10 best electric wire for outlet

Electric wires for outlets, often referred to as electrical cords or power cords, are essential components used to connect various electronic devices and appliances to power sources such as wall outlets or power strips. These cords are designed to transmit electrical current safely and efficiently. Here's what you should know about them:

  1. Types of Electric Wires for Outlets:

    • Standard Power Cords: These are the most common types of cords used for everyday appliances like lamps, TVs, and computer monitors. They typically have a two- or three-prong plug on one end and a standard power connector (such as IEC C13) on the other.

    • Extension Cords: Extension cords are longer power cords that allow you to extend the reach of an electrical device. They come in various lengths and are useful for powering devices that are not located near an outlet.

    • Heavy-Duty Cords: These cords are designed for high-power appliances like air conditioners, refrigerators, or power tools. They have thicker wires and are capable of handling greater electrical loads.

  2. Wire Gauge (AWG): Electric wires come in different wire gauges, commonly referred to as American Wire Gauge (AWG). The lower the AWG number, the thicker and more robust the wire. Thicker wires can carry more current and are suitable for higher-powered devices.

  3. Polarization: Some power cords have polarized plugs, meaning one prong is wider than the other. This ensures that the device is connected to the outlet in the correct orientation for safety reasons.

  4. Grounding: Many power cords have a third prong, which is the grounding prong. It's an important safety feature that helps protect against electrical shocks by providing a path for excess electrical current to safely dissipate into the ground.

  5. Length: The length of the power cord is an important consideration, especially when using power strips or extension cords.Make sure the cord is long enough to reach the desired outlet without excessive tension or strain.

  6. Safety and Compliance: Look for power cords that meet safety and regulatory standards, such as UL (Underwriters Laboratories) certification in the United States. This ensures that the cord has been tested for safety and reliability.

  7. Compatibility: Ensure that the power cord you choose is compatible with your specific electronic device or appliance. Check the plug type and connector on both ends to ensure a proper fit.

  8. Power Strip Compatibility: When using power strips or surge protectors, make sure the power cord can handle the total load of all devices connected to the strip. Overloading a power cord or strip can lead to overheating and electrical hazards.

  9. Surge Protection: While power cords themselves do not provide surge protection, they are often used in conjunction with surge protector power strips. Surge protectors help safeguard your devices from voltage spikes and electrical surges.

  10. Maintenance: Regularly inspect power cords for signs of wear and tear, such as fraying or exposed wires. Damaged cords should be replaced promptly to avoid electrical hazards.

In summary, electric wires for outlets are critical components for connecting your electronic devices and appliances to power sources safely. Choosing the right type, length, and gauge of cord, while ensuring proper safety features and compliance, is essential for maintaining a safe and functional electrical setup in your home or workspace.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I replace a two prong outlet with this one
Answer: Yes. I replaced three two pronged outlets with three of these in my home and they work perfectly.
Question: Should these be used with outlet covers or without? We have a home with standard receptacles and plastic covers that go into the slots now
Answer: Covers are not needed with this outlet. As stated in the product description:Shutter mechanism inside the receptacle blocks access to the contacts unless a two-prong plug is inserted, helping ensure hairpins, keys, etc., will be locked out
Question: Are these for copper wire only? Or both copper and aluminium
Answer: 14 AWG solid copper, 12 AWG solid copper or copper clad
Question: My first time buying outlets, if I get these will I need to know anything about the ones I'm replacing or are these sort-of universal
Answer: Standard home outlets are 15AMP, the only time you’d really need a 20AMP outlet is if your home is equipped to handle heavy duty construction equipment. Best way to confirm if your home can handle a 20 AMP fuse is to check your circuit breaker and it should say it on there.

User questions & answers

Question: would this work to run a plug for a 8ooo btu air cond
Answer: wire gauge size
Question: Will this wire pull through a 1/2 inch PVC conduit
Answer: I'm not an electrician nor do I know code in your area so my opinion has little value. In general, you can pull this to an outside wall and use an outdoor covered gfci outlet on 15 amp circuit or covered gfci sockets (hinge covers). If it is covered patio and you are asking about running this wire exposed to the elements, the wire would be fine BUT, technically you cannot according to code because the ground wire inside the jacket is not coated like the hot and neutral are. If it were exposed to some sort of liquid spill, splash or otherwise it could harm the connection. The other reason is that since it is not protected in a wall, it is exposed to things hitting it, scuffing it, possibly nicking the jacket and into the wire. I suppose you could run you wire out of harms way and mount your gfci outlets higher for less chances of harm to them. Bottom line in a covered situation that does not get wet, the main threat is accidental human damage.
Question: Im running a 30a hook up for my camper this will work right
Answer: How much current will you be drawing on the circuit? 14 gauge wire carries 5 amps less than 12 gauge wire. Ampacity is the maximum current that a conductor can carry continuously under the conditions of use without exceeding its temperature rating. Current is measured in amperes or “amps”. You must use the correct size wire for the current (load) requirement of the circuit to prevent the wire from overheating.
Question: Can I use this wire with a 40amp 240v breaker for a 240v 2000w wallheater
Answer: No

