topmost 20a on the left and the other wire to the right topmost 20a but they must be single leg. The ground goes to your ground bus(with all the bare copper wires) you may have to move some breakers around but that's how it's done. |
Question: | Will this protect from solar flares |
Answer: | Solar flares induce DC currents on long transmission lines. These DC currents won’t be transferred to the distribution system. Zero cause for concern at the customer level. |

What does a Surge Protector do?
A Surge Protector is a device designed to control very fast high voltage transients or surges that are common in our electrical systems. Voltage transients, large and small, can damage electrical equipment instantly or will degrade the components on the circuit boards over time, resulting in shorter life expectancies of electrical equipment. Surge Protectors are basically an insurance policy against electrical transients caused by voltage surges generated within the home, lightning surges, and utility-related surge events.
Square D Home Electronics Protective Device, HEPD80
The Home Electronics Protective Device (HEPD) is designed to provide surge suppression at residential load centers. Square D brand Home Electronics Protective Devices (HEPDs) are compact and affordable surge suppressors designed to be installed next to residential load centers. HEPDs work together with surge protection plug strips to provide surge suppression for sensitive electronics. HEPDs reduce surges that might otherwise overwhelm plug strips and damage connected household equipment. HEPDs also provide surge suppression for important items such as washers, dryers, refrigerators, stoves, and lighting that plug strips don’t protect.
Superior Performance
With an 80 kA Surge Current Rating, Square D brand HEPDs utilize high-energy suppression circuitry to protect household equipment from internally and externally generated surges. Each metal-oxide varistor (MOV) is individually fused with both thermal and overcurrent fusing.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be installed in an outdoor panel |
Answer: | Yes. It should be installed in your panel box. It takes two breaker spaces. |
Question: | How long is the pigtail |
Answer: | I think it was 7-9 inches. Plenty long to connect to the main buss bar. |
Question: | The square d breakers in my panel box are labeled, "type hom", is that what indicates that this is compatible |
Answer: | Square D Homeline comes in two flavors: plug-on-neutral and non-plug-on-neutral. This item is for the non-plug-on-neutral type. You can tell because it has a wire sticking out of it that you must route to the ground/neutral bar. The plug-on-neutral version has no wire. Instead, it has a clip that plugs directly to that bar when you install. You cannot plug one of these into the other type. You can tell if you have a plug-on-neutral load center because the ground/neutral bars run the full height of the breaker section of the panel, where the non-plug-on-neutral panels have ground/neutral bars that only go about halfway down the breaker section of the panel. |
Question: | How hard is it to install? Can This be reset or is it a one shot protector |
Answer: | GC here. Easy to install. Most difficult portion is minimizing the length of the wire to the neutral bus. Or relocating breakers if wire lengths are too short. Cannot be reset. One shot or multiple shots depending on the power of the surge(s). |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the clamping voltage of BE112234-08? Official Belkins website says 330V but amazon's description says 500V |
Answer: | Reading off of the item in my hand its Stamped "Voltage Protection rating L-N 400V, L-G 500V, N-G 500V Type 3 SPDMy model number on mine says BE11230-08 so there may have been a change. |
Question: | What is the amp rating on the USB plugs |
Answer: | 2 amps. But if you plug in two devices it will divide to 1 amp each. |
Question: | Does it have an on-off switch |
Answer: | Yes! Near the power cord, there is an on off switch. |
Question: | I had a lightning strike last night and this popped and made a loud noise and then burning wire smell. Is this normal (how they die)? Fire hazard |
Answer: | If you have experienced a lighting strike, the MOVs (metal oxide varistors) that dissipate the energy have been stressed. They may not handle the next strike very well and damage the important equipment you plug into this. It is best to purchase a new one so that it will work properly for the next lighting strike. If this is a common occurrence at your home, you should look into lighting arrestors and better ground for your electrical connection to the power grid. I would not trust the protection light (Green) if you are smelling any sort of burnt wire smell. The likelihood of a fire hazard is increased - if wire insulation has melted due to heat from the lighting strike. If I remember correctly, MOVs usually fail to an open state but I would not bet on it without testing. It is cheap insurance to throw this out and replace it with new. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will it be safe to use as daisy chain |
Answer: | Surge suppressors aren't good to daisy chain but if the extensions are just simple power strips with no interrupting suppressor, and you know the current load will be lower than 15A (even under heaviest load), then it's safe. |
Question: | Are all 12 outlets surge protected? Trying to figure out if the 4 green ones are different, or just a design choice |
Answer: | The only difference is that the green ones offer wider spacing. For my money these are fine surge protectors, I have one at each of the computer workplaces in my home and one in my guestroom. The one in my office is protecting a dell workstation that would cost about $3000 to replace, plus two monitors, my high res printer, etc etc. I think you can gather my opinion as to the quality of this unit. |
Question: | Is the power strip plastic casing or metal casing? i have one of axtra 12 outlet metal casing power strip. i want to get this one for my kitchen |
Answer: | This power strip is plastic casing. I prefer AXTRA 12 outlet metal housing power strip surge protector for your kitchenware. |
Question: | What is the difference between this power strip compares to axtra 12 outlet metal power strip |
Answer: | Axtra is a 450 joule surge protector, which I would not use ever to protect anything. So one of them is a surge protector, the other is a joke. At 4320 joules the amazon basics offers some real protection and longevity. Also the amount of joules of energy protection is directly correlated to longevity (surge protectors do not last forever. Astra is spamming with this question, and If I cared enough, I would look into the bona-fides of those who are recommending it here. at 50% higher price with about 10% of the energy protection the Axtra is not in the same league and I would never have it in my home. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this Surge Protector have a Built in Circuit Breaker |
Answer: | Ours is a regular 120v. outlet plug. Surge protector with heavy duty cord for use with various small appliance including electronic ones, computers, printers, etc. with a telephone outlet. |
Question: | Does this wall mount unit have a screw to keep it securely plugged in |
Answer: | I just received this product, and the plug is a flat, slightly angled to the right, but not rotating. Disappointing as I had come to really enjoy the rotating plug heads, but at least the slightly askew plug doesn't interfere with others. I have enough rotating head plugs, that if I do have a space problem I can swap them out. Even though this is apparently a variation, the design is exactly what you're seeing here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002QPW9J2 |
Question: | What is the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) rating of this product? Is it listed as a transient voltage surge suppressor |
Answer: | Hi. This unit has 330V clamping voltage. |
Question: | How does the $300,000 dollar warranty work |
Answer: | It plugs in flush to the outlet, rather than sticking out like most plugs. With the ground prong on the bottom, the cord drops down at about a 45 degree angle. The plug is a circle w/a diameter of about 1 3/8". It's about 3/4" thick. |