User questions & answers

Question: The volt sensor is so sensitive it goes off near an outlet. Is that normal? I thought I could stick it in the slots to find out which side was hot
Answer: Yes, you can insert the tip of this tool into the slots of an outlet then press the button and it will tell you which side is hot. You can also use it to test the wires in a circuit if you are unsure which is the hot lead. If the wires are connected to the switch, outlet etc touch the tip to the bared wire at the contact point and it will tell you if it is hot. You can also just touch the insulation covering the wires to get a reading too. Try to keep the wires you are testing separted by a few inches if possible, this will help prevent any false reading you might get by voltage seepage from the insulated hot lead. If you didn't know - the hot wire in a circuit is usually black, red or maybe some other dark color, the white is the neutral or return and the green is the ground. Start by testing the dark wire first but as a precaution be sure the check the white also - someone may have wired in incorrectly and that could be a hot lead. I've had - well had, until I left it someplace - one of these for years and it's a good useful tool. So I gotta get another one now, and I'm getting one of these.
Question: Can this be used as a circuit breaker finder
Answer: You could use them to find a circuit breaker, if you had someone to watch the tester, while you went through your panel turning off and on your breakers untill you found the one that controlled that circuit. If you didn't want to do that then you will need to buy an circuit breaker finder kit.
Question: does this tester work on low-voltage landscape lighting wires
Answer: The non contact voltage tester will.
Question: can it tell the diffrence between 220v and 110v
Answer: If you can’t tell the difference 110v and 220v .You Dont Need A Meter.

User questions & answers

Question: Why does this product title include "Not Available" in its title when it shows as fully available below? Please do not post titles such as this
Answer: The actual cord is exactly 34”, then when you add the length of the elongated plug, it just over 3ft. Looks neat and clean. I love it.
Question: Can this be used outdoors
Answer: yes
Question: Where do you route the green wire? Does it run right up along the outside of the white piece? Looks like a tight fit between the case screw and wht pc
Answer: Not yet. Just White.
Question: need 1 for a 10/3 gauge wire
Answer: Not sure why they sat and his. I am using mine on a horizontal. M aybe because they are worried about tg wire being bent...not sure but it's working fine
Question: Is the 3' really 3 feet long, meaning 36", or is it actually less? i've found this is the case with some extension cords
Answer: If its 110 volt yes, if it is 220 volt you will need 12/3. As long as it doesn't draw more than 20 amps, I would think an 8000 but air conditioner word be 110 volt and draw less than 20 amps.
Question: Can this be used with gfci outlet
Answer: Look at your local code. We are not allowed to pull romex through any conduit in our county
Question: Does this come in black
Answer: 12 gauge is 20 amp cable. If you are desiring a 30 amp circuit you require 10 gauge as a minimum. There are a lot of great books for a low price on wiring available that cover these matters in detail for the average person with no electrical training. You might look around for the Black and Decker text used for cheap. Just remember that for a camper you will be looking at the rough weather and exterior methods and material as well.
Question: why can not use on horizontal plugs
Answer: Yes, it is possible to carry a 2000w 240V load on a 12/2 NM-B cable like this one. No, it will not pass an electrical inspection. The breaker must protect the wire, and if someone comes along and adds load to your heater circuit they could easily overheat the 12/2 and the 40A breaker would just let it fry as long as it never pulls 40 amps. Neither #12 nor #10 is good for 40 amps - both would overhead on a 35A load. You can drop down the breaker to a 240V 20A circuit breaker and both the cable and the load would be protected. It still would not pass inspection because of the improper color coding of this 12/2 cable. If the next owner of your home calls an electrician to rewire the house, he will think that your wall heater is 120V because standard household color coding is : black = +120 volts (Bus A) white = 0 volts (neutral wire) red =-120V bare = equipment ground (no current flow in during normal operation) That is why people are advising you to use 12/3 or 14/3 cable - 3-conductor Romex-type cables have a red jacketed wire in the bundle which is the proper color to use alongside the black cable for the two "hot" wires in a 240-volt circuit. This NM-B cable has an insulation rating of 600V, so it can tolerate 240V operation. I have used 12/2 to feed a 240V circuit - I fed the cable from a 240V 20A circuit breaker and used a red felt-tip permanent marker to color the white wire. This still would not pass an electrical inspection but it addresses the safety issues associated with serving your heater with 12/2 cable as long as the wire remains dry. I don't know the National Electrical Code well enough to say whether or not a black electrical tape on the white wire would pass an electrical inspection - that is also a obvious signal that the white wire is not a neutral wire. The calculations of 8.3 amperes drawn by your 2000-watt heater are correct. Using a 15A 240V breaker instead of 20A would introduce no further safety issues. Please do not use 12/2 to serve this load unless you mark the circuit as 240V in a can't-miss-it fashion, or the next person who tries to work on your wiring may assume that the white wire had 0 volts on it when it actually has 240 volts relative to the black wire - you may forget about it yourself and hurt yourself or your property sometime in the future. Misidentified wire is a cruel wiring mistake to leave behind. Happy wiring!

User questions & answers

Question: Do these have the plate under the side screws, or do they require wrapping the wire around the screw
Answer: THIS PLUG WILL WORK WITH A MAXIMUM OF 14 GAUGE WIRE -- THE CORD CLAMP & COVER WILL NOT CLOSE COMPLETELY WHEN USING ANYTHING LARGER THAN 14/3 SJT/SJO (14-gauge/3-conductor) CORDS/CABLES. The largest cord I could safely use with this Leviton Plug was a 14/3 SJTW cord & had to firmly close the cover with one hand while tightening the screw. If you need to replace the plug on a 12/3 12-gauge or 10/3 10-gauge electrical cord - I *highly recommend* using one of the larger, round Leviton plugs w/ the cord clamp that tightens independently from the plug housing. -- Those plugs will handle Cords up to 0.590" Diameter. -- Anything Larger than 0.590" Diameter, and you will be forced to use the Leviton Industrial "Black & White" Plugs, which feature an insert in the cord clamp/strain relief -- you can remove the insert to allow for use of larger cords up to 3/4" (0.750") in Diameter. Thank You All & Please Be Safe When Working With Electricity❗⚡🔌⚡
